4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book is an encyclopedia. I just wanted to know what to buy as a first tool and find out what kind of wood to start with. Wow! There is a lot more to whittlin' than I expected. I need a basic primer for now. I will keep this book as a master reference for the future. The sizing chart is way cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woodcarving Tools, Materials & Equipment is Outstanding!
Chris is an English carver with a vast knowledge of tools and carvinghistory. This not your typical wood carving book with remedial carvinginstructions and patterns for spirits and gnomes. In fact there are"no" patterns in this book.

The book has a very thoroughdescription of every carving tool imaginable and a discussion of how manyof them are made commercially and explains how others can be made at home.He also tells you how to modify existing tools--reshaping, grinding, andbending. He included a very good explanation on how to anneal, harden, andtemper your own carving tools.

I first opened this book, early oneevening, intending to read for an hour or so; I finally set it down at2:00am.In one session, I learned more than enough to justify the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, excellent book on carving tools!
This is not a book on carving, it is a book about the tools and etc. The sections on selecting and sharpening tools are spot on. Mr. Pye writes very well; this is a good read.

Highly recommended ... Read more

This is a short overview of 20th century Lithuanian wood carvings. The color photo reproduction is excellent. The text is brief, but describes the multiple meanings of several pieces very well. This is not a book for those interested in traditional carvings. It does describe a living tradition of folk carvings, as interpreted by recent artists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book
the book I ordered is most informative about wood carving with power tools. It's just what I needed. The author has done an excellent job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good guide
I checked this out from the library, but intend to purchase the book to keep. There are specific projects in here that are pretty well explained and fairly diverse.I used the Icelandic design to make myself a lazy kate (a device to use while plying spun wool) and it really came out well, despite my differing from intent and finishing from the book's suggestions.

There are several other things in this book that would make it an excellent thing to have on the shelf if you are interested in power tool carving (dremel and the like). The wide range of techniques and projects, the specific suggestions about not only what tools to use when but also for what purpose, the color pictures in the center which really bring the projects to life, and the basics in wood carving that you will learn if you undertake a project.I have a million ideas and hope to purchase a more substantial dremel to use in my woodcarving pursuits. This book really helped me through the beginner stages of a new hobby, I highly recommend. ...
