Product Description
His classmates have identified him as a friend of Jackson, who has Asperger Syndrome, and now Tyler is tormented by what that means in terms of his own personality. Over the course of this highly readable and swift-moving middle-grade novel (2nd to 6th grade), Tyler resolves this issue and in the process recalls incidents from previous school years, growing in his understanding of this unusual classmate. Written by a speech-language pathologist who works with children with autism spectrum disorders, this novel belongs on the library shelf of any middle-grade classroom. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to generate a discussion of labelling/disclosure, but wanting as work of fiction
Tyler and Jackson are both fifth grade students and they have been going to speech therapy together for years. Tyler goes to speech therapy because he has trouble with stuttering, and Jackson goes to speech therapy because he has trouble with the pragmatics of language. Because Jackson will be moving away to another state with his family, Tyler suggests that the class get him a going away present. Every one in the class contributes a page to a book for Jackson, and while Jackson and Tyler are at speech, they decide Tyler should be the one to present the book to Jackson. Tyler is worried that the class bully, Marcus, suggested Tyler for the job because then Tyler will be associated with the weirdest kid in the class, Jackson, in yet another way. Tyler's concerns drag out after he suggests to his parents that he may not want to present the book and they have his speech therapist discuss his cousin Drew with him. His cousin Drew in also quite odd, but Tyler is more accepting of Drew because he has overheard his mother talking to his aunt about some Burger Disease his cousin has. As a result his mother becomes upset and initiates the conversation with the speech therapist discussing how Asperger's Syndrome is not a disease but just another way of being. As a result, Tyler concludes that Jackson must have Asperger's Syndrome since Jackson is just like Drew. In light of this new information, Tyler decides to be more accepting of Jackson's odd behaviors and help Jackson out by standing up for him to the class bully. The message of the book regarding labels is unclear: on the one hand the adults in the story are telling Tyler that labels are not important because it is important to accept all people regardless of labels or quirks, and on the other hand the actual practices of Tyler show that people, especially children, are more likely to accept the strange behavior of others if they know there is a reason for that behavior. The conclusion feels drawn-out and inevitable, and there are times when the reader's interest may wander during the story. Recommended for generating a discussion on labels and labelling/disclosure, but if looking for a story about an individual with Asperger's Syndrome, instead see Kathy Hoopmann's Blue Bottle Mystery: An Asperger Adventure (Jessica Kingsley, 2001 ISBN 978-1-85302-978-3)Blue Bottle Mystery: An Asperger Adventure (Asperger Adventures)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for your Asperger's Child
Per previous reviews, the book is a great read with a great message about friendship. As a parent of a child with Asperger's I would like to offer one caution:this book is a great one to offer those who may be seeking to better understand a child with Asperger's, but would not be a great fit for the Asperger's child himself.Since the book is written from the neuro-typical viewpoint, Jackson comes off as pretty weird--loved, but weird.

Also, disclosure of Jackson's syndrome comes off as somewhat "hush hush."This is, I believe, because the author does an excellent job of depicting the societal dilemma of disclosure in the world of schools and teachers. To disclose is to explicitly state the Syndrome that describes the child's unique personality. It is not generally considered ethical for teachers to decide to disclose; young children with this syndrome may not have the adequate judgment to disclose (hence Jackson's parent's rule that he not do so); and parents' distance from those to whom the information would be most valuable--e.g. friendly schoolmate, Tyler--often prevents them from disclosing even if they would want to do so.

I would recommend this book to school personnel and to children and families who have friends with Asperger's Syndrome, but would turn to other resources for a good read for your young Aspie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inclusion & Tolerance
Tyler has always been nonplussed by his classmate, Jackson. From the time the boys were in kindergarten, they were classmates and also attended speech class together.Tyler stuttered during the early grades and Jackson had a tendency to be very literal in his interpretation of what people said.

Although the boys were never friends in the intimate sense, Tyler would go to bat for Jackson and defend him when other kids picked on him.A kind girl in their class genuinely cared about Jackson and insisted that Tyler keep standing by him.

By the time the boys are in 6th grade, Tyler is nominated by his class to present Jackson with a class gift.He does not want to do this; reverts to stuttering (only this time it is deliberate) to get out of making a speech for Jackson and generally looks for a way out.

Memories of Jackson's behavior in class during their early grades hound Tyler; he realizes that Jackson bears a strong behavioral resemblance to his 6-year-old cousin, Drew.Drew has Asperger's Syndrome, a neurobiological condition that is the spectrum partner of autism. As he mulls this over, he realizes that Jackson has Asperger's Syndrome. He confronts his classmate, armed with this new insight and Jackson gives him a clinical definition of the term.

Tyler realizes that Asperger's is not a death knell to a full life; Jackson fortunately has been included in the full school program at all times.

This is a truly heartwarming book that presents a very realistic character with Asperger's Syndrome and is a wonderful story about acceptance and inclusion.Definitely a must have!

Be sure to read Marc Littman's masterpiece, EDDIE AND ME ON THE SCRAP HEAP as a companion book to this one.You will be very glad that you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jackson Whole Wyoming
This book is a delightful read and holds your attention from beginning to end. It is told from a childs viewpoint of trying to understand other children who are not like themselves and how parents and teachers can be there to help. I have forwarded it to my daughter in college who is majoring in elementary education. Thanks, Joan

5-0 out of 5 stars ON JACKSON WHOLE WYOMING
This witty story is a lighthearted and so very understanding
of a Asperger Syndrome boy and his friends. It is a fast-paced
and lucid insight of the difficulties Jackson faces in the
world of school children.

Jackson is described by his fellow classmate Tyler throughout
the reading with sometimes unusual...sometimes misunder-
stood...sometimes humorous incidents madeby Jackson which
confuse him and the other classmates.

Jackson Whole Wyoming is a wonderful source for parents
and teachers to delve into the feelings of the child with
Asperger Syndrome, as well as his classmates and friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed Joan Clarks' keenly sensitive book
and have learned of a topic of which I knew very little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational for secondary education teachers
Sheryl Lain's commitment to her students and to her pedagogical method's may be hard to replicate, but the safe and loving community that she strives to create in each class is a goal worth striving for.Her methods are nota fix-all for the problems in our education system, but I do believe that building community enables us to become better teachers. The examples and stories in this book are a great place to start for anyone wishing to enrich their classroom environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for educators; a way to save our schools!
Most teachers and administrators in today's schools are worried sick about what's happening to alienated students and wondering what they can do to affect positive changes.Sheryl Lain's book gives some easy, cleardirectives and should be a "must read" for them.As Adam, one of Lain's students, says, "If there was more love in the realworld like in here, I think there would be a lot less crime andviolence."'Here' refers to Lain's class where each individual isprized and encouraged to embrace the larger picture which includes everyoneelse.Lain creates vivid pictures of real kids--and as she oftenshares with them what she writes about them, the reader sees some of thesestudents begin to change. The students, likewise, are encouraged to giveto their peers through writing. The author maintains, "Writingconnects people" --and with all this writing and sharing comes unity. But it's more than a book about teaching writing and reading and inspiringlively discussions. We get intimate insights into the types of childrenwho make up a school. We meet the anarchist kid, the homeless boy, thegirl who's held in too-tight restraints by her anal-retentive father, thekid who's been moved around too often, the one who's seen terrible violencein the home, the happy kid who extends his attitude to everyone, the shygirl who winds up inviting the entire class to a party--and many, manymore.Though most of the students wind up changing for the better, theauthor pulls no punches, does not 'sugar-coat'.There's the kid on theparking lot who calls Lain "Bitch."She lets him know how thisfelt, handing him a poem which says in part:"Before my brainregistered the insult / I'd smiled at you/ in greeting/Now yoursunglasses mirror/ my crooked smile/ slipping sideways down my face." We don't know if this kid changed or not, but at least he read the poem. I think all teachers, even those not involved in language arts, shouldread this book.Just as Lain is able to change the minds of some of herstudents, I believe strongly that this book can change the minds and heartsof some adults. ... Product Description
Cokeville, Wyoming was the perfect slice of AmericanPie--a rural community surrounded by ranches and built by committedfamilies with strong religious convictions; certainly not the typicalterrorist target--precisely why David Young chose it as the place toseize his hostages.

Shortly after lunch, Young and his wife charged the CokevilleElementary School toting a small arsenal of weapons and pushing a cartcarrying a deadly bomb. One hundred fifty-siz children and teacherswere herded into a single classroom and the terror began.

But something was different. This was home-grown terrorism with adifferent motivation.David Young's twisted and deranged intent wasto blow up the school creating a mass murder-suicide that would plungethem all into a "Brave New World" where he would rule over thechildren.

"When Angels Intervene to Save the Children" is a basis for the CBSmovie "To Save the Children".The real story of this incidentunfolded during interviews with school therapists and parents.Thechildren's accounts attributed their survival to angels dressed inwhite who instructed and protected them and told them to stay calm.Fact by fact, the authors described every hour of the terrifyingordeal and recount piece by piece the children's stories of themiraculous escape. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars True Uplifting Story With Many Witnesses
I can not remember the first time I heard the name of this book, but when I finally tried to get it so as to be able to read it, I went to the library here in Orange County, CA. They had the book, but it was at the San Francisco Library and had to be special ordered. Then they would not let me take it out of the library. I had to read it there.

A year or so later, I was looking at books at Deseret Book store. As I was walking out of the door there was an, "On Sale," table with a variety of books and pamphlets. There was one copy of, "When Angels Intervene to Save the Children." I purchaased it immediately.

I used it as my selection in our book club July, 09. The other women loved it. I love it. It is a testimony of over 200 people as tothe reality that there is a God, we have gaurdian angels who love us and in this case, by scientific proof (as much as you can scientifically prove powers beyond our ability to measure) established that ANGELES did intervene to save the children in this ture story.Meada Ouzounian ... Product Description
Very little is known about how superintendents respond to and view the challenges brought about by increasing external performance demands on their schools. This important study uses a multi-case study format to create portraits of five rural superintendents, the challenges they face and their responses to those challenges. The participant perceptions were organized into five themes: declining enrollment, isolation, board and community relations, celebrated accomplishments, and rural schools in contrast with urban or suburban schools. The superintendents were most proud of changes they had made to improve instruction in their districts. They spoke of challenges with bringing professional development to teachers in isolated rural areas; declining enrollment and closing schools; federal mandates; school facilities; serving in multiple roles; and state bureaucracy. There are many misconceptions about rural schools by the general public and even less about the tremendous stress of being a superintendent in a rural school. ... Read more

Product Description

Ryan wants just one thing: to be a cowboy -- a working cowboy -- on the large Saddlebow Ranch in Wyoming, where he and his family live. Ryan, a tall seventh-grader, knows the dangers of ranch life: Once his father was cow boss, but now, after an injury, he is simply the ranch caretaker, seeing that fences are mended and watching over the family's few head of cattle. Even so, Ryan does not change his mind.

However, Ryan's older brother, Gil, sees dangers greater than injury ahead. He and the men who belong to the Mountain Patriots Association, a local militia group, are convinced that the United States government, foreign immigrants, and people who are racial minorities are going to take over the area. Not without a fight, however: The Mountain Patriots are armed for battle. It will take men, real men like them, Gil believes, to save their part of the West for the white race.

As the ranching community becomes increasingly divided between those who accept the views of the Mountain Patriots and those who do not, Ryan is torn. Is Gil right? Some of what he says sounds logical. Or are those who disagree, but who also sound sensible, right?

Clearly, confrontation and disaster are on the way. Ryan does not plan to be in the middle of it when it comes, but that is where he finds himself. And that is where, as a consequence, he learns what it really means to be a man, what it takes to build a good future, and how to find your place in a changing world. ... Read more

Gerard
Walker's Crossing
By Phyllis.R.Naylor

Just imagine you being a 12 year old boy that has always wanted to be a cowboy for all of your life and then your dad rips your dream away from you and says since one the cowboys had did something illegal and accidentally hurt your father and he says that you are not allowed to be a cowboy cause of what happened.
Then when you think you're off the hook and will not get in to any trouble cause your dad has died your brother joins the C.P.F. the Cowboy Protective Force.

This kids name is Ryan Walker and he always wanted to be a cowboy when he grew up,
After a few weeks his father was in a accident with a cowboy and some of his friends got it to a fight and he got shot and was sent to the hospital. They got the bullet out of him and he got stitches. When he came home from the hospital and they asked what had happened to you? and dad answered I got shot by a cowboy and Ryan said no they wouldn't they couldn't, no then dad said yes they did and they got away with it and I don't want you to a cowboy ever then out yells Ryan noooooooooo why then dad says because of what they do and the way they act and that's the end of that now go to bed.

So if you want an adventure and mysteries book just go and pick up Walkers Crossing By Phyllis.R.Naylor

4-0 out of 5 stars Walker's Crossing
Walker's Crossing was The best book I have Ever read. Usually when I read a book, I get bored and I don't finish the book. When I read Walker's Crossing, I read the book. I was very interested in the book. I used to want to be a cowboy when I was younger. When Lon Walker got hurt,I thought it was cool that Gil Walker and Ryan Walker helped out on the Ranch. If I was a girl, I would want to be a Junior Rodeo Queen too.Charlene never gave up.I learned alot about what cowboys really do on a Ranch.I urge everyone in the world to read Walker's Crossing. It's a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction
"Walker's Crossing" is an excellent example of historical fiction as it brings to life the prejudicial views of the Ku Klux Klan and shows how prejudice affects a community.Ryan Walker is a seventh grade boy who lives on a ranch in rural Wyoming. All Ryan wants is to be a cowboy for Saddlebow Ranch, where his father is the foreman.Ryan's good-for-nothing 22-year old brother, Gil, becomes involved with the Mountain Patriots Association, a group formed to drive out all "minorities" from the area.

Ryan's best friend, Matt, becomes a junior member of the Patriots and starts spreading racial propoganda around their junior high school. Then a friend's father is killed in a helicopter crash caused by the Patriots, and Ryan tries to help his friend deal with the loss of his father.Ryan's brother, Gil, is put in jail.

Throughout the book, Ryan is described as being "too tall and too skinny", made fun of because of his appearance. This story uses prejudice and differences among people to explore how we find common ground and acceptance in order to build character.Ryan remains true to his friends, despite ridicule from others, and finds an inner strength he did not know he possessed. At the end of the story, he is offered that job at Saddlebow - and Ryan learns that honesty, integrity and trust win over hatred and ignorance.

A wonderful story for young people and adults alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique coming of age story set in contemporary America
