Product Description
This is a collection of work by photographer Britta Jaschinski depicting the condition of animals in zoos and the issues their captivity provokes. The photographs are dark, capturing a fragmentary glance of the animal, whether a paw gripping an iron bar or a dolphin below the surface of a pool.Amazon.com Review
This book is not for children, nor is it likely to be recycledas a calendar or a booklet of postcards. It has, however, establishedits young creator as a talent on the rise in Europe. Jaschinski, aGerman-born photographer based in London, lets her starkblack-and-white compositions stand without commentary; viewers areleft to form their own opinions.Among these dark and unsettlingimages of animals behind bars is a haunting--and nearlyheart-breaking--picture of a decidedly unhappy gibbon, imploring thecamera to free him from captivity. Words could only diminish itsimpact. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars striking images, powerful message
Britta Jachinski's "Zoo" is a startling and moving portrait of our animal friends and the way humankind treats them. Her photographs are at once beautiful and heart-breaking; Britta's sensitivity and insight are boundless. Her message is powerful, and one that she relays with earnesty and great passion. This book inspires me to do better, to live better, and to love better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.
An unforgettable read.
Without a word and thus with incredible strength. It's not a political message, it's not an argument with solutions to problems.
It's just an extremely strong and human message.
A book I wish more people would read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiration
This book rekindled my interest in B&W photography...and since I live near a major zoo, also zoo photography. Not every photo is of the same quality, but in this book are the most singularly beautiful B&W images I have ever seen! The layout and quality are tops. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Now having said that, I must admit I love zoos...and thank heavens for them for keeping alive some of nature's most wonderful creatures which have been suffering terribly in recent years in the wild. The damage done to wildlife conservation by the Sierra Clubs and the PETAs of the world cannot be understated. So, I do not agree with her message but I love her spectacular images.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Yet Sad Book of Captured "Wildlife" Pictures
As youngsters most of us felt excited when we went to zoos to see"wild" animals. This book shows us how things may look like fromthe other side of the cage/barrier.The Images are stunning not only fortheir artistic beauty but also the message they convey: unforgettable yetheart-breaking.The composition and lighting of the black and white printsare just great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating imagery
Never have I seen a collection of photography like this book. The book notonly shows the beauty of all sorts of animals but also depicts theharshness of the reality they face each day living in a zoo. The contrastbetween nature's awesome creatures and man's desire to put them on displayis a haunting story. This photographer tells it well. ... Read more

Product Description
Zoos have found themselves continually under fire in recent decades. Animal rights activists initiated the attacks; at the same time regulatory agencies, anti-tax advocates, and an assortment of litigators have also targeted zoos. In an effort to defend themselves in this hostile landscape, zoos and aquariums joined forces under the leadership of the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (now called the AZA). They learned to use the political system to their own advantage while at the same time crafting a more progressive public mission.

In The Politics of Zoos, Jesse Donahue and Erik Trump present a political biography of the AZA to show how the zoo community has emerged as a political player. Rather than recount the history of a faceless institution, the authors focus on the cohort of directors who navigated the political turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s and set the agenda for subsequent decades. Ironically, at a time when activists began to charge that zoos and aquariums did not know how to care for animals and did not care for the well-being of endangered species, the opposite was true. These institutions were increasingly attracting well-educated professionals who indeed cared a great deal.

Amidst controversies over ownership and funding, capture and disposal, and the health and well-being of animals on display, AZA leaders acted not merely to protect their own interests in the political arena but to ensure the welfare of captive animals and to assist with the conservation of wild species. Donahue and Trump’s original study of the politics of American zoos and aquariums from the 1960s to the present draws upon interviews, archival sources, congressional records, court cases, regulatory hearings, media accounts, and the authors’ ongoing field research. It will appeal to zoo professionals, political scientists, historians, and those concerned with animal welfare. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A one-sided view
This book is a disappointment. I bought it expecting to explore the various perspectives on zoo practices and missions. Instead, I found a tract that could have been written by lobbyists for the AZA. Their utter disdain for other perspectives, and their insulting dismissal of passionate advocates for animal welfare, revealed a lack of intelligent honesty and objectivity.

I am a huge fan of zoos that are committed to educating and motivating the public for animal conservation. They need to engage everyone, including animal advocacy organizations. I hope that this book does not reflect the general thinking of progressive zoos. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and Wonderful!
Although I did not see the television documentary on these two littledarlings, I nevertheless loved the book. Although they are now big bears, the story of little Klondike and Snow's early years is interesting, educational and touching. Abandoned by their mother as cubs, the two bearswere raised by humans. This book clearly illustrates the love and devotionof the Denver Zoo towards the cubs' care and development. Klondike and Snoware now thriving at Sea World's Wild Arctic exhibit, were they have plentyof living space and attention!

This book is wonderful for any animallover and people interested in animal/human interaction.

Product Description
Observing exotic creatures, petting friendly animals, and riding the train through the park - no one can forget the enchanting childhood ritual of visiting the zoo. In reality, zoo visitors experience only the tip of the iceberg - "Animals Always" gives readers a glimpse into the unseen work and overlooked history of the renowned Saint Louis Zoo. Now celebrating its centennial, this expansive campus of naturalistic habitats houses more than 18,000 animals and is rated America's No. 1 zoo by Zagat, the well-known rating agency. Overflowing with stories, photographs, and fascinating sidebars, this captivating volume covers the Zoo's rich history and its emergence as a modern-day center of research and conservation. The Saint Louis Zoo has earned its excellent reputation thanks to its forward thinking and its community support - not to mention familiar faces like Marlin Perkins and Phil the Gorilla. St. Louis was the first city in the world to support its zoo through public taxes, and the Zoo remains free to all visitors today. Mary Delach Leonard takes readers from the days when school-children collected 238,400 pennies to purchase Miss Jim the circus elephant, through years of renovation and innovation, to the twenty-first-century realization of the River's Edge habitat, which elevates the concept of natural displays to a new level, and the WildCare Institute, launched in 2004 to support animal conservation centers around the world. Vintage photographs offer up animal shows and early visitors in period dress, and modern color images capture today's awe-inspiring wild exhibits. Readers are treated to behind-the-scenes anecdotes and statistics visitors are normally not privy to. In 1970, a forty-day citywide search was launched for a spitting cobra that escaped through his enclosure's water drain. Community members sighted the fugitive in a fan belt by the side of a highway, the pulley of a home furnace, and numerous banana peels before the snake was finally found in a crawlspace near his cage. A peek at the current Zoo grocery list reveals a need for 43,056 red delicious apples per year - but also 122,000 mice and 16,750 rats! Through page after page of surprises - pictures never before seen and amazing historical facts - as well as anecdotes sure to stir memories, this delightful volume captures an institution that has always been one step ahead. And Dr. Jeffrey P. Bonner, President and CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo today, gives readers a peek at what's in store for the Zoo in the not-too-distant future. "Animals Always" is a vibrant tribute to the Saint Louis Zoo's innovation, dedication, and long-standing commitment to the people of St. Louis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A template for the celebration of other major zoos and animal sanctuaries elsewhere around the country
Every major city has its zoo. Collections of animals both common and exotic, displayed for their educational and recreational value to the general public. Some zoos are also involved in environmental issues including the preservation of species. One of the country's premier zoos is that of Saint Louis, Missouri, now celebrating its centennial anniversary. This complex and popular zoo is fully showcased in "Animals Always: 100 Years At The Saint Louis Zoo" by St. Louis journalist Mary Delach Leonard. An impressively informed and informative compilation of anecdotal stories, beautiful photography both vintage and contemporary, fact-laden side bars, and more, "Animals Always" is a celebration of this public funded, fully modern and modernized animal zoo, complete with a River's Edge habitat, WildCare Institute, and behind-the-scenes perspective that casual visitors are not ordinarily privy to. Simply stated, "Animal Always" is highly recommended reading and would well serve as a template for the celebration of other major zoos and animal sanctuaries elsewhere around the country. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well, they tried.
They didn't know how to take care of animals very well back then, but they tried.

Wonderful, rather personal book by the zoo Director, Wm Hornaday. For instance, the Japanese Black Bear, from northern Japan. Lists region, then: "The first specimen exhibited at the Zoological Park was very good-natured, but all those received since are nervous and irritable, and also very timid."

I can't imagine why.

The African Two-Horned Rhinoceros: "was slung under a pole, and carried, 6 days journey on men's shoulders, to the shore of the lake. She is very docile, is very friendly towards her keeper, and it is quite apparent that she enjoys herself." (!)

Lots of great b/w photos, too. Very rare. Highly recommended. ... Read more

As they get older they can become dangerous if they don't know you, but I've never been seriously bitten.' Molly's Zoo is a highly entertaining account of happenings unique to Twycross Zoo. Read about the chimp who took part in a Transatlantic Air Race; how the chimps became much-loved figures when they appeared in the Brooke Bond TV ads; the birth of their first baby giraffe; watching a rare Bonobo gently pick up a sparrow trapped inside its quarters, carry it carefully to the bars and release it to freedom; and the excitement of attending the births of two baby elephants. Customer Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars the zoo as the prime locus of simulation and related cultural matters
Spotte reaches back to the artificial world of the last kings of France for a reference to what zoos are in danger of becoming in today's American postmodern culture: "a modernist collocation with the seventeenth century managerie at Versailles, a place where spectators gawk at beautiful and rare creatures, any debate over an epistemic link with Nature having been long forgotten." This is quite a turn for zoos, which were established to acquaint moderns with wildlife and its habitats and offer sites for the study and protection of wildlife by zoologists and other specialists to expand the public's appreciation of it and the understanding of the ecology of nature all life was involved in. But even zoos have become subject to the technological, largely media, forces and epistemological changes rendering virtually everything imagery and spectacle as recognized by the likes of McLuhan and Baudrillard. The only way to comprehend the zoos and other man-made animal habitats such as aquariums which continue to be a part of cities and towns is by semiotics, not the naturalism and idealism which were their founding motivations. For a zoo or aquarium to become a part of postmodern culture like its myriad other aspects "would involve forcing it into a configuration similar to film, narrative fiction, or art, and were that to happen captive animals might then become expendable, replaced by images or simulacrums," thus making wildlife and more broadly nature even more remote and seemingly redundant. The author has no answer for this dilemma of zoos, which he sees as modernist projects out of tune with the mentality and values of postmodernism. What he offers is mostly a cautionary note in the hope of keeping the zoos and their animals from drifting into a more precarious circumstance. Spotte is a prolific author who is a former curator or director at top U.S. aquariums. He writes from a concern for such places with respect to both the well-being of their animals and their value to society. But the work on this unexpected subject of zoos and such is also a unique work of cultural studies, and especially illuminating for this. ... Read more

Product Description
Modern zoos and aquaria are playing an increasingly active and important role in protecting and managing global biodiversity. Many zoos include wildlife conservation in their mission and have started changing the focus of their institutions in order to increase even further the benefits of their activities for in situ wildlife conservation. With these developments, the following searching questions are now being asked: What is the true role of zoos in conservation? How can they contribute more significantly to global conservation efforts? What are the unique attributes of zoos that can be applied in the conservation landscape? And should zoos be doing more? In parallel with this voluntary movement, legal requirements for zoos to support conservation in the wild are also becoming more stringent. This book defines a new conservation vision for zoos and aquaria that will be of interest to those working in zoos, alongside practitioners and researchers in conservation. ... Read more

Product Description

A visitor to the zoo climbs on board the double-decker tour bus expecting to get a clear view of all the animals. But he soon discovers that not all the zoo inhabitants are easily found.

As he approaches each exhibit, he strains to spot the occupant without success (although a sharp-eyed reader is likely to spot some clues to the whereabouts of each elusive animal). Shouting out, "Where are you?" brings back the response, "Look again. We are here." And sure enough with a second glance, he finds the missing animals.

This classic peek-a-boo, where-are-you story offers a slight twist, however, when the bus reaches an overlook from which the visitor can see no animals at all. "Now where did you all go?" he calls out in exasperation until he once again takes a second look and discovers that all the animals have joined him on the bus.

Product Description

The Zoo is a unique, fascinating, and often amusing history of London Zoo, illustrated with over 70 images. London Zoo had its beginnings in 1826 when Sir Stamford Raffles founded the Zoological Society of London. It was to have a number of "celebrity" animals over the years, including a hippopotamus called Obaysch, much visited by Queen Victoria; Winnie, an exceptionally tame bear who gave A.A. Milne the inspiration for Winnie-the-Pooh's name; and Chi-Chi, the Giant panda, who refused to breed but instead made advances to the eminent zoologist, Desmond Morris.
