Book Description
Over the past decade, urban communities have experienced unprecedented social, economic, and political transformation. Globalization and de-industrialization have contributed to the exodus of jobs, produced higher levels of inequality, and consequent, furthered marginalization of the urban poor. Urban youth have been particularly affected by this transformation. The failure of urban school districts and the lack of jobs, health services and effective prevention and intervention programs have placed large numbers of low-income urban youth at risk. In the absence of policies and institutions that respond to the needs of youth, a climate of fear focused particularly on responding to fears of youth crime has also shaped a national consciousness about urban communities and the youth within them.
Urban Youth and Community Change brings together work by leading scholars who study urban youth and who have a grounded knowledge of the issues they face. A commitment to social justice and equity is a unifying theme for this volume, and each of the authors examines to varying degrees how such values and commitments can be incorporated into public policy. The goal of this edited volume is to draw on the knowledge and expertise of these scholars from various academic disciplines and to share with policymakers and the general public insights into the impact of punitive/zero tolerance policies on young people's educational experience and well being. These chapters also offer new ideas about how to support youth placed at risk by deteriorating circumstances in urban areas and offers recommendations on how to create more humane and responsive youth policies at the local, state and federal level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Broad, poignant and challenging
For youth workers with a preconceived notion about the roles of young people in society, this collection may be challenging. For teachers who think they know the power of students, Ginwright may be shocking. For young people who think they understanding "the movement", this book may be eye-opening. Ginwright collects dozens of the best examples of youth-led and youth-driven activism and refines them to their finest points, charging the reader to do more than complain about apathy or revel in cynicism. He leaves us no choice other than getting up to do something. Thanks Shawn - we need that. This book is an incredible read for anyone interested in the movement at any level. Book Description

This new collection edited by Anita Harris provides an interdisciplinary examination of young womens multilayered lives. Contributors from fields such as education, gender and cultural studies, sociology, psychology and politics - as well as young women themselves - wrestle with both subculture theory and feminism as they attempt to understand contemporary strategies for connection and social action. They also offer insights into an understanding of how todays young women conceive of their relationships and networks with other young women in the absence of older style feminist frameworks; and what their experiences can offer for the development of more relevant explanations of youths' social and political identities and cultures. The book is organised into four sections and the chapters that make up these sections explore the ways in which girls' various cultural pursuits are tied to identity formation and also relate to issues of class, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, ability, and, of course, gender.

Book Description
This book brings together an international collection of essays that describes the state of community participation among the world's youth. Authors from around the globe use fresh empirical data to present portraits of contemporary youths constructing their civic identities through such means as community service and political activism. The image of "Generation X" as socially disconnected and apathetic is contradicted by young people's efforts to comprehend the complexities of society and to work toward the realization of social-moral ideals. The findings in this volume contribute to a theory of political socialization that bases youth's understanding of political aspects of society and citizenship on participation in community and civic activities, rather than on the intake of abstract pieces of formal information. To this end, youth seek to resolve ideological tensions, such as in Northern Ireland and the Middle East; to overcome corrupting political practices, such as in Italy and Taiwan; to deal with disillusionment, such as in the emerging Eastern European nations; and to bridge barriers against youth's meaningful participation in the working of society, such as in Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.Researchers in a wide array of fields, including psychology, sociology, political science, and education will find this book to be a valuable resource. ... German Youth Groups

Walter Z. Laqueur accomplished an important task in his book, Young Germany: A History of the German Youth Movement. This book, written in 1962, was the first to examine the German youth movements in the first half of the 20th century.Laqueur is a prolific writer, authored dozens of books, and has held faculty positions at numerous prestigious institutions.Laqueur has written on a range of subjects from the Middle East and Russia to his native Germany.Rarely does Laqueur fall short of his mark, he was in prime form for this book as well. His meticulous research goes the distance and provides insight for the reader with thought provoking analysis that is seldom less than thorough.
Laqueur grew up in Germany after the advent and pinnacle of the German youth movements. But through intricate detail and appropriate research Laqueur has accomplished the formidable task of mapping the German youth movement throughout the first half of the 20th century.Possibly the most outstanding characteristic of this book is the succinct, yet concise last pages of each chapter.Laqueur places events in their proper context to reiterate the objectives of each chapter, highlighting key points and contrasting specific youth movements. From simply reading the last one or two pages in each chapter one could learn a great deal about the German youth movement.
The German youth movement was never overbearing; peaking in membership at just fewer than 60,000 youngsters during its prime. The youth groups were not exclusive to any socio-economic class, but there was little diversity. Many of these organizations played a prominent role in cultivating German nationalism, fomenting a sense of community that was not always readily available, and creating a distinctly German middle-class identity. This last attribute was more of a byproduct than a tenet. The youth movements, "came into being as, and remained, an exclusively middle-class phenomenon (12)," which impeded its goal of "deepening the community of the people."
Laqueur spares few details in discussing the Wandervogel youth movement. This movement stressed a connection with nature through excursions into the wilderness of Germany, a revival of folk music, and a simplified philosophy of life. The youth movements gained popularity through charismatic leaders. There was no philosophical, political, or cultural bend to any of the groups. The groups thrived exactly because of this lack of specificity. They were universal, allowing people of any race, creed, or religion; there were debates over the Jews and women, but there were women youth movements and for some time Jews were allowed to participate in many of the German youth movements. The ensuing proliferation of youth movements is a credit to these factors, but also because of the autonomy of each group. Despite the political apathy of most youth movement groups, individuals were supposed to become more realized, independent individuals.
Laqueur recapitulates the reason why youth movements were successful in building their base,
"They (students) certainly felt some deep disquiet about the society in which they found themselves-the society of Wilhelmian Germany at the dawn of the century. They were depressed by its conventions, its artificiality and materialism; they felt an absence of human warmth and sincerity; and it was in response to these conditions that their groups were formed, and developed into social centers where they could find the qualities of life to which they aspired. (232)"
These same qualities that made the youth movement so enticing never realized their full potential. The discomfort with "artificiality and materialism" was often substituted by a romanticized view of the past; exploration of the present environment to affirm the individual was sacrificed to history past, and identification with the group hindered the maturity of many youth group members.Youth groups shaped the experiences of youths; even though they were not intellectual (in fact, many were anti-intellectual) the experiences of being out in nature, comradeship with other middle-class youngsters, and shared memories structured relationships and community.
The only place where Laqueur misses the mark is in the discussion of youth groups after 1933.Leading up to WWI and then WWII there is extensive citations and details on the functioning of the groups, but his study of post-1933 leaves something to be desired. It seems like another writer, the thoughts are disconnected, points not emphasized, and at times it appears that there are caesuras in the manuscript. Laqueur does an adequate job of explaining the circumstances that allowed the proliferation of the German youth movement. He explains the lacunae that the youth groups fulfilled in middle-class youths lives, the shortcomings of the generic youth movement, and details the popularity of more prominent youth groups that garnered attention during the first half of the 20th century.Anyone curious about the middle-class youths life in Germany prior to WWI up until the 1950s must read this book. ... Book Description
Youth, Identity, Power is a unique exploration of the origins and development of Chicano radicalism in America. Carlos Muñoz, Jr, himself a leader of the Chicano movement of the 1960s, places the movement in the wider context of the political development of Mexicans and their descendants in the US. Fully revised and updated throughout, Youth, Identity, Power fills a significant gap in the history of political protest in the United States, and makes a major contribution to the history of the cultural development of the Chicano population as a whole. ... Book Description

How did a self-centered "me generation" engage in a student movement that developed into the largest urban protest in modern Chinese history? Searching for Life's Meaning explores the profound changes in the beliefs and values of Chinese youth that occurred during the 1980s and that ultimately led to the confrontation in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Drawing on his own experience as a teacher at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China during the 1980s, as well as exhaustive research, Luo Xu investigates the social and political climate of 1980s China in order to help better define the culture that ultimately drove the events at Tiananmen. Supporting his arguments with solid primary source documents, Xu contends that the contemplation of the meaning of life, along with other philosophical questions, were integral components of the general social crisis leading up to the movement of 1989.
Elegantly written and accessible to a general readership, this study will also be useful to specialists. Searching for Life's Meaning is a concise but detailed introduction to the mentalities of the Chinese generation presently assuming leadership in China. It should be valuable reading in courses on Chinese history and politics, and will be of interest to scholars in the related fields of Asian studies, anthropology, cultural studies, and youth studies. The book will also appeal to business- people and other professionals concerned with managing relations with the world's fastest growing polity.
Luo Xu is Assistant Professor of History, State University of New York College at Cortland.

Book Description
The essayists whose work is collected here-historians, anthropologists, and political scientists-bring their diverse disciplinary perspectives to bear on various forms of violence that have plagued recent African history. Exploring violence as part of political economy and rejecting stereotypical explanations of African violence as endemic or natural to African cultures, the essays examine a continent where the boundaries on acceptable force are always shifting and the distinction between violence by the state and against the state is not always clear.

Many of the essays address generational tensions through the role of African youth, which in this context is almost exclusively male. The violence perpetrated by young men stems not only from ideologies of masculinity but also from a frustration over both their own unrealized adulthood and the failure of an adult leadership whose interaction with the youth often seems limited to enlisting them in more bloodshed. Other essays examine the temptation in an atmosphere of violence to exploit the malleability of memory to construct, or reconstruct, histories in order to justify the sacrifice and shifts of power brought on by that violence.

Wide-ranging but sharply focused, States of Violence takes in power struggles in Sierra Leone, nationalism in postcolonial Zimbabwe, the Bakassi boys of Nigeria, and offers probing examinations of such pivotal events as the Rwandan genocide and the Alexandra Rebellion, shedding new light on the role of each in the drama being played out in this troubled continent.

Book Description

The phrases “hip hop” and “activism” aren’t always heard together, but it’s a marriage that must be made if black empowerment is to succeed. In Stand and Deliver, Bynoe eloquently advocates replacing charismatic but ineffectual black leaders who beg for crumbs from the white power structure with “citizen-leaders” who actively engage in a policy-centered relationship with that structure. Bynoe shows how hip hoppers can create a more sophisticated dialogue about what constitutes leadership, politics, and political action. This understanding, she argues, comes from influence, and influence comes from the ability to deliver — or deny — money, votes, or both to a political candidate, legislator, or political party. In the words of MC Lyte, all the rest is “chitter chatter.”

5-0 out of 5 stars Hip Hop vs. Old School?
It is probably obvious to any thinking Black American that the movement toward an equitable society is lacking in leadership today. The old school civil rights leaders are not connecting with the Hip Hop generation and the Hip Hop generation does not relate to where the civil rights leaders from the sixties and seventies are coming from. Yvonne Bynoe explores the reasons for this disconnect in the Black community. Her book, STAND AND DELIVER, is rich with the history of the civil rights era and also delves deeply into the psyche of the Hip Hop generation. She is equitable in placing responsibility for shortcomings from both generations where they belong and gives credit where it should be given. Bynoe thoughtfully explores the history and the reasoning behind each generation and gives reasonable explanations about why people do the things they do.

What makes her book an outstanding read is that she doesn't just ask the questions; she also provides reasonable solutions and outlines exactly how activism can once more be a part of the Black community. She gives concrete suggestions for the questions the Hip Hop generation must ask, such as how do we make America an equitable society. She even gives information on how to disagree without destroying a movement. In addition, she reminds those from other generations that they must come to the Hip Hop generation as equals, not with a snobbish attitude that suggests that they know without a shadow of a doubt, how to solve the problem of inequality in America. Bynoe also reminds us that in the new century, we can no longer exclude people from the movement because of race, class, or economic condition but we must find a common ground to insure that all Americans have an equal chance to be the best that they can. I frequently found myself nodding in agreement as I read her words. She is a voice to be reckoned with.

This is an excellent and timely book! Ms. Bynoe provides new and important insights about how we should critique and engage political leaders and activists. She is truly an independent thinker who is more interested in people improving their communities than in them propping up ineffectual Black leaders, young or old----based on out-dated rules about party or race unity. Her thoughts about Hip Hop activism are on the money. It is time that the Hip Hop generation move beyond the rhetoric of political activism to actually implementing the tried and true, long-term organizing and mobilizing strategies that actually helped us to make progress years ago. Registration drives without plans to get folks to the polls are not effective!People who talk about problems but who have no solid plans to solve them are irrelevant! Read "Stand and Deliver," Yvonne Bynoe is definitely a new and important voice that we should pay heed to. ... Read more
