Book Description
Cell mechanics is the field of study that looks at how cells detect, modify, and respond to the physical properties of the cell environment. Cells communicate with each other through chemical and physical signals which are involved in a range of process from embryogenesis and wound healing to pathological conditions such as cancerous invasion. Similar principles are also likely to be critical for success in regenerative medicine.Cell mechanics is thus central to understanding these principles. As cell mechanics draws from the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics, this book aims not only to provide a collection of research methods, but also to develop a common language among scientists who share the interest in cell mechanics but enter the field with diverse backgrounds. To this end all of the contributing authors have sought to explain in plain language the nature of the biological problems, the rationale for the approaches, in addition to the methods themselves. In addition, to balance practical utility against conceptual advances, the book has intentionally included both chapters that provide detailed recipes and those that emphasize basic principles.

* Presents a distinctive emphasis on matrix mechanics and their interplay with cell functions
* Includes highly significant topics relevant to basic and translational research, as well as tissue engineering
* Emphasizes mechanical input and output of cells ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great help to student or researcher
I found this book a great help to someone who has a biology background butnot necessarily a lot of knowledge on certain topics. With all theinformation available about genes and pathways through Medline and otherwebsites, it is a great reference to have when you are not familiar withterms or subjects mentioned in abstracts, etc... So far I have always beenable to find at least some information on the entry I'm looking up. Itsvery helpful that common acronyms are included too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad is a quick kill
To get the quick and fast H.Y. facts for the boards this is the one! Its shorter and to the point in comparison to BRS. Note this is not a good book for class only for the Boards

5-0 out of 5 stars Very High Yield!
High yield cell and molecular biology is exactly what it says, and from the outset doesn't pretend to be anything else. "Lean efficient text" says the blurb, "Study guides with the barest essentials". These words certainly comforted me after reading the somewhat ominous title! The text is compact, with clear and helpful diagrams illustrating and clarifying the most difficult concepts in the book. The style is in fact very much the same as I might choose to write own revision notes, with chapters divided into sub-titles, and those into bullet points. Key words are emboldened, so it is possible to absorb a page by only scanning the bold type; useful if you are caught short when preparing for an exam and need the facts quickly! There is a smattering of clinical examples throughout, and descriptions of procedures such as PCR, which both help anchor your thoughts of the sometimes abstract nature of the subject. Being a molecular biology book it is biased toward genetics, and as this is a confusing area for many students (including me), this will help if your genetics lectures tend to sail several meters over your head. On the downside, the economic nature of the text and the no-frills nature of the diagrams mean that it is not a particularly colourful or engaging read in it's own right. This is also positive, meaning that it is easier to extract information quickly than would be possible from a more bulky text. It is clearly meant to be dipped into, rather than read cover-to-cover. Realistically though, who would read a textbook cover-to-cover?People who will benefit from this book will be pre-clinical medical students, those intercalating a BSc in clinical science or genetics, doctors requiring an up-to-date review, or other students of biomedical science. This should not be your only textbook on cellular biology and genetics, but will serve as the perfect revision tool when exams sidle up too close for comfort. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
The third edition of The Neuron provides a comprehensive first course in the cell and molecular biology of nerve cells. The first part of the book covers the properties of the many newly discovered ion channels that have emerged through mapping of the genome. These channels shape the way a single neuron generates varied patterns of electrical activity. Next are covered the molecular mechanisms that convert electrical activity into the secretion of neurotransmitter hormones at synaptic junctions between neurons. The second part of the book covers the biochemical pathways that are linked to the action of neurotransmitters and that can alter the cellular properties of neurons or sensory cells that transduce information from the outside world into the electrical code used by neurons. The final section reviews our rapidly expanding knowledge of the molecular factors that induce an undifferentiated cell to become a neuron, and then guide it to form appropriate synaptic connections with its partners. This section also focuses on the role of ongoing experience and activity in shaping these connections, and finishes with an account of mechanisms thought to underlie the phenomena of learning and memory.New for the Third Edition: This is a thoroughly revised and expanded edition (60 pages longer) and features a new 8-page, 4-color insert as well as the following changes:1. The mapping of the human genome and that of other species has led to the discovery of numerous new proteins that regulate the excitability, development, and function of neurons. These have been incorporated into the new edition in nearly all of the chapters. 2. The first section of the book, which deals with neuronal excitability, has been reorganized to make it more readable for those students with less background in physical sciences. A new chapter has been added to this section to allow the incorporation of new information on ion channel structure and on the role of channel auxiliary proteins in modulating neuronal excitability. 3. A new chapter, "The Birth and Death of Neurons," has been added to the last section. In addition to covering new discoveries about the early development of neurons, this chapter describes the recent discovery that new neurons are continually being formed in certain parts of the adult mammalian brain. It also describes research on stem cells, which holds therapeutic potential for the repair of damaged or diseased brain tissue. 4. The use of imaging technologies in the study of the brain has expanded enormously in the past few years. The new edition describes some of these new approaches. Moreover, the introduction of full color plates now allows many new images to be presented in their original form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful text
This is one of the few molecular neurobiology textbooks available to the serious student. Overall, it is a very well written text, up to date, and quite detailed.

There is one weird quality about the book, however: the authors have not directly referenced statements in the book, as you would expect to find in any good advanced textbook in a scholarly field. They have instead written a bibliography at the very end, consisting of "Recommended Reading" and "References" for each chapter. I am unsure what criteria they used to differentiate the two.

Other than this minor point however, it's a first rate buy. The authors deserve several pats on their backs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neuron details
The molecular biology of the neuron is considered, from its electrical properties, synapses, differentiation, axon pathfinding, to chapters concluding with behavior and memory. Well written and includes easy to follow schematic diagrams, this reference is suitable for the motivated general reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on all levels
"The Neuron" was a fantastic book to read. It served as a perfect mesh between a textbook and a novel. The book was written in plain english so anyone could enjoy it. The concepts discussed ranged from elementary to advanced which provided a nice progression to more complicated things. This book is a must read for anyone interested in neuroscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable
I have compared several neurobiology textbooks and this one is my favorite. It's almost like a novel, very enjoyable. It emphasizes understanding of important concepts rather than throwing an overwhelming amount of facts at the students. And the organization of the material is great. There is an updated edition now, and I look forward to reading it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text
This is an excellent text for medical histology. I have read this book cover to cover twice and highlighted the heck out of it. My opinion is that if you know this book, you will know general medical histology. At times the material is much more detailed than you will need to get through your Histo course, but it is well worth it for developing a greater depth of understanding. The book has excellent microphotographs and illustrations throughout, so you won't be left wanting when the text gets really dense. Be forewarned though, this book has numerous errors. Most of them are small (like typesetting, spelling, and figure labels) but others are more fundamental mis-statements (or perhaps misleading statements) about molecular mechanisms and processes. These problems do not take away from the value of the text however, since the more significant errors are usually in the minutia and may just be a product of the publication lagging behind our evolving understanding of different processes. I would definitely buy and read this book again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid histology reference and study guide
This text has been helpful while studying cell biology and histology in medical school. The images and accompanying text are both high quality.I think that it could be improved in some instances by adding more electron microscopy images along with the light microscopy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Histology book that I've found.
This Histology book is the most thorough and well-written text out there. If you have no background in Histology, this book can be quite intimidating because it is content-rich. I was very overwhelmed when I first started with this book for undergrad, but now that I have gotten through it and read other titles for med school, I believe that this book is the best. It teaches Histology in a way that prepares you to be a real pathologist, using mostly light micrographs and tons of clinical correlations. Other Histology texts (e.g. Color Textbook of Histology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access) treat the subject as a general learning tool rather than as a core component of your potential specialty. They use more (and less-detailed) illustrations and electron micrographs with fewer clinical correlations and light micrographs.

Still, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this book to medical students if the book was not already required. It is probably more detailed than any medical school Histology course will be, and as a med student, your time is everything! Your time will probably be better spent in gross. Still, if you know that pathology is something you are interested in, this book is a great introduction to Histology and will better prepare you for your career than any other text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Histology: too much text
I agree with the first and second review. I use this book as a reference for hard-to-understand concepts. As a first year med student, however, I never really have time to refer to it because it is too content-dense. I would prefer a book with more pictures; perhaps just a picture section with pointers on important points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an amazing book, excellent book, It's easy to read, good graphics, It's everything you need for completely understand of Histology ... Read more

Book Description
Between 1940 and 1970, pioneers in the new field of cell biology discovered the operative parts of cells and their contributions to cell life. Cell biology was a revolutionary science in its own right, but in this book, it also provides fuel for yet another revolution, one that focuses on the very conception of science itself. Laws have traditionally been regarded as the primary vehicle of explanation, but in the emerging philosophy of science it is mechanisms that do the explanatory work. William Bechtel emphasizes how mechanisms were discovered by cell biologists. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only one out there, but you don't need it
Like others who have reviewed this book, I bought it because it's the only one out there. The other books are just practice tests. This book alone did not adequately prepare me for the biochem subject test. What it did do is provide a guideline to things I needed to review in depth using my own text books from college. Also, the practice test in the back of the books was far easier than the practice tests from the GRE website, which were more in line with the real test.I would not purchase it again.Rather, just use the info provided by the GRE website to guide you and rely on your text books and lecture notes for review.

2-0 out of 5 stars An less than adequate test prep
This book provides a very, very basic review of the major concepts of biochem, cell biology, and molecular biology (i.e. genetics).I found this review helpful, but the detailed questions of the actual exam require a much more detailed review. This prep was also chaulk-full of typos, mistakes, improperly tagged vocab words, and incorrectly drawn chemical structures (texas carbons and nitrogens, double bonds to hydrogen atoms, etc.) that required me to look up the actual structure or correct definition. The practice exams were also a bit easier than the actual exam was, so an accurate gauge of how well you are doing cannot be obtained with this test prep.If all you need is a brief review before your subject exam, then this will probably work, otherwise review your old corsework and notes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Critical Errors- DO NOT BUY
This book is rife with errors and mistakes, an in critical ways. For example, one question, on a fairly basic topic, asked what %age guanines are in a DNA molecule (double-stranded) that contains 20% thymines and 30% purines.Given that guanine is a purine, and adenine is a purine, this implies that the breakdown is as follows: 20% A, 20% T, 10% G, 40% C.This is clearly impossible, as that would not be a stable molecule.

Other idiotic errors abound, but I provide that as the absolutely worst examples. This book leaves me with absolutely no idea how well I will do on the GRE, and has basically been a useless study aid.I find myself correcting it far more often than it corrects me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible.
Definitely not worth the money, or anything for that matter. Not only does the book have typos, but the information is incorrect.Everything is summarized (and not very well at that!), and "old school" terms are used.Remember: it's cheap for a reason!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your money
Unfortunately, I have been disappointed with this book. It wasn't helpful for me. After reading part 1 of this book, I realized that it is not reliable. I noticed a couple of structural mistakes in important biochemical pathway molecules and some spelling errors. If you have a couple of months to prepare for this test, I would suggest quickly going over your main science books. Good luck everyone with the EXAM! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great work! Great Speaker! Great Science!
Listening to this book it was an immense experience to hear how Dr Lipton explains about the ins and outs of the biology. What I found particularly higly interesting, was the constantly present buildup of lower-level phenomena (e.g. cell biochemistry interaction) to a collective higher level observables (e.g how a collection of cells express themselves).

Where I must compliment Dr Lipton is his enthusiasm with which he speaks. I necer heard an 'uh' or any other kind of pause and it never seems as if he is reading from a paper too. This for itself is a joy to listen to.

It all, makes a very well founded scientific piece of work and presented higly interestingly. As a physicist I feel pitty for myself not to have studied biology instead.

In the later chapters it comes to the point of mentally controlling the physics (of the body - the cells). There, and only there I am having a conflict. Not because I am in a tight scientific tube of thinking, but because it just can't be. What I mean to say is this:
Dr Lipton refers to 'buying into the disease'. To put my opinion clearly I will polarise with an example to the more extreme: Suppose I have no legs but 'I do not buy into that', will that make me walk?
OR: if I command my cells (in whatever way) not to feel the pain when walking hot coals, what happens with my command if the 'coals' appear to be 1000 degree Celcius. My feet will vaporise, if I feel it or not.

Dear Dr Lipton, you are a great man and I love you for this work and your enthusiasm, but there are real physical limitations as to what we can command our cells to do. I hope you can appreciate that.

I hope I'll ever meet you. Only one star reduction because of the latter argumentation.

Nevertheless one must and may not fail to share Dr Lipton's thoughts. A must have, a must read! Higly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of Your Cells CD
This set of 8 CDs opens a window to understanding what is really going on at the cellular level of especially the human body and what this means for our health and well-being.Narrated by the author Bruce Lipton in an easy-to-listen-to way and also presented in language that is easily understood for the non-scientist, ordinary person in the street.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conversational and oh so informative
I love this series! Bruce Lipton discusseschallenging topics with a passion that inspires my ears and mind. The chapters are well segmented too, and there are practical examples woven in.

"I am listening to the CDs you sent me... they are fantastic... totally changing my understanding of life itself !

Thank you SOOO MUCH !"

That's the note I received from my son, a pretty brilliant guy himself, after sending him Bruce Lipton's The Wisdom of Your Cells CDs. My husband, aprofessor at UCLA, and I just sat enthralled by what we were hearing. We'd already read the book and I had also ordered all the DVDs available by Lipton. Listening to the CDs are totally expanding my consciousness. They wonderfully complement my other studies of quantum physics, consciousness, and health.

The information is enlightening and exciting. This is no small potatoes stuff. This is information people need to have.No matter who you are, you will get a lot from these CDs. ... Read more

Book Description
LABFAX volumes are purpose-designed data reference books for practicing scientists. Each book presents the key information for a major subject in one place and so saves hours of searching. It does not simply collect together data which is already available in catalogues since this is often incomplete and can contain conflicting information. Rather, the authors and editors of each LABFAX volume have searched the primary research literature for the accurate data they know the subject specialist needs.
Cell Biology Labfax is a detailed compendium of essential information - on microscopy, subcellular organelles, membranes, receptors, inhibitors, hormones, genes, buffers etc. - needed on an almost daily basis by researchers in cell and molecular biology. As a data reference source it is a natural companion to Molecular Biology Labfax. ... Read more
