Product Description
Yemen's modern history is unique and deserves to be better understood. While the borders of most Middle East states were defined by colonial powers after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, a single Yemeni state was not formed until 1990. In fact, much of Yemen's twentieth-century history was taken up constructing such a state, forged after years of civil war. The book is augmented by illustrations, maps and a detailed chronology. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
If you're looking for a book to get a layman's understanding of Yemen then avoid this one like the plague. It is totally incomprehensible even for someone with a university degree. It has clearly been written by an academic whose target audience are other academics. This book is as dry as the deserts around Yemen--rub this one too hard and it'll burst into flames!I tried to read it 3 times and couldn't get past page 10.THIS IS THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER BOUGHT FROM AMAZON.Now I have to buy YEMEN: DANCING ON THE HEAD OF SNAKES...which I understand is a much easier read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
I spent three months in Yemen last year and bought this book before I went. I'm glad I did, because it turned out to be the perfect primer. A HISTORY OF MODERN YEMEN gives a clear, accessible account of the civil wars throughout the twentieth century that preceded the union of the two Yemens in 1990; and towards the end it offers penetrating insights into the way a new upper class has emerged along with a new desperate underclass. Paul Dresch is also good at highlighting how, despite unification, a north-south divide continues to plague a drive for a true national identity. This book struck me as unusally accessible for the general reader/traveller considering it is principally aimed at academics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rich with details
I first picked up this book to validate its' authenticity, being from Yemen myself. To be honest, I learned a few facts that I was able to impress my colleagues with. Thanks! ... Read more

Product Description
This study focuses on the motives of South Yemen's leaders in developing a revolutionary strategy. Until the late 1970s they engaged mainly in insurgency in Oman and northern Yemen, but by the 1980s they had shifted toward emphasizing long-term strategic co-operation with the USSR. This evolution is analyzed against the backdrop of changes in the South Yemeni leadership and its ideological underpinnings and regional perceptions. ... Read more

Product Description
Examining the unification process between North and South Yemen, this study begins with the preparations during the 1970s and '80s, which preceded union in 1990. It then examines the subsequent evolution of unity and the problems which led to internal war and the occupation of South Yemen by North Yemeni forces in 1994, concluding with some thoughts on the implications of this forced unity. Within the broad context of post-Cold War conditions, the Gulf War and inter-Arab relations, Yemeni hopes for unification are examined, as are the reasons why these were to be frustrated, with the co-existence of two rival state systems and communities. Attention is paid to the role of Islamic and tribal groups and values, and special emphasis is placed on the convulsions accompanying democratization. ... Read more

Product Description
The two Yemens--the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY)--both occupy strategic positions on the oil-rich Arabian Peninsula. As an essential component of Saudi Arabia's work force, the Yemenis' emerging nationalism and political restlessness are crucial to the future stability of the region--a fact long-recognized by the Soviet Union. Rich in information and insight, The Soviet Union and the Yemens is the first book in the English language to chart Soviet-YAR and Soviet-PDRY influence relationships. The author takes a clear, chronological approach to the subject: he traces the evolution of Soviet policy in the region, and considers the ways in which domestic developments have helped shape Soviet moves and were in turn affected by them. Stephen Page describes the various techniques and the Soviets have used to court the two Yemens since the mid-1950s, and explains how these have influenced the relations between countries in the Arab world, especially Saudi-Yemeni relations, as well as relations between the Soviet Union and the United States. The author provides a clear appraisal of the subtle nature, and limits, of Soviet influence. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be Aware of What You're Buying!
Betty Burnett's book is nothing more than a compilation of weekly news magazine articles available after the bombing. This is a book that belongs on a middle school shelf. I realize now that Rosen publishing does scholastic books. There are only 65 pages in the book from forward to appendix. There is only one first person account of the bombing. The heroic work of the crew is not discussed in any detail. There was a fantastic opportunity to discuss the challenge faced by the female chief engineer Deborah Courtney to save the ship; a first I believe in the anals of naval lore. Many of the pictures do not belong in the book as they are not of the Cole.I will donate the book I bought to my local middle school library. ...
