A Good Book For Very Young Children
I came to this page (Amazon reviews for the book A Children's Zoo) after puzzling over why this book was on my entering kindergartners summer reading list.It is a nicely photographed book but not one I would think appropriate for anyone over 3 years of age.Certainly my boy and girl,newly 3 and 5 respectively, were uninteresting in it.

Perhaps this is because they are already familiar with these animals (kodiak bear, penguin, hippo, zebra, polar bear, sea lion, lion, parrot, elephant, panda, and giraffe) and found nothing new about the presentation.[Hippo in water.Sea Lion in water.Polar Bears on fake mountain.]

In any case, I would not suggest you buy this for anyone 4 and above:2.5 Stars.

Simple and great
This book in so nice for the 3 to 4 year old range.The pictures catch their eye but at the same time they are learning about language.My 3 year old autistic son enjoys and learns from this book.What more can you ask?

If you have two hungry pandas that are eating a bamboo lunch and they are joined by one cub, how many pandas are there to crunch and munch? Children love to look at pictures of animals, so this book is a wonderful way to introduce them both to the animals themselves, including elephants, pea fowl, monkeys, boas, brown bears, kangaroos, zebras, giraffes, penguins, and fruit bats, and to basic adding facts too!

Suzanne Slade's rhyming text combines with Joan Waites's realistic illustrations to take youngsters on a trip through the zoo not only to learn all about the animals but also to count them. As usual with Sylvan Dell books, four pages in the back have more information in the "For Creative Minds" section, which includes more material on addition and an animal matching activity. There are also related websites, interactive quizzes, and teaching activities on Sylvan Dell's website to help parents and teachers. What's New at the Zoo is certainly an animal adding adventure.

In her book, WHAT'S NEW AT THE ZOO, Suzanne Slade uses clever rhyming verse to make learning about animal families and addition loads of fun and Joan Waites' darling illustrations add to the charm! In addition (pun intended), there is a four-page, educational section in the back of the book that can be photocopied for instructional use.

As a mother, I know my sons would have loved this book when they were younger and I look forward to reading it to future grandchildren (way in the future, please). As a teacher, can't wait to read it to my students - what a fantastic teaching tool! As a writer, I admire the way Suzanne incorporates science and math facts in an adorable story - not an easy feat!

In "What's New at the Zoo?: An Animal Adding Adventure" we go on a trip to the zoo.We learn the different names for the baby animals, other facts about them, and practice adding the number of baby animals to the number of adults.

Cayden:"I liked practicing adding the numbers of the animals together.It got kind of hard at the end but it was fun!I liked learning the names of the baby animals; like that elephant babies are called calves.My favorite pictures were the ones of the snakes and bears.The matching game at the end was fun too!"

"What's New At The Zoo? An Animal Adding Adventure" is a children's animal/adding book by Suzanne Slade with an added educational bonus. In addition to eleven special animal addition pages and problems, there are creative activity pages with suggestions for related games and tasks at the end of the book, including addition methods explanations, Fact Families about related numbers, and animal matching activities. These last four pages can be duplicated to use as teaching materials along with the book. Aimed at children ages 4-8, "What's New At The Zoo?" tackles a beginning math curriculum with fun-filled humour and interest. Full page color illustrations by Joan Waites richly enhances the text for young children.

What's New at the Zoo? takes the reader on an animal adding adventure. This learning zoo adventure begins: "Two hungry pandas eat a bamboo lunch. One cub joins the meal. How many crunch and munch? 2 + 1 = ?" Through delightful rhyming text and numerals Ms. Slade creates a wonderfully engaging learning experience for children. Each page offers a new addition problem.

Within the rhyming text Ms. Slade cleverly weaves information about animals and the names of the baby animals pictured. Did you know that a baby mammoth boa is called a neonate? But that's not all: the illustrations are striking - they are vivid, realistic and elaborate.
Children will love reading this entertaining and educational picture book, in fact, they may not even realize they're learning in the process.

An added feature to this book is the "For Creative Minds" and "Animal Matching Activity" educational section in the back. It offers additional math problems and solutions as well as information on the animals mentioned in the book. It also explains the differences in the animal classes: mammals, birds and reptiles, and asks the reader to put each of the animals shown within the book into their correct class.

I read this book to my three-year-old grand son. He said his favorite part was the picture with the peacocks. I then had my eight-year-old great nephew read it to me while answering the addition questions. They both enjoyed this book as will all children within the intended age group and even those a little younger. I highly recommend What's New at the Zoo?

About the author: Suzanne Slade is the author of over 60 books for children. Her works include picture books, and biographies, as well as many non-fiction titles about animals, sports, insects, planets, and various science topics. During an earlier engineering career, she worked on Delta rockets and designed automotive braking systems. Ms. Slade lives near Chicago with her husband, two children, and their tiny dog, Corduroy.

About the illustrator: Joan Waites spent 15 years as a neo-natal intensive care nurse prior to studying illustration and launching her freelance career. In addition to What's New at the Zoo? Joan has illustrated nearly 40 books for the educational and trade marketplace. She is also an adjunct member of The Corcoran Museum School of Arts and Design in Washington, DC, where she teaches various children's classes for the college's Aspiring Artists programs.

Make sure your messages make it to the appropriate ears.
Mr. Peek the zookeeper has a rough start to his day.After putting on his jacket, he realizes he has put on a few pounds.He heads to work in a glum mood.While making his rounds he mutters things to himself about his diet, age, and his wrinkles.But the animals think he is talking about them!His son meets up with him later and they discover they are wearing each other's jackets.Mr. Peek is now very relieved and changes his attitude for the rest of the day and promises not to get too carried away next time.Now he makes his afternoon rounds saying positive things which the animals are reassured to know that Mr. Peek doesn't feel that way about them after all.

Mr. Peek should have never been so hard on himself to begin with and his negative words made the zoo animals also feel bad.//Mr. Peek and the Misunderstanding at the Zoo// shows how little things can affect our mood in big ways.The story is easy to follow and Kevin Waldron's illustrations are superb.I can see this as a valuable addition to any classroom library.

Have you ever had one of those days where your clothes seem extraordinarily tight? You finally make the connection between the french fries you love and the love handles you don't. It occurs to you that maybe eating glazed crullers for breakfast every day isn't doing your butt any favors. Sadly, it doesn't end there. Those tight pants are making you pretty irritable, which affects your whole day. Now you know how Mr. Peek feels!

One ordinary morning, like every other morning, Mr. Peek dons his very official looking green zookeeper jacket. Except this morning, the jacket stretches tightly across his shoulders and a button sproings right off the front. Oh, this is not a good start to Mr. Peek's day.He tries to tell himself "it's only a button" but his thoughts go downhill from there. Mr. Peek starts to lament how heavy he has become, how the animals are probably all making fun of his girth, and how he's getting too old and wrinkly to do this job.

Mr. Peek doesn't realize it, but his shrinking jacket and negative attitude is affecting the whole zoo. Each time he makes a derogatory comment about himself, the animals in each section of the zoo assume he's talking about them! The hippo thinks she's too heavy, the bear is positive he stinks and the elephant is hyper aware of her deep wrinkles. The crocodiles are nervous, the penguins don't want to eat and the giraffes believe none of the other animals like them.Mr. Peek is wreaking havoc on the zoo, albeit unintentionally.

On his rounds, Mr. Peek stumbles across his son, Jimmy, wearing a very large green jacket.Why, he hasn't hasn't gained too much weight, but simply donned his son's much smaller jacket!Greatly relieved, they swap jackets and the zookeeper retraces his steps through the zoo, murmuring uplifting statements. Once again, the animals overhear and are overjoyed to hear his positive words.

Awesome illustrations and a really humorous misunderstanding that takes on a life of its own make this a darn funny book.Mr. Peek is totally oblivious that he's alarming the entire zoo, mumbling along about his own insecurities.He's got the animals all worked up and doesn't have a clue.I particularly love the alarmed expressions on their poor faces as their keeper rattles on about their physical limitations and character flaws. It really is a toss up as to which is better - the illustrations or the story.Win-win for the readers! ... Read more

I recently bought this book to add to my classroom library. The pictures are vivid and colorful. The story makes a great read aloud. My students loved the cute baby animals and wanted to know more about these animals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals!

Fantastic book for kids and adults
I'm not really a fuzzy, cute, baby animal kind of guy.Or so I thought.We bought this book to read for our first child, who is not due until December.But I can tell you that comparing it with all the other kids books we've received, I would MUCH rather read this book 10 times each week than anything else.The pictures are fantastic, the text is witty and educational, and I'm sure our baby is going to love it.There is a blog too ([...]) with lots of other great stuff, and an adult book - ZooBorns - that we just ordered.

Great to stimulate a baby's senses, teach everyone a little about animals, and give parents an enjoyable read!

Adorable and Educational!
This book is filled with adorable baby animals and cleaver rhymes describing each of them.I bought several books to give as Christmas gifts this year for my nephews and niece.It will be a fun way for the kids to learn different animal names and I know the adults will love all of the great photos.If you are looking for a gift for a young child or animal lover (of any age) this is a great choice.You can't go wrong with these baby animals!

Replaces the TV show for us
Unfortunately the station that used to show 64 Zoo Lane has decided that 2:00 am is a good time slot in favor of yet another Dora episode...So I was thrilled to find the books to take its place!They are the exact same stories as on TV, illustrated in brilliant colors with large, easy to read text.

Fun-ish to read but words too big for children
I have a Bachelor's degree and still couldn't understand every word in this book so there's no way that my 14 month old would understand.He got bored quickly with this book (that's a first).However it could be fun to read to an older child just don't expect them to be able to read it for quite a while.The poems were fun and a play on words.

Very Cute and Entertaining
My 2 year old loves it. It has re-adhesivie plastic stickers. Not stickers that can be reapplied. But those "static" cling like stickers. It's great fun to put the animals in silly places in the zoo. Big hit! Good for a car ride or for potty training.

Great Fun to Read and Hear
Whilemy 5 year old grandson was visiting we borrowed this from the library.We had so much fun reading this that I ordered it to be at his home when he returned.My daughter says he is still laughing every time he reads it.The words are easy to sound out and the storyline is very funny.
