All over the world, down through history, people have turned"bad weather into great sculpture. Snowmen are hip, they're trendy, you could even say they're cool." But snowmen are the least of whatyou can build, given snow, time, and a copy of this fantastic how-tobook! Build anything--or anyone--from Snowby Dick to PicasSnow to thesnow-free delicious Meringue Man; the winter world is youroyster. This delightful little book celebrates the joys of the whitestuff, and provides "recipes" for dozens of witty, beautiful, andimpressive polar creations. Emphasizing use of natural materials (pineneedles and cones, twigs, icicles, pebbles) and everyday householdobjects (toothpicks, wigs, pot lids, eggplants), the authors encouragesculptors to seek inspiration and have fun. Hard to imagine how anyonecould not have fun creating a real, candlelit arctic hearth. Oran adorable, albeit prickly, porcupine. Has that artistic temperamentturned sluggish due to cold and hunger? Try a couple of whitechocolate-coated marshmallow "snowmen" in a cup of hot cocoa. FrankieFrankeny's wonderfully helpful photos of all these marvelous creationsare interspersed with old black-and-white family shots of kids beingkids in the snow. Don't wait for the first blizzard to hit--startplanning a snow extravaganza now! (Ages 3 to 103) --EmilieCoulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Poor Binding
I loved the book and have tried many of the snowmen.Very fun ideas. The only problem was the spiral binding. For a book that has this many laminated pages the paper holding the spiral in isn't strong enough.

When the snow starts to fall, and the winter blues get you down...pick up this book and have some fun. This book provides inspiration as well as step-by-step instructions to create wonderful snow creations.Thephotographs are great, and the pages are plastic coated so you can take thebook outside in the snow.As the author of Aha! - 10 Ways To Free YourCreative Spirit and Find Your Great Ideas, I am always in search of funbooks to add to my "inspiration library"."Snowmen"has a place on my shelves... and with the kids in the yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Snowy Inspiration For Your Winter Window Heart View
Last year, I moved back "up north" with my son after nine years in sunny Florida.I had forgotten what a "warm" feeling you get while snuggled in a warm home basking in the beauty of the snow outside. We created funny little mounds of snow on fences and window sills whichdelighted up even more once back inside our toasty haven. We enjoyed thesnow silhouettes created by nature herself in the form of tree angels. This delightful book, of which I purchased three alone as gifts, hasinspired me to a new winter wonderway of welcoming the new millenium, creating snow art. There are such clever ideas for bringing snow joy intoour lives in this book.My twelve year old son was so enthralled by thebook that he said he would pay for half of it.Imagine that? With allthe books available for making indoor Christmas crafts, this book remindsus of the joy of working in and with nature, all the while reflecting onhow wonderful it will look and feel while snuggled back inside.Awonderfully creative and joyful book. With high regard,

1-0 out of 5 stars This book was a huge disappointment!
I purchased this book for our library and was really disappointed. The crafts and activities aren't very interesting and didn't inspire me to want to do a single project. For a better investment buy "Christmas Craftsand Entertaining",put out by Creative Publishing. Now that is agreat book with great ideas and great instructions. I've already made twotable runners. ... Read more

Product Description
This book celebrates one of the richest and most enduringthemes inAmerican architectureCalifornia's Arts and Crafts Movement. Echoing thewritings of Helen Hunt Jackson, Charles F. Lummis, and Charles Keeler, thismovement represented a retreat into a quieter place from the materialismofAmerican society. Anti-commercial, anti-modern, Arts and Craftspractitionersdrew on the decorative schemes of English Tudor, Swiss chalet, Japanesetemple, and Spanish mission, evoking an earlier time before modern industry andtechnology intruded. And if only one word is used to describe virtuallyeveryArts and Crafts house in California, that word is "woodsy": woodshinglesoutside, wood paneling inside, a wood fire burning in the homey, welcomingfireplace. Most chapters in this impressive and very readable book focus on onebuilding bya particular architect or designer and illustrate that person'sdevelopment andinfluences. Familiar architects such as Bernard Maybeck, Charles andHenryGreene, John Galen Howard, and Julia Morgan are here, but so too areless well- known names who were a vibrant part of the Arts and Crafts Movement. These lateRomantics designed houses to complement nature rather than contrast withit.Their eclecticism and historicism reflected a Romantic bent as well, nodoubtcultivated by their familiarity with the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where,in fact, Howard, Maybeck, and Morgan studied. The book's contributors also give attention to the builders, contractors, andcraftsmen whose skills contributed to the lasting impact of theCalifornia Artsand Crafts Movement. Superb illustrations provide examples ofelevations, composition details, interior fixtures, and gardens, all designed topromote the"simple living and high thinking" of the Craftsman style, an estheticthatcontinues to influence architecture today. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book covers early work by a large group of architects who could be classified as California Arts-and-Crafts designers. Some, like Bernard Maybeck, are well-known to most architects.Others are new to me.The projects selected by the editor are not at all familiar and some are quite lovely, such as the cover project, the Evans House by Louis Christian Mullgardt, built in 1907.My primary interest is in the last quarter of the book titled "The Second Generation."These are architects from the mid-20th century who worked in a contemporary version of the arts-and-crafts style, using a lot of wood and elegant detailing to create buildings with a warm appeal. However, each of these architects is illustrated with only two or three projects and the photographs, in keeping with the historic photos of the earlier work, are all small and printed in sepia tone only.Although it is nice to see these otherwise unfamiliar projects, the brevity of the text and the limited selection of projects was disappointing to me.In summary, this is a handsome book of fairly limited appeal that whets my appetite for a more complete and better-illustrated book on the so-called Second Generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful essays on the finest California architects
When I began studying architecture, many of my favorite architects were designers in the Arts & Crafts style. They were my favorites before I even heard of the Movement. This book is not only a must have for studentsof architecture and Arts & Crafts fans, but a valuable resource forhistory scholars in general who want to learn more about the people whoshaped the region and the way we live here. The book is nicelyphotographed, showing buildings in their early surroundings, as they existtoday, a variety of good close-up details, etc.All photos are black andwhite, some with an authentic sepia tone look. Some color photos wouldhave been nice.I wish that a book like this existed for the architects ofeach state. Each essay is well written by a variety of different authors, many of which are familiar names to Arts & Crafts enthusiasts.

Inspirational Home: simple ideas for uplifting decor and craft

I was so excited to receive this book and it is every bit as good as I had hoped it would be.There are so many lovely ideas and ways to incorporate hope and inspiration with a christian theme into your home.Any of the projects in the book would make a wonderful gift, and just looking thru the full page color photos left me feeling inspired to create some love for my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars gorgeous, modern and practical
this is a beautiful book.i wasn't sure what to expect, and i also trend towards a more "modern" style than a lot of the decor options you find in Lifeway/etc (not that it isn't great, it's just not my style so much).and i'm not super into handicrafts.but i took a leap and got this book.

it is visually beautiful, with gorgeous inspiring photos and "full color" throughout.there aren't a lot of "how-to" photos but there are detailed instructions (and personally i never seem to manage to follow how-to photos that effectively so i don't mind).the projects are things i could see actually keeping around my home for a while, and range from very simple (place card markers) to pretty sophisticated (a decorated chair or tea-tray).great examples of how to incorporate the Word in projects that aren't chintzy (or that you can personalize).

highly recommended.fun even just to read through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for home decoration.
When it comes to decorating my home, I like to get ideas and direction from those who are more talented.Jeanne Winters not only gives her readers easy to do decorating projects, but she also shows us how we can add God's Word to each project.Jeanne says, "The more visible God's word is, the more often it can comfort and strengthen."

This book is easy to follow along with vivid pictures. There are great ideas for possible gifts and definitely great ideas in decorating your own home.I am looking forward to trying out some of Jeanne Winters' projects. ... Read more
