Students who study with the ATLAS OF FUNCTIONAL HISTOLOGY obtain the most lifelike learning of tissues and organs. It features 600 realistic color histology sections and 150 electron micrographs. Each figure has a detailed caption outlining the structures and their function to the system or body as a whole. The book is organized by body system, each chapter beginning with an introduction of that system and its function. To help students assess their skills, a unique self-testing section asks them to differentiate between tissues of similar appearance through the use of multiple choice questions. Detailed rationale on each option of the multiple-choice questions helps them understand the differences in function of similar looking tissue. After using the atlas, students will be able to quickly and correctly identify histology sections and discuss the structures in relation to body function. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentPhotographic Study Guide!
I bought this book for my Embriology and Histology class in Dental School as a photographic study guide to better prepare myself for the laboratory exam of identifying tissue samples through a microscope. My professor liked this book so much than the one he was required to use to teach the course with that he requested a copy of this book for the library and to add it to the course's list of recommended reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent atlas for histology
I found this atlas very helpful for my histology class in med school. The pictures make histology a lot easier to understand. It also gives you an edge in the lab portion of the class.I also highly recommend the following: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686
The second book helped me to evaluate the type of questions to prepare for in my histology exams. In other words, get both books because they are very helpful for any med student taking histology. I got an A- with the help of these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Histology made easy
Finally a book that encompases the two facets of histology in equalproportions. The Atlas of Functional Histology not only has brilliantvisual aspects, but moreover, it also ties in essential written commentarywhich more than complements. The picture quality is second to none whichmakes buying this text an easy decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning the easy way and enjoying it...
When I first opened this book, I was really overwelmed on how the pictures showed such detail. With such a subject, the author made it simple and precise easy enough to understand. I have learned a great deal from this book and it has helped me recap on some old things that I have forgotten.Even co-workers want a copy of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for transcriptionists
As stated by the other reviewer, yes, this is a list of words. That's why its title says "Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Words."If it were to include definitions, it would be a dictionary, not just a word book.

As such, it excels.I rate it less than 5 stars only because there are several other Stedman's books that I use on an almost daily basis while this one doesn't come in handy quite as often; however, for such necessary items as microorganisms and lab abbrevations this is indispensible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Most Poorly Written Book Ever
I don't what's wrong with the rest of you given saying this book is the best ever.Obviously, you have never read it.This book is the most poorly written text I have ever read.It mentions one thing and continues to explain it three pages later. It contradicts itself and is overly verbose.Often times, it is too confusing to follow the logic of the text.Whoever wrote this book should re-evaluate the people it is directed towards and rewrite it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy, outstanding textbook
This book is simply excellent. It has great pictures and it helped my with my histology class in med school. It is easy to read and it makes histology a lot more interesting and fun to learn. It also cut some of my study time since it is not filled with unnecessay information---it gets right to the point. My study group and I also used the following that is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686
The second book was quite revealing with the kind of questions we saw on our histology exams. We all got B's and A's after using both these books. In addition, both these books helped me on the USLME 1.I would definietly get these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars This has the potential to be a fine book....
...just as soon as it comes out in the 3rd edition, assuming that the authors get a substantial amount of in-depth reviewing help in getting the bugs ironed out of it before then.

I've been using this book for a Microanatomy course in medical school.I liked this book initially, but there have been more than a couple of occasions where I've had to go to other sources for explanations of material that should have been clearer in the text. Also, based on errors and contradictions with other sources I've found so far, I've since come to believe that one can believe maybe 96-98% of the information printed in it. Perhaps the authors just 'winged it' now and then or maybe one or the other had senior moments (Hiatt is retired) and 'remembered' a few too many details to be true which unfortunately aren't.Regardless, if you're not already conversant with the subject and aren't comparing what you read here to what you glean elsewhere, good luck in figuring out what's accurate and what isn't.

It's still too early for me to have a really strong opinion of the competition, but based on G&H's relatively poor treatment of odontogenesis (tooth development), I was inspired to pick up the excellent-looking new (4th) edition of Ross, Kaye, and Pawlina's"Histology - A Text And Atlas".Their diagrams and coverage (for this subject area at least) are also not only more readable, but also more comprehensive. (This is particularly ironic, given that Gartner and Hiatt both hail from a school of dentistry.) Also, unlike G&H's text, Ross et al's latest effort *is* usable as a histology atlas (in my non-expert opinion at least), which helps greatly when one needs to know not only how things work but also what they look like. Given that the Ross book is also well written, G&H's effort is left with precious little to recommend it. Admittedly this is but one subject area among many so it's too early to say for sure, but for now at least Ross et al seem to have produced the clear winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Text for Beginners
Coming from a social science background rather than one in biology, I found this book a lifesaver first year. The photos are great and the diagrams extremely helpful. I replaced the required Junquira, which I found unreadable, with Gartner and Hiatt!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Textbook of Histology
This book is really one of the best textbooks of Histology I have ever seen and if you exclude (NMS Histology, concise and not well illustrated ) ,you won't find (as a medical student) such a comprehensive, organised, well illustrated textbook of Histology. However, you will need to buy a good atlas of Histology along with the book simply because the book is not an atlas. One of the features that I liked very much in the book is the simple coloured hand-drawn pictures which simplify the real microscopic slides very much and make them easier to understand and to draw. Another feature is that the book along with the histology text has also physiology, gross anatomy notes as well as clinical correlations in an integrated way so that you do not need to refer to other textbooks in Anatomy and physiology to correlate it with histology text. During my histology course , I did not need to refer any other book in histology (except to NMS Histology to some bits which I did not find detailed info about it in the book). It is really good book and I recommend to you as a textbook and reference (Especially if your course involves detailed knowledge about the material). ... Before the pictures, the book gives you a very useful and brief chapter introduction. It also has a detailed glossary containing nearly 750 words. A necesary book for a veterinary student. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great histology book!
I recommend this book both to medical students who are studying histology for the first time and to doctors. I, as a pathology resident, found this book very helpful for studying the normal structure of organs because of its great pictures (including special stains and electron microscopy) and its easy-to-understand yet detailed text. Also the clinical, physiological and cell biological correlations (presented as text boxes throughout the book) help you a lot in getting a more clear picture about the presented organ or tissue.

This is a very well produced book wilth many illustrations which make histology, a topic I've taught but never mastered, make more sense. While the book is very approachable, it is still very much in-depth and if you are looking for a more introductory text, you may want to consider getting an atlas to begin. However, medical and graduate students would do very well with this text since it bridges the molecular mechanisms active in cells to the microscopic structure of tissues and organs. It also brings the microscopic structure and function into view regarding the gross anatomical perspective as well, giving a top-to-bottom appraisal of histology. This would have been a five-star rating if only the pages were not so whispy that my highlighter bled through to the other side of the page repeatedly.Students, buy this book with confidence, but underline rather than highlight!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This is the best histology book I have seen. Good for molecular biology researchers as well-better then many standard textbooks. Very good discussions of development of cell types as well as structural histology.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like histology and this book
The photos are very good in this book. If you are taking histology I do recommend this one. This is a complete text. Each subject area is expertly done (example)muscle tissue, bone, skin etc.
If you want also a great studying tool to help you prepare for your exams, I recommend HISTOLOGY STUDY GUIDE: KEY REVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS author Patrick Leonardi. This helped me!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful.
I used this book as a first year medical student. It's just terrible. I have three main issues. First, the language is vague, confusing, and terminology is not consistent within the book. Second, the authors are single-handedly attempting to change medical terminology. As a med student, I couldn't care less about semantic battles of anatomists. All I want is the words defined AS THEY WILL BE USED ON BOARD EXAMS. This book does NOT provide that; instead, early in chapters, it says 'Older books (that is, every textbook ever published except this one) may use the word X, but we prefer the word Y because blah blah blah. So every time you see Y, mentally substitute X if you ever want to communicate with other people or read scientific literature.
And speaking of scientific literature, the authors apparently don't read it. There are multiple areas of questionable scientific validity and just plain misleading content-I know because I used several histology texts throughout, due to this one being so vague and simplistic.
The best text that I used was Histology: A text and atlas by Ross, 4th ed. Ross and Stevens directly contradict each other on many details, though, so if Stevens is used in your class, Ross won't help you pass your tests. It will, however, help for Boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for making histology easier to learn!!!
I'm a med student and found this text right enjoyable and an alternative easier to text to learning histology. The pictures are quite detailed, which is important especially for histology lab exams. The organ systems are explained in a clear matter without extremely hard vocabulary to understand. This text does what it is supposed to do, which is to teach.I also found the Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686 very good in helping me prepare for my medical exams in histology class.I highly recommend both books.

3-0 out of 5 stars More funny than useful
I bought this recommended book for my Histology class at the University of Copenhagen. At first it was fun to read the authors' dedication of the book to different winemakers, but eventually I grew tired of the endless joking around. The actual core text is not very in-depth but the illustrautions are beautiful, thus the mediocre rating. And another thing, the book is useless when it comes to the central nervous system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whatan awful book!
This may seem quite strange but it is true.Reading this book i was totally terrified that histology could bea dificult and demanding task to deal with. But to my own surprise, i surpassed thisobstracle with the help of another totally unknown book called " Basic Histology" by Adonis Kalligaropoulos.I recommend it to you if you want to acquire a clear and simple idea of histology and take an A in your exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and easy reading
I think thisbook is one of the best in the market. The information is straight forward and easy to read. Everything in this book is very well organised. ... Read more

    Book Description
The purpose of this book is twofold: The concise presentation in outlineformat enables the student initially to gain an overview of histology andlater to review the discipline. This is particularly important in today'sbiomedical curriculum because of the reduction in time devoted to basicsciences and the dispersal of specific disciplinary materials intoevolving, nontraditional curricula. Second, the inclusion of approximately 300 study questions, and integration of their answers with the text, enables the student to review histology, in a timely and efficient manner, in the context of licensing and other comprehensive examinations. ...
