Una síntesis las formas de gobierno existentes en Europa y Norteamérica desde la época feudal hasta bien entrado el siglo xx. Un libro que merece ser estudiado por todos aquellos interesados en la historia política mundial, estudiantes de relaciones exteriores y todos aquellos con algún interés de comprender como funciona nuestra forma de gobierno. Después de que las cosas que generan grandes cambios pasan, podemos, después de un tiempo, ver que no son hechos aislados sino una cadena de hechos que generan una sucesión de cambios pequeños que usualmente desencadenan los grandes acontecimientos. Los libros de historia de la educación media se quedan en una explicación de los hechos históricos de una manera acartonada. Pasa esto y después pasa aquello, sin llegar al fondo. Es bueno que al alumno se le inste a investigar sobre las cosas que generan los grandes cambios y no solo presentarle de manera insulsa una serie de situaciones para que sean memorizadas.
El libro comienza con la economía y el gobierno en la era medieval. La sociedad feudal consistía en ese entonces en feudos que eran administrados por señores feudales. Esta economía era autosuficiente ya que no se pensaba en producir riquezas ni en exportación de productos. El cambio que dio al traste con esta sociedad fue lento y tuvo resistencia de varias partes, incluyendo la iglesia católica, que el transcurso vio la merma en su poder y privilegios.
La sociedad mercantilista, los pensadores cuyas ideas fueron usadas y mal interpretadas, la transición lenta y tortuosa hacia la democracia, las revoluciones que dieron al traste con la burguesía están detalladas en este libro de una manera muy interesante y sin la jerga correspondiente, de manera que es fácil de leer por cualquiera que no tenga experiencia en estos avatares de la política

I came out of it with one conviction We must at all costs avoid any renewal of such atroci ties. Many people thought as I thought thinking, however, carries no obligation. But this is the vow I made, a solemn vow, though there were no witnesses but myself I swear I shall always do everything in my power to prevent the outbreak of another war. And, you wonder, who was I to make such a vow Let me give you some idea. I was still fairly young not much more than thirty I had published a few books and had already begun to make quite a name for myself in small literary circles in France and else where. What I said and did seemed of very little interest to the general public and gave the govern ment little concern. Try to visualize it in a film A young, more or less unknown French writer, walking by himself along the street, swears he will prevent the next world war. Touching, yes, but rather ridiculous. But the young man was not crazy. All that happens in the world incessantly proves that nothing important is ever done unless far-reaching plans are made long in ad vance, at a time when people would laugh if they heard of them. It all goes to prove, and more and more clearly, that, in the long run, the most improb INTRODUCTION able and ridiculous plans triumph over the reason able and moderate ones. The trouble is that we almost always find audacity in conception among gangsters and the enemies of mankind. A number of people, both in this country and in the United States, have recently urged me to bring the story up to date. With the Prime Minister s permission, I have therefore collected all his speeches from May, 1938, down to the present day. This volume sees the fulfillment of all the darkest fears to which Mr. Churchill gave utterance in the earlier volume. By the time this set of speeches begins the situation had already become so desperate that less emphasis is placed upon our laggardly rearmament than in the earlier speeches. With the danger so close upon us, and with so little time to expand our defenses, Mr. Churchill clearly thought it more useful, in the hopes of deterring the aggressor, to dwell upon such elements of strength as we possessed rather than to exhibit our weakness nakedly to the world. Reading between the lines, however, the warnings persist with even more urgency than before. As in the previous volume, these speeches will be found not only to revive many warnings, whose timeli ness all can judge today, but to provide a running commentary upon the remorseless deterioration of the foreign situation. The book begins with Mr. Churchill s warning on the folly of handing over the Treaty ports to the Irish Free State a warning which, it is interesting to recall, was supported by only a handful of Members of Parliament. It carries us past the tremendous and mournful events at Munich to the inevitable and plainly pointed sequel in Prague. And so we are brought relentlessly stage by stage to the challenge of war which Mr. Churchill had so often urged could, by timely arrangements and adequate preparations, have been warded off. Thereafter, as First Lord of the Admiralty and, later, as ix x INTRODUCTION his speeches naturally become more official. This is a good book for anyone interested in WWII history.His speeches give Great Britain's point of view durning WWII, even before the war begins.America is mentioned several times in the book, but does this book does not give a very detailed description of what is going on in America durning this time.The book focuses on the war in Europe and Africa only.Japan is rarely mentioned.Overall this is a good book, comprised of Churchill's speeches. ...
