Product Description

This text describes the realities of modern Parsi religion through 30 interviews in which urban Parsis belonging to different social milieus and religious schools of thought discuss various aspects of their religious lives.

Zoroastrianism, the faith founded by the Iranian prophet Zarathustra, originated around 1000BCE and is widely regarded as the world's first revealed religion. Although the number of its followers declined dramatically in the centuries after the 7th century Islamic conquest of Iran, Zoroastrians survive in Iran to the present day. The other major Zoroastrian community are the Parsis of India, descendants of Zoroastrians who fled Muslim dominion.

Product Description
This volume treats the Greek and Latin references to Zoroastrianism since the works of Benveniste, Bidez and Cumont and Clemen. It focuses on the possibilities offered by the classical reports on Zoroastrianism to reconstruct the history of that faith. The text is divided into three sections: the first deals with introductory problems concerning ancient religious ethnography and current views of the history of Zoroastrianism. The second section consists of commentaries on five selected passages. Finally, the third section offers a thematical overview of the materials and their relevance for the history of Iranian religions. The book aims to illustrate the diversity of beliefs and pratices in ancient Zoroastrianism. ... Read more

Product Description

Zoroastrianism is one of the world's oldest religions, though it is not among the best understood. Originating with Iranian tribes living in Central Asia in the second millennium BCE, Zoroastrianism was the official religion of the Iranian empires until Islam superseded it in the seventh century AD. Centered on the worship of Ahura Mazda, the All-knowing Ruler, Zoroastrianism follows the practices and rituals set out by the prophet Zarathustra, according to the indigenous tradition.
As one of the world's great religions, Zoroastrianism has a heritage rich in texts and cultic practices. The texts are often markedly difficult to translate, but in this volume, Prods Oktor Skjærvø, professor of ancient Iranian languages and culture at Harvard, provides modern and accurate translations of Zoroastrian texts that have been selected to provide an overview of Zoroastrian beliefs and practices. In a comprehensive introduction to these sacred texts, Skjærvø outlines the history and essence of Zoroastrianism and discusses the major themes of this the first fully representative selection of Zoroastrian texts to be made available in English for over a century.

Product Description
This is part V of the Sacred Books of the East Pahlavi Texts translation. It is the shortest one in the series, about half of most other SBE volumes. SBE 47 contains translations of a number of very late Zoroastrian texts, some prophetic in nature, others providing clues to the chronology of the religion. As such, the texts here, the Dinkard and Selections of Zad-Sparam, make interesting reading. They will be of use both to scholars looking for information about the development of Zoroastrianism, and those looking for non-traditional books of prophecy. West concludes that the traditional date of the birth of Zoroaster corresponds to 660 [BC]; more recently, 628 [BC] has been proposed, so the former date probably isn't so far off. He also computes the timetable of Zoroastrian prophecy: don't get too excited, though, the end of the world isn't until 2398, so we still have about four centuries left. Product Description
This is part IV of the Sacred Books of the East translation of the Pahlavi Texts of Zoroastrianism. There is a legend that after Alexander the Great conquered Persia, a huge amount of Zoroastrian literature disappeared. In this volume West presents what is known about a number of fragmentary Zoroastrian texts, some only known by name, including summaries, digests, and stray quotes from other books. Product Description
This is part I of the Sacred Books of the East Pahlavi Texts translation. It includes a number of crucial medieval Zoroastrian texts: the Bundahis, Selections of Zad-sparam, the Bahman Yast, and the Shayast la-Shayast, as put into writing about the sixth century [AD]. The Bundahis is of note because it is a collection of Zoroastrian traditions about the creation of the world. The Shayast la-Shayast deals with matters of ritual impurity, sin, and rituals related to purification, including many cases related to dead bodies. The Bahman Yast is a prophetic text, which details thousands of years of history, including the downfall and rebirth of the Zoroastrian faith. West compares these texts respectively to the Biblical books of Genesis, Leviticus and Revelation. (Quote from sacred-texts.com)
