Editorial Review

Book Description
An inquiry into the causes and nature of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. "The essays in Neighbors at Warpresent an important combination of social history and on-the-ground local investigation. By deconstructing the popular phrase 'age-old ethnic hatreds,' the book successfully challenges the concept as a cause of the war and, instead, analyzes it as an ideological tool in the war." —Carol Silverman, University of Oregon

Before former Yugoslavia was divided by wars, and despite a complex history of previous conflict, its diverse ethnic inhabitants lived side by side and regularly cooperated in daily life. This collection seeks to explain how former neighbors became enemies, with the hope that understanding what drove these peoples apart will help us discover ways for them to again coexist in peace.

Contributors analyze political cartoons, the arts, and visual media, and employ psychiatric, legal, historic, and biographic approaches to provide understandings of the conflicts in Yugoslavia. Though many of the chapters deal with specific regional events and processes, they are less focused on politics than on how values and attitudes are altered and new identities formed. Thus, the volume considers questions sparsely covered in recent publications, goes beyond typical journalistic accounts, and should remain relevant for years to come.

This book originated as a special issue of the Anthropology of East Europe Review. Most contributors to that issue revised their chapters for this collection, and new chapters have been added. Essays range across all of former Yugoslavia, emphasizing the variability and diversity of ethnic relations throughout recent history.

Contributors are from the Balkans and Western Europe as well as North America. The collection is sharpened as some contributors take expressly partisan perspectives. However, the debate is framed in order to encourage mutual understanding through cross-cultural analysis.

Book Description

Disintegration in Frames examines the ways in which national identity and interethnic relations are approached, evaluated, and critically dissected in films by directors such as Dušan Makavejev, Emir Kusturica, and Srdan Dragojevic; subcultural television and musical performances of the Bosnian pop-art movement New Primitivism; amateur video works made by the returning veterans of the Croatian war; political documentaries chronicling the psychological effects of state socialism; and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars much needed analysis of Yugoslav and post-Yu cinema
Disintegration in Frames is theoretically insightful, but never too dense to be inaccessible to general readership. The book is a great resource for anyone interested in the role of cinema in the formation of Yugoslav ethno-nationalisms (and cinema as a reflection of these ethno-nationalisms). The book is full of fun insights, such as the discussion of phallic connotations of the Yugoslav ritual of carrying "the baton of youth," and the reference to such pan-Yugoslav rituals in the work of New Primitivs in late 1980s and early 1990s: "sucking of the pole". The chapter on Yugoslav "black wave" is extremely insightful for anyone interested in the works of such masters as Dusan Makavejev, Zelimir Zilnik and Karpo Godina. Levi's critique of Emir Kusturica's work sets high standards for future scholarship on this director's work. Highly recommended. ... Read more

From the supplier: The Belgrade International Film Festival (FEST), which began in the 1970s, is famous for exhibiting good movies. Two of its aims are to promote American and European films in Yugoslavia and to aid young filmmakers from the former Yugoslavia to show their works. Although the FEST had to be closed for two years due to the civil war, it was revived in 1995 to join in the global celebration of cinema's first hundred years. Festival guests in the 1996 celebration were treated with an informative filmography called 'Yugoslav Films: Culture of the Impossible: 1994-95, Including 1991-93.'

From the supplier: Danilo Kis believes that technique is a major component of his writing and dreads the prospect of repeating himself technically. One reason for the gap between his works is his need to find and master a new technique after each one. Kis has come to think that politics and literature cannot mix well despite his strong feelings about Yugoslavian political issues. His 'Chagrins precoces;' 'Garden, Ashes;' and 'Hourglass' form an ensemble that explore Kis' familial and personal history as a Hungarian Jew. Kis acknowledges James Joyce's influence and is very interested in the debate pitting ethics against aesthetics.
