This seller failed to ship my book in time for my daughter to attend school. I ordered it 1 Aug and 26 Aug it still did not arrive. To this day, the status still says "not shipped." I had to buy the book from the university. I had to filed a claim with Amaszon since I have had it with poor communication. This seller provides little to no response. Stay away from this seller...

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced
This book has a good mix between chemistry and biology. You do not need to be a strictly a biology major or strictly a chemistry to understand the concepts presented in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biochemistry Book Ever
I used this book for all four years of biochemistry classes while getting my B. S. in biochemistry. This book was my main reference in classes which suggested other texts. It saved me thousands of dollars because I never had to buy another book on the subject.I still use it two years later as a reference in my lab.In addition, it has been incredibly helpful while making my way through my Master's.I can't think of a subject that it leaves untouched. It is a relatively easy read and it's very logically laid out.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality, great value
This book was required for a class and was about $50 cheaper on Amazon than the campus bookstore. The book is in very good condition. It is by no means my favorite class, but the book is a good supplement to the class material and makes a pretty tough class more manageable/understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfy
Condition was excellent and it look brand new also I would reconmmend people to buy from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars good quality of book and delivery service
I buy this book is not because its cheap price (only 34 cents), but because I know I need a principle book in the area of Biochemistry, peticularly in food take in metablism related topics. Based on the reviews other reader provided, I understood that I was ordering a right one. My advise to these self-taught reader: do not use a comprehesive book at beginning. Always start with something old and simple. It will give you enough understanding and confidence before you read more details. I really appreciate for all different reviews provided for scientic textbooks. ... Read more

With a balance of topic coverage and depth this updated third edition covers the subject of biochemistry, and reflects the advances made in this field since the second edition published in 1981. These advances are incorporated without loss of historical perspective and without obscuring the main goal of the text: to teach the enduring fundamentals of the discipline. Included in the third edition is a completely reorganized part one introducing the flow of information from gene to protein. It emphasizes the growing interrelatedness of molecular biology and biochemistry, and acquaints one with experimental methods of both disciplines. Also included is 150 new problems and a wealth of new material on molecular genetics and cellular processes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed book to study from
This book is the textbook I had to buy for my Biochemistry class. I find myself relying more on the book to learn concepts which the professor introduced during lecture. This book is highly detailed in terms of definition and examples, although sometimes it may get too detailed. Those extra details sometimes aren't worth studying for because they will not likely be on the midterms or the final exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplement book
I find this textbook to be a good supplement to the one I use for class (Lehniger).
It provides clear & simple understanding of the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Students Listen Up!
This was definitely what I needed.I saved a whole bunch of money by not using my university's book store. This book even came with the interactive CD which was also pretty expensive.I wasn't even sure that the book came with the CD because it was only mentioned in the comments of the product. So make sure you read each items description carefully because it could end up saving you about a hundred bucks! The book is in fantastic condition too.Who cares if there is highlighting in some chapters I'm just gonna end up doing the same thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Biochemistry readable
Unlike most Biochemistry books, this one is readable. It also has full solutions for every problem at the end of the chapter (not just odd or even soluton sets from your typical science text book). i'm taking this class as MCAT review and it is helping me remember a lot of the orgo and gen chem II stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, one-semester course in biochemistry
This book is not intended as a detailed account of biochemistry, rather it is meant to be used in its entirety as a semester-length, overview of biochemistry.Further, I would argue that the text is geared towards pre-medical and pre-physician assistant students, because a lot of interesting topics such as sulfur metabolism are not covered.Unlike larger tomes introducing a student to biology or organic chemistry, Essential Biochemistry sacrifices depth for the information a college instructor actually has time to teach in fifteen weeks.Even so, this slimmer volume has perhaps too many details, but it is much more focused than books two or three times its size.

As a point of criticism, I question the need for the first few chapters of the book. You should know basic chemistry and biology before you take a course in biochemistry. But these obligatory chapters stating the obvious seem to be a staple of all introductory science texts.

The text is well-written and pleasant to read. There are some interesting figures and charts, but the most helpful are the detailed diagrams for specific biochemical pathways (the citric acid cycle, glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, etc).Scattered through the text are "boxes," commentaries and information that provide "a closer look" at a specific topic or area of historical and current research.I liked reading these boxes because they offered a break in tone from the rest of the text. Finally, the book comes with an accompanying CD.I did not make time to use the CD, and so I cannot offer a review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Descent
Shipping time was great and the book was in good condition overall. However, there was a large amount of highlighting that was not mentioned in the book description.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just started this class, but this book is very informative.
I just started going through this book and so far it is an invaluable resource to my class. It looks like it will come in handy as a great reference tool far after I have completed my veterinary studies!

5-0 out of 5 stars biochem bookskis
The book was as expected, not brand new but still in fairly good condition.Shipping was quick and that's all that I was really looking for.Would recommend this book to any college biochem student and this seller to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed coverage...once you know the basics
I was first introduced to this book in my 3rd year undergrad biochemistry course (a biochem-for-biochem-majors course). I couldn't stand it! It went into so much detail about every aspect of biochemistry (well above and beyond the scope of the course), but never provided any simple introductions. Advanced material is always appreciated (by me, at least), but not in the required readings, and certainly not when there's no gradual introduction into it!

Three years later, I had to take a basic biochem course (with no exemptions allowed...argh), and the required book was the Berg, Stryer, etc. textbook. That book provides a great low-level introduction. Being the kind of person that likes to know a lot about a topic and actually UNDERSTAND material as opposed to memorising it, I started referring to my old Voet & Voet text again. What a difference! When I read sections of V&V with a basic understanding of the concept, it was very informative, helpful and INTERESTING!

I highly recommend V&V for everyone who wants to UNDERSTAND (not memorise) biochemistry, but absolutely not as the main textbook for an intro course. It's a great supplementary resource for those intro courses, and a fantastic reference afterward, but it's just too complex and in-depth for the beginner, even the beginner chem or biochem major.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not quantitative
There are no quantitative worked examples in any of the chapters! The authors leave it up to you to solve the problems
at the end of each chapter, and then consult the answer book: a pedagogical mistake! For you to solve some real-world
problems, you can't just rely on the derivations and presentation of their formulae, they need to show how the formulae can
be combined and rearranged to solve problems. Great color illustrations and plenty of detail, but not practical. ... Read more

The OWL code does not come with an online version of the textbook.

I am taking biochemistry again as a graduate student, so this is not the first time I have to deal with biochemistry and its books, resembles one of my worst nightmares, I have to tell you, that this book cover most of general biochemistry that you have to know like many other books, but with one difference " you can actually understand what you are reading", it has a much simpler and clear aproach than other books, this defenatily a book for a student, specially undergraduate. It has a good organization, everything fact is illustrated with an example, which really helps you to understand better a concept, and in each page you have key words, which is always a good reminder, a summary of important concepts in the end of each chapter, which really helps you review after reading and for the exams, and also the questions review in the end of each chapter they are excellent, working with each concept from the basics and moving to more challenge questions, there is also a web site, I just found out last night, where you can see the molecules and reactions in 3D and taque quizes(excellent). I also purchased the study guide which I didnt get yet, but judgging by this book I dought it is not going to be worth it. Now don't get the wrong idea, biochemistry is a complex subject, you will need to study and dedicate, and this book is a tool for and will make much easier for you it did for me. Thanks for the authors, finally somebody made a book focus in learning and teaching not just for biochemists that already know a hell of biochemistry..Thank you soo much..

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolute help
I nearly did not buy this book because of the reviewer who claimed it did not contain the solutions for the text problems - but other reviewers said it did, so I took a chance and bought it. The main detraction of this guide for me is that it's easy to miss that there are worked solutions because it's the section at the back. I don't have time for the discussion questions, crossword puzzles and such BUT the worked solutions have saved me in this class.I no longer waste time wondering where I went wrong after attempting the problems. This guide for me is a must-have to accompany the text. The explanations so far have been just right for me to follow. I gave it only 4 stars because the first half is a waste for me and makes the solutions guide nearly as thick as the text!

3-0 out of 5 stars not what i thought
i thought this book would be explained solutions for the problems found in the actual textbook.its actually just a review book relating to each chapter, with new problems/ solutions/ quizzes etc. still useful, but not as correlated to the textbook as i had thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry
This book is very useful, though the book may not contain as many problems(e.g muitipule choices) to be solved as you think!
Anyway,I buy this book in order to prepare GRE sub-biochemistry exam.and I find it great ,not only assist you for the exam, but enhance your biochemistry knowledge as well!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
The producted was in the condition promised by the seller.I am satisfied with the product BUT I paid extra for priority shipping and it took over a week to receive the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This workbook contains cross-words and a variety of different quiz questions to help review.I probably use this source more than the text associated with it, because our class is focused around the lecture moslty. A great buy and a great way to keep up with the material. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars These people all lie
Don't misjudge my review; I'm not just some lazy kid who hates all work.I'm in the honors program at UCI studying to be a doctor. And this book isn't very good. The reading, I will grant, isn't too bad. Most of the time it's easy to follow, and sometimes it's confusing. However, the problem comes when you try to put it all to the test and do the problems at the end of the chapter. Not only does the book present problems that were not covered in the reading, but it doesn't explain the answers, either. It just gives them to you.I am forced to constantly ask a friend of mine if he knows how to get the answer they give, because the book gives no indication of how to arrive at it.It also withholds information; in one problem in chapter 5 the answer they give is only possible, ONLY possible, if chymotrypsin cleaves a protein at isoleucine (the book only gives leucine, not iso-).In the next problem, it is virtually the same thing, taking cleavage information and trying to put amino acids in the correct order. However, in this one, their answer insists that you NOT cleave at isoleucine.Otherwise you'd be wrong and wonder what you did.Of course, you'd get no explanation. If you have to get this book for a class, then fine.Good luck with the homework if you have to turn in the problems. But if you're getting it to further challenge yourself of your own accord, search around for some type of solutions manual first, because this book won't tell you how to get anything. It assumes you have a lot of background knowledge already, so I don't know where one reviewer got the notion that this is great for beginners...if you want a good book for beginners, seek out the Garrett & Grisham book.It simplifies biochemistry beyond belief compared to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!
Mathew's Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read.If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper's Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines.i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed).the book just keeps getting better.the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter.as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem.it makes it seem easy and fun to read.you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best biochemistry book
I have not seen the 2000 edition yet, but the previous edition is very elegantly written. Compare with some other biochemistry text, this book provides another view into biochemistry. Almost (if not all) all thechapters have a special topic after the chapter text, showing you how wecan turn the dry text into useful experimental tools for solving life'sproblem, scientifically. These special topics also give us a view into thephysical chemistry world, which has become more and more important at thetime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Illustrative
It's difficult to review a book on a subject as biochemistry, when you're a student, and this is the only book I've read on the subject. This book is used by medical students at the Universty of Bergen, Norway, and as a student I find it very easy to read (if you have mind that biochemistry isnot an easy subject). The illustrations and figures in the book arehelpful, and often, you can get the essential in the text by only lookingat the figures. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product.
I purchased this product in good condition here on Amazon and was able to sell it in good condition on Ebay. It was not new, but because I needed it for a class it was functional, it had all pages and every page was legible.

2-0 out of 5 stars FRUSTRATED AND ANNOYED!!!
Its been almost a month since I ordered my book and it still hasn't arrived. Part of the purchase included a question testbank which I received promptly but the book hasn't arrived. I've sent 4 emails to this seller and still haven't received a reply or information on my order. So I suggest if you need something promtly don't buy from this seller. I'm getting behind in my class and will now have to buy another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BUY :)
It was here really quick and exactly as the orginal book except easier to carry around. GREAT PRODUCT>

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Expected!
I had to purchase the book because of the General Biochemistry course that I took at school. Although it is a well-written book, it does not provide the materials that are covered in our class. I do not even know why this book is required for an upper-division general biochemistry course! In other words, the book is very superficial and does not have enough substance.

Moreover, there are a lot of errors in the answer key section. You can pay slightly more and buy Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, but at least you would have something that you can learn from. I would not recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry text that leans more on the chemistry side...
This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon.Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts.2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc)Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:
- Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.
- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)
- Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

1-0 out of 5 stars Error after error; ripped from wikipedia
Error after error, and diagrams ripped straight from from wikipedia. Pg 156 shows wrong structures for cytosine. Unbelievable

2-0 out of 5 stars full of errors
This book looks like it might be an easy read until you encounter error after error, and then you get bogged down double checking the facts that the editors should've done. There was one error on p18, two on p19, and one on p20 that started getting me frustrated because they were back to back to back. I was able to grind through them because I knew the material, but was becoming concerned that if there were mistakes in new material, I would be incorporating incorrect info into my long term memory. That would be worse then never having read the book. I decided to give the book one last chance and jumped ahead to the nucleic acid chapter. This was mostly new material to me, so it was a good test to see if this book was detailed enough to teach me something new where I couldn't fill in the gaps subconciously. My first observation was that half the chapter on nucleic acids was spent on how to make a pyrimidine and a purine, which I don't think is very relevant. Since the chapter was only 20 pages long, I would've expected it to be almost entirely on the biochemistry of RNA and DNA (at a high level view). It didn't matter, I was quickly lost trying to decipher the 11 step uracil monophosphate synthesis diagram, and my two semesters of organic chemistry didn't come to my aid.

I gave it two stars for those who already know the material and just need a refresher, and who get some sort of thrill by playing gotcha with the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good re-hash
I studied the subject some 20 years ago, and needed to get re-acquainted with it for further study purposes.
The book is good for this purpose, but is certainly not comprehensive in its coverage of metabolism, the main essence of biochemistry.
It should be remembered that most people that study biochemistry are NOT going to be biochemists, as it is a para-medical and para-clinical subject for most disciplines.
The book is an adequate re-introduction to the subject, but no better than that.
Get hold of Schaums theory and problems in biochemistry after this one.
Derek

5-0 out of 5 stars summary
This is a good summary, but a college chemistry book is more detailed.Yet it fills some gaps to a chemistry course.I would suggest previewing the chapters before purchasing the book to make sure it is the right purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars High Error Rate
This book conveys the idea that the reader is destined to become a successful biochemist after reading it. This is true, in the sense that the reader must already know quite a bit of biochemistry to sort out all the errors, inconsistencies, and oversimplifications in it. Then the book might serve as a refresher. Of course, then the reader has little need for it. Otherwise, this book is more likely to propel the reader into a state of confusion, rather than to a luminous career in biochemistry. Try Biochemistry For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)) instead, although the coverage is rather different. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for those who are planning to hate biochemistry
The problem with this book is not the veracity of its information but the way it is written. Some experts will probably get along with it but the neophytes will suffer with the boring, confusing, tiresome style of almost all chapters. I believe that Harper's is the great responsable for many generations of biomedical students that see biochemistry as a unappealing discipline, albeit essential. If I were a student I would buy this book only for inducing sleepiness or boredom. This is the first time ever I give a one star to a product of this site, but Harper's does deserve it. In this very same Amazon.com one can find biochemistry texts which are superb, must have and, above all, friendly to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars worse than tlephone book
Harper's biochemistry book is even worse than ordinary telephone book.

It does not contain properly built chapters. Knowledge presented in this book is too simplistic.

This is only the list of known biochemical facts without any further analysis.

This book contains too many errors in given compounds formulas, what cannot be explained by ordinary mistakes in printing.

I would recommend to use Stryer's book instead of this one.

    This book is a disaster.

2-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry for Dummies
I am a medical school professor and am familiar with the different biochemistry textbooks.Harper's is a simplified text book that does not have the detail of depth of information one finds in the gold-standard texts of Lehninger or Stryer. There is a reason why these texts and not Harper's are much more commonly found in the undergraduate, graduate and medical school classrooms.Harper's is ok for the educated layperson or for the non-biologist who wants an overview of biochemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complicated
I'm a second year med student and this is the most difficult book I have to read. No so much because of the difficulty of the subject but cause it's written in so complicated way. Also to fully understand the contents I think one must have somewhat biochemical background. Which alot of people don't have. I find myself reading more from wikipeadia then from the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for review
While this book may not give quite the same level of detail found in some of the more massive and expensive intro to biochem texts, it is nevertheless a valuable reference. The fundamentals are all here, in an admirably clear and concise form. That makes going back to review much easier than with the fat books. In that way, this book fills an important gap in the field of available texts. If however one comes across a particularly difficult concept, the concise explanations may leave them wanting or needing more.In fairness though, I think a lot of the fatter books have the same drawback despite their longwindedness.Afterall, biochemistry can be pretty tough no matter what book you're looking at.If you are using the book as part of a class, then theoretically that is why there is an instructor, lectures and tutorial sessions.Admittedly, and to the student's detriment, the system doesn't always work out that way.I've found the book to be excellent for review because of its brevity and clarity. This book also gets high marks for attempting to point out the clinical relevance of the material, something that cannot be said for the majority of the big textbooks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant info for med school and boards
This book contains clinically relevant biochemistry for medical students. The chapters on cholesterol are great, and more accurate than other texts.I had trouble with biochemistry--study the pathways over and over again, then read the text, and it will all make sense. Also, the clinical portions of this book are very pragmatic. And the writing is clear and the text concise.Relevant pathology for boards is covered at the ends of chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Medical Writing
This book by Miriam Rosenthal and Robert Glew is a rare example of superb writing and excellent pedagogy.Because the writing is so very good, the book is easy to read.

The book relates biochemistry to medicine, and so is more useful and interesting than mostbiochemistry textbooks. It's a huge improvement over the pretentious and obtuse textbook _Biochemistry_ by Berg et al.

It's also easy to handle--one can pick it up with two fingers.
