Pretty Good
It's a pretty good book and very interesting as well. Has practice problems and lots of pictures and figures.

The book is excelent however it took way longer than expected to arrive, I contacted the seller and the person was very nice, and the book arrived in good conditions. I am happy with the transaction but it took a little too long.. but its ok i didnt mind it!

quality textbook
This textbook is well-organized an clearly written. Clinical relevance permeates classical and molecular genetics. Very satisfied with this text and I will keep it as a reference for the future.

More like genetics of disease then clinical medicine
This is one of those comprehensive texts that can be difficult to wade through at times, but at least the writing is decent even if there is a glut of information.The focus is on the genetic mechanisms of disease and technologies used to detect and augment genetic information.For me, the book serves as a good review and extension of first-year biology, as well as an introduction to where DNA technology came, where it is, and where it might be going.

Terrible Bio Book
This is NOT a good textbook. Its explanations of even the most simple processes seem extremely confusing, simply because the writing style is wordy and ambiguous. The diagrams are also unhelpful, with coloration which makes their explanations unclear. If you are trying to learn genetics from this book without a competent professor or a previous background in genetics, good luck.

This is a good company. I received the book before the projected date. The book was in as good of shape as promised. I would buy from them again.

If it's required, get it, if it's not...then don't...
I am taking an honors genetics course right now and I truly despise this book. I find the wording hard to understand and vague, and overly wordy. I asked my professor about the wordiness and sometimes she has a hard time deciphering what the book means, but since she knows that they are TRYING to convey she explains well. The book itself is also poorly organized.

Example. First chapter is a dirty run through of DNA,structure, meiosis, and proteins (not specific at all, a middle school kid should know these things). The next few deal with problems. They give you ONE example. Then a billion problems. You NEED the solutions manual for these.

Then they go through virus replication, etc. Then they move onto epistatis, pleiotropy, etc. FINALLY they run you through how DNA itself replicates. Uhhh, HELLO?? Shouldn't that have been the FIRST thing we learned?? How can we apply the concepts of pleiotropy when we don't even know how DNA replicates?


They explain some concepts not very clearly at all, and believe it or not, I had to go back to my 7th edition campbell&reece biology textbook to get some of the concepts, especially for DNA replication!! Unbelievable!

Helpful but could be better
I have tried to teach myself genetics via popular books like "For Dummies" and "Demystified" -- this one is very helpful but it still fails to be explicit enough for a rank beginner like me.But given the spectrum of books out there, this one is certainly worth a try and I don't regret buying it.

Good book for understanding what is what
Yes, there are recent advances in the field. But this book is devoted to understanding the subject.

My kids love this book
My boys, 8 and 9, just ate this book up. They read it, discussed it and read it again. They ask me questions I probably don't know just so they can explain it to me with what they've learned from this and the Physics book by the same author. If grade school age children can understand the information and get something from it then you know it has to be well explained and enough fun to keep even their short attention spans from cutting out. I'm ordering the chemistry book next. No such thing as too much knowledge.

Very helpful in understanding the basics (and then some!)
This was the first of the "Cartoon Guide" series texts that I published, and it was arguably the best.The authors do a wonderful job of explaining fairly complicated concepts and ideas, and do so in a relatively interesting (and humorous way).

If you're going back to school after working for a while, or are just beginning your bio / genetics / etc coursework, you should probably pick up a copy of this.I really can't say enough good things about it.

The target audience should not be referred to as "...for Dummies"
This engaging method of simplifying by means of "comic book" illustration works very well to help people visualize concepts which can be pretty arcane.

Great Service
I was concerned that my package had not been sent because I had not found it in my apartment by the time the estimated date had arrived.Turns out that it was sitting in my mail box and my roommates never retrieved it.In the end, I was quite satisfied with what I found.The book was in excellent condition!

I have serious reservations...
As I see it, there are three major problems with Genetics for Dummies so, for the sake of clarity, I'm going to split them into categories:

READABILITY
This book is obsessed with minutiae.A representative passage from the first half:

"Another set of cyclins and CDK work together to push the cell through the second checkpoint located between G2 and mitosis.As the cells grow, the chromosomes, now hooked together as sister chromatids are alike in every way"...

Now, I recognize that this is a detail-oriented subject, but I felt that sometimes the minutiae got in the way of the big picture.For example, in the section on genetic engineering, I was very interested in how scientists know that putting a fish gene into a tomato (or whatever) will make it spoil more slowly.I still don't know.But I do know that "the all-purpose promoter often used in transgenes for plants is from a pathogen called Cauliflower Mosaic Virus (CaMV.)"

ACCURACY
I haven't taken biology for 25 years, so you could tell me that cell division is caused by gremlins and I'd have little choice but to take you at your word. Every once in a while, though, the author stumbled into an area that I do know something about and virtually every time her information was wrong.A few examples:

From pg 314:"Francis Galton is best remembered for his contribution to law enforcement.He invented the process used to identify people by their fingerprints."

No he didn't.William Herschel did.Galton just worked out the classification system.But even if he had invented it, it would be an aside. The man was a freakin' giant. Admittedly, often misguided, but geez...

"In direct and vocal opposition to the US Constitution, Galton was quite sure that all men were NOT created equal" (with regard to intelligence--km)

Setting aside for a moment that Galton was British and therefore not bound by the US Constitution, I think there are very few historians who read this passage as a guarantee that we can all become brain surgeons. It was a piece of political philosophy offered as an alternative to monarchism.

On 152, we find a full-page rant about the dangers of anabolic steroids.What do `roids have to do with genetics?Not that much, really.But what concerns me is that the author provides no evidence that these dangers exist and just follows the mealy-mouthed political party line.In truth, the dangers of steroids are wildly overstated and have little scientific or statistical evidence to back them up (not that I'm suggesting anyone should take them.)

"The view that intelligence is heritable is still widely accepted despite abundant evidence to the contrary."

This should read "almost uniformly accepted by the scientific community."Also, I am unaware of a single credible study that does not support a heritable component to intelligence. How did we humans evolve our big brains and how do we breed such clever little dogs if there is nothing for the selection process to act on?More on this subject later...

With regard to melanoma:"Always use sunblock with an SPF rating higher than 30."

In fact, SPF 15 blocks 94% of UVB rays, 30 blocks 97%, and 45 blocks 98%. Far more important is how much you put on and how often you reapply.Also, and I'm not 100% sure about this, I don't think sunscreen protects you from melanoma.

"progeteria (a disease that causes rapid aging in children) [is] also associated with older fathers."

It's actually `progeria' and it doesn't cause aging, it causes some of the symptoms of aging.The older fathers thing is right.

"The highest rates of prostate cancer occur among African-American men, probably because of lack of screening and delayed treatment."

I threw that one in there because it's such a head-shaker.How would screening and treatment affect how many people get prostate cancer?Whether you survive it, yes.But whether you get it?

Now, I know some of this seems nitpicky, but how can I feel confident in the incredibly complex information found in this book if the simple stuff is wrong?

EVOLUTION
I believe the word appears once in the text and not at all in the index.The vast majority of discussion on the topic consists of a tepid commentary about the publication of Origin of Species.Probably less total ink than we got on steroids.

Worse, there seems to be a vaguely schizophrenic effort to obscure the subject.Consider the following from page 199:

"A gain of function mutation creates an entirely new trait or phenotype.Sometimes a new trait is harmless, like a new eye color.In other cases, the gain is decidedly harmful."

Notice anything missing?That's right, the new trait can also be beneficial.(As blue eyes probably were based on how quickly they seem to have proliferated. An example of sexual selection?) To be fair, there is a section in which the author says that all living things appear to be related, which is why I use the phrase "vaguely schizophrenic."

Then we have this gem toward the end of the book:

"Biological determinism assumes that genes are expressed in precise, repeatable ways--in other words, genetics is identity is genetics.However, this assumption isn't true.Gene expression is highly dependent on environment, among other things."

Great.Couldn't she have told me that genes don't matter before I slogged through her book on genetics?Long live Lamarck.

Look, I understand that Natural Selection offends liberal and conservative alike and it makes sense to tread lightly in many situations.But this is a book on the SCIENCE of GENETICS.Evolutionary theory is the foundation for the whole thing and is one of the areas most affected by advances. Can I get a shout-out to Chucky D?

So, I don't know.I guess I learned something. Some of it is probably right.But, overall, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable rolling any of it out at a cocktail party full of geneticists.

Excellent introduction to Genetics
The book covers all the concepts of modern genetics in a light manner, easily understandable and with a good dose of humor. Each chapter goes into the right depth: not too deep and not too superficial. I don't know why the above should be considered an activity for dummies, but I guess this is the marketing appeal of the whole "for dummies" series of books...
Recommended for anyone interested in getting a quick introduction to the subject or as a refresher crash course for those that have studied the subjects eons ago (like myself).

human molecular genetics book
I already knew this book since my human genetics exam at the University. I used to study on the 2nd edition. I did not like it very much because it was a bit confusing with a lot of info spread in the various chapters of the book. You could not study on it without an help of the teacher..

excellent for a broad review
HMG3 is a great book for those looking to review the large and growing field of human molecular genetics. It lacks the molecular biological detail that dedicated textbooks such as MBOC contain, but has a large amount of useful information regarding experimental approaches in human molecular genetics, and clinical ramifications of basic science research. I have found it an ideal core reference for graduate work in human genetics.

I did not get it at all yet!
I have ordered this product and after one month we didnot get and it seems gone astray in the mail. So am now still wait for replacament which will take another 2 weeks to arrive hopefuly. It is really disappinting experience hwne things goes wrong!

Nice illustrations
This book is a pretty good read for thoes with advanced genetics knowledge. It reviews some of the more basic processes in the beginning before diving into the human stuff. Actually Enjoyable to Read
This book was required for our med school PBL courses, and I can certainly understand why. The text is nicely written, and the "Clinical Commentary" sections are great for understanding how we as physicians come into the picture. A subject like genetics can become very formidable if not presented correctly, but (thankfully) this book got it right.

Best Succinct Text for Medical Genetics
I have been teaching medical genetics to medical students and graduate students for more than twenty years, and I have been using the Jorde textfor teaching medical students since it was first published.

This text is the most succinct text available to my knowledge on the topic of medical genetics.This is perfect for medical students who have relatively little time in their schedules for genetics (16 lecture hours versus 48 hours for graduate students).The text is very clear, has great examples, ties in medical applications with the scientific explanations of principles, and has a wide array of online resources readily available.With very little exception, every page is worth the reading for medical students, and is helpful for them in learning what they need to know to become fully conversant in medical genetics and well acquainted with the general principles and emerging technologies.[I wish the cytogenetics chapter were illustrated better, but this is a minor weakness relative to the other strengths in the text.]

This is not the best text available for graduate students in clinical or medical genetics if the text is to be used alone (i.e. not supplemented with articles to add deeper levels of details).For students with a full 3-credit graduate course in medical genetics, it does not have quite sufficient depth, in my opinion.I don't have any significant experience teaching undergraduates, and will leave that area to others.

All in all, these authors have put together the clearest and most concise resource on medical genetics, and I highly recommend it for any audience whose needs are for efficient and palatable material on the principles of medical genetics.

Fascinating Book, and Well-Written
I bought the Kindle edition of this book, and my only regret is that the author's other books are not currently available on Kindle -- his writing is so good that I would buy them all!

His compassion for his patients comes through clearly, and the book does not 'talk down' to the reader, even though there is a lot of medical terminology; at the same time, he doesn't talk over the reader's head.

I loved the puzzle-solving aspect of this book, and also his description of some of the ethical decisions he must make, such as whether to discuss with a stranger a genetic anomaly (that will affect his life span and health)he can tell the stranger has by looking at him, or whether to bring up the obvious genetic issues the young daughter of an old college friend has.

Again, a fascinating book, one which I will probably re-read (which I usually don't do).I highly recommend it.

Pathos of a Geneticist
When I picked this book, I was expecting an impersonal account of whatever genes do. But with each story, Dr Marion brings in his human element to the implications of things going wrong at the minute, invisible to the naked eye level.
Pediatric radiologist. Each by itself is a specialisation. Its amazing to see the vast field of medicine accomodate combinations too.
With diagnosis, symptoms of different conditions like spinal muscular atrophy (its updated name) and infant botulism, the author increases the medical databases of general people. After reading the book, you get an idea of how an infants body and inner mechanisms are not in the same stages of development and hence how they handle things differently.
Amniocentesis.

A unique and meaningful view of genetics
I could not put Genetic Rounds down once I started reading it. Dr. Marion's story telling abilities captured the essence of each child and family, the difficult ethical dilemmas they faced and his dedication to being together with them in partnership on the journey. Good Review
since I had read Seeds of Deception, this book basically was a review for me because it mostly had the same information in it.

This is a must own book.
I knew absolutely nothing about Monsanto or GMOs until a good friend put some brochures in my hand on March 31.She had been to a seminar where Jeffrey M. Smith was speaking.Those brochures can be found at [...].

This book is important in that it gives people like me who are 100% in this fight something to say to people who haven't a clue."Go read Genetic Roulette" please. Do it for your health and your children's health.

I for one, don't remember signing up for this lab experiment.Maybe I'm wrong, but don't people get paid for participating in Scientific Experiments?That our government should put us through this and not even bother to let us know what is going on our dinner table really makes me angry with them.I thought things had to be labeled in this country.The UK bans this stuff, China gets labels... and in the USA most people don't even know what a GMO is.

We have been GMO free, (as much as possible without proper labeling), and my daughter's stomach aches are gone.My son's growing pains are gone.My headaches are gone.We are all losing weight without even trying.I'm convinced.

I'm a Brazilian agronomist and I tried to read, online this trash-book, here in Brazil. And I must tell that this book is 100% percent against GMO (genetically modified organisms) and also a trash-book.
I began to read this trash-book, online. At the page 49, the author and crook wrote about a "research" "did" in a Russian "famous" "scientific" journal called Ecosinform. This "research" reproduced on page 49 of this trash-book, claims that mortality rate among rat pups that ate GMO soy was 50%, against 10% among rat pups that ate non GMO. Well, I became curious about this "research". Very curious, I went to google and finally I realized that the Russian "famous" "scientific" journal called Ecosinform doesn't existed in any time; at least until today. The crook that wrote this garbage invented, from his sick mind, a lot of hysteria against genetically modified organisms. After see this level of decieve, I decided not to read the rest of this garbage.
This trash has only two real uses:
1-You can know the level of pseudo-scientific hysteria, preached by Greepeace, Friends of Earth, Al Gore, etc.
2-You can read on some others reviews of this same book, how easily average Americans are decieved by a charlatan.

One man's fact is another man's unsubstantiated scaremongering
Largely based on unsubstantiated anecdote and vague studies by anti-GM groups, whilst at the same time ignoring the many independant peer-reviewed papers that show his many 'facts' to be incorrect at best and completely fabricated at worst.

Do a web search for 'Academics review genetic roulette' for a chapter by chapter analysis of this book in the context of peer reviewed data. An intelligent mind will always read both sides of the story.

Excellent, if just for the references alone!
This is an excellent companion to The Gmo Trilogy, for readers who wish to go into greater depth. The book explores possible medical risks associated with eating genetically modified foods, and comprises 1-2 page abstracts and essays by researchers. There are a lot more hypotheses than actual conclusions here, so none of these works have reached the stage of becoming peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. Skeptics may attach whatever significance they wish to that fact, but the references to each article are published, verifiable, and legitimate. In fact, if the dangers of GMO foods is a topic of interest to you, this book is a worthwhile purchase for the references alone! The articles are all of a scientific nature, and do not address social, political, or economic issues.

One recurring theme which comes up in these pages is the idea of drug resistance transmitted from ingested foods to intestinal flora. A common trait of many genetically modified plants is selective pesticide resistance. The desired crop can then be sprayed with these pesticides. It was previously believed that stomach acid would break down the plasmids which confer pesticide resistance, but that has been shown to be incorrect. Intact plasmids have been recovered from intestinal washings. There is prescedent to hypothesize that these plasmids could be transferred to gut flora, and under the right conditions, could cause a multidrug-resistant intestinal infection.

I don't have the expertise to judge the danger this may represent (maybe nobody does), but I would be interested in comments from anybody scientifically trained in these fields ... Read more

Genetics book
I haven't used the book yet but I was really unsatisfied with the price I paid for the book when I opened it up and saw that pretty much every page was highlighted with a million different colors. This book was only about 20 dollars less than what it would cost brand new so i was disapointed that i didn't just buy it from my school.

easy read for genetics text

Journey of Humans

This was one of the most wonderful books my husband and I have ever read.I would rate it 10 on
a rating scale of 1 to 10.It is so informative on genetics and very easy to read and understand.Dr. Spencer Wells is a marvelous author and fabulous scientist of the Journey of man from beginning to here in 2010. I highly recommend it.

First thing, locate the roadmaps near the end of the book
The Journey of Man is a reasonably well-written book with a fascinating story.But you will find it MUCH easier to follow the story if the first thing you do is find the diagram and migration map that in my paperback copy are on pages 181 and 182-3:

If you have easy access to a photocopy machine, copy these pages, study how they relate to each other, and keep them handy while you are reading.

The paperback book lacks the photos in the more expensive hardcover edition, but provides a URL to access them on the web.While pleasant in a National Geographic sort of way, they are not at all critical to understanding or appreciating the story the book tells.

Very interesting, but not very easy reading
Using genetic data, the book describes how homo sapiens populated the world.
As apparently reliable genetic data go back "only" about 30,000....50,000 years, the book does NOT describe the development of man, but starts with the fully developped homo sapiens - our own species.

It is fascinating, what can be read out of genetic data, and the conclusions are often startling!

My only critisism with this book:
Relying as it does on "genetic markers", both on mDNA (?) and on the Y - chromosome (?), it would have been helpful to devote a chapter, or at least an appendix on what are genes, chromosomes, why do markers not get distorted by natural selection, etc...

The interested layman cannot be expected to know this, and so the book used a lot of undefined (undefined for the layman!) terms.

With such an appendix, I would have given full marks to this book!

A riveting read
I found this book difficult to put down.It is a great insight into the work being done into human genetics by someone involved in the field.The book takes the reader through a description of the techniques used in a way suitable for laypeople, discusses our common ancestry and the theories around that, describes the genetic evidence for migration out of Africa and then devotes roughly a chapter to each major continent.

The author communicates in a clear style, acknowledging the many contributions by others and without blowing his own trumpet.My main criticism of the book is the lack of graphics.At one point the author actually describes a graph, rather than putting it in.Seriously.The lack of maps illustrating the points being made in the text is also very annoying. While some maps are included, they serve largely just as a reminder of geography, rather than illustrating the data. There are also a small number of apparent contradictions and some over-stretching of analogies.

While I enjoyed the book thoroughly I was extremely frustrated by the lack of visual information, especially in a book intended for laypeople, and I have deducted 1 point for this.

short but good
I am a retired professor of population genetics and I should like to keep myself in the mainstraim of population genetics. There are several recent good books on this topic, but they are quite expensive. Since much time I know the author as one of the best theoretician in population genetics, author of an excellent but hard to understand fully without serious efforts.
The present book is in principle destined to students and the author is supposed to make an effort to render accessible his teaching. In this course, some parts are really very classical and easy to understand - actually, it was what I taught to my own students of "DEUG and "Maîtrise" level. Of course, it was not that which I looked for in this book. For instance I was interested by the concept of "coalescence" which is too recent for I am aware of it during my time of activity. And indeed, it is quite well explained by Gillespie. Frankly speakig, when it comes to the field of which the author is a leading specialist (and which is more familiar to me), things become of more difficult access. But I must confess that I have probably been less hungry of these subjects.
This book will relly bring the students who use it to a high level and they will prepared to access to the most advanced developments of population genetics - provided that they make the necessary effort!

Gillespie makes sense.
Theodosius Dobzhansky said, "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution."

Mike Lynch at Indiana University added, "Nothing in evolution makes sense except in the light of population genetics." (PNAS)

If such is the case, Gillespie's book is an essential guide and workbook through the foundation of biology in terms of mathematics and probability.

1.) The book flows.It begins with the basics of Hardy-Weinberg, and makes the mathematics of population genetics easy by building on the basics slowly through the book's chapters.Important mathematical background is addressed in the appendices.

2.) Each chapter has questions at the end to help crystallize the material.

3.) Examples from the scientific literature are used judiciously.

4.) Lucid explanation of genetic drift, the coalescent, and neutral theory are all provided.

I have nothing but the highest praise for this classic.

Not very "introductory"
I bought this book because I thought it would be a straightforward introduction to population genetics.The first two reviews were written by people who already seem to understand population genetics fairly well; for someone who was genuinely just starting out, however, I cannot say I found it particularly digestible.

Terms are used in this text without any definitions until much later on.Topics are also divided in such a way that they are introduced in one chapter in an advanced form, and then a basic form revealed later!A friend with ADHD attempted to explain a Monte Carlo simulation to me once, and reading this book kind of reminded of me of that.

Also, the book is littered with complex formulae that students are intended to decypher for themselves, with random notes in the back of the book that may or may not assist with this - often, no verbal/written attempt is made to explain what they are for.Students require clear descriptions of what a formula does, and how it can be applied, and in what sort of circumstances long, long before they give a damn about the proofs.

This was written by somebody very fond of navel gazing and showing off their 9th grade algebra and less about providing any instruction about population genetics.This needs to be a lot clearer and more concise in the future.More descriptions of when/where to use formulae, and what they are for.Use examples from actual organisms to make it interesting, and maybe somebody will actually read it.

Very nice "Demystified" book
I have"Idiots Guide to Decoding your Genes" but this one is much better.I really feel that I have gotten a toehold on this subject after reading "Genetics Demystified."Recommended.

Good re-intro for ex-students, light on classical genetics
A reasonably good introduction to the subject for someone who has not done it, or is re-learning it after a long lay-off.
Tends to be more biased towards the molecular level of genetics, which is probably due to the advances in this area in the 20 years since I did it.
Does not tackle Classical or Population genetics in any depth.
Nevertheless, a good book to get you re-interested in learning the subject of genetics again, and learning newer technologies.
However, you will need to move onto bigger and better books very soon.

Good Solid Entry Level Book
If you are a beginner wishing to learn genetics, or in need for a quick refresher, then this book serves the purpose well. It is organised in a logical fashion, doesn't go down to too much details and does a fair coverage of the topic. My two minor issues with the book are: (a) there are some editorial errors and (b) the mulitple choice questions are too easy - they test your memory rather than your understanding of the topics. However both can be forgiven if in you need a entry level book on genetics.

A good book for review of basic genetics and delving into harder aspects too

Do not be fooled by the cover!This book is extremely informative and even a fair amount beyond my understanding, being in the middle of biology honors.Therefore this book would be great to read, since it outlines many concepts of genetics in biology honors, in AP biology.This way one can get the basic concepts of biology and genetics while also being able to delve into advanced genetics in the later part of each chapter.
Now on to the science.The most interesting part of this book to me was about genetics outside of the nucleus in chapter 10.I was amazed to learn that mitochondria actually have their own DNA, and that they were once bacteria, and that they had gained relationships of helping with bacteria that couldn't create energy from oxygen, urkaryotes, and eventually merged with them when they came completely dependent of each other.The mitochondria gave some DNA to the urkaryote so the mitochondria became dependent as well. The DNA in the mitochondria is almost all inherited maternally, which is what makes them great for studying humanity's evolution.By looking at DNA from people around the world, scientists were able to pinpoint the earliest human, from which all other's are descendents, was an African women living 200,000 years ago by seeing that mitochondrial mutations in greatest difference were between Africa and the rest of the world.By seeing how many mutations there were from the African mitochondria compared to the rest of the world, scientists figured out this date by rate of mutations which occur in DNA.
Another big concept I begun to understand in this book was how evolution is really driven by economics.Darwin himself could not really understand how offspring got characteristics from their parents, but nonetheless knew that variations occurred over time in species because he was ahead of his time.The answer, we now know, is that mutations will occur in DNA, either beneficial, neutral, or detrimental, and for the most part the animal with the beneficial mutation will reproduce and survive better, then replacing the nonmutated DNA.An example where a detrimental mutation will be dominant, however, is sickle-cell anemia (explained in class one day), which will cause disease when homozygous (having two of the same alleles for a gene), but when heterozygous are resistant to malaria, making it dominate in areas with malaria like parts of Africa.A bad "gene pool", or a mixture of all genes in an area, of an area like this can be very hurtful to a society.
Going more into gene pools and so-called "population genetics", equilibrium (no change in allelic frequencies, meaning no change in genes) can occur in a population if there are five things occurring in it, which really shows the different ways in which a species can mutate and evolve.The formulas for this Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (founding scientists) are the following: 1. A closed population, meaning no individuals leave or come in, which would change the gene pool left in the population.2. Normal meiosis, so that only chance determines the genes in the child after mating.3. No mutations in allelic states, which will occur unless the states cancel the other out.4. No natural selection, meaning that all genotypes can survive and reproduce equally well, basically making all alleles equal.5.Infinite population and random mating within it, making it so small sot of "cliques" of genes don't form from repeated mating of the same genes, making pockets of the population different from the rest.This mainly occurs in smaller populations so don't really affect larger ones.
These 5 ways to prevent evolution will always be broken, showing the number of interesting theories involved in evolution.I hope you enjoy this book like I did, and take out of it as much of the genetics you can understand on your own, like me.

Only for beginners
Think of this as being a very basic high-school book. It is not bad but it only covers the most fundamental stuff. So, it does an OK job (but not great) of covering the basic vocabulary in genetics: allele, codon, DNA, gene, wild-type, etc. but it has nothing on many topics that are needed to understand modern genetics or the bioinformatics for genetics. If you need to know about SNPs, microarrays and gene expression methods you will need to supplement it with other sources. If you are trying to refresh your memory on that genetics class you had 20 years ago (like me) it is a good place to start but it is only a start.

I would give it 4 stars if the answer key at the back was 100% accurate but sadly it is not.
