Gleaning from a Bountiful Harvest


GLEANING FROM A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST

Would that I had the breadth and depth of knowledge that these authors have. I'm glad I don't have to take a test on what I've read, but oh what I've gleaned from the bits and pieces I've picked up.Starting with an interest in the psychology (and therefore history) of women, and a long-standing sharing with a small study group at church, focusing on women in the Bible, I thought I had a pretty good understanding. But this feast humbles even as it delights.

What especially added to my feast? - the issue of slavery, the apparent rambunctious-ness of the house churches, the commemorative use of wine, even the funeral dinner - how contemporary that seemed. It wasn't news that women's earnings were important, but our group hadn't really examined the effect of class.

This is by no means a complete menu. For example, I made note of the observation that the death of young children evoked terrible grief, in spite of its being so common.

I confess, I did head to the summaries at the end of the chapters. I'm an academic, but it was still a hard go for me. The ranking of five reflects all the positives I've expressed here, but if someone is thinking of reading it, be prepared to dig into detailed substantiation.

An important read!
The Bible gives little mention to the women of the early Christian church, though surely they were around. What was their role in the church and how was the church integrated into their daily lives?

Until now, these questions were largely unanswered or answered, at best with conjecture. The three authors use a variety of evidence, both religious and secular, to construct a vivid description of the lives of these women, providing the reader with a fuller picture of the first few centuries of the Christian church. The authors weave together the evidence with insight and precision, giving a clear picture of the times.

A Woman's Place provides an overwhelming sense of community that women of the early church shared. During the first several centuries of Christianity, the church was centered on the home. This was the gathering place for worship.

As the home was the domain of women, women took a leading role in many aspects of the early church. Women were leaders, teachers and supporters of one another. They provided enormous amounts of nurturing and hospitality to one another.

Particularly fascinating are the descriptions of birthing and dining rituals. Early Christian women were segregated from the men, yet formed a strong community among themselves with their own ways of celebrating and worshipping.

Until now, the stories of early Christianity have been focused on the men of the church, primarily the apostles going out into the world to spread the good news. A Woman's Place honors the women of the early church, revealing their important role in providing the home environment where the good news could grow.

Highly recommended!
In this fascinating book, Dr. C.S. Cowles of Point Loma Nazarene University, having become ashamed of his denomination's overweening male chauvinism, examines the role of women in the church service from both a historic and scriptural basis. His conclusion is that there is no reasonable basis for excluding women from any Christian service, including church leadership. Higly recommended!

The worst unreadable tripe
This is a terrible book that could had potential.Arguably women in antarctica have as much interest and stories to share as men.Unfortunatly this author, an unabashed feminist, just lists lots of boring facts and petty acheivements of women. Do we really care who the first women who swore at the south pole was?Or the first women to smoke a cigarrette at the pole?No.A terrible book, useless tripe, hateful.

Lieutenant Mack Settles and Lieutenant George Lincoln, are two subordinates whose roles help make for interesting contrast. Officer James Patton, the other Black assigned to the security section permanently, becomes involved with Alberta's plight out of racial pride and a need to identify that pride with being a Black man.

Division Chief Dale Warren is sociopathic, domineering and upper management's overseer of the multi-million dollar security operation. Laura James, the security unit clerk, manipulates Chief Klein consistently in order to control him for her own selfish endeavors. The tailored character of Jeremy Chambers, the love interest of Alberta, impacts and shatters the ideology of love and lifetime partnership. Other characters invade an enhance the story as it unveils the drama, laughter, and pain of survival.

Unbelievable!
While attending a book club meeting, I was fortunate enough to meet Patricia Pope, author of "Colored Waiting Room." Colored Waiting Room is a compelling drama that describes the struggles of a black woman locked in the grips of the "good ole boy" network. The character, Alberta Graham, examines the past eight years of her life as she waits for the hours to pass in a long forgotten room at Cherokee Nuclear Plant in rural east Tennessee. Colored Waiting Room took me on an emotional journey and didn't want to let me go. The racisim and blatant disrespect Alberta suffered was enough to make anyone upset. I believe the Colored Waiting Room was a story that needed to be told so that we can wake up and see that although things have gotten better, we still have a long way to go. I gave Colored Waiting Room five stars because of the boldness and complexity of the story. I recommend this novel because it deals with real life issues, and not everything is wrapped up in a nice pretty bow at the end.

This book reads like a non fiction account of life in rural Tennessee, in the life of a black female officer. It tells the story of Alberta, who dares to wear braids in uniform and stands up to the other officers to don't want a woman especially a black woman with her position there. Alberta endures bigotry,fear, disrespect and fights back respectively, but the waiting game continues. I say it reads like non fiction because a some point this has happened to some black female officer somewhere. The book was well written and a good read. I give the book *** 3 stars.

This Book was absolutely great. It was well written, and loaded with information. The descriptions of the places made the reader think they were actually there, and the details of each character made the reader know them individually. Alberta Graham is a wonderful character, who represents so may people who had to endure racism. Colored Waiting Room was captivating, explosive, enchanting, fascinating,and courageous.

I love this book.The author has a great ability to make you feel like you know the main characters...as if you grew up with them from childhood.Her ability to make the characters vivid and relatable is uncanny.At the end, the author addresses an issue that most Black people must face at some point in their lives.I wish she had delved into that more...maybe an additional chapter or two.I'm very interested in how she would have concluded that issue.

This was a good effort for her first book.I'm sure her next book will have tighter...more cohesive chapters...and address fewer concepts or situations so that the reader can stay focused on a few situations with each character.But overall, this book was pretty good.I love it.It's a nice easy read.

Sometimes a story comes along that grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go until it has taken you on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Excellent, important documentary - but FREE from American Radio Works
The audio documentary presents an important and realistic look into what conditions were like for women who worked in male-dominated fields in the 70's.

Not a miner, I worked as a surveyor and construction inspector in the same time period and my experiences were much like the women of the iron range.Young men and women should listen to the audio documentary to appreciate how far we've come in 30 years.
