Writers get the benefits of a 10-week workshop in the craft without leaving their own homes with this informative, entertaining book. Its step-by-step guide recounts the experiences of six writers and their mentor, focusing on fiction but applicable to nonfiction writing as well.Amazon.com Review
His If You Can Talk, You Can Write is already afavorite among Amazon.com readers/writers. In this subsequent volume,Mr. Saltzman follows students in one of his L.A. writing workshopsover a 10-week period as they struggle, whine, complain, succeed, andmake art--everything all of us do when wrestling with the muse. Thefinished stories are published as an appendix in the back of the book, testimony to E.L. Doctorow's observation that writing is like drivinga car cross-country at night; you can only see as far as yourheadlights, but you can still get all the way there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like sitting down with a few friends......
This excellent book by Joel Saltzman chronicles the trials and tribulations of a group of writing students through a 10 week course with him. This is like a dream course I wish I could have partaken in.The writer's are supposed to write freely during the days they are not in his class -- which takes place at his home rather than an a cold, impersonal classroom. Some of these writers don't try very hard at it and give up easily. Some are gritting their teeth through bouts of writer's block and insecurity. Some are so captivated by their art that they go on to write through their blocks and fears, conquering the challenge writing brings to us all. There are six students.Three master their craft enough to complete their stories, which are published in the back of the book.

At the beginning of this review I said this book was like sitting down with a few friends. Here's why, the class most closely resembles a writer's group in that the participants bring in their work and read it to the group where it then is critiqued by their teacher and their fellow students. In reading this, you recognize things in yourself and your writing that need improvement as well as those that you have accomplished.A couple times you will smile and say, ah, I've done that. These are writers with fears and accomplishments that you can enjoy identifying with. And ... the whole thing is written in a style that makes you feel you are there, an observer of the group.

Now!Buy this book -- sorry mine will never be for sale.Get in gear, and write! This book will make you feel that you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the workshop-deprived, something to fill the void
Somewhere I read that more neophyte writers are writing well these days thanks to the popularization of writers' workshops. That's more bad news for those of us with inferiority complexes, who want to go somewhere with the scribbling but live wagon trains away from places where workshops flourish. How in the world can we competitively buff our stuff without a seasoned writer and a dozen deadly honest classmates looking on?The next best thing is to rely on self-help writers' books, a burgeoning genre of which this compares with some of the better examples like Anne Lamott's "Bird By Bird" and Rita Mae Brown's "Starting From Scratch."What I like about "If You're Writing, Let's Talk" is its emphasis on the revision process. For all its supercool LA chatter, the book offers a good lesson in critical thinking

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally a NOVEL approach to teaching the craft of writing.
Joel Saltzman's new book, If You're Writing, Let's Talk, reads like a novel, full of drama, characters and conflict, even as it lights the way for writers to follow on their own journeys to publication. It's the story of six students in a ten-week writing workshop Saltzman taught and their trek through the problems all writers face. Quotes from famous authors on nearly every page remind us that even the greats face the same problems we all do. As author, teacher, lecturer and sometime comedian, Saltzman has written for television and won awards from the American Film Festival, The Long Island Film Festival and the U.S. Forbes Playwriting Awards ... This innovative book explains writer's block (and other creative blocks) as a symptom of a larger disorder. These disorders can affect all creative and would-be creative people. This book is the first to treat writer's block from a classic, DSM-IV diagnostic perspective. Kantor identifies 10 kinds of writer's block, classified according to the underlying disorder that causes that block. Included in the text is a discussion of the general characteristics of blockage and how the therapist can distinguish between acute and chronic forms of block, as well as an exploration into the causes of block. With this book, Kantor has laid the foundation for the development of a successful treatment approach. Throughout the text, case studies drawn from historical sources and the author's patients illustrate the various kinds of block. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on the ready reference shelf of every aspiring or seasoned author
Sooner or later, every author will encounter the dreaded condition called 'writer's block'. This is when no ideas occur to the writer who may well sit and stair at a blank page in the typewriter or a blinking cursor on the computer screen for hours, days, weeks, and longer. For just such inevitable occasions, and drawing upon her many years of experience and expertise writing more than 30 plays (including fourteen of which were commissioned assignments complete with deadlines), Velina Hasu Houston has compiled a series of 'user friendly' and real-world productive activities and actions in "Writer's Block Busters: 101 Exercises To Clear The Deadwood And Make Room For Flights Of Fancy". Each exercise occupied a single page and is succinctly presented in one paragraph. Occasionally enhanced with quotable quotes, each exercise is designed to prompt the blocked writer to start composing on the spot. Here's an illustrative example: Homecoming: Character A has suffered torture, enslavement, insults, and disrespect in order to return to the side of a loved one. He or she returns home only to find that his or her loved one is gone. Place that sense of rupture and loss in your protagonist. Write. "Writer's Block Busters" should be on the ready reference shelf of every aspiring or seasoned author -- because no matter how gifted or inspired you may be in the pursuit of your craft, sooner or later that dreaded condition known as 'writer's block' will strike. That's when you will reach for your copy of "Writer's Block Busters" and be glad you have it handy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help for My Resume
Very helpful book for re-writing my resume after a decade break raising my children. Clear, simple and practical advice. The book really helped me focus and get organized. I followed the suggestions and created an outstanding CV that I am proud to present to potential employers.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a joke!Horrible!
This book was a total waste of money and time.I was looking for some new and cutting edge ways to present resumes and cover letters. All it contains is every example of every boring resume and cover letter you have ever seen.Don't believe me.On page 37, here's a real gem of what they consider a great cover letter.

Dear Sir,I noticed your advertisement for Sales Manager in the paper.I am very interested in pursuing this opportunity and have enclosed my resume for your review.LOL.Are you kidding me?The book contained more examples of letters that would sound good in about 1958, not 2009.

But what really makes this book a joke is the advice to not use I in your letters- duh.But then gives this letter example.Ready for this.Be sure to count all the I's.
A mutual acquaintance (do people still use the word acquaintance, lmao)recommended that I contact you.I have taken the liberty (taken the liberty- great writing, lol) of enclosing my resume.I now realize that I have been missing my calling.I love sales but have not been selling the products and services that I love.I am a strong sales professional.

Yep, don't use I.This book is a total joke. How anyone could give it 4 stars is beyond me except that the author has plenty of friends.

If you are expecting an up to date book on resumes, this is NOT it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resume resource for those without a clue
This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume.Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and a waste of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book! More than I expected by a mile!
I bought this book for obvious reasons, because I was convinced that I was "blocked". But I wasn't. And this book delivers SO much more than just a way out of the slump. It tackles ALL the reasons a writer can become stuck. Not only is there step-by-step info on writing a book quickly, there are also several options so that you can choose which superfast method is best for you. And there is great information on writing such as setting, point of view, and other topics I did not expect to find in a book about writer's block. But that information is part of why this book is so effective. I was having problems with point of view, and with the info I needed on that topic and a good, step-by-step plan set out for me, the problem I had been calling "writer's block" just disappearred. Great book! It should have been called "Everything You Need To Know To Write A Novel". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This dude is awesome
I loved, loved, loved this book. Not only has Palumbo been there, done Kotter, he's also a psychotherapist for plenty of Hollywood's hottest head cases. The quirks of their neuroses are eerily familiar, and he handles them with Buddhist restraint.

This book is FUNNY! It's human and simplifying. Warm and comforting. If you bear a resemblance to Sisyphus, it's enough to make you buy a weightlifting belt and get rolling again.

I appreciate Palumbo's emphasis on patience. What he calls taking "the long view" lends much breathability to what is often a suffocating process. This book is proof that allowing yourself days, weeks, years to unwind and refill that creative well is okay. And, amid the dry spells, to practice self-acceptance and forgiveness. As fears and pressures fall away, one clear thought emerges:

"Must. Write."

Mom doesn't do reverse psychology this well.

Stalk Dennis at [...]. He's has a new crime novel, Mirror Image. I look forward to seeing where his own process has led.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!
As an aspiring writer, I am challenged with all sorts of things that keep me from writing well. After getting this book, at the recommendation of some successful screenwriter's, it has helped me to identify the issues that create writer's block, and then battle them. This book has changed my approach to writing in the most glorious way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Writing from the Inside Out
A very practical and readable book on how to allow yourself to become a writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort and joy
One of the most humane and heartening books on the perils of the writing life I've come across, it's hard to recommend it highly enough. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could.

Based on his own career as a writer and as a therapist, Palumbo knows all the secret agonies serious writers face; and he has, through experience, gathered wisdom for dealing with all of them. He imparts this wisdom in gentle, down-to-earth chapters that always stress the real over the theoretical.

I came across this book at just the right time (recommended, I think, in one of Elizabeth Lyon's terrific writing guides) and now I don't know how I ever got along without it. I have a copy next to the chair where I work; I will refer to it often, and recommend it heartily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
Just what the doctor ordered for writers who wrestle with the demands of the writing life, which is all of us. Palumbo is a healer, and this book now lives on my nightstand. ... Read more

Normally I'd be skeptical of an author who gives so many examples from her own life and writing career, but for this book, it works extremely well. Her examples of harrowing career problems with big time editors andpublishing houses are not a solitary experience. How she made it throughthe muck and her advice should not be solitary either.I'm glad to knowsomeone has survived with their creativity intact. It gives me hope toovercome my own past and to write again--finally.
