Book Description
This best-selling atlas contains over 900 images and illustrations to help you learn and review the microstructure of human tissues. The book starts with a section on general cell structure and replication. Basic tissue types are covered in the following section, and the third section presents the microstructures of each of the major body systems. The highest -quality color light micrographs and electron micrograph images are accompanied by concise text and captions which explain the appearance, function, and clinical significance of each image. The accompanying website lets you view all the images from the atlas with a "virtual microscope", allowing you to view the image at a variety of pre-set magnifications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wheater's Histology
Basic histology isn't the most thrilling of topics, but this book makes it a little less painful.Excellent quality images and easy-to-digest commentary make this text a good supplement to any histology or physiology course.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent atlas
If you're taking a histo course, this is a fabulous atlas. Everyone at my school buys it, it has clearly labelled photographs of slides as well as very neat diagrams explaining how certain things work. Includes electron micrographs of cells for which EM's are helpful. Very very good book, I highly recommend it, it helps alot.

2-0 out of 5 stars A text and an atlas...good at neither
This text tries to be both a text and an atlas in one and is unfortunately good at neither one.The text is very very basic and lacking in detail. The sections are poorly stained, out of focus and do not clearly demonstrate the structures. The pictures are small and of poor quality.Considering the price, I would recommend spending the extra 30-40 bucks and buy Gartner and Hiatt for an atlas and Junquera for a text instead of paying for this text.

2-0 out of 5 stars !!!!
This book is good but not for beginers or medical students. it's complicated and packed with information, that might not be so important for students.
doesn't have any clinical correlations. i'd suggest the Basic histology book:text and atlas, rather than this one

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for my histology class
I am a medical student and found this textbook very helpful because it was well-organized and full of important information. It's very thorough and complete with great pictures. Also, this book will always serve as a great reference in years to come.My study group and I also used the following which is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (isbn: 0971999686)The questions in the second book were of similar type to the tests in our medical histology class. In fact, we were recommended the second book from our friends at another med school and they found it quite helpful. It goes to show they were right, we all got A's and B's by using these two books. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars First year med student
I have used many of the BRS books for class (the physio one is great!), but this one I found to be confusing and disorganized. It was not pertinent to the material covered on the USMLE or in microbio.I would probably recommend finding another book to study with (in our school we studied more hitsology than cell bio, so it depends on your curriculum).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for class- too long for the Boards
If you are a starting MS1 this is a good book to use for class as it has alot of good detail condensed in an outline format. It comes with a CD that has been quite helpful. However, when it comes to the Boards is just too big of a book for a subject that is not high yield- think about it- this book is just as big as BRS Path. Do you really have that much time to read a low yield subject? No. So instead for Histo- I recommend using a smaller book to review for the boards: I recommedRoad Maps: Histo as opposed to High Yield Histo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for histology class and USLME
I used this book and the following which is also on Amazon.com:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers.
The first book was written well and was quite helpful in preparing me for my histology exams in med school.Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) was so on target with the kind of questions asked on my histology exams in med school. It also proved to be helpful for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1.It goes to show since I got excellent grades in my histology class and on my USLME.I gave my friends both of these books to study from for class exams and for the boards, and they all passed the first time.My advice is to get both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for USLME
I found the information in this book pretty on target for the topics that are needed for the histology portion USLME 1.This book is a very good reference because it helped me summarize the info better in a much shorter fashion than just going back to a long textbook. If you really want to know the type of questions asked on the USLME step 1, I highly recommend the following that is also on amazon.Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) This two study guides are must buys. There are both worth the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lack of communication and shipped exactly on due date
The book came in good conditions as expected, but although I was writing the seller to ask whether the book was sent, I NEVER got a reply...I received the book by the due date, meaning that I paid for a faster shipping thinking that I would get my book faster, and yet it took as long as ground shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars i love this book
Easy to read, interesting, good tables and charts, to the point, reader friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars good buy
Very helpful with great pictures. This book simplifies the material even for those that have never taken a course in histology.Great investment since many universities as well as medical and dental schools use this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars For a medical student, not a bad book.
One's opinion on this book depends your purpose. This is not a comprehensive histology text, nor is it an atlas of histology.Graduate students in anatomy or histology will be disappointed.

BUT, for a medical student this book used in conjunction with an atlas is pretty good. The book reads well, has "ok" pictures, and sufficient detail for medical school histology courses.I found this book used with the DiFore's histology atlas to be sufficient.I preferred this over Wheater's book, but others in my class did use the Wheater book.

Overall, I would recommend this book to be used along with a histology atlas such as DiFore, for medical school histology.

Histology is barely present on USMLE, so don't waste your time buying this book for board review unless you just can't remember anything from histology.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best BASIC Histology book
For sure this is the best BASIC Histology book ever...if you do want some deep treatment about the topic, go search another book...but for what it intends to discuss (the basic concepts of human body tissues science), the book is explendid. Please, DO NOT compare this book with a non basic book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text
This is an excellent text for medical histology. I have read this book cover to cover twice and highlighted the heck out of it. My opinion is that if you know this book, you will know general medical histology. At times the material is much more detailed than you will need to get through your Histo course, but it is well worth it for developing a greater depth of understanding. The book has excellent microphotographs and illustrations throughout, so you won't be left wanting when the text gets really dense. Be forewarned though, this book has numerous errors. Most of them are small (like typesetting, spelling, and figure labels) but others are more fundamental mis-statements (or perhaps misleading statements) about molecular mechanisms and processes. These problems do not take away from the value of the text however, since the more significant errors are usually in the minutia and may just be a product of the publication lagging behind our evolving understanding of different processes. I would definitely buy and read this book again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid histology reference and study guide
This text has been helpful while studying cell biology and histology in medical school. The images and accompanying text are both high quality.I think that it could be improved in some instances by adding more electron microscopy images along with the light microscopy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Histology book that I've found.
This Histology book is the most thorough and well-written text out there. If you have no background in Histology, this book can be quite intimidating because it is content-rich. I was very overwhelmed when I first started with this book for undergrad, but now that I have gotten through it and read other titles for med school, I believe that this book is the best. It teaches Histology in a way that prepares you to be a real pathologist, using mostly light micrographs and tons of clinical correlations. Other Histology texts (e.g. Color Textbook of Histology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access) treat the subject as a general learning tool rather than as a core component of your potential specialty. They use more (and less-detailed) illustrations and electron micrographs with fewer clinical correlations and light micrographs.

Still, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this book to medical students if the book was not already required. It is probably more detailed than any medical school Histology course will be, and as a med student, your time is everything! Your time will probably be better spent in gross. Still, if you know that pathology is something you are interested in, this book is a great introduction to Histology and will better prepare you for your career than any other text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Histology: too much text
I agree with the first and second review. I use this book as a reference for hard-to-understand concepts. As a first year med student, however, I never really have time to refer to it because it is too content-dense. I would prefer a book with more pictures; perhaps just a picture section with pointers on important points.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for usmle prep
This is not a typical histology book...in the sense that it contains, pharmacology, pathology, physiology and anatomy and very little histology and histopathology. The book is extremely HIGH YIELD for usmle but not for a class in histology. It covers topics ranging molecular biology of signal transduction to the coagulation cascade. First year medical students will not recognize much of the info in this book and think it is "fluff"....it is one of the best kept secrets to scoring high in the USMLE, since many of the questions aren't exactly pathology or physiology stand alone questions, rather they are a mixture and a blend of many subjects. This book does that for you, it integrates many..many concepts. Its a great buy for 2nd years.

3-0 out of 5 stars not so hot
this book is missing alot of information, especially if you are trying to use it for a course review. Some examples: no parotid, no tounge, no esophagus, no pineal, no tonsils. Also the figure captions are hard to read and the quality of the figures is only so so. All in all, not the greatest histology review book.

3-0 out of 5 stars You could probably do without this book
If you use First Aid for the the USMLE Step 1, you probably will not use this book. There is a lot of "low yield" information disperese throughout and it may not save you much time to filter through all of it to make it worth while. If you insist, read through it fast and note the clinically significant items in boldface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, must buy
I used this book and the following which is also on amazon: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
The first book is written in an easy style to make histology much easier to absorb for medical histology.I found this book to be righton for the topics I needed to know for my medical histology test.I also like how the material was presented; it was reader friendly and a very thorough review. The second book that I used for my medical histology class called:Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi was so on target with the type of questions asked on my histology exams.I highly recommend these two books to any medical histology students.I also wish I used these books when I took histology in undergrad.Anyway, I have brothers and sisters who have used these two books in other medical school histology classes and they got A's .Both books are must buys.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a comprehensive guide to histology
This book was required for one of my classes. My only complaint is that it doesn't have enough slides to get to know histology.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice supplement
Good book to have to supplement the Basic Histology Text and Atlas by Luiz Carlos Junqueira.Provides brief explainations and more pictures to assist you with identifying things under the microscope.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good review book for a medical student
I found the book nicely edited, the illustrations were priceless and contained lots of information. The theoretical content of the book though cannot be compared with Ross, this is why it can be used only as a review book. The main quality of the book is in its illustrations and images, which are truly excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great atlas for histology

Book Description
diFiore's Atlas of Histology with Functional Correlations, Eleventh Edition, explains basic histology concepts through full-color, schematic illustrations. These illustrations are supplemented by more than 450 digitized full-color online photomicrographs of histological images. Part One explains tissues and their relationship to their systems; Part Two addresses organs in a similar way. Targeting undergraduate, allied health and first and second year medical students, the 11th Edition includes new and enhanced images through redrawing and digitization to provide increased detail. This edition also features updated illustrations and information on the functions of cells, tissues, and organs of the body based on advances in research and expert recommendations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas of Histology with Functional correlations
The book is an excellent source of information and my friends and I loved using it with our class projects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons...
I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this. There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.

Other people in my medical school class used the wheater book, gartner, or strete and seemed happy. There were a few instances where I would have preferred to see a photograph instead of a drawing, but overall I was very happy with this book and would use it again. This book was particularly helpful in the "lab" portion of histology when identifying cells and tissue structures on slides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to start your medical career
I'm a 2nd year medical student as of April 2006.

This book helped me a lot to put the whole picture togather.I even refer back to this book when reviewing for pathology.

The book title says it all...Histology pictures with functional correlations. All the body organ system presented with very good slide view pictures, which are all labeled + text explaining the labels and functional aspects of all the labels. This book helped me connect all the body organs.

I highly recommend this book for basic science histology class.Start your medical career right w/ choosing the right books and this is one of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars HELPFUL
This text was helpful in learning the histology of each section. I would highly recommend it to anybody who wanted some extra help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
Hello, Im a Med student and became a Histology lover during my course. I own several Histo books and I have to say that I have read them all. So I have used this Atlas to "supplement" my Ross and my Wheater's and my 2-3 others, just for fun.
Regarding to this Atlas, and this is JUST an Atlas, I have to saythat in my humble opinion it doesn't worth the buy if you intend to reach a somewhat decent level in this course. I dont want to discourage anyone from buying it, after all I have also bought it, but not everyone is willing to spend money on UNNEEDED books. I have seen a lot of people using it, and may be it did saved some "lives" but there are lots of better Histo books out there guys. The picture quality is moderate, the text is too much simplified (and I am not a native English speaker!)If you want a concise book my pick would be Wheater's, and if you want a thorough one, I would choose the Ross. For an Atlas I would go for the "Color Atlas of Histology" by Gartner. And generally speaking, if you go JUST for Ross, you will not need any other book.
I give this book a generous mark of three stars and add one if I heart someones feelings and hope that it was helpfull. ... Read more

Book Description
Now completely revised and updated, this ground-breaking text focuses on the borderland between histology and pathology. The text describes human histology and its variations, with emphasis on avoiding overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of normal variants. Presented by leading international specialists in pathology, histopathology, anatomical pathology, surgical pathology, and neuropathology, the text is innovative, well organized and generously illustrated. Coverage includes the structure, composition, and function of tissues from a pathologic perspective; a systematic review of each major organ system, as well as structures of special significance; andhistologic subtleties, such as unusual variations in staining reactions, little-known fixation artifacts, and frequently missed gross observations. This edition is reorganized to better reflect an organ-system approach to histology. Immunohistochemical findings in normal tissues have been added, based on the latest antibody panels. This book is actually (for those of you who haven't worked it out) the latest edition of that wonderful book first edited by Sternberg, entitled "Histology for Pathologists". It is an excellent reference book and I consider it to be essential reading for all trainee tissue pathologists. It is well set out and written in a fluid style. If you are thinking of buying it, just jump in and do it. You won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best tool for Medicine Students and First year Pathology residents
Im very pleased with my purchase and with the service provided by amazon. I'm really amazed.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource for under 200$
You are looking for a histology resource, probably as a pathologist or pathology resident. With a little modification, the third and updated edition of histology for pathologists may be the thing for you (if you have some time to read and tweak).
If you are looking for a "fast and furious" review, combine the histology sections of each chapter of Robbins and Rosai. However, if you really like histology - or feel that the knowledge of normal anatomy is the foundation to diagnose diseases, a more indepth review is required.
But: does histology change? or will the second edition do it?
The new version is really updated with many new color pictures and excellent makeover of the "not so colorfull" pictures in the older version. The main organ system structures stays the same and the apoptosis chapter from the 2nd edition is integrated in the different systems by site. All tables show a new, colored layout and even the myofibroblast chapter shines with multichannel immunohistochemistry. The big bonus is the included CD-Rom with almost all pictures from the book (including line-drawings).A nice option of the CD is to search by key-word (eg. endomterium pops up all figures with endometrium in the legend - a very nice feature) and all pictures can be downloaded for presentations. Two new figures about the sampling of the conduction system integrate gross sampling and histologic examination.
Summary - it's worth 160.
Now the tweaking.If you really want the ultimate resource you would have to go to the library, get the 2nd edition and copy/add the following pages/figures: Fig11.2, 86.2, 159.22, 259.23 293.7, 299.12, 306.19, 338.5, 340.6, 343, 345, 361, 362, 364, 435, 441, 533, 534, 664, 676, 684, 776, 800, 801, 802, 803, 827, 828, 1061 and 1134.Most of these are either classic figures not incorporated or modified in the new edition; some are simply better in black and white; and some are just old-school but still cool.
As a result you have a very complete histology text/atlas with updated references and a personal touch.

There are approximately 189 atlas plates, and over 70 new illustrations. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This book was suggested to me by my University as part of the Histology curriculum of the General Med. program. It took me quite a while to understand that this is probably the best histology book there is, and I have 3 other books to prove it..

Some may find it diffucult to digest at the beginning, the middle and the end, like I had, but now I understand that Histology as a subject is hard and nothing more.
For a medical student there are other books out there, may be more consice and with more graphics, but if you want to excell in your Histo class, this is the book. Ross doesnt neglect anything! I found the illustrations sufficient and accompanied by short summaries of what was already mentioned and not mentioned in the text. They were exellent as a review of the material.
For those who find the graphics insufficient I would suggest buying an Atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Text, Needs more diagrams
This is a good histology text to read and understand. It has not only structural descriptions, but has related physiology and this makes the book interesting to read. With mastering histology in the first year of the medical school, pathology would be easy to learn in the future. This book makes histology a more interesting subject.
Advantages:
1.Lucid style in writing
2.Sentence type headings makes the essence of the following text very clear.
3.Most of the details that you need in the histology course could be found in this single volume.
4.Atlas is separately included in the end of every chapter other than the regular diagrams between the texts.
Disadvantages:
1.Lack of line diagrams- without a good number of line diagrams it would be difficult to grasp the material for a normal student like me.
2.No clear chapter outline in the beginning of each chapter. The Wheater's histology has an edge over this in this aspect.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I really felt that this text could have given a little more. You will need to buy an atlas to supplement the text, but I do like the explanations given with the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for my medical histology class
I found this book very helpful and packed with good info on histology. This book is quite thorough and is essential for any medical student taking a class in histology. The pictures are quite helpful because it was easier to identify simple epithelia verses squamous epithelia as one example. If you want a great study guide for the type of questions teachers ask get the following: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN; 0971999686)
The last book helped me to focus on the type of questions asked on my exams.I was recommended this book from a few friends who have already taken the class. They said it helped them get good grades.I guess they were right. With the help of these two books I did wonderfully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I liked the book very much for it has Histology with some Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology included. Of course these text takes space from the book and reduces the amount of slides but each slide is given similar information and not just identification. Time to time comparative information. I found this book very useful when compared to simple Histology Atlases. You may need another Histology Atlas for more pictures if you are interested but this book is very simple and to the point all encompassing ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than BRS or High Yield for quick review!
I used this book as an MS1 and it got me through class- now I am going back and using it for a quick read in my Board review. Although I haven't taken the Boards yet, I believe this is the book to have for this subject. I also own the High Yield Histo but it lacks detail and BRS is way too thick to go through it for reviewing a low yield subject like Histo.
If you do have the time BRS would be better but if you are like me and running out time fast- then stick to Road Maps

4-0 out of 5 stars I like the clinical correlations.
I haven't finished reading this book, yet. And I haven't taken the step 1 exam, either. However, I really like this book. So I will write a brief review now. Be the first that I can be. ;)

The best part about the road map books is that it has clinical correlations. And I am surprised that there can be so many clinical correlations from the beginning of the first charpter. It is like a short review for pathology at the same time. And because of that, it made reading much more interesting than just reading basic concepts which can get boring quickly. I also like the format and wording. I just finished reading the high yield immunology, that one was so hard to read because those two authors tend to write long sentences without any coommas. This author's wording is short and easy to understand.

One thing that this book needs to improve is to get more pictures. After all, it is a histology book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a great book, but the diagrams are good
Let me begin by pointing out that the diagrams in ths book are worth far more than the text.In fact there is probably more text captioning and labeling the diagrams than in the body of the text itself. The downside is that somethings shown in diagrams are simply not at all mentioned in the text, so ii you use a textbook for the text contained within (or because you were told that you had to buy it), and look at the pictures only to understand what is written in the text, you will probably miss some important points.I recommend studying this book only after you have developed some familiarity with the basics of histology, then you can go through the diagrams of this book to clarify or reinforce your knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must have for Histology
This book is a wonderful resource for anyone that is in histology!Unlike other books, it does a great job of illustrating identifying characteristics of certian cells and tissues. It is very well written and easy to follow, but it is not an oversimplification or dumbed down at all.It is simply a great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures Really are Worth a Thousand Words!
Having taken this class with Dr. Kierszenbaum at his school, i know how much histology can focus on what seems like minute details, such as little blue and purple dots in microscopes. Fortunately. Dr. Kierszenbaum's textbook, which is being released in its second edition in January 2007, is filled with loads of great pictures. The text is decent, and at least for me, it took a long time just to get through a single chapter. Once that's done, though, the pictures are all you need for review. Although it depends on the style of your histology class, Dr. Kierszenbaum's book should be a good, colorful read for many students.

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant text by brilliant professor
I actually had the privilege of attending the medical school Dr. Kierszenbaum lectures at. He is exceptionally brilliant in that he knows how to present material so that it can be properly learned. This text has extensive figures and diagrams which are crucial for the mastery of histology. After you have read the book you can quickly review it by going over the figures which highlight the important facts pertaining to the material. Throughout the text important clinical diseases are addressed so that a correlation between cell function and dysfunction can be made. An absolutely thorough book by a great individual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for histology students
I would recommend this book for anyone taking histology in medical school or undergrad.I am a med student and found this book much easier to learn from compared to other textbooks I have read. The author writes in a fashion that enhances learning. The pictures are also very good and helped me to further visualize the types of epithlia.I studied from the following which is also on amazon.com:

This second book was so amazing because it had the kind of questions I saw on my histology exams. My study group and I used both these books and we all passed with ease and with less study time.Time is money. It's better to invest in a couple of excellent books than to take a $2500 class all over again.I give both books 6 stars!!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful study tool
My professor had recommended this text, though did not require it for her histo class. I found it extremely helpful in studying for lab exams outside of class, but it wasn't very helpful in learning about cell types that we hadn't discussed in lecture first. An overall helpful study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas
I'm a med student and found this atlas to be a great source for studying for the my class exams. The pictures are great and it makes the facts easier to learn.Squamous cell epithelium never looked so good.I also used the following:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me with test preparation because it showed me what to focus on and the type of questions that were asked on my tests.I highly recommend both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent atlas.
I found the color atlas to be extremely helpful. The images are very clear and structures are labeled. It's a useful guide for medical students new to histology.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a the name says just an atlas
You need to know from other sources to understand the pictures.
Quality of the paper and pictures are good but unfortunately there is hardly any explanation what they are, what the functions are. It is not just because they run out of space, one side of the page is generally empty. I guess it is the concept that needs to be changed. Yes pictures are worth tousands of words but it would be much nices with some talk.Book is divided into systems. Book is also missing a short introduction that could have been very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Atlas Available
I've done a lot of searching into histo atlases. This one has the bestphotographs of all I saw. They are untouched by artwork like otheratlases. They are the real thing, which I think is important for futurepractice with the microscope. There are two problems with this atlas. First, although the photographs are organized quite logically, there is noboldface title above each one.It is annoying when you are browsing thebook.I remedied this by writing in my own titles, but it would be SO muchnicer. The second thing is there is no histological information containedwith the photos. There are only small description boxes next to each. Unfortunately to my knowledge there is no such thing as a histology atlasthat has high-yield histo information included.I think if the company whomade this atlas adds high-yield info the resulting book would be used byevery medical student in the country. What's ironic is there is so muchwhite space in this atlas. It's as if the publisher intended to add ininfo boxes, but never got around to it.All we need are small bites ofinfo like exists in the High-Yield series with the beautiful photos in thisatlas.

If you are the publishers of this book, heed my advice and you'llmake a fortune.Medical students like to have everything wrapped up inneat little packages instead of cross-references several sources. It makesstudying so much easier. ... Read more
