5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all types of writing
I bought the book because of the other reviews here. The book exceeded my expectations.Although there are some places where this book, subtitled "Subconscious Techniques to Conquer Writer's Block," were too touchy-feely, the other 95 per cent of the book really delivered practical advice.

I liked the author's recommendations for keeping a "Magic Book," a place to store all your critical creative work on your target writing.Although most of the author's examples reference stories for TV and movies, her recommendations really fit nearly any type of creative writing. The author tells you about the contents of the Magic Book and teaches you many ways to add to this repository of creative thinking.

This book allows you to organize and focus your creative thinkingdirectly onto your story.

Unfortunately, there are too many techniques to list here. The author is particularly good on finding and developing initial story ideas.

Even though the book is targeted to screenwriting, I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to write creatively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Lessons and Realistic Examples
D'Vari's book offers excellent techniques to jump start one's creativity. She has spent years in Hollywood and her lessons, as well as her examples, are rooted in realism. The film examples (Fatal Attraction, Pretty Woman) represent some of Hollywood's greatest hits and deserve to be taught.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Lessons-Bad Examples
This book is a treasure chest full of great and exiting ways to unleash creativity and make great scripts. This book has helped me in many ways and has had a strong impact on how I look at writing.I do object, however, to the examples of other films used to back up what is being taught. These examples leave a bad tast in my mouth because they deal with many ungodly, immoral issues that should not be mentioned at all.The film industry is a powerful force in our nation.By filling it with immoral acts what do you think will be the result? These films should never be used for examples, be wary! This book has a great lesson but I do think the examples could have been different.

5-0 out of 5 stars It rocks!
Hi, I'm a screenwriter, story consultant, and former studio executive and I have found Script Magic helpful and entertaining.I'm at a place in my writing where I need lots of creative stimulus and the exercises and the breezy writing style were right for me.Sometimes you have to trick yourself into avoiding cliches or into opening up the deeper, truer sources of good work, and the book was good at giving some concrete ways to do that. This will become a classic for screenwriters but the creative way of thinking about writing will be useful for any form of storytelling. There's also a lot of practical info about the business end and some common sense about how you integrate writing into your life. It's worth reading just to shake yourself up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh and Fun
"Script Magic" is an amazingly fun and easy way to let your creativity run free. After reading and trying Marisa D'Vari's techniques you'll be chomping at the bit to put pen to paper or fingers on keys.I recently sold a screenplay and became a member of the Writers Guild.I wish I had this book a year ago, I'd have probably sold three by now. You'll never think about writing the same way again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars it does work!
The book claims to be able to break through writer's block, and the method actually works.
A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Break Writer's Block Now!WORKS!
Up front, I am a friend of Jerry's, but he doesn't even know I'm writing this. I'm writing it because I believe Jerry's book offers real help for blocked writers, or anyone who has something to write but instead suffers. I know what that's like. Did it for years. I won't say Jerry's book was solely responsible for my cure, but it might have been, if I found it sooner. I am cured now, and Jerry's book furthered the process--helped me really put that "blocked" business behind me. I'm now fully capable of turning out copy on demand. In fact, it's what I do for a living. I believe Jerry's book can help anyone. It's very simple and direct, and it gives you steps to follow that will take you from being a blocked writer to being a productive writing writer. If you're ready to stop being blocked, get it. Even if you're not ready, it'll help you get ready. Best of luck! And see you at the Nobel ceremonies! ... Read more

Excerpt: "The Day I Died" is the second single from electronic music artist Just Jack taken from his third studio album All Night Cinema. It was released on August 17, 2009. The song has already made the Radio 1 A-list, and XFM B-list, before the single was officially released. The song is fairly upbeat but somewhat satirical, as the lyrics illustrate slight, fortunate changes to an otherwise uneventful day-by-day life, implying the protagonist was decidedly unlucky. It took Just Jack three years to complete the song, after he wrote the first verse and a half. James Nesbitt in the promotional music video for "The Day I Died"The music video, premiered on July 28, 2009. Though Just Jack's song tells a story, the video does not follow it literally, and presents an expanded expression of the be-here-now theme: appreciating the small details of life before it is too late. The video was directed by Ben & Joe Dempsey and stars Northern Irish actor James Nesbitt, as a man waking up to the "best day of his life" only to discover at the end that he has already been killed by a taxi and has been reliving that day. As the video (and the day) begin, the man wakes up fully dressed, although visibly injured and with torn clothing. At breakfast, his son plays out an accident between toy cars and brings in a toy ambulance, foreshadowing the final death scene. During the day, the man's injuries and torn suit are not noticed by his family or the other characters, and are easily missed on the first viewing, but they suggest that we are seeing the day reinvented by the dead man, or at least informed by the dead m...http://booksllc.net/?id=23971024 ... Product Description
Lauren Cody's "Writer's block" is a collection of short stories and poems featuring vast types of themes. From the comical and silly, to the heartfelt and emotional, hopefully everyone can find something they like. The short story that inspired the title features a sarcastic and snippy heroine that readers will either love or hate. Her insecurities are expressed through her running commentary regarding finding the cure for writers block. This story was semi-autobiographical, and the story was the first written for this book."My New Life" is the story of a timid girl trying to make the transition to become a confident independent woman. Readers experience her epiphany of seeing that she is the master of her own future, and follow her through her first experiences being on her own."A Strange Occurrence in the life of Robert Wallace Parker" takes a different tone than the other stories contained in this book. Upon entering the life of a 37 year old man starting to feel the sting of a mid-life crisis, readers follow him through an emotional breakdown with a twist ending."Tyler at Twilight" is a romantic and fun story of young love. It tells a tale that anyone young at heart will relate with, and expresses emotions that will bring readers memories of their time falling in love.Meanwhile, "The Great Fast" is the inner thoughts of a hypochondriac who is dealing with a little hunger pain. It's a light and fun story that will make readers smile. The characters were developed with intents to be easy to relate to, and hopefully everyone can find some of themselves in one of the people or situations they endeavor. The poetry in this book ranges from the deeply emotional to the fun. Each poem reflects a different emotion, and each was written from a different state of mind.Touching upon everything from first love and heartbreak to a disdain for rhyming, these poems are all different. Some poems, such as "My Sweatshirt", "Lipstick", and "The Pillow Monster" are simple poems that intend to make the reader smile. The other poems contain more emotion, and should be left open to the readers own interpretation of what they mean. "It's not that Easy being green" uses the senses to describe the feeling of a color. And then on the other end of the spectrum, "A Movie" is an abstract view on life, taken from the view point of someone viewing a movie. The different styles and subject matter featured in "Writer's Block" displays a great range of thoughts and ideas. All of the poems and stories are unrelated to each other, and reflect many different situations. You might laugh, you might cry, you might hate it, but hopefully, you'll take the time to read it. ...
