4-0 out of 5 stars Learn how to be a "word builder" with this very engaging, unique book!
The tractor is coming into a building with a heavy load of twenty-six letters and a boy is already working hard withpneumatic nail gun hammering "a through z into words."Naturally once you have your words made you then have to put them into sentences. The boy has a set of pulleys and is putting them together. He cuts some sentences into tall ones, while others are short.Of course you have to "mortar each sentence with punctuation."

The boy is hard at work with his nailer and doing a bit of rough framing because you have to "frame your sentences into paragraph villages."The cranes are out placing the paragraphs "into chapter cities." Work, work, work! You have to keep on going until you create the ultimate. . .a book!

This is an unusual book that may not appeal to all people. The text is minimal and the gist of the story is the construction of the basic elements of letters into words, sentences, paragraphs and chapters. This is a very unique way to introduce this building process. The art work is very engaging and many children will be fascinated by it.This book would be an excellent addition to any homeschool or classroom shelf. ... Book Description

Children have a natural affinity for language play; Pyrotechnics on the Page demonstrates how writing teachers can tap into it. This book provides a wealth of resources for teachers, including information on the roots and developmental importance of language play, a how-to on using the writer’s notebook as a playground for students to explore and experiment with verbal pyrotechnics, an in-depth look at the kind of language play commonly used by writers, twenty-four brand new craft lessons to bring pyrotechnics into the classroom, and an extensive bibliography of relevant mentor texts. Pyrotechnics on the Page is vintage Fletcher: personal, anecdotal, and practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring back the fun in teaching writing!
I bought this as soon as it came out since I trust Ralph Fletcher as a writer and as a teacher. But I had no idea I would have so much fun reading it. I started trying the experiments in my notebook and weaving them into my thinking for fall before I was out of the first few chapters. I can't wait to try these with students!

I'm a literacy coach in elementary classrooms. I know my students will delight in these ideas and sparks will happen--sparks of interest, sparks of delight, and sparks of great writing. I am recommending this book to all of the teachers I see now. We know we learn more when we're having fun. Naomi Shihab Nye said, "I am always reminding kids to, as Kim Stafford says, play with their writing, not just work on it." I think we all need this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything Perfect
This item arrived with no problem, quickly and was exactly what I wanted. The price was very fair and I am considering purchasing 2 more of these books from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great, I purchased it for my kids we took turns creating our own silly stories, Hey, its not only for kids, I enjoyed this book with them and it was lots of fun...Great for family quality time

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Lose Your Brains From Laughing Out Your Belly

This book reminds me of an activity once called an "ice breaker" which is a way of getting a group of people who don't know each other to get acquainted enough to want to interact together. In this case, the book is intended for young children to come up with "fill in" answers to questions or topics, and to write them into the open spaces on a slick surface.Once that is done, you flip the page and find these words "within a story" on the next sheet. There are 12 such activities, and once you try this with young children, or they try it with you, you will all be rolling on the carpet, laughing your bellies.

The cartoon-like drawings on the various pages give you an idea of the story's theme. It's a really cool book, and all you need are some ideas in your mind. You can actually write these stories over and over again, and they will be quite different.

At the beginning of the book, there are suggestions for interesting ways to play, like picking a specific letter with which to start each word, making the story even sillier. You might even want to take turns reading these "home made stories" out loud, that is, if you don't fall on the floor from laughing your brains out.

The special marker that comes with the book will be useful for re-writing more stories; you can use a dampened cloth to erase the story when you are finished. Have yourself a great time and laugh away the problems of the day, if you think you have any.Create your own activity and celebrate your silliness.
If I could, I would give this book 6 stars for its super silliousness, that is, if there is such a word!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever For Younger Children
We had gone on a small trip and my 7 year old granddaughter had not brought anything to occupy her time.I found this book and bought it for her.She has not put it down.It makes me so happy to hear the giggles from her as she reads her story. I would highly recommend this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny
My children are 3 and 5 and find these stories to be very funny. The stories are like an easier version of Mad Libs.I highly recommend this book.We like it so much I'm thinking of stocking up on them for birthday gifts.Just know that you should erase the marker right away.We left the writing on a funny story to re-read several days later and it was difficult to erase. ... From the supplier: A critical reading examines Luisa Valenzuela's strategy of writing which exploits the gap between the literal and the metaphoric to subvert the conventions of realistic representation. The stories analyzed to illustrate this argument include "Transparencia" (Tranparency), "Los enganosos preceptos" (Deceitful Precepts), and "El enviado" (The Messenger) from her latest collection of short stories, 'Simetrias,' the novel 'Realidad nacional desde la cama' (Bedside Manners) and the short story "Ciudad ajena."

Product Description
Hello! Please let me introduce myself, my name is Trenton and I am a word-warrior.My stories in this book are about my camp dream (at nine), a hamster (ten years old), our school bully )eleven), and a place I call "second shells" (after I graduated from the sixth grade).
You ,may think I am a little weird because I write myself into these stories. Most writers put other people in their tales, but I can't.I have to put myself into them to stay alive. In my last story, "The Land of Second Shells," you will find out why I have no choice.
Please don't skip to that story first because you will spoil my surprise.I'll give you this hint:"I write therefore I am".

A READING AND WRITING ADVENTURE

Trenton's four stories are a tapestry of self-expression through which he weaves the feelings of a child experiencing comradeship, loss, fear, and love.He champions the cause of reading and writing, the true anchors to being himself. His characters reveal themselves in a genesis of relationships.

ONCE UPON MY SUMMER CAMP DREAM
Bonding with two hurting cabin-mates, Trenton embraces their needs into his own curious explanation of himself. They share an adventure through a "conference dream" to the Spriti Children of Storytell.

ONCE UPON A HAMSTER
Mixing the vast separation of childhood fantasy with harsh realities of painful loss, two worlds collide and meld into a child's expectation.

ONCE UPON A BULLY
All of Trenton''s stories underscore relationships; in dream, it is with peers, in hamster it's with adults (mother and teacher), in shells it is with himself. Here, confrontation with fear is dispelled by a father figure.

ONCE UPON THE LAND OF SECOND SHELLS
The total of Trenton's existence is released through sharing his most vital secret to another, a "twin-humming bird" girl. ... Read more
