Product Description
Reshaping Economic Geography in East Asia, a companion volume to the World Development Report 2009, brings together noted scholars to address the spatial distribution of economic growth in Asia. It reveals how the new economic geography is reshaping development objectives: from initiatives to foster growth via enhanced agglomeration and connectivity to the world economy, to programs that channel resources to lagging regions. Key themes include how East Asian governments have dealt with agglomeration economies, urbanization, and regional disparities; improving connectivity with infrastructure investments; and eliminating barriers both inside and outside borders to favor the movement of labor, goods, and services. This volume will be of great interest to readers working in the areas of economic policy, poverty reduction and urban-rural development strategies, and transport-led infrastructure policy. ... Product Description
The Yukon is in the northwestern corner of Canada. The sparsely populated territory abounds with natural scenic beauty, with snowmelt lakes and perennial whitecapped mountains, including many of Canada's highest mountains. Although the climate is arctic and subarctic and very dry, with long cold winters, the long sunshine hours in the short summer allow a profusion of flowers and fruit to blossom. Most of the territory is boreal forest, tundra being the main vegetation zone only in the extreme north and at high elevations. The world's largest non-polar icefield, the Kluane icefields is mostly in the Yukon. The territory is about the shape of a right triangle, bordering the American state of Alaska to the west, the Northwest Territories to the east and British Columbia to the south. The Yukon covers 482,443 square kilometres, of which 474,391 km² is land and 8,052 km² is water. It is bounded on the south by the 60th parallel of latitude. Its northern coast is on the Beaufort Sea. Its western boundary is 141 degrees west longitude. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Wolf Lake (also known as Gooch Aa) is located in Yukon, Canada near Teslin. The lake is surrounded by tundra and wooded lowlands and mountains. The lake is also commonly fished for its lake trout. In 1998 Parks Canada, the Teslin Tlingit Council, and the Teslin Renewable Resources Council held a discussion about a feasibility study for a national park in the area. Later in 1998 the Yukon government issued the Protected Areas Strategy including Wolf Lake as a protected area. The Yukon Bureau of Statistics took a survey in the area to find the views of the community of the plan for a national park, at the request of the Teslin Renewable Resources Council. They found the plan for a national park had strong support but some disapproval as some feared the park would interfere with tradition. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve is located in east central Alaska along the border with Canada. It encompasses 115 miles (185 km) of the 1,800-mile (3,000 km) Yukon River and the entire Charley River basin. Numerous rustic cabins and historic sites are located in the preserve. These are reminders of the importance of the Yukon River during the Klondike Gold Rush. Paleontological and archeological sites here add much to our knowledge of this environment thousands of years ago. Peregrine falcons nest in the high bluffs overlooking the river, while the rolling hills that make up the preserve are home to an abundant array of wildlife. Dominant trees are the Black Spruce and White Spruce. This general area of the Yukon catchment is the westernmost limit of the Black Spruce, Picea mariana. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is one of the largest river deltas in the world, roughly the size of Oregon. It is located where the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers empty into the Bering Sea on the west coast of the U.S. state of Alaska. The delta, which mostly consists of tundra, is protected as part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. The delta has approximately 25,000 residents. 85% of these are Alaska Natives, both Yupik Eskimos and Athabaskan Indians. The main population center and service hub is the city of Bethel, with a population of around 6,000. Bethel is surrounded by 49 smaller villages, with the largest villages consisting of over 1,000 people. Most residents live a traditional subsistence lifestyle of hunting, fishing, and gathering, and over 30 percent have cash incomes well below the federal poverty threshold. The area has virtually no roads; travel is by Bush plane, or by river boats in summer and snowmachines in winter. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon Flats are a vast area of wetlands, forest, bog, and low-lying ground centered on the confluence of the Yukon River, Porcupine River, and Chandalar River in the central portion of the U.S. state of Alaska. The Yukon Flats are bordered in the north by the Brooks Range, in the south by the White Mountains, and cover an area of approximately 11,000 square miles (28,490 km2). The Yukon Flats are a critical waterfowl breeding ground due to the large area of wetland provided by the estimated 40,000 small lakes and streams in the area. In recognition of this fact, the area is protected under the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge. The Yukon Flats straddle the Arctic Circle and have an extremely variable climate. Temperatures of 95 F (35°C) are not uncommon in summer, while winter temperatures have been known to drop to -70 F (-57°C). ... Read more
