5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Hello I am A Physician from South America, this book is excellent for USMLE step 1, it has great images and is well organized...

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I am a second year medical student. I disagree with the previous poster. This book is incredibly well written and clinically relevant, especially to the USMLE. This book integrates alot of the molecular biology that is showing up frequently on the usmle. If you like the style of the rapid review series...this will fit you.

And to the previous poster, ideally we would all be using "TEXTS" to study for the usmle. You can't compare review books with major texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor!
I am a freshman medical student at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. If there is one thing that I can do for my colleauges is to wave ared flag and tell you NOT to buy this book. Firstly, the organization isextremely poor. Secondly, some information is inaccurate and/or outdated. Finally, the material is obviously condensed from a superior text onHistology by Gartner & Hyatt. Although, G&H is more expensive, itis well worth your money. The two color illustrations are also"modified from" other texts. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This text provides a thorough and current treatment of the structure, organization and function of the basic tissue types of the body as well as the organ systems which are organized from the basic tissues. The text presents a more modern, cell biological emphasis on the subject, while also bringing out the clinical correlations of histology in every chapter. Text material is frequently summarized in the many charts, tables and diagrams that are distributed throughout the book.

The book is written for medical and dental students as well as other professionals who are introduced to histology during their first year of professional schooling. It is also intended to serve the needs of advanced undergraduates who often take such courses in preparation for professional schools.

Basic Medical Histology contains limited amounts of biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology and neurobiology, but a sufficient amount of material so that the student can correlate functional information to the microscopic organization of tissues and organs. Since the student who first encounters histology is typically introduced to a large body of information in a limited time period, the authors maximize the rapid transfer of information by the extensive use of summary type tables, charts and drawings. In addition, a central portion of the book contains a limited number of color illustrations which will permit the student to view and recognize stained sections of tissues and organs. The color atlas should facilitate the student's view of laboratory work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for histology students
This book gives great explanations on the differences between specific types of epithelium. The pictures in this book facilitate learning at an easier level. In this way, I found this book to be a great help in my medical histology class. My study partner and I also used the following which is on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide was great because it showed us all the possible kinds of questions that could be asked on our medical histology exams. We both got very high grades with the help of these 2 books.Sometimes simplifying information the way these two book succeed in doing, can even make histology easy to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Medical Histology
Kessel's Basic Medical Histology is much more than an overview of the microscopic structure of the human body. Yes, as one should expect, he examines all of the various cell structures, cell types and tissues. The descriptions of the microscopic structure are supported by both diagrams and color photomicrographs. However, the best part of this book is the range of transmission and scanning electron micrographs illustrating the ultrastructure of human cells and cell associations. These figures along with line drawings act as a foundation for the author's discussion of many important physiological processes that occur at the molecular and microscopic levels. This book is a valuable resource for students heading toward a clinical profession and interested in understanding the fundamental physiological activities in the human body. ... Read more

Product Description
This magnificent atlas of human microanatomy was designed to help histology students understand the complex structures they encounter when viewing microscopic sections of tissues. It is designed to bridge the gap between textbook diagrams and the complex reality of histological preparations. Instead of simply depicting an individual section, each drawing is a compilation of the key structures and features seen in many preparations from similar tissues or organs. The atlas will be invaluable to students in a range of life science and medical disciplines, including human and veterinary medicine, dentistry, mammalian biology, pharmacy, and nursing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Histology Atlas for Medical Students
I was one of the people asked to review this book by the publisher prior to its acceptance for publication. I found it to be an excellent atlas of histology based on detailed drawings rather than on photomicrographs. Drawings provide an idealized view of histologic materials that actual micrographs cannot usually display. While some instructors prefer actual photographic micrographs I find that drawings often offer the student a better understanding and help in identifying anatomic detail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book
many years after i bought it, i read it again from 1st to last page. i find it is a wonderful book: simple, logic, easy to read/understand, cover so many important things in pathology. highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars life saver
This book is what saved my life in the pathology, microbiology and immunology course at my med school. The book put all the histopathology which was very dense and made unnecessarily complicated by the lecturers and the Robbins PBOD book in a very logical way. It has great micrographs with thorough text accompanying them and is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer of pathology
If you agree that seeing is believing, then this book is for you. Microscopic images with accompanying texts illustrate important concepts and salient features of common diseases. The language is clear and facts are presented concisely. I particularly loved the part on general pathology : it contains one of the most beautifully written summaries of the recurring themes in pathology...i.e. cell injury, necrosis, adative response, neoplasia, inflammation, thrombosis etc. Read, re-read and re-read the first few chapters of this book, so that those concepts get stuck in your brain. Once that's mastered, you'll have little difficulty facing systems pathology.
Unfortuantely, no book is perfect... this one has no gross/macro pictures, and the texts while perfectly summarised, are not enough to get you thru the boards or other path exams. If you're looking for uncommon or esoteric stuff, search elsewhere.
Nevertheless, I would call this the perfect primer of pathology, and an essential companion to the bigger textbooks.
Buy it if you really want to UNDERSTAND and APPRECIATE pathology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The format of Essential Human Histology departs considerably from that of the usual presentations on human tissue/organ biology. This presentation was not designed as a formal reference textbook but as a tool solely for students and is designed for rapid student learning as well as rapid review in preparation for USMLE examinations. Essential Human Histology focuses the beginning student’s attention on the most important aspects of this discipline which are presented as a series of learning units. In general, the text follows the traditional and logical sequence of cells to tissues to organs, but within this sequence, the discussion on mitosis is presented immediately after the cell and discussion on meiosis just prior to a consideration of the reproductive systems. To understand human structural biology, it is essential to learn a specialized vocabulary and to assimilate a large body of facts. Learning, as distinct from memorization, depends to a great degree on repetition and reinforcement and is made easier if the material to be learned can be presented in discrete, manageable segments. The format of Essential Human Histology is designed specifically to meet these requirements and, if used properly, will enable the student to master this knowledge quickly and efficiently.Use of this Textbook: The subject matter is broken down into small learning units, each of which is introduced by a vocabulary appropriate to that unit. The vocabulary introduces the main features of the subject to be discussed and provides the basic vocabulary for that unit. As each segment is read, note the vocabulary words (identified by bold print) in the text and how they contribute to the discussion. After completing the narrative segment, return to the vocabulary words, using them as prompts to recall the details of the material just read. The vocabulary serves as a summary of the topic and provides a means for rapid review. If a vocabulary word fails to prompt a response, it and the associated text can be found quickly from the bold type in the appropriate segment.A segment entitled either Histogenesis or Organogenesis provides an introduction into the development of each tissue and/or organ and provides another means of reinforcement that contributes to an overall understanding of the tissue or organ being considered.Summaries briefly outline the structural/functional relationships and serve to draw the information together and to provide an additional review of the topic.During preparation of Essential Human Histology, three major considerations were kept in mind: (1) most curricula place considerable time constraints on the student; (2) function and structure are inextricably related; and (3) the learning process essentially is a matter of repetition and reinforcement. The narrative strives to present the vast amount of information available on this topic, in a concise and logical manner, without sacrificing the detail that is necessary for a basic understanding of human tissue and organ biology. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
This book is a complete waste of money and time. I only bought the book because it was prescribed for a Histology course in preparation for further study into the pathological basis for disease. The text is very often unintelligible and there are far too few details and illustrations. The histophysiology is inadequately described and all the photos and illustrations are in black and white. The CD rom might have been a consolation for the money wasted, but unfortunately many of the photos are out of focus.
I moved on to a human histology textbook. The book by Ross and Pawlina is well written and contains a host of detailed colourful diagrams. It also includes a brilliant CD Rom with exceptional photomicrograps. The plates generally start with an overview of the tissues and then move down to higher magnifications to elucidate the details.
The Veterinary Histology atlas by Bacha is all you need for the species differences. The text in William Banks is unfortunately for the most part outdated. However the book has additional diagrams and photos that are still very useful and relevant.
