Product Description

Still Counting explains why scholars and activists continue to count the number of women elected to Canada's legislatures, and demonstrates that, by any measure, women are only halfway to equal. The authors assert that an "electoral glass ceiling" is keeping women at or below the 25 per cent mark, restricting women to less than half of the seats that would be theirs in a democracy committed to balanced, equitable, and fair representation. Moreover, little is being done to address this democratic deficit. Despite drawbacks, such as the "revolving door" for female party leaders and continued sexism in legislatures, the authors also show how women can, and do, make a difference in politics.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read
"Dancing Backwards", cowritten by Sharon Carstairs and Tim Higgins, both
of Winnipeg, is an excellent book covering a very interesting and
important period of change in Canadian politics, a period that is still
evolving and becoming even more important as time goes on, and more
women become active in the governing of our country, (as they should be, I
suggest).It deserves wide attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Book of the Month
This is the story of the determined and difficult assault by women on the male-dominated citadel of Canadian politics.  Combining profiles of twenty-eight remarkable women who have achieved political firsts with a richly detailed, immensely readable history of Canadian life over the last century, Dancing Backwards, will change the way you look at Canadian history. ... Excerpt: Vesselina Kasarova (born 18 July 1965) is a Bulgarian mezzo-soprano opera singer. Vesselina Kasarova was born in the central Bulgarian town of Stara Zagora. Under the communist regime she studied Russian as a second language and began her music education in early childhood, taking her first piano lesson when she was only 4 years old. She gave her first stage performance as a 16-year-old pianist performing Mozart sonatas in 1981 in her hometown. As she studied piano and worked as accompanist at recitals, Kasarova became drawn to the voice as a musical instrument. Product Description
It is almost 100 years since women were given the right to vote in New Zealand and, unintentionally, the right to sit in parliament in South Australia. This book covers all this period to the present. It highlights the accounts of women - some well-known but many unknown - without whose bravery, determination and belief in the rights of women, it would still not be possible for women to own property, have custody of their children, be paid the same as men for doing the same work, be allowed to stay in the work-force after marriage, or be entitled to say "no" to sex once married. This book aims to show how recent the struggle for women's rights has been, how hard it was to achieve even small gains - like the right to vote, make a will or get a divorce - and to remind readers that, with only 7% of MPs in English-speaking parliaments being women, there is still a lot more to achieve. ... Product Description
"A pathbreaking study that analyzes the inter-relationships between national and local politics and the women's movement in an African setting."-Margaret Snyder, UNIFEM

Uganda has attracted much attention and political visibility for its significant economic recovery after a catastrophic decline. In her groundbreaking book, Aili Mari Tripp provides extensive data and analysis of patterns of political behavior and institutions by focusing on the unique success of indigenous women's organizations.

Tripp explores why the women's movement grew so dramatically in such a short time after the National Resistant Movement took over in 1986. Unlike many African countries where organizations and institutions are controlled by a ruling party or regime, the Ugandan women's movement gained its momentum by remaining autonomous.

Uganda is an African country that has attracted great interest and political visibility (witness President Clinton's 1998 visit there on his African visit), having gone through a significant economic recovery after a catastropic decline.Extensive data on the success and patterns of political behavior and institutions is of great interest, and this includes some of their uniquely successful indigenous women's organizations.Tripp examines two urban and two rural case studies, evaluating both Uganda's leadership in promoting women's political participation, and the broader patterns of women's political behavior. Her work should have strong readerships in African politics and history, women's studies, anthropology, comparative politics, and international development studies. ... Product Description
This book traces the history of women’s political involvement in Southern Africa, in anti-colonial struggles and against apartheid, analyzes the post-colonial outcomes and examines the strategies that have been employed by women’s movements to gain a foothold in politics.

It looks in detail at the experiences of women both in and with the women’s wings of political parties through the early years of independence up to today, discusses the successes and failures of national machinery for the advancement of women and analyses the activities of women’s movements over time. Extensive material from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa is compared and juxtaposed, as women politicians and women’s movements learned from each others’ experiences over time.

The study also critically addresses the uneasy relationship between the women’s movements and the state, and between women activists and women politicians as they have negotiated cooptation, integration and exclusion. Based on an extensive literature review and innumerable interviews with women politicians and activists as well as fieldwork, and spanning half a century and half a continent, the historical depth and geographical spread of the study put it in a class of its own. ... Product Description
This engaging collection of essays attempts to do justice to the complexity of contemporary families and to situate them in their economic, political, and cultural contexts. The editors introduce this wide-ranging collection with a provocative analytical introduction, setting the stage with a recognition that families may look very different even to those inside the same family. These cutting-edge scholars explore the ways in which family life is gendered and reflect on the work of maintaining family and kin relationships, especially as social and family power structures change over time. The book includes a guide to topics (from Adoption and African-American Families to Work-Family Tensions and Working-Class Families) that should prove useful to teachers, students, and researchers. Author note: Karen V Hansen, Associate Professor of Sociology at Brandeis University, is the author of "A Very Social Time: Crafting Community in Antebellum New England", and the co-editor (with Ilene J Philipson) of "Women, Class, and the Feminist Imagination: A Socialist-Feminist Reader" (Temple, 1990).Anita Ilta Garey, Assistant Professor of Family Studies at the University of Connecticut, is the author of "Weaving Work and Family: Working Mothers and the Construction of Meaning" (Temple). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars From family composition to social policy.
This is an extraordinarily abundant anthology of resources on a topic asbroad as any that could be tackled. Given the wide variety of topics andapproaches by the 56 writers, the reviewer especially appreciated theorganization of chapters. The non-traditional construction, perhaps women'sway of ordering ideas, offered a provocative exploration and encouraged newconnections for the reader.

Additionally, the editors provide aseven-page guide to 45 topics, alphabetically arranged, from adoption toworking-class families. Product Description

How is feminism changing the way women and men think, feel, and act? Virginia Held explores how feminist theory is changing contemporary views of moral choice. She proposes a comprehensive philosophy of feminist ethics, arguing persuasively for reconceptualizations of the self; of relations between the self and others; and of images of birth and death, nurturing and violence. Held shows how social, political, and cultural institutions have traditionally been founded upon masculine ideals of morality. She then identifies a distinct feminist morality that moves beyond culturally embedded notions about motherhood and female emotionality. Examining the effects of this alternative moral and ethical system on changing social values, Held discusses its far-reaching implications for altering standards of freedom, democracy, equality, and personal development. Ultimately, she concludes, the culture of feminism could provide a fresh perspective on—even solutions to—contemporary social problems.

Feminist Morality makes a vital contribution to the ongoing debate in feminist theory on the importance of motherhood. For philosophers and other readers outside feminist theory, it offers a feminist moral and social critique in clear and accessible terms.
