I like histology, but this text just didn't match my learning style.

Pros:
1. The cd was a little useful, but don't get your hopes up. It's the same "plate" images provided in the text with an ability to enlarge them.
2. Organized fairly well.
3. I haven't found many errors

Cons:
1. Too dense. Honestly there is considerably more information provided in this text than what's needed in medical school.
2. The text also lacks any type of end of chapter summary/review or quiz questions.

This book is our textbook at the med school. It does not really cover the material that we need to know, while there are a lot of other things there that we don't need to study for our class. It is also not a well-written text that you can read fast and at the same time make connections between the materials that you read. I use Basic Histology by Junqueira, which is more compact in size and delivers more useful info for medical histology.

Good combination of practical and theoretical.The topic of health is of course quite contentious, but from my (good) personal experience with Jubb, his perspective and methods - and I can say that you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Urine drinking and enemas (just to mention a few parts of the book) have been around for a long time but Jubbs uses cutting edge research to help us understand exactly why practices like these are so critical to restoring our bodies' full health. My only disappointments are he spends alot of time talking about what foods are bad but not enough on which ones are good. I assume his others books have that info. And there is no explanation on how he reportedly lives on tea and honey (far less than the 2,000 calories a day doctors say we need to maintain ourselves)

I definitely agree with the previous review. The book is scientific and very technical, however David was compelled to explain things as they are, and not to "dumb things down". A book like this usually takes time to fully comprehend, and invites the reader to research more, even if it's starting with finding out the definitions of the terms used.

I HIGHLY recommend this book above any other book in the health/nutrition/cleansing field. Dr. Jubb has spent decades summarizing the most advanced information about the human body.

Firstly, let's talk about the structure of the book. This book is broken into three sections:

PART 1 is an introduction to the evolution of computing and how CG has been used for medical simulations and scientific visualizations. It contains three chapters that discuss how hardware and software are progressing over the years in respect of technology. So, this first part of the book is a bit overwhelming on theory. Those who are familiar with CG concepts and terms might see interesting to skip this part.

PART 2 is a Maya crash course. Well, not so "crash" if you consider this is a ten chapters walk. It goes from Maya Interface through Dynamics ending up with two great MEL scripting chapters. Maya users may want to skip this part. However, I consider the two chapters on MEL scripting valuable even for those who are already Maya/MEL users.

PART 3 is the heart of the book. However, it is a rock-solid one. This part contains five project-based chapters. If you are an experienced Maya and MEL user, so you are at one of the most interesting playgrounds you could be. If you are not experienced with Maya/MEL, I suggest you to go back to PART 2 and consider reading it. These five projects/tutorials will make you dive deep into the world of MEL scripting. And believe me: it's rewarding.

This is not a book for the casual 3D modeler and animator. This one is for those really interested in how Maya and MEL can be used to generate 3D animations and simulations for the biology and medical fields. Almost every picture inside this book is related with biomedical applications.

Those looking for learning Maya, this book really brings a pretty descent foundation course on this software. Those looking for learning MEL, this book is a must buy. Just please keep in mind that every example and exercise is targeted to cell biology and its related fields.

Overall I think this book is a decent addition to anyone looking at science visualization if you have a good knowledge of Maya already.
The book is broken into two sections. The first half of the book is really just an intro to maya. If you need this info, then the second half will completely blow you out of the water. I found the second half to be fairly engaging- it is really an exercise in MEL scripting - and a good one.
I think the book could give a more general overview of sci-viz, and not get into specifics so much.

This is a great resource to get started with your cytokine response analysis.
It covers a lot of the basics with some cartoons for the novice. There are specific bioassays for almost all cytokines and some chemokines, but if you want to get some real cutting-edge work done, you may end up reading more up to date literature (the latest edition was printed in 2001).

This is a high school senior level introduction to discoveries in biochemistry.The read is easy for the subject; for example, how cells seem to react logically (i.e. with a brain) to their environment is slowly and systematically shown to be done by chemistry.Cell simulations using neural networks are treated lightly with an outlined example; then the reader is cautioned that any simulations are too simple for real cells. The style is a bit wordy; but you will be introduced to topics which you can penetrate further using Google.

This book is full of fascinating information.Wetware is a book about the cell, it discusses the mechanics of signal transmission, the relationships between the various parts of the cell and the emergent phenomenon that result from a cell's architecture on a case by case basis from protazoa and amoeba to our nerve cells.The commentary describes both the complexity of the cell in terms of its adaptability to a diverse ecosystem as well as the plausible origins of how such complexity evolved.The book argues a strong evolutionary case about life and its origins.

Most of the book is very readable and gives the non-expert an insight into how through diffusion cells react and signals are processed.Cases are studied and the strategies of such single celled organisms such as the ameoba are discussed in strong detail.Examples of environmental sensitivity are discussed and "intelligence" to the extent that even single cells have architecture that allow them to dynamically adapt are explored.The exploration of the single cell is the most interesting, likely because it can be studied in isolation and thus its easier to discuss a single cells properties than a multi-celled organism.The book goes through a lot of interesting material, it discusses RNA, protein structures and dynamics and neural networks.The Neural networks portion is a good overview of how they work and how they can be used in a machine setting to obtain interesting results.As the book gets into the multicelled aspect, the quality doesnt go down so much as the material can be slightly overwhelming.Despite that, the themes of the book can still be gleaned despite some of the specifics being a bit hard to follow.

One reads this book and really mavels at the complexity of the single cell.The author gives a good example at the end - the fruitfly is able to, with negligble energy, navigate efficiently, the computing power required for humans to replicate that is of a very different order of magnitute.The cell is of microscopic size but astronomical complexity and that is where one must stop in awe and appreciate the amazing depth of life.This book takes the reader on that journey.The author tries to only take what can be observed and doesnt try to fill the gaps with intelligent design.He shows how genetic programming results show that solutions to complicated problems show up unexpectedly in evolutionary settings and that is no evidence of design.I found this book to really revitalize the idea that life is truly astonishing.It is not only astonishing from the perspective of muticelled organisms and our own self awareness, but more foundationally, from the single cell and up. I highly recommend this, it should be read by all.

Phase transitions occur throughout nature. The most familiar example is the one that occurs in water – the abrupt, discontinuous transition from a liquid to a gas or a solid, induced by a subtle environmental change. Practically magical, the ever-so-slight shift of temperature or pressure can induce an astonishing transition from one entity to another entity that bears little resemblance to the first.

So "convenient" a feature is seen throughout the domains of physics and chemistry, and one is therefore led to wonder whether it might also be common to biology. Indeed, many of the most fundamental cellular processes are arguably attributable to radical structural shifts triggered by subtle changes that cross a critical threshold. These processes include transport, motion, signaling, division, and other fundamental aspects of cellular function.

Largely on the basis of this radical concept, a symposium was organized in Poitiers, France, to bring together people who have additional evidence for the role of phase transitions in biology, and this book is a compendium of some of the more far-reaching of those presentations, as well as several others that seemed to the editors to be compelling.
