Product Description

The book gives a summary of the state of the art of cryobiology and its applications. The accent is on the underlying physical phenomena, which are common in such opposite applications as cryosurgery and cryoconservation, and the corresponding mathematical models, including numerical ones. The treatment of some more special issues is moved to the appendices. The glossary contains definitions and explanations of the major entities. All the topics considered are well referenced. The book is useful to both biologists and physicists of different level including practitioners and graduate students.

Product Description
This book presents a state-of-the-art summary of the applications of low temperature to clinical situations, together with details of the underlying principles of biology. It provides specific information for the clinicians and research workers in a number of areas of current interest and attempts to provide a unifying theme of cryobiology of interest and value to those researching a clinical problem. Specific topics discussed include the effects of low temperatures on mammalian systems in the absence of ice and how the changes can be modulated to achieve desired results; low temperature storage of tissues and organs for transplantation in the liquid state; the effects of whole body hypothermia in man and how it relates to mammal hibernation; problems associated with ice formation and the subsequent freezing of cells and tissues; cryopreservation of blood cells, reproductive cells, and tissues, such as the skin and cornea. Other interesting issues featured include the developments in cryopreservation of large, highly-organized structures and the destructive powers of ice formation in cryosurgery of diseased tissues. ... Excerpt: In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the womb, in vitro. IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. The process involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process, removing ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium. The fertilised egg (zygote) is then transferred to the patient's uterus with the intent to establish a successful pregnancy. The first successful birth of a "test tube baby", Louise Brown, occurred in 1978. Prior to that, there was a transient biochemical pregnancy reported by Australian Foxton School researchers in 1973 and an ectopic pregnancy reported by Steptoe and Edwards in 1976. Oocyte with surrounding granulosa cells "Naked" EggThe term in vitro, from the root meaning within the glass, is used, because early biological experiments involving cultivation of tissues outside the living organism from which they came, were carried out in glass containers such as beakers, test tubes, or petri dishes. Today, the term in vitro is used to refer to any biological p...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=57880 ... Read more

Excerpt: Cryonics (from Greek kryos- meaning icy cold) is the low-temperature preservation of humans and animals who can no longer be sustained by contemporary medicine, with the hope that healing and resuscitation may be possible in the future. Cryopreservation of people or large animals is not reversible with current technology. The stated rationale for cryonics is that people who are considered dead by current legal or medical definitions may not necessarily be dead according to the more stringent information-theoretic definition of death. It is proposed that cryopreserved people might someday be recovered by using highly advanced future technology. The future repair technologies assumed by cryonics are still theoretical and not widely known or recognized. Cryonics is, therefore, regarded with skepticism by most scientists and physicians, although some do support it. Fewer than 200 people have undergone the procedure since it was first proposed in 1962. In the United States, cryonics can only be legally performed on humans after they have been pronounced legally dead. Cryonics procedures ideally begin within minutes of cardiac arrest, and use cryoprotectants to prevent ice formation during cryopreservation. How...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6760 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Society for Cryobiology, an international scientific society, was founded in 1964. Its objectives are to promote research in low temperature biology, to improve scientific understanding in this field, and to disseminate and aid in the application of this knowledge. The Society publishes a journal called Cryobiology.Although many members of the Society for Cryobiology encouraged or helped in the development of early-stage cryonics in the 1960s, the Society became openly hostile towards cryonicists in the 1980s and banned cryonicists from membership. ...
