Product Description
Film/Women's Studies

Legends and rising stars of feminist film and video tell their stories.

Alexandra Juhasz asked twenty-one women to tell their stories-women whose names make up a who's who (and who will be) of independent and experimental film and video. What emerged in the resulting conversations is a compelling (and previously underdocumented) history of feminism and feminist film and video, from its origins in the fifties and sixties to its apex in the seventies, to today.

Women of Vision is a companion piece to Juhasz's 1998 documentary of the same name. The book presents the complete interviews, allowing readers to hear directly the voices of these articulate, passionate women in an interactive remembering of feminist media history. Juhasz's introduction provides a historical, theoretical, and aesthetic context for the interviews.

These subjects have all shaped late twentieth-century film and video in fundamental ways, either as artists, producers, distributors, critics, or scholars, and they all believe that media are the most powerful tools for effecting change. Yet they are a very diverse group, with widely varying personal and professional backgrounds. By presenting their interviews together, Juhasz shows the differences among those involved in feminist media, but also the connections among them, and the way in which the field has been enriched by their sharing of knowledge and power. In the end, Juhasz not only records these women's careers, she broadens our understanding of feminism and shows how feminist history and documentary are made.

Interviewees: Pearl Bowser; Margaret Caples; Michelle Citron; Megan Cunningham; Cheryl Dunye; Vanalyne Green; Barbara Hammer; Kate Horsfield; Carol Leigh; Susan Mogul; Juanita Mohammed; Frances Negrón-Muntaner; Eve Oishi; Constance Penley; Wendy Quinn; Julia Reichert; Carolee Schneemann; Valerie Soe; Victoria Vesna; and Yvonne Welbon.

Alexandra Juhasz is associate professor of media studies at Pitzer College and an author and producer of independent film and video. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a fascinating biography of Eileen Power, a major British historian who once ranked in fame alongside Tawney, Trevelyan and Toynbee. Using letters, diaries and reminiscences, Maxine Berg recreates the life of this charismatic personality, describing, for the first time, Power's remarkable intellectual and scholarly achievements at a time when she was acting very much outside the female role. Power's ability, coupled with her vivid personality, made her history compelling reading and listening to a generation of students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great as textbook
I am lucky enough to be using this book as the main textbook for a Women's History class. It is a very informative book that is also very easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid rediting of first edition
This edition of the text is an improvement on the first edition in its movement away from the east-coast view of women's history and a move towards a more inclusive analysis. As to the lack of definition of such terms as "oppression", as alluded to in another critique of the text, one is tempted to answer "I know it when I see it...," postmodernism just being the latest form of academic "oppression."Clearly Sara Evans is an outstanding practioner of history and one whom understands the skill of an historian's work. How easy it is to criticize that which you know so very little about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful look at Women's History
I enjoyed reading Evans look a the history of Women in the U.S.From it's beginnings in the colonial times, through the suffrage movement up to the 80's.It's a wonderful look at part of our history that is ignored in most texts.Highly recommend for any student of women's history!

2-0 out of 5 stars PRESUMTIOUS PRECEPT
Its title claims a broad accomplishment, an "all your answers are here" assertion.Although it presentshundreds of historical figures, it is quickly evident that by "History of Women," the author means "The Plight ofWomen and What Their Heroes Have Done About It."The narrative embracesthe concept that from this county's origin to the present, women arevictims of misogyny, but that there are several heroes of the struggle. Despite the decline in feminist momentum, there nevertheless seems to be awealth of "historical" readings recently published by feminists.Acritique of feminism's tenants will not be attempted with this review, butit seems pressing to take issue with the didactic narratives of "historical" texts such as Born for Liberty.Exempt from theirpresentations is a clear discussion of three essential components:definitions of the terms "oppression" and "liberty," and the ideologiesthat steer their metanarratives in the name of "history."The exemption ofthese elements does not allow for rhetorical inquiry, which is vital forthe veracity of the texts' contents. Feminist history, arguably a genreof its own, credulously seeks to convert its readers on the pretense thatthere is a universal understanding of what it means to be oppressed andliberated.Once readers naively embrace this pretense, they are prone toalso believing the tenants of feminism.Perhaps, then, the narrative ofBorn for Liberty will successfully promote the feminist agenda, but itsconverts will have naively succumbed to the same tactics of hierarchicalpropaganda that it claims to abhor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough and informative history of women in the U.S.
Evans' "Born for Liberty" is an excellent history of women in the U.S. The women's rights movements are often times portrayed as struggles of white middle-class women for white middle-class women. Evansincludes the struggles and contributions of working-class women, blackwomen, and immigrant women to the women's rights movements. I definitelyrecommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the strugglefor equality and the role of women in shaping this country's history. ... Read more

Product Description
The history of India's struggle for independence has often focused on nationalist leaders such as Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah. Women have appeared merely as wives, sisters or daughters. Yet women were present at all levels of the struggle: as followers of Gandhi's great campaigns of civil Disobedience in the 1920s and 1930s; and as vigorous and outspoken campaigners for self-rule. Rozina Visram looks at the role of women in the struggle for independence from the British, as well as in their fight for equal rights and the vote. Largely through the eyes of Indian women, she examines their traditional role; their social and political awakening; and their active part in the political life of India and Pakistan before and since 1947. A chapter on rebel women also uncovers the terrorist activities of the determinated minority of women advocating revolution. ... Read more

Product Description
Drawing on three decades of feminist scholarship bent on rediscovering lost and abandoned women writers, Susan Staves provides a comprehensive history of women's writing in Britain from the Restoration to the French Revolution. This major work of criticism also offers fresh insights about women's writing in all literary forms, not only fiction, but also poetry, drama, memoir, autobiography, biography, history, essay, translation and the familiar letter. Authors celebrated in their own time and who have been neglected, and those who have been revalued and studied, are given equal attention. The book's organisation by chronology and its attention to history challenge the way we periodise literary history. Each chapter includes a list of key works written in the period covered, as well as a narrative and critical assessment of the works. This magisterial work includes a comprehensive bibliography and list of prevalent editions of the authors discussed. ... Read more

Product Description

Gillian G. Gaar’s critically acclaimed, breakthrough book, the first full history of women in rock and pop ever written, became an instant classic upon its publication in 1992. Arranged chronologically and told with impassioned detail, She’s A Rebel charts a half century of women performers from the early R and B singers of the 1950s, to the girl groups, Motown acts, folksingers, and rock chicks of the 1960s, to the punk rebels and pop divas of the 1970s, to the brash all-girl bands, rappers, and riot grrls of the 1980s and 1990s. This expanded ten-year anniversary edition features over 75 photos and includes three all-new chapters on all the major artists of the last decade as well as an insider’s look at the music industry and the emerging power of women rock stars. With new preface by Yoko Ono and dozens of new profiles and interviews with performers—such as Courtney Love, L7, Bikini Kill, the Breeders, Sarah McLachlan, Ani di Franco, Sheryl Crow, Sleater Kinney, Alanis Morrisette, Lucinda Williams, Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill, Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado, Bjork, and many others— this book captures the amazing explosion of women’s voices and talent in the music world. “[She’s A Rebel] is as thoroughly entertaining as it is researched ... It’s exhaustive and exhilarating.”—Billboard

An encyclopedic narrative of the role of women in rock and popover the last four decades, from Big Mama Thornton, who topped theR&B charts with "Hound Dog" three years before Elvis, tothe female musical powerhouses of the '90s. Compulsively readable and thoroughlyentertaining, this is a spirited and much-needed retelling of rockhistory which has tended to treat women peripherally at best. 4-0 out of 5 stars very informative book
the most informative book about women in rock. it made me buy manygreat cds and that`s what is all about: to seek new music and to find new favorites.

4-0 out of 5 stars A long overdue story
This book is chock full of information about women's entire history in music. It doesn't just focus on rock music, but also includes pop, r&b, and hip hop. I bought this book mainly for the 'Enjoy Being A Grrrl' chapter, which features information about the Riot Grrrl movement which really interests me. It also focuses on modern sexism in the music industry. Some are blindingly obvious like Eminem and Woodstock '99 (which ended in numerous sexual assaults) and some of them are less unknown like Blink 182 asking female fans in the audience to 'Show us your t*ts!' on the Warped Tour. It also mention groupies and how they may feel they are "rebelling against the plastic uptightness of straight American society but their rebellion only reaffirs a social system in which women are defined by the man they are aligned with." I couldn't agree more.

Something I noticed is that there were some major artists overlooked, Stevie Nicks for example (like someone else before mentioned). I also noticed a tiny mistake where the author said that 'Sugar Baby Doll' wrote the songs 'Quiet Room' and 'Best Sunday Dress' when in reality it was actually the 'Pagan Babies' (another band that Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland had) who wrote and performed the songs. Not that this really matters, maybe I'm just being picky. My only major compliant about the book is that the author had to put in the Spice Girls and Britney Spears, which I think is a little uncalled for.

Other than that, the book is great and I especially enjoyed reading about different bands like Bratmobile and Sleater-Kinney. It makes me want to go out and buy their albums! Interesting facts like how Big Mama Thornton originally sang 'Hound Dog' before Elvis proves that women have always been overlooked in music, and this book tries to change that.

4-0 out of 5 stars The basic text on rockin' women!
I agree with a previous critic who complained about some of the omissions in this book. Not only are the women from Fleetwooc Mac missing but so is Chaka Khan, the most influential female R&B singer since Aretha Franklin! But except for those omissions - and the author's apparent bias in favor of those women who let her interview them - "She's a Rebel" is the basic and essential text on women in rock.At a time when the rock establishment continues to ignore women - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has not inducted a single woman in several years - we need an author like Gaar to remind us of the contributions that women made and continue to make to our pop music.A special salute to Gaar for including in her book the often-ignored, and mostly-unknown, "womyn's music".

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let lack of Nicks nix this book
While I love Stevie Nicks as much as the next person, this book is very important - even without space devoted to her.Sure she is an important figure in rock & roll, but "She's a Rebel" shines valuable light on some of the less-well-known figures in the history of rock.Don't discount a book that should be essential reading to every fan of rock music just because of an omission.

3-0 out of 5 stars basically a fine overview of women in rock...
Includes many of today's rock divas as well in this edition. But how can anyone write a book of women's contributions to rock and roll and ignore Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac?They were not strictly ornaments, they wrote most of the Mac's hit songs and were fine musicians in their own right.I just find that hard to accept, as will many others.... Women like Sheryl Crow, Courtney Love and Sarah McLachlan have acknowledged their debt to them. Not to mention Stevie's triumphant return in 2001..
The rest of the book is fine, it covers well known and not so well known women in rock, mainstream and non-mainstream. ... Read more

Product Description
Enriched by the wealth of new research into women's history, No Small Courage offers a lively chronicle of American experience, charting women's lives and experiences with fascinating immediacy from the precolonial era to the present. Individual stories and primary sources-including letters, diaries, and news reports-animate this history of the domestic, professional, and political efforts of American women. John Demos begins the book with a discussion of Native American women confronting colonization. Leading historians illuminate subsequent eras of social and political change-including Jane Kamensky on women's lives in the colonial period, Karen Manners Smith on the rising tide of political activity by women in the Progressive Era, Sarah Jane Deutsch on the transition of 1920s optimism to the harsh realities of the Great Depression, Elaine Tyler May on the challenges to a gender-defined social order encouraged by World War II, and William H. Chafe on the women's movement and the struggle for political equality since the 1960s. The authors vividly relate such events as Anne Hutchinson's struggle for religious expression in Puritan Massachusetts, former slave Harriet Tubman's perilous efforts to free others in captivity, Rosa Parks's resistance to segregation in the South, and newfound opportunities for professional and personal self-determination available as a result of decades of protest. Dozens of archival illustrations add to the human dimensions of the authoritative text. No Small Courage dynamically captures the variety and significance of American women's experience, demonstrating that the history of our nation cannot be fully understood without focusing on changes in women's lives. ... Foreword by Gordon R. Sullivan, General, U.S. Army (Ret); President, Association of the United States Army. Introduction by Wilma L. Vaught, Brigadier General, U.S. Air Force (Ret) President, Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation

From the legendary Molly Pitcher, who loaded cannons during the American Revolution, to Rhonda Cornum, an army doctor held prisoner of war during Operation Desert Storm, millions of American women have served beside men on the world's battlefields. Women have fired muskets and Scud missiles, and they've performed countless vital tasks in all branches of the armed forces. There are some 1.5 million women veterans alive today, and 333,000 women currently serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

A powerful collection of poignant, rarely seen photographs and personal narratives, Side-By-Side pays long-awaited tribute to the strength and courage of women in military service-and, in doing so, offers a fresh perspective on American history. Thanks to the author, readers gain unprecedented access to the archives of The Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, along with numerous public and private repositories. Women in European History illustrates the social, cultural, legal and, political conditions that European women have faced from the Middle Ages to the present day. It also explores women's ideas and ideals, their perceptions of the relations between the sexes and their struggle for civil, political, and social rights.

The book covers the long-standing European debate on gender relations and the roles of the sexes in society, which ultimately also posed the question of what is humanity. The study spans, among other topics, changes in marriage over centuries, women's role in the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, gender relations in the European welfare states, the European dictatorships and Nazi racism and the women's movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book concludes with an account of the emergence of historiography on women over the past two centuries. ... Read more

Product Description
In this new edition of the classic text in the field, Christine Ammer surveys a full 200 years of women active in American music. From the earliest organists to contemporary innovators in jazz, succinct biographical sketches show the influences of and influences on hundreds of musicians. Adding significantly to the list, Ammer now chronicles important strides women musicians have made in the last 20 years.Amazon.com Review
Discrimination against women in music goes back centuries to the all-malechapel choir with its ecclesiastical injunction: "Women must be silent inchurch." Unsung: A History of Women in American Music discusses theplace of women in every musical field, their successes and failures, and most especially the obstacles they have always faced--and still face--in gaining artistic recognition and professional acceptance, and what they have done to overcome and circumvent them. First published in 1980, now revised and expanded, this is an excellent, comprehensive survey of an all-too-little-known aspect of American music from the times of the Puritans to the present.

Ammer writes in a clear, lively, often ironically humorous, and very readable style, displaying impressive knowledge of a great variety of techniques and instruments, including electronics and beyond. Thoroughly researched, scholarly but never dry, the book is admirably inclusive, but it almost overwhelms the reader with names, facts, and figures. We do not really have to know the date, place, program, and reception of every concert and premiere performance. There are also too many "firsts" gained by women: appearances, awards, prizes, etc. However, Ammer makes her subjects' stories moving and absorbing. Her account of the composers of the New England school reveals that, sadly, most of the women, though quite successful during their lifetimes, have been totally forgotten.

Ammer sometimes takes feminism too far: surely, it cannot be denied that the greatest composers have been men, even if only for reasons of social convention. She quotes composer Libby Larsen's complaint that "kids in school are still taught that Beethoven is the greatest composer" and that "the compositional canon" in the school orchestras "is overwhelmingly male." But she also quotes conductor Margaret Hillis: "There is only one woman I know who could never be a symphony conductor, and that's the Venus de Milo." She proves that the best, most prestigious orchestras still hire the fewest women, and that far fewer women than men receive foundation support. In conclusion, Ammer acknowledges a slow but significant improvement in the status of women musicians, crediting both changing social conditions and their own determined, vigorous activism. --Edith Eisler ... Product Description

This is a study of Chinese Hui Muslim women's historic and unrelenting spiritual, educational, political and gendered drive for an institutional presence in Islamic worship and leadership: 'a mosque of one's own' as a unique feature of Chinese Muslim culture. The authors place the historical origin of women's segregated religious institutions in the Chinese Islamic diaspora's fight for survival, and in their crucial contribution to the cause of ethnic/religious minority identity and solidarity. Against the presentation of complex historical developments of women's own site of worship and learning, the authors open out to contemporary problems of sexual politics within the wider society of socialist China and beyond to the history of Islam in all its cultural diversity.

Product Description
Rosemary Cullen Owens stresses at all times the importance of class and land ownership as key determinants for women's lives. A decrease in home industries allied to increasing mechanisation on the farm, resulted in a contraction of labour opportunities for rural women. With the establishment of an independent farming class, the distinguishing criteria for status in rural Ireland became ownership of land, in which single-minded patriarchal figures dominated. In this context, the position of women declined, and a society evolved with a high pattern of late-age marriages, large numbers of unwed sons and daughters, and an accepted pattern of emigration. In the cities and towns, the condition of lower-working-class women was particularly distressing for most of the period, with particular problems regarding housing, health and sanitation. Through the working of campaigning activists, equal educational and political rights were eventually attained. From the early 1900s there was some expansion in female employment in shops, offices and industry, but domestic service remained a high source of employment. For middle-class women, employment opportunities were limited and usually disappeared on marriage. The civil service, a major employer in an economy that was generally un-dynamic and stagnant, operated a bar on married women for much of the period. Rosemary Cullen Owens not merely traces these injustices but also the campaigns fought to right them. She locates these struggles in the wider social context in which they took place. This important and overdue book provides an important missing piece in the jigsaw of modern Irish history. ... Read more
