Product Description
Praise for the first edition:

'A useful resource to have in any early years setting, providing a wealth of information within a very neat and compact book' - Special

'The WriteDance materials are wonderfully done. After meeting with Ragnhild a few years ago, I have been using many of these principles in my work with children. The methods definitely work and are definitely needed by today's kids' - Delina Robair, Developmental Child Specialist, USA

Write Dance is an exciting and innovative programme which uses music and movement to introduce handwriting to children. Write Dance movements are designed to help children feel happy and comfortable with their bodies, improving their motor skills and providing a strong foundation for writing.

Ranghild Oussoren developed the approach in Holland ten years ago and it has gone on to capture the imagination of children and teachers across Europe. In this new edition of Write Dance in the Early Years, practitioners are provided with a package of songs, stories and illustrations, as well as guidance on implementing Write Dance in their early years setting.

This book and audio CD introduces the nine themes of the Write Dance approach at the appropriate developmental level for the early years. The programme supports the Be Healthy, Enjoy and Achieve outcome of the Every Child Matters agenda. It also links to the following aspects within the six areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation stage:

- Creative Development through imaginative play, music and dance

- Physical Development through movement using equipment and materials

- Communication, Language and Literacy through handwriting

- Personal Social and Emotional Development through increasing self-confidence and self-esteem

This exciting and innovative programme has been found especially helpful for children with special educations needs, from learning difficulties to dyspraxia. ... Read more

Product Description
In the second edition of the foundational book in the ''Preschool Literacy Collection'', authors Carol Vukelich and James Christie present the core content and best practice strategies needed to provide preschoolers with effective early literacy instruction. Each chapter explains why the instructional strategies should be used and offers illustrations on how the strategies have been used in early childhood classrooms by outstanding teachers of language and literacy.

You will learn how to:

-teach phonological awareness in developmentally appropriate ways
-create a carefully planned, print-rich environment
-engage in children's play
-plan a daily schedule that meets children's needs and integrates language and literacy into all components of the curriculum
-effectively read aloud to children
-help parents promote their children's literacy learning.

Plus, a chapter on linking standards with assessment and instruction shows readers how to tie together the core ideas presented in the book.

This second edition features a new chapter on storybook reading that explores how sharing books with children helps them develop many of the skills that researchers have identified as essential for later reading success. Further, this edition has been updated to include more detailed information on grouping and planning the daily schedule, as well as updated research to reflect new trends and ideas in the field of early literacy. Professional development sections are included in each chapter, and new vignettes illustrate the strategies in use in real classrooms.

4-0 out of 5 stars An ambitious but well conceived book for children
There is a lot of information presented in this book. Perhaps too much foryoung children to absorb unless it is presented to them very slowly andsystematically. However children of all ages definitely have a fascinationfor "secret codes" or "symbols" and their meanings, which is essentiallywhat Chinese writing is to most people. The graphics are large and bold andthe text easy to follow, making it an appropriate reference for gradeschool children. The calligraphy alongside the simple line drawings allowchildren to easily see the resemblance between real life objects and theChinese pictographs. I am a teacher and often use this book when givingclassroom workshops on Chinese calligraphy. Some of the characters arerather small to see from a distance so I paint larger versions of them on8X10" cards. Children enjoy looking at the ancient pictographs first andthen trying to guess what they mean. After that we try matching the moderncharacters to the ancient pictographs, which is another fun activity. Wealways conclude the lesson with trying to write some of the charactersusing real brushes and ink. This experience brings to life everything thatthis book so ambitiously tries to present.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional tool to discover the world of written Chinese
This is the best introduction to Chinese characters that I have found in or outside of China. This book teaches stroke order and gives a basic history of characters showing how they have developed over time in a waythat is entertaining and makes sense. Simple enough for those with noChinese language experience, it is also an excellent resource for Chinesestudents struggling with writing and the character system.

4-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book for those of us struggling to learn Chinese.
Although written to be a children's book, Long Is a Dragon is an excellent tool for adult learners of the Chinese written system.I originally encountered the book while visiting a professional calligrapher. This light hearted, well animated and fairly matter-of-factual book, takes the mystery out of stroke order, character origins and all the complexities of Chinese writing. It is also refreshing and entertainingin its whimsical approach. This book is a must for anyone accustomed to the romanized alphabet who is serious about studying Chinese. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For the Reader's Workshop Novice
For the Reader's Workshop novice this is the book for you... and the second grade teacher of course! I cannot believe how much my students' and my colleagues students' learned from the lessons we created. The book does a really good job of laying out each day along with the goals for the day, week and unit. The only trouble we had was finding all of the books mentioned since many are out of publication. Thanks for a great book ladies!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting Started?
This book is 5 stars for those getting started with the use of inquiry in language arts and across the curriculum. The authors are clear and give a great window into their room. However, this book is only 3 stars for those that are actively engaged in inquiry teaching. The book focuses on Reading and Writing by walking you through 4 units of study.Including the how and why the teachers are doing what they are doing.Overall, it is a good book and offers a lot to those that are new to the idea of allowing students to think as you guide their thinking. ... Product Description

Jacqueline Pascal (1625-1661) was the sister of Blaise Pascal and a nun at the Jansenist Port-Royal convent in France. She was also a prolific writer who argued for the spiritual rights of women and the right of conscientious objection to royal, ecclesiastic, and family authority.

This book presents selections from the whole of Pascal's career as a writer, including her witty adolescent poetry and her pioneering treatise on the education of women, A Rule for Children, which drew on her experiences as schoolmistress at Port-Royal. Readers will also find Pascal's devotional treatise, which matched each moment in Christ's Passion with a corresponding virtue that his female disciples should cultivate; a transcript of her interrogation by church authorities, in which she defended the controversial theological doctrines taught at Port-Royal; a biographical sketch of her abbess, which presented Pascal's conception of the ideal nun; and a selection of letters offering spirited defenses of Pascal's right to practice her vocation, regardless of patriarchal objections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conflict of Conscience
This book is obviously for scholars. It translates the works of Jacqueline Pascal, the sister of Blaise Pascal. The most interesting piece is the long treatise on education for women. What I like the most was the feminist angle of the commentary.Conley brings out how Jacqueline Pascal fought typical oppressions of women in the seventeenth century: denial of education, the dowry system, the denial of spiritual rights.Especially strong is the discussion of Pascal's efforts to defend her rights of conscience in the Jansenist controversy. ... Write Dance is an innovative and exciting programme, widely used as a way of introducing handwriting using music, movement and exercise. It is especially helpful for children with special educational needs, from learning difficulties to dyspraxia.

In Write Dance in the Nursery, early years practitioners are provided with a package of songs, stories and role-play ideas designed especially for their settings. Supporting child-initiated play within the foundation curriculum and the ‘Birth to Three Matters’ framework, these provide an introduction to the nine themes in Write Dance approach at an appropriate developmental level.

The Write Dance Movements provide the children with a strong foundation for writing, and help them to feel happy and comfortable with their bodies, and this book and CD resource provides everything the early years practitioner needs to implement this exciting approach.

Ragnhild A. Oussoren worked for many years as a consultant graphologist in the Netherlands and in Sweden. Mixing her graphology skills with art and music, in the 90s she developed a completely new writing and movement method for all children aged 3-12 years irrespective of their movement skills. The Write Dance method has been so successful that it is practised in six languages and in many countries. Ragnhild is her own publisher in the Netherlands; she gives workshops in different countries and continues to develop the method.
