3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Kindle
Some books are just not well-suited for Kindle and this is one.The plus is, I get to evaluate whether I want to make the investment in a hard copy. That is an ongoing process. My answer at this time is -- "not yet".

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical prospective on Wood Carving
As a beginning wood carver I was looking for books to help me get started. There are lots of picture books that are a great help. This one takes a very different approach. There are suggestions for the tools to buy to get started. All 24 of them. There is information on sharpening the tools etc. However this book is written for the apprentice wood carver preparing to make a living carving decorative work for furniture, buildings and so on. You see this book was written one hundred years ago.It is a wonderful book to get started working with wood carving, but also to understand some of the history.Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Art, indeed!
This book is the best, most comprehensive, and beautiful book on the lovespoon that I have found. It has everything a beginner carver would need to know, and addresses everything I ever wondered regarding the lovespoon tradition. It expands on the tradition across several cultures. It has a beautiful gallery of many of the world's very best lovespoon carvers' work, allowing one to get an idea of how much variation there is, and what a truly fine art David and the rest of these great carvers have made it. It meets the needs of carvers, going through everything from sharpening tools, to designing your own patterns, and even includes several of David's beautiful patterns. It includes beautiful and clear, helpful pictures throughout. I haven't seen another book that does such a great job of answering every question one would have throughout the whole process of making a lovespoon. This book does a great service to this lovely tradition and art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs, fun to read, easy directions
I also found out about David Western from his blog and was totally blown away by how beautiful his work was. I always wanted to learn to carve but was intimidated by it, had the idea it was only for men but when I got this book it made me really want to give it a try.It was very good for me as a beginner, explains everything so that you can really understand it and I felt like it gave me what I needed to be able to get started with confidence and know what tools I needed, how to take care of them and how to use them.I like his designs very much, he's definitely an artist, and I find them very inspiring. If your idea of art is to "carve" bears on toilets from a whole tree with a chainsaw, this isn't for you, but if you love the beauty of wood and want to try your hand at making something really lovely yourself, this is a great book.I also had never heard of lovespoons before I saw this and what a great tradition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for the scroll sawer!
I was looking for a book with durable product designs. This book was just not for "me". It is a good source book, but I have knowledge in the areas discussed(sharpening, tools etc.). The beginner and intermediate patterns were more of the designs I like. The other 16 patterns were thin and utilized more scroll saw skills than carving. One honestly looks like a block of wood. Patterns are artsy and too delicate.I returned this product and ordered the other two lovespoon books(I think they are better!)

5-0 out of 5 stars love spoons
Both books were very, very good.Plenty of pictures and loads of very useful imformation. This was just what I needed to get started with this craft.Imformation was easy to understand.I would recomend this book to anyone interested in wood carving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Art
I first ran across David Western in the pages of Woodcarving Illustrated (WCI). I liked his enthusiasm, and checked out his website. I was floored by the intricacy and delicacy of his art. I wanted to do that, so I copied the pattern in WCI, bought a couple of 1 x 3 x 12 poplar boards, ordered his book, Fine Art of Carving Lovespoons, and got started.

I received the book when I was about halfway through carving my first spoon. It was like getting an early Christmas present! The book is laid out in a supremely logical manner. Without asking about this, I can be pretty sure that this book wasn't intended to be just about how to carve a lovespoon (though that information is there, in great detail). David apparently wanted a book that would introduce new people to the art and romance of lovespoon carving. In this he succeeded. Beginning with the history and lore illustrated by examples of lovespoons done by him and several other artists, the book also covers the materials and tools, step-by-step instructions for three patterns, then finally patterns and something that is sorely needed in all carving books but seldom included: a chapter on doing your own designs. This, in my view, elevates Fine Art of Carving Lovespoons above 99% of the carving books on the market. And I have to say that the photography is outstanding. ... Read more

Product Description
Woodcarving is a beginner's handbook for carving letters, basic decorative figures and signs.Carver David Hassell has made his living for years creating elegant carved wood signs and decorative carvings for boats and businesses. In this book, he gives the beginning carver the basics of getting started and teaches you the essential steps of carving letters and simple, elegant designs. He takes you step-by-easy-step through carving simple exercises to eight different nameboard designs, through carving letters both large and small, to three more complex eagles and on through finishing and gold leafing techniques.Large-sized patterns for each project are provided, as well as complete tool and equipment lists.

From the Author's Introduction:

I love to carve wood.If you've picked up this book, that probably means you feel the same way.If you see a fine piece of wood and even think about carving something into it, that means there's a woodcarver lurking within.Maybe you haven't taken the time to learn how to carve because you think you don't have the knowledge or experience to do it.Maybe you think the tools are too expensive, a workshop is too hard to create, and you can't afford to take so much time for yourself.I am going to change your thinking with this book.If you sincerely want to carve, you can.I've written this book with the untrained woodcarver in mind, but I've also included some more complicated projects for advanced carvers - which is what I want to help you become.

My own life experience should encourage you because I am not a formally trained woodcarver, yet I've managed to support my family with this craft for more than a quarter of a century. . . . This book, though, isn't about how you can make a living as a woodcarver.I am just sharing some of the techniques I've developed as a professional in the hope that you will use them to learn a satisfying hobby.

Old-school marine woodcarvers may initially resist some of the techniques I've developed, such as the use of power tools along with hand tools. I will also make recommendations for modern finishing systems that have proven their superiority to previous methods. All of these adaptations do nothing to dilute the integrity of the end product, they save time and frustration, and their use can actually make a more beautiful and durable project.I hope you'll find this book useful and fun.And I hope you'll discover the special pleasure in marine woodcarving that I've enjoyed for such a long time. ...
