Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon Party is a conservative political party in the Yukon Territory of Canada. It was previously known as the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party. In French (an official language in the territory), it is known as the Parti du Yukon. The Progressive Conservatives were defeated in the 1985 election by the Yukon New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Tony Penikett. With Brian Mulroney's federal Progressive Conservative government's increasing unpopularity, the Yukon Progressive Conservatives decided to sever their relations with the federal Tory party, and renamed themselves the "Yukon Party" prior to the 1992 election. However, two Progressive Conservative MLAs, Bea Firth and Alan Nordling, quit the party in protest and subsequently sat as independent MLAs until 1996. Nordling later returned to the fold, being defeated as a Yukon Party candidate in the 1996 election, while Firth retired from politics. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon Legislative Assembly is the legislative assembly for Yukon, Canada. It is located in Whitehorse. From 1900 to 1978, the elected legislative body in the Yukon was the Yukon Territorial Council, a ten-member body which did not act as the primary government, but was a non-partisan advisory body to the Commissioner of the Yukon. Following the passage of the Yukon Elections Act in 1977, the Territorial Council was replaced by the current Legislative Assembly, which was elected for the first time in the 1978 election. The Yukon Legislative Assembly is the only legislature in Canada's territories which is organized along political party lines. In Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, the legislative assemblies are instead elected on a non-partisan consensus government model. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon Territorial Council was the first sitting of the Yukon Legislative Assembly. The Council began with the appointment of its first members on July 8, 1898 and was dissolved in June of 1909. Appointments to the Council were chosen by the Government of Canada. The Council would exist through four general elections. The first election held on October 18, 1900 elected two members at large. The council would divide the territory into districts for the second general election held on January 13, 1903. Two more general elections would follow before the council was entirely dissolved. Appointed members during this period did not have to be reappointed, only seats to elected members were dissolved. The elections were called by the Yukon Commissioner, while electoral district boundaries were controlled by an act of legislation from the council. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yukon Liberal Party is a political party in the Yukon Territory in Canada. The party was created in the early 1900's during the gold rush. After twenty years as a minor party, the Yukon Liberal Party won the 2000 general election and formed a government under Premier Pat Duncan. The government was plagued with defections, however, and was reduced to minority government status. Duncan called a snap election for November 2002 in the hope of regaining her government's majority. The party was almost completely wiped out, however, by the Yukon Party. Duncan won the Liberals' sole seat in the Yukon Party's landslide. Arthur Mitchell is the Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1978 Yukon general election, held on November 20, 1978, was the first conventional legislative election in the history of Canada's Yukon Territory. Prior elections were held to elect representatives to the Yukon Legislative Council, a non-partisan body that acted in an advisory role to the Commissioner of the Yukon. Following the passage of the Yukon Elections Act in 1977, the 1978 election was the first time that voters in the Yukon elected representatives to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in an election organized along political party lines. Hilda Watson, the first woman ever to lead a political party into an election in Canada, was the leader of the Progressive Conservatives. Although the party won the election, Watson herself was defeated in Kluane by Liberal candidate Alice McGuire, and thus did not become government leader. The position of government leader instead went to Chris Pearson. ... Read more
