5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise
Before I began to read the book All the Way Home by Bookey Peek, a Zimbabwe native, I expected it to be about a family that has taken on the task of caring for the land and animals around them in a time of desperation in modern day Zimbabwe.I was both surprised and pleased when I found it to be so much more. The time frame of the book is modern day Zimbabwe with all of its problems, but that is not what the author lingers on.Instead the author focuses in on what is good and beautiful about the place she has chosen to live.
Richard and Bookey Peek were both raised in Zimbabwe and acquired a love for the country early on.Bookey left the bush she was raised in and, in hopes of finding something better, set out on her ten-year search only to find what she was looking for not far from where she left. One of the best quotes in the book from her was, "So I left, eyelashes and all, and traveled the world for the best part of the next ten years, in search of the place that I had finally found today, in the heart of my own country."
Almost every chapter is prefaced with a very appropriate quote.I found this to be intriguing at first, but later found myself looking forward to reading each of them before the chapters began. The chosen quotes prefaced the feeling and ideas of each of the chapters and put one's mind in the correct context for what they were about to read.I also truly felt at a loss when one was not present to help me begin my journey through that part of the book. The book centers around the wildlife sanctuary that they have started and the characters that are there, but it also takes you back to their journey;when they acquired the land, the work, and the sometimes comedic happenings in the Bulawayo area and Matobo Hills to be exact. However the central character of this story is Poombi, the warthog that came to live with them quite by underhanded means. The baby warthog, Poombi, was acquired in an African store. The book then weaves its magic tail of the bush, the animals, the struggles of life and the love of the area all around what seems to be an insignificant creature to begin with, with the reader discovering, and rediscovering, that nothing is insignificant and that the essential nature of the land and its people are still the same. Her descriptions of the area, the stores, the people, the animals and the land are well written and make one believe that you are right there with her.It inspires a love for Africa, for the wildlife, and for its people.Anyone who is in love with the life and animals there will be pulled through this story with a new hope for Zimbabwe and the future of its wildlife. It is her love story for the land and people of Zimbabwe that began with her life in Zimbabwe and continues still today. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Error-prone guide to great game parks
If Joseph James Shomon's dissertation contained even a small fraction of the number of errors that appear in his "Wild Edens" he would never have received his doctoral degree. The mistaken designation of baboons as "chimpanzees" in a photo spread between pages 80 & 81 is typical, rather than exceptional, of the inaccuracies plaguing this book.Rife with misspellings, its tenor suggests that impressions orally conveyed by safari drivers were incorporated without corroboration.Shomon's account of the death of Michael Grzimek that concludes Chapter 6 confuses Michael with his father, Bernhard, misspells the latter's name, and incorrectly relates the site of the fatal plane crash. For the record, Bernhard Grzimek died watching a circus performance on 13 March 1987, more than 28 years after his son's tragic death.I would not accord the book even a two-star rating were it not for Shomon's admirable rationale for writing it, as explained in the Prologue, and his caution in the chapter on South Africa that safari vehicles with roof hatches are not permitted in Kruger National Park, an inexplicable prohibition that precludes South Africa as a destination for reasonably priced safaris.Had "Wild Edens" been carefully reviewed and edited prior to publication, it may have been a much finer work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different book on wild life....
Wild Edens. Africa's Premier Game Parks and Their Wildlife, by Joseph James Shomon

It was our pleasant experience to read an extraordinary book!Although lacking in graphics, we do consider this one much richer incontent than the morefamiliar,photo-laden publications covering thissubject.

Wild Edens has a verywell written, interesting and variedtext. The author combinesskill with expert knowledge in different areas,i.e., ecology, geography, history and zoology, giving the reader a completepicture of these most important African National Parks. In Appendix 1, ashort essay about David Livingstone and his pioneering disclosure ofcentral Africa, is well worth reading.

Appendix 2, with its complete listof the parks, gives very useful information to readers planning to bevisitors.

An outstanding description of the killing of a buffalo by apack of hyenas in Aberdares Park is most impressive (Chapter 3). The readerfeels strong sensations while witnessing the "cruelty" of thenatural world and the tense relations between hunters and the hunted, innature's domain.

Because this is a book of major interest and value, wefind it unusual to discover a gross mistake...The legend of the colourphotograph depicting a zebra and two baboons at Jane Goodall's camp nearLake Tanganika (see colour photographs next to pg. 80, with a similar photoon the back cover). It reads: "Zebra and chimpanzees"... It isclear that the photographed monkeys are not chimps (Pan Troglodites), butbaboons (Papio Cynocephalus). Zebras and baboons have the same habitat, `savanna', while, typically, chimpanzees live in a forest. It would be rarefor the two breeds, zebra and chimp, to meet in the wild ... their habitats being so positively different. How an error such as this could have beenoverlooked by such a competent author isdisconcerting. However, thisoversight certainly does not, in any other way, jeopardize the specialvalue of a "different" book on wild life.

As Dublin Zoo makes the transition from bars and cages to state-of-the-art animal habitats it is appropriate to record its story so far. Beginning in 1831, stories of animals and visitors are interwoven to record magical moments as visitors experienced the smells, sounds, behaviors, and magic of exotic animals. The mixed fortunes of the zoo are traced as it survived the famine years, political trouble, economic hardship, and public discomfort with wild animals kept in cages. Product Description

In this book, Keekok Lee asks the question, "what is an animal, and how does our treatment of it within captivity affect its status as a being?" This ontological treatment marks the first such approach in looking at animals in captivity. Engaging with the moral questions of zoo-keeping (is it morally justified to keep a wild animal in captivity?) as well as the ontological (what is it that we conserve in zoos after all? A wild animal or its shadow?), Lee develops her own original hypothesis, centred around the concept of "immuration"--defining this in contrast to domestication--and thereby provides a unique addition to the growing body of work on animal ethics.
