In response to the situation, all available resources are being mobilized to ensure the injured receive proper medical attention. Yemen's Government has charged an investigative committee with establishing the nature and causes of this shocking explosion. The committee will be using all available means, and will be working in close collaboration with American investigators who are already in Aden. Though there are predictions in the western media that the explosion may be the result of a terrorist act, the government of Yemen is reserving judgment pending the outcome of the investigation. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. In 2000, Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed to a delimitation of their border.

"We warn this impudent government that has carried out this cowardly crime, that Muslim youths abroad will not stay idle. "Muslim youths are looking forward to drinking your blood... We swear we will make you suffer the same fate, destroying your buildings, turning your wives into widows and your children into orphans," the statement said. Egyptian newspapers reported Abdel Mottaleb was stabbed and shot to death outside a mosque in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on 22 July. The papers quoted Egypt's ambassador in Sanaa as saying that a Syrian national had killed the cleric. Egypt has charged Yemen and Sudan with harboring Muslim militants opposed to President Hosni Mubarak's government.
