Product Description
Although much has been written about cases of children as soldiers and slaves in recent conflicts, these cases are but one example of the impact of conflict on a subset of the youth population. In Youth and Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Agents of Change, Stephanie Schwartz goes beyond these highly publicized cases and examines the roles of the broader youth population in post-conflict scenarios, taking on the complex task of distinguishing between the legal and societal labels of child, youth, and adult. In the post-conflict population, youth constitute a reservoir brimming with potential energy, ready to be channeled for good or ill. What causes some young people to return to the life of a fighter while others choose to work for a better future? And what can domestic and international actors do to help youth move toward an education, work to support their families, and become active contributors to building peace and reconstructing their countries?Youth in Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Agents of Change uses three cases of post-conflict reconstruction Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kosovo to explore how youth affect the post-conflict reconstruction process, and how domestic policy, NGO programming, international interventions, and cultural contexts may change that role. The hypotheses drawn from these comparisons will be useful both in guiding future research on youth s role in post-conflict reconstruction and in helping reconstruction actors facilitate the youth population s transition from war to peace. ... Product Description

Over the past decade, our understanding of the fundamental differences in child development, behavior, and emotional maturity between boys and girls has increased dramatically, and as a result, many gender-specific interventions and support programs have been developed to meet the needs of parents, teachers, and mental health professionals.  However, these all take the form of responses designed to minimize an already disruptive behavior pattern.  What has been needed is a pro-active program whose goal is to instill positive skills and patterns in 'at-risk' boys, rather than waiting to address problems after they are already visible.

The BAM! Boys Advocacy and Mentoring program fills this need by providing the first guidebook for group facilitators who want to lead preventative boys groups designed to foster communication skills and emotional connections.  Based on years of research and refined over the course of countless sessions run by the authors, the program has been field-tested and tailored for use either in the school setting or outside.  Over a series of group sessions, participants are encouraged to understand their emotions and interpersonal interactions without losing a sense of 'maleness' as a result of emotional growth and communication with peers about personal issues.  The activities are designed to be engaging across age groups, and the individual exercises and program structure can be modified to fit into any existing school- or community-based mentoring system.  The guidebook contains all of the information and tools a facilitator needs in order to implement and maintain these boys groups.

Product Description
The goal of this book is to encourage educators and researchers to understand the complexities of adolescent gang members' lives in order to rethink their assumptions about these students in school. The particular objective is to situate four gang members as literate, caring students from loving families whose identities and literacy keep them on the margins of school. The research described in this book suggests that advocacy is a particularly effective form of critical ethnography. Smith and Whitmore argue that until schools, as communities of practice, enable children and adolescents to retain identities from the communities in which they are full community members, frightening numbers of students are destined to fail.

The stories of four Mexican American male adolescents, who were active members of a gang and Smith's students in an alternative high school program, portray the complicated, multiple worlds in which these boys live. As sons and teenage parents they live in a family community; as CRIP members they live in a gang community; as "at risk" students, drop-outs, and graduates they live in a school community, and as a result of their illegal activities they live in the juvenile court community. The authors theorize about the boys' literacy in each of their communities. Literacy is viewed as ideological, related to power, and embedded in a sociocultural context. Vivid examples of conversation, art, tagging, rap, poetry, and other language and literacy events bring the narratives to life in figures and photographs in all the chapters. Readers will find this book engaging and readable, yet thought provoking and challenging.

Audiences for Literacy and Advocacy in Adolescent Family, Gang, School, and Juvenile Count Communities include education researchers, professionals, and students in the areas of middle/high school education, at-risk adolescent psychology, and alternative community programsâ€"specifically those interested in literacy education, sociocultural theory, and popular culture. ... Product Description
The Battle for Children links two major areas of historical inquiry: crime and delinquency with war and social change. In a study based on impressive archival research, Sarah Fishman reveals the impact of the Vichy regime on one of history's most silent groups--children--and offers enlightening new information about the Vichy administration.Fishman examines how French children experienced the events of war and the German occupation, demonstrating that economic deprivation, not family dislocation, drove up juvenile crime rates. Wartime circumstances led authorities to view delinquent minors as victims, and provided the opportunity for reformers in psychiatry, social work, and law to transform France's punitive juvenile justice system into a profoundly therapeutic one. Vichy-era legislation thus formed the foundation of the modern juvenile justice system in France, which rarely incarcerates delinquent youth. In her examination of the critical but unexpected role the war and the authoritarian Vichy regime played in the transformation of France's juvenile courts and institutions, Fishman has enriched our knowledge of daily life in France during World War II, refined our understanding of Vichy's place in the historical development of France, and provided valuable insights into contemporary debates on juvenile justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening and enjoyable to read
Some comparative legal studies can be overly descriptive and dry, but Fishman views the French juvenile justice system through the lens of recent history and her book is a pleasure to read. She traces the French approach to youth crime policy and its origins, and in doing so she helps American readers to see our own system a little more clearly. ... Read more

Product Description
Unemployment levels are on the rise nearly everywhere, and the rate is particularly high among young people. If this trend is not reversed, the potential long-term economic and social damage is incalculable. For this reason a particular urgency attended an international conference on the subject held in March 2009 at the Marco Biagi Foundation in Modena, Italy, in the course of which specialists in labour law, human resources management, labour economics, sociology, education, and statistics met to present and compare research. This issue of the Bulletin of Comparative Labour Relations includes a selection of the papers presented at that conference. Although the selected essays present findings on specific issues in particular countries, the general applicability at the global level is evident. Assessing measures taken to deal with youth unemployment in thirteen countries (Italy, Spain, Russia, Sweden, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Israel, Nigeria, the United States, China, and Singapore), twenty-five leading authorities describe and analyse such aspects of the problem as the following: vocational education and training; quality of employment as well as quantity; links between educational institutions and local, national and international enterprises; consultation and co-operation between employers' associations and trade unions; job security vs. employment security; funding for postgraduate programmes, internships, and on-the-job vocational training; career development for future managers; safeguards for workers in a framework of flexibility; labour market pressure from unskilled immigrant workers; 'earn-as-you-learn' schemes; work in the informal economy; and the rationale behind the phasing out of passive labour market measures for school leavers such as unemployment benefit. Admirably fulfilling the need for a critical analysis of today's increasing rate of youth unemployment with a comparative and interdisciplinary approach - and highlighting in particular the growing mismatch between the expectations of graduates and what the labour market is actually able to deliver - the research papers in this volume provide invaluable indicators for labour lawyers, educators, and policymakers seeking to address this issue in their specific regional and national contexts. ... Excerpt: The Young Communist League of Canada (YCL-LJC) is a Marxist-Leninist youth organization which fights to build a powerful youth and student movement across Canada and for socialism. According to their website, We are a multi-ethnic organization of youth, workers, women and men. We support democratic mass movements and struggles for peace, against racism, sexism, homophobia, national oppression, and environmental degradation. We work in our unions and workplaces for better wages and work conditions, and in our schools for democratic education, accessible to all. The Young Communist League of Canada was founded at a convention in Toronto in 1923 as the youth wing of the Communist Party of Canada. Since that time the YCL has been active to various degrees, in international solidarity as well as young workers and students rights. The YCL was founded in 1923 as the Young Workers League. Leslie Morris was its first General Secretary, from 1923 to 1924. It soon became a member of the Young Communist International, part of numerous YCLs around the world, the most notable being the Komsomol in the USSR upon which all other Young Communist Leagues became modeled. Despite conditions of illegality, the YCL grew in the 1920s. The League was founded as the Young Workers League because of the War Measures Act banning Communist and other radical organizations in Canada. In the words of one its early organizers, Dave Kashtan, the YCL "served as an educational organization for young workers and students, educating young p...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1754112 ...
