The government will further explore the question of whether the mandatory retirement age for deputy judges should be increased from 65 to 75. "The government recognizes it has a constitutional obligation to respect judicial independence and is satisfied that the commission made every effort to ensure its decisions are reasonably consistent with other jurisdictions," Justice Minister James McLachlan said. As recommended, the salary for Yukon Territorial Court judges will increase to $178,000 on April 1, 2003. The report recommends a series of retroactive increases that take salaries from the current $141,702 to $166,000 per year as of September 1, 2001 to $172,000 on April 1, 2002; and to $178,000 on April 1, 2003. The salary of the Senior Presiding Justice of the Peace will be increased from its present level of $66,799 to $85,000 per year as of September 1, 2001 and then to $87,000 on April 1, 2003. The estimated total impact over three years for the Yukon government to implement the recommendations made by the commission and pay for the costs associated with the commission process is about $3.2 million. This includes a one-time retroactive adjustment to the judicial pension plan of about $1.5 million that the commission felt was necessary to rectify the pension plan currently available for the Yukon's three territorial court judges.

It uses a five-step process that includes an internal departmental review, consultations with First Nations (native Canadian groups), a call for nominations, a review process, and a call for bids. During the fourth step, the review process, the public is given 45 days to voice its opinion to the government. The area in question is the Peel River Watershed, and the Yukon chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) has registered its opinion by calling on the Yukon government to cancel the area's nomination for oil and gas development. However, Scott Kent, minister of economic development for Yukon Territory said, "We're following the five-step process, so we're consulting the Yukon people before we move forward." The review process inviting public input about the Peel River Watershed ends Sept. 21.
