5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great book
This has been one of my favorite books for years. It is very thorough, yet interesting, and covers the subjects without leaning too heavily on the anthropological. It includes modern as well as pre-history, oral historyand stories, early drawings and color photographs. It is just a wonderful, respectful and human book. There is nothing else quite like it either inthe Yukon or in Alaska. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This completely revised edition of Land of the Midnight Sun, first published in 1988, is a comprehensive overview of Yukon history. This book places the Klondike Gold Rush within the broader sweep of the past, giving particular emphasis to the role of First Nations people and Aboriginal-white relations and to the lengthy struggle of Yukoners to find their place in the Canadian confederation. This broader story incorporates the mammoth dredges that scoured the Klondike creeks, the impressive silver mines in the Elsa-Keno Hill area, the sinking of the Princess Sophia, the Yukon's remarkable contributions to the war effort in World War I, and the sweeping transformations associated with the American "occupation" during World War II.

"Sudden miracles, quick turns of fortune, and deeds of endurance and courage and of mind-numbing folly have characterized most of the less-celebrated periods of the Yukon's past. In their carefully researched and well-written Land of the Midnight Sun, Ken Coates and William Morrison have managed to salvage most of the story."--The Globe and Mail ... Read more

Book Description
A northern author looks at the challenges faced by the Mounties in Canada's Yukon Territory over the last 100 years, from their arrival on the eve of the world-famous Klondike Gold Rush, to the present.

Through vivid photos, careful research and use of personal diaries and correspondence, Helene Dobrowolsky shows the reality of Mounted Police history to be even more intriguing than the fiction of Hollywood's Sergeant Preston. It's a history made richer still by the women and First Nations people who contributed to the success of the force in this vast land. And then there are dog stories, lots of them, some hilarious, some tragic. ... Read more

Book Description
Canadians have always been fascinated by the North. Celebrated in song, story and motion picture, it has contributed such icons of the public consciousness as the Klondike Gold Rush, the doomed Franklin expedition, the outlaw Dan McGrew and the lady that's known as Lou, the Mad Trapper of Rat River, the Mountie who always gets his man, and the heroic Inuit hunter.True North looks at all aspects of the region, to provide an accurate account of its past. For many readers the most fascinating chapters will be those on the exploration of the region, featuring Eric the Red, Cabot, Frobisher, Baffin, Mackenzie, Franklin, Amundsen and many more. With the explorers came the fur trade, and the hardships involved in moving goods from England to the Canadian arctic: "...the average time from the day that a copper kettle left the company's warehouse in London until the beaver pelt that paid for it arrived was an astonishing seven years. The feat was analogous to trading with Mars." Here also is the real story of the Klondike Gold Rush--almost as melodramatic as the Holywood version. The book's final chapters deal with recent history and modern concerns: the militarization of the region, with developments such as the DEW line: and its exploitation by business interests. At the centre of the book, of course, are the Inuit and Dene. Their history is constantly present, in discussions of their early contact with European exploreres, their treatment in missionary-run government schools, relations with the mining settlements, fur traders and whalers, the diseases brought to the North by the builders of the Alaska Highway, and the administration of government policy on the north and native peoples. The book's closing chapter,"Search for the Future", discusses in detail several topics of particular importance to the First Nations, such as the proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline, the devolution of political power, land claims negotiations, and preparations for the creation of a third territory.Throughout, carefully chosen photographs illustrate all facets of this fascinating region: landscapes, glaciers, and waterfalls; towns, bridges and buildings; ships and dogsleds, explorers and Mounties; historical native costumes and activities; even a frozen mastodon head. The result is a lucid, accessible and stunningly illustrated introduction to the Canadian north. ... Read more

Book Description

This sixth volume in the Osgoode Society's distinguished series on the history of Canadian law turns to the a central theme in the history of British Columbia and the Yukon - law and order. In the early days of British sovereignty, the frenzied activity of the fur trade and the gold rush, along with clashes between settlers and Natives, made law enforcement a difficult business. Later, although law and order were more firmly established, tensions continued between the dominant populations committed to the practice and rhetoric of British justice and those groups owing allegiance to other value systems (such as Native peoples,Asian immigrants, and Doukhobors) or those resisting authority (criminals and the criminally insane). These essays look at key social, economic, and political issues of the times and show how they influenced the developing legal system.

The essays cover a wide range of topics, and explore the human as well as the legal dimensions of their subjects, relating specific cases to broader theory. They demonstrate that English law has been flexible enough to accommodate diversity and is, therefore, pragmatic. The volume also proves that there is no single Canadian legal culture: geography, demography, politics, economics, and military considerations have had an impact on the shape of our legal culture. The introduction by John McLaren and Hamar Foster pulls together the many regional themes to provide a clear overview of the legal complexities of the period. ... Read more

Book Description
Furs, gold, whales, oil--the reason for going north has always been to empty the treasure house. The northern territories are vast and sparsely populated, so southern Canadians have been content to consider the North a colony, not a true part of Canada.

Since the first British naval expeditions to the "Frozen North," the history of the region has been romanticised. This book presents that history as seen from the North itself. Ken Coates begins by describing the resilient pre-European cultures of the Dene and Inuit peoples. Chapters are devoted to each period of development--the fur trade, Arctic whaling, the Klondike Gold Rush, military projects like the Alaska Highway, Ottawa's "bureaucratisation" of the North, and the resource projects of recent years.

First published in 1985, this book shows that modern northern politics have deep roots in the true history of "Canada's colonies." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In Quest of Yukon River Steamboat Information
Stan Cohen's "Yukon River Steamboats" book has providedexcellent historical and visual information about the early Steamboats onthe Yukon River, and their environmental history of that time period.

TheArchival Collections of the Mercer County Historical Museum, 130 EastMarket, Box 512, Celina, OH 45822, contains two gold rush diaries and twophotograph albums, with ledgers, claims, and a packet of letters, from agroup of 15 men from Ohio, who went on the gold rush 1898-1900. TheirSteamer was theD. Armstrong, from St. Marys, Ohio. They mention nearlyone hundred different steamboats, in their diaries.

In Cohen's book, henames several of the same steamboats: St. Michael, P.B. Weare,Sybil, Yukon,Susie, Monarch, Alice,Tyrrell, Sarah, Hannah, Oil City, Leah, Louise, andJennie M. Cohen illustrated his books with excellent photographs. On page110, he gave reference to Mr. William D. McBride of Whitehorse, who in1949, compiled a list of boats for "Caribou and NOrthwest Digest"magazine.(Now, I am quest of a copy of that magazine."

This July(2000) I visited Alaska and the Yukon Territory, in quest of informationabout this 1898-1900 gold rush.People in Fairbanks,Wiseman, Anchorage andDawson gave me excellent help. This past year, many Alaskans havecorresponded with me, helping me with my research on the gold rushstory.

Now, I am preparing a manuscript from these Ohioan's gold rushdiaries. They spent the winter of 1898-1899 on the Koyukuk river and itstributaries. They spent the summer of 1899, on the Yukon, near Weare(Tanana). They spent the winter of 1899-1900 on the Chena and itstributaries. They often mention the Jennie M. and the Currier parties, intheir daily diaries. They also mention members of the Str. Argo, Str.Illinois, Str. Kyle, STr. Winthrop, Str. North Star, Str. Luella, et.al.

If anyone would be interested in corresponding with me, about thesediaries of the gold rush, and/or steamboats on the Yukon, I would be gladto hear from them.

I especially recommend Stan Cohen for providing thisbeautiful book.I also enjoy his book, "Klondike CentennialScrapbook, with Candy Waugaman's Collection."

Joyce Alig, DirectorMercer County Historical Museum, The Riley Home 130 East Market, Box 512Celina, OH 45822

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pictorial book.
Fascinating pictorial book about the sternwheelers that plied the lakes and streams of the Yukon River before, during, and after the Klondike Gold Rush.

The sternwheelers played a crucial role in development of theregion and in the gold rush, especially prior to the White Pass and YukonRoute railroad, which was built in 1898-99.The WPYR provided a rail routefrom Skagway to Whitehorse eventually, but it was the connections with thesternwheelers that made the journey of hundreds of miles from Skagway toDawson City much easier.

Eventually, highways and airplanes killed offthe sternwheelers, bringing to an end this romantic era in the north.

This books lets you seem them in their glory days.
