One of the most common requests we get here at the National Mentoring Center is for information on the latest research related to youth mentoring. In this FAQ we highlight some of the issues around mentoring research and point out some of the best findings and research reports. At the bottom of this FAQ you will find links to the materials discussed. Why is it so hard to find good research data on youth mentoring? Although there has been an explosion of growth in youth mentoring programs in the last decade, it is important to realize that there are still few well designed mentoring studies that demonstrate strong outcomes. The task of finding good data is complicated because it takes research skills to compare outcomes published in a peer reviewed academic journal with outcomes reported on a program's website. However, when the data of the rigorous mentoring studies are combined with other smaller or less rigorous evaluations of youth mentoring programs, the possible outcomes associated with youth mentoring start to emerge. Fortunately some researchers are helping us "research challenged" individuals synthesize the various mentoring research. In 2002, Child Trends, a Washington DC-based nonpartisan research center, published an excellent synthesis of research findings called Mentoring Programs and Youth Development: A Synthesis. Dr. David DuBois and colleagues also published in an academic journal, a study that examined 55 studies and evaluations of youth mentoring. Finally, Dr Jean Rhodes published an excellent book on the topic of youth mentoring titled, Stand by me: the risks and rewards of mentoring today's youth.

BBBS affiliates tend to carefully screen, train, and support their volunteers, and maintain a degree of quality control. In fact, most BBBS programs require a years commitment of their volunteers, to whom they provide at least six hours of training and ongoing supervision. Unfortunately, this level of training and support is not available in many of the mentoring programs that have emerged in recent years. In fact, a survey of more than 700 mentoring programs found that 36% of volunteers received less than two hours of training and 22% received none at all. Extractions: Lessons Learned from the Hospital Youth Mentoring Program Executive Summary Research on mentoring programs has demonstrated that a carefully structured mentoring program can be an effective intervention for disadvantaged youth. It can significantly reduce the initiation of drug and alcohol use, improve school attendance and performance, improve relationships with peers and family, and make youth less likely to commit certain forms of violence (Tierney and Grossman, 1995). But what we know about mentoring's effectiveness relates only to young teenagers and only to youth in programs where the mentoring relationship is friendship-oriented, focusing on giving youth extra emotional support. So the question remains: "What is the potential of mentoring for older teens?" As youth get older, many become increasingly disconnected from traditional institutions, such as the school, family and community organizations (Sipe and Ma, 1998). This disconnect often occurs at critical times during the transition to adulthood. Youth may not come into contact with adults who have the knowledge and resources to help them form and achieve post-secondary education and career goals. Traditional programs that aimed to fill this gap, such as employment and training programs and basic skills training, have not been able to do so with much effectiveness (Bloom et al., 1993).

A special friendship with an adult mentor has given 16 year old Ashlee Newham, a young participant in the YWCA's Big Sister/Big Brother Program, a new found motivation to enrol in the Year 10 Certificate of General Vocational Education at TAFE. Ashlee's strong commitment to the program has also culminated in an invitation to join the Parramatta Advisory council of the Program to which she brings enthusiasm, creativity and a new young energy. Ashlee was matched over a year ago with Big Sister, Joanna Karavasilis, and has identified her relationship with Joanna as being influential in the marked changes in herself and her life over this time. "My friendship with Joanna has helped me make decisions that have changed my life for the better," Ashlee says. "The impact of this match has been amazing," according to Jessica Connelly, the YWCA's Youth Mentoring Services Manager. "Ashlee is the eldest child at home in a sole parent family and is very protective of her family. She was referred to the Program when she was going through a difficult phase in her life and since being matched hasn't looked back."

Meanwhile, the demand for mentors exceeds the supply and program director Jeannie Bromberg says she could make use of 20 more mentors. Its a program in which the mentor, the adult, spends four to 10 hours monthly for one year with a child in various activities. The program, as of last week, had 17 active matches and two more mentors are needed immediately. Four mentor applicants are going through the approval process and four kids are waiting to be matched to them if they meet the criteria in such areas as background checks and references. Beyond those potential matches there are six other youths waiting to be matched, according to Bromberg. Its an even mix of boys and girls and they are not just from single-parent families, said Bromberg. The program is for any child who can benefit from having another caring adult in his or her life. An adult who will support them, encourage them to develop their character and capabilities and to contribute to their community, Bromberg said of the criteria for a mentor.

Youth mentoring programs have become increasingly popular in the United States so much so that mentoring will be a component of President Bushs USA Freedom Corps. However, according to a new University of Missouri-Columbia study, the benefits that mentoring programs advertise are not always the benefits that kids receive. Although these programs show promise, there is a lot of overselling when it comes to youth mentoring, said David DuBois, associate professor of psychological sciences and lead author of the study. DuBois research team analyzed 55 independent studies of volunteer youth mentoring programs. Overall, the researchers found only a small benefit for the average youth. Youth from backgrounds of environmental disadvantage were found to receive the most benefit from being in mentoring programs. However, they also found that poorly implemented programs could have adverse effects on at-risk youth, such as those who have experienced neglect or abuse. Its not realistic to think that a mentoring program can support all of a childs needs, especially if that child is vulnerable to begin with, said DuBois, who himself is a mentor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America. We need to be sure that programs dont do more harm than good.
