Demand for mentors exceeds by far their supply. And yet, some of them do exist and their number grows. SOLUTION: Congregations have established mentoring programs to instill discipline, transmit values, and provide positive role models to the citys most vulnerable youth. Each summer for more than 40 years, Jewish children from around the Midwest have come to Goldman Union Camp Institute in Zionsville to learn about Jewish history and ethics and to take part in recreation. About 300 4 th through 10 th graders attend each of the two month-long summer sessions. Another 30 to 40 12 th graders enroll in Avodah, an intensive nine-week program of work, study, and social experiences. Rabbi Ron Klotz, director of the camp, describes it as a celebration of Jewish life. Goldman Union is one of 12 camps owned and operated by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, an organization of about 900 Reform congregations. As such, it takes a liberal approach to Judaism, Klotz says. We want children to learn everything about Judaism. Then they have the latitude to make decisions when theyre olderwhether they will keep kosher, how they will observe the holidays. There are many choices. Many Christian and Islamic organizations offer a similar programa camp or vacation Bible school that offers recreational opportunities, but whose main purpose is to teach children the fundamentals of a faith tradition.

The commitment is for a minimum of two hours a week for one calendar year. The first step to getting started is to attend a one-time orientation session. The Youth Mentoring Program began in Spring 2000 with the first mentor/mentee match occurring in June. The program grew out of "Mentor Michigan" , a statewide initiative that seeks volunteers to match with youth across the state. The program is based out of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, but is promoted as a prevention tool in keeping youth out of the juvenile justice system.

Youth range in age from 6-14 and experience adjustment difficulties at home, school and/or the community. One youth writes, "My mentor means a lot to me because I've never had anyone take time out of their day just to be with me and I respect her for that." Volunteers are asked to share a minimum of 4 hours (bi-weekly) with their protege for a one-year period. Volunteers must enjoy youth and have time to share- 4 hours a month minimum. There is a screening procedure and training requirements initially and the volunteer must possess a valid NYS driver license and transportation. They must be at least 21 years of age. Volunteers must be positive role models.

Gov. Mike Johanns said he wants to put $1.5 million of state funds toward career and youth mentoring programs, matched by equal amounts of private ufnds or locally raised dollars. "We have an obligation to give Nebraska's young people opportunity and hope," Johanns said. "The dollars I am proposing for this initiative are literally an investment in the future." His proposal calls for putting $1 million of state funds toward school-to-work programs. When matched with $1 million of other funds, the money would rebuild programs started earlier with federal support, he said. the federal dollars are to end in October. "Sometimes investment by the state can become the catalyst," Johanns said.
