Known as the Determined Warrior, this is an exceptional ship that has earned a special place in United States naval history. It is the 17th ship in the Arleigh Burke destroyer class. The ship is named in honor of Sergeant Darrell S. Cole, USMCR who was born in Flat River, Missouri. He exemplifies the sacrifices and contributions of many Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen of the World War II generation. He fought in nearly every major combat engagement in the Pacific Theater. His actions at the battle of Iwo Jima resulted in being awarded the Medal of Honor and clearly define the ship's motto of "From Valor, Glory". This ship is an American success story and defines the very best qualities of our country. The current crew onboard represents 38 of the 50 states, adn is a continuum of the patriotic, courageous, and brave individuals who comprised the original crew, the crew who battled to save the ship in Yemen, the crew who rebuilt the ship with the help of equally talented and dedicated shipyard workers, and the crew who finally returned COLE to the fleet.

In addition to the coverage of the USS Cole attack, there is extensive material on Yemen, with information about geography, people, government, the economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues.

Editorial Review

Book Description
Does political inclusion produce ideological moderation? Schwedler argues that examining political behaviour alone provides insufficient evidence of moderation because it leaves open the possibility that political actors might act as if they are moderate while harbouring radical agendas. Through a comparative study of the Islamic Action Front party in Jordan and the Islah party in Yemen, she argues that the IAF in Jordan has become more moderate through participation in pluralist political processes, while the Islah party has not. The variation is explained in part by internal group organization and decision-making processes, but particularly by the ways in which the IAF has been able to justify its new pluralist practices on Islamic terms while the Islah party has not. Based on nearly four years of field research in Jordan and Yemen, Schwedler contributes both an important theory of ideological moderation and detail about these powerful Islamist political parties. ... Book Description
Sheila Carapico's book on civic participation in modern Yemen makes a pathbreaking contribution to the study of political culture in Arabia. The author traces the complexities of Yemen's history over the past fifty years, considering its response to the colonial encounter and to years of civil unrest. Challenging the stereotypical view of conservative Arab Muslim society, she demonstrates how the country is actively seeking to develop the political, economic and social structures of the modern democratic state. This is an important book that promises to become the definitive statement on twentieth-century Yemen. ... Read more
