The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. Extractions: Yemen is located at the southwest corner of the Arabian peninsula, between the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the deserts of interior Arabia; a strategic location the inhabitants of Yemen have often taken advantage of for control of commercial ship traffic passing between the Red Sea into the Indian Ocean. A high mountain chain running roughly north-south paralleling the western Red Sea coast dominates Yemen's topography, and less dramatic tablelands parallel the Indian Ocean coast. Inland of the mountain ranges, stony deserts meet the southern end of the great sand desert of Arabia. Yemen's varied terrain, in conjunction with the dispersal of rainfall brought by the annual Indian Ocean monsoon, produces a diversity of topographical and environmental conditions within a relatively small area. A hypothetical east-west cross section roughly at the latitude of Yemen's capital, Sana'a illustrates this. The western coast, the Tihama, is a flat, nearly sea level sandy coastal plain 20 to 50 km wide. East of the Tihama, the terrain rises steeply to mountain peaks up to more than 3,000 m above sea level. The central highlands are plateau-like, characterized by intermontane plains and basins fertile for agriculture. The eastern mountains do not reach elevations as great as those in the west, and more gradually descend through rocky terrain to interior desert less than three hundred horizontal kilometers from the ocean. A range of climatic variations exists both between and within these changes in terrain and elevation. The western coastal strip has a hot, humid, semitropical climate, while the higher reaches of the mountains experience regular killing frosts in winter. Rainfall is greatly varied, ranging from almost none on the humid coastal plain and the interior desert to as much as 1000 mm a year in portions of the highlands (see
