Editorial Review

Product Description
This catalogue of musical instruments made by 120-odd makers of the 16th through the 19th centuries contains information on many heretofore unknown or unreported examples.Phillip T. Young, member of the Board of Governors of the American Musical Instrument Society and editor of The Look of Music, the Vancouver Centennial Musical Instrument Collection Catalogue, has personally inspected more than three-quarters of these instruments in major museums as well as in private collections so s mall that they do not appear in even the most recent directories. The combination of his two short inventories (The Galpin Society Journal, 1967, 1978), intensified research, reader contributions, and the incorporation of other less-complete listings has enabled Prof. Young to compile a research tool that is unequaled in thoroughness and the majority of which has not been previously available. Also included are a number of photographs of instruments of special interest, making this a beautiful as well as valuable volume. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Scholarly History of the Flute
This is strictly a scholarly history of the flute and only that, and an excellent one at that.
John

4-0 out of 5 stars Well researched and presented but lacking certain topics.
A thoughtful, thorough history of the flute.Perhaps a little too narrowly focussed, as the flute's history included relevant interactions with other woodwinds, none of which are mentioned.Does not say enough about the flute after 1960, and could use an expansion of the material on such topics as the pccolo, alto and bass flutes--this is a serious deficiency. Not quite as thoroughly referenced as other volumes in this series, but generally this meets an adequate scholarly standard. There are some formal idiosyncracies which the author accepts.Despite its weaknesses, this is the current "definitive" history of the flute.Well recommended, and not too costly! ... Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for accordions, bagpipes, harmonicas, and other non-electronic musical instruments excluding percussion, string and fretted, brass wind, and woodwind musical instruments across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for accordions, bagpipes, harmonicas, and other non-electronic musical instruments excluding percussion, string and fretted, brass wind, and woodwind musical instruments. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great for research, I have used it in several of my papers. Originally published in 1939, it has several instruments that have fallen out of use. It starts with some of the science behind how the instruments work and their mechanics. Then he divides the instruments into woodwind and brass. He goes through each major instruments, their relatives, the details, and the history of each. For anyone curious about their instrument's history or any music historian, I'd recommended having this book in the collection. ... Product Description
The Montagu Collection, of worldwide coverage and all types of instruments, began to take shape in the early 1960's when what had been a small and very random collection was then rapidly expanded to illustrate lectures, and to provide material for research, on all aspects of organology. By 1967, when Jeremy Montagu mounted an exhibition in Sheffield and for that reason started his ledger catalogue, the number of instruments had reached about 450. It has now, thirty years later, reached nearly 2,500. The Collection is always accessible to interested persons. ... Read more
