Book Description
While the Klondike Gold Rush is one of the most widely known events in Canadian history, particularly outside Canada, the rest of the Yukon's long and diverse history attracts little attention. Important developments such as Herschel Island whaling, pre-1900 fur trading, the post-World War II resource boom, a lengthy struggle for responsible government, and the emergence of Aboriginal political protest remain poorly understood.

Placing well-known historical episodes within the broader sweep of the past, Land of the Midnight Sun gives particular emphasis to the role of First Nations people and the lengthy struggle of Yukoners to find their place within Confederation. This broader story incorporates the introduction of mammoth dredges that scoured the Klondike creeks, the impressive Elsa-Keno Hill silver mines, the impact of residential schools on Aboriginal children, the devastation caused by the sinking of the Princess Sophia, the Yukon's remarkable contributions to the national World War I effort, and the sweeping transformations associated with the American occupation during World War II.

Completely revised with a new epilogue, the bestselling Land of the Midnight Sun was first published in 1988 and became the standard source for understanding the history of the Yukon. Ken Coates and William Morrison have published ten books together, including Strange Things Done: A History of Murder in the Yukon and the forthcoming Trailmarkers: A History of Landmark Aboriginal Rights Cases in Canada. Land of the Midnight Sun was their first collaboration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Academic history
Both Coates and Morrison are well known inside Canadian academic circles for their work on Northern history (Land of the Midnight Sun; Taking the North Down With Her). This work builds on those previous contributions.'Strange Things Done' is easy to read, and is not just a work for other academics. In fact, this book belongs both in the 'True Crime' and the 'History' sections of book stores.
Murder is a fascinating topic, and this book is put together in such a way that the reader becomes aquainted with Yukon history through intriguing stories and flowing narrative. One does not have to be an expert in Northern History to enjoy this book - I certainly am not.I enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it to anyone interested in histories of Canada, the North, or even murder in general. ... Book Description
"Woven around a detailed, frequently humorous narrative of the successes and failures of the author and his partner, the book offers insights into Klondike life ranging from practical advice on the techniques of cabin and boat building to observations on the virulence of mosquitoes, tent care, the quality of Klondike 'restaurants,' and the wisdom of justice dispensed by Alaskan miners' meetings." —Polar Record

"This prose carries tremendous clarity and the unstilted writing style of a pro." —Bloomsbury Review

Book Description
In 1896 gold was discovered in British Columbia on Rabbit Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River. Newspapers trumpeted the discovery around the world. People from far and wide heeded this call and planned expeditions to the icy fields of the far north. Business owners in Seattle and elsewhere recognized gold's discovery as an opportunity to profit from the hordes of wide-eyed miners heading north. They hoped to supply erstwhile miners with the myriad goods and services they required--food, clothing, medicine, tools, machinery, boats, and pack animals.

However, Seattle wasnít alone in recognizing this economic opportunity and competed with San Francisco, Portland, Tacoma, and Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, to become outfitters for Klondike-bound miners. Seattle businessmen organized to win the miners' attention--and their ready cash--which would ensure that Seattle grew into an influential West Coast city.

Historian Lisa Mighetto captures the unique character of Seattle at the turn of the 19th century. Her engaging prose illuminates this in-depth study of the economics and culture of the time. Mighetto incorporates important background history of Seattle and its settlement and growth prior to the gold rush. Her storytelling skills capture the character of this robust city and its fragile class structure, a mixture of dry goods empires, saw mill kings, politicians, stalwart citizens, and the occasional ne'er-do-well.

Mighetto has gathered newspaper advertisements designed to attract the neophyte miners. An outstanding selection of historical photos and an array of informational graphics detail Seattleís growth as an important trade and business center. ... Read more
