5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed
I bought this as a supplement to my Microbiology class and the textbook that was required for the class. This book definitely clarifies things and conveniently organizes the material well. I read this and reference this more than my GIANT textbook! I am very satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!
Put it this way. I finished med-school, Internal Medicine residency and have been a hospitalist for three years. I'm going back to training in Infectious Diseases for a fellowship. I have been through bunch of books in my life and can say that this one is a darn good review of Microbiology. The proper topics have in depth review, but it is not too meticulous that you would get lost in bench research type topics. I'm certainly speaking from a clinicians perspective with ID intentions, but in general I have quite an interest in microbiology. I generally recommend it for sure. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This purchase is very smoothly and the quality of the book is pretty good! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microbiology and Immunology Book
I bought this book for my microbiology course and for review for the boards. Before this book, I read Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. While Ridiculous was an entertaining read, but the silliness kinda got in the way of information and the explanations were generally lacking. This book is well organized and the depth is great.I finally figured out what the A and B subunits on the cholera exotoxin are and the fact that that mechanism is not exclusive to cholera. The immunology chapters in the book are equally as good.Ever have any questions about complement or hypersensitivities?Well there is a chapter dedicated to each (albeit, only 3-5 pages). Finally the appendix is very high yield. There are charts that organize organisms by geographic region, foods for food poisoning, animals, and vectors. There is also a section that has a quick review of all the organisms covered in the book. There's a lot of information, so it might take longer to get through than a rapid review book, but started earlier it should be high yield.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
This is a very good medical micro book for someone who needs a reasonable complete and accessible reference. It's not a definitive micro book. It's not "Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple" either.I find micro really painful as a general rule.I'd never sit down and read this book from cover to cover. That said when I need to know about a particular bug this book generally tells me everything I'd want to know in an organized and understandable fashion. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview book
This book is required for my immunology course, and is a very good, easy-to-understand description of the immune system. It also has much shorter chapters than in most of my other textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to immunology for those with limited time.
Basic Concepts in Immunology was extremely valuable in allowing me to learn the essentials of immunology in a very short period of time. The material was well organized with many figures to help with explanations. By its nature, the depth of information is limited but now I have a goodfoundation to learn more in greater depth from other sources. The indexwas not quite as comprehensive as I would have liked, but the book is shortenough to easily find what you need. For immunology novices, I highlyrecommend reading this book before delving into a detailed textbook. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
This is a HUGE and generally very comprehensive book except there are only two mentions of ME (CFS) en passant. (I do have to give props for those phrases being correct though) ME is a common (1M+ in US) and extremely debilitating NeuroEndocrine Immune Disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than fundamental
This is, undoubtdly, the most complete guide for immunology. It shows all aspects of the issue, including biochemistry and disease context. Futhermore, the interaction between innate response and adaptive response is aborded, once is rarely showed by the other books. I do recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
If you have lot of time to read, yes, this book is a MUST. But if you have 40 exams plus practices plus meetings plus, plus, plus.....Kuby is a good option. Anyway, never trust only in a single book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my grade
This book saved my grade. My professor was using the Kuby book (written from a researcher's point of view) to teach our Immunology class. It made no sense to me.
Then I bought this book (written from a medical provider's point of view) and suddenly everything made sense. The material was exactly the same as we were studying in class, but simply explained better. I kept this book after the class because it's such an awesome reference. I also met Dr. Narin as he guest-lectured some of our classes. He's an awesome guy, and it's no wonder his book is so easy to understand.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in detail
Immunology for Medical Students is a good overall resource but leaves you a little fuzzy about detail and scope.Overarching principles are presented clearly, but the text doesn't elaborate enough on important specifics such as VDJ recombination in lymphocytes and cytokine function. This text is insufficient for the current medical school course I am taking and wouldn't even have been adequate for the undergraduate immunology course I took a few years ago.Janeway's Immunobiology gives you a much better understanding of the topics, though it does probably go too far to the other side in providing detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent immunology book for medical students
The book is concise and easy to follow. It contains a lot of background information, in format of inserted boxes, on diseases related to the immune system. The information about immunology is NOT thorough with details. Neither is the presentation of (immuno)pathology. But should be adequate for medical students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I bought this book for first year dental. It does a good job explaining basic concepts. There are nice, detailed pictures throughout and is very "readable".This is a small book (about 1.5" thick) and gives a good foundation for understanding immunology.I can't, however, agree with the "for Medical Students" portion of the title. If you're looking for something more detailed, check out Robbins. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Medical Microbiology Review Book..
'Medical Microbiology and Immunology: Examination and Board review' is more than a good book. The organization and contents of the book are great. Summaries of the most important microorganisms at the end of each section of the book make it excellent for quick reviewing what one has just read. Also, the book includes unique chapters like normal flora, laboratory diagnosis, and vaccines which are really helpful. The immunology section extensively provide a solit understanding of the immune mechanisms, using illustrative figures and mnemonics. Moreover, the MCQs at the end of the book, along with the clinical cases, emphasize on the important areas in medical microbiology.

One more thing I have to complement is the use of bold font in the book; this made skimming chapters quickly before a final microbiology exam a 'stressless' event, and gave confidence.

To be neutral in my review, the book lacks a good mycology section (You need another book for mycology).

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Correction and More Work
This book was required for a MT class.I have found several discrepencies in this book and errors in the review questions.I think this book would be confusing for someone without any background in immunology because it jumps around a lot and doesn't paint a very good picture.I wonder why my department chose this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Textbook Ever
SUMMARY: This book is poorly organized and does a horrendous job of explaining the subject matter to someone learning it for the first time. It is heavily technical, and does not explain anything so much as state a string of facts. The author often uses terms and concepts in one chapter that are not explained or defined until several chapters later. The few diagrams and charts included are just as complicated and confusing as the text, and are puzzles within themselves.
It is the worst textbook I have ever used, and I think a class would be better with NO textbook rather than this one.

REVIEW: I already owned the 3rd edition of this book, and was hugely disappointed when a new class I was taking required the 4th edition.

What is true of the 3rd edition is true of the fourth:

Like everyone else has said (except perhaps the first review, which was likely written by the author or her family) this book is poorly organized and hard to follow. I think it lacks a SINGLE sentence that is written in "plain English". Furthermore, rather than attempting build your knowledge stone by stone, it often uses terms and concepts in one chapter which are not defined or explained until several chapters later. It does not explain ANYTHING, ever, and simply states a long string of technically heavy facts which are nearly impossible to digest.
I cannot convey to you how much I hated this book. If your class requires it, pray to god you have a professor good enough to make up for what this book lacks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized
I have been a medical technologist for 16 years and have taught immunology for 12 years in the classroom and clincial setting. This book is poorly organized and not relevant to the normal clinical lab.New terms for a med tech student are used in the first chapter and then defined in later chapters. There is an entire section on RID which only high volume reference labs use and is no longer recommended by ASCP to be covered in med tech schools. The lack of newer illustrations and photographs, and boring layouts of tables and charts is also a negative.I have actually given our students websites to refer to instead of sections in this book to complete their objectives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too complex for words
This book along with others by the author are extremely complex and confusing to a student who does not have a working knowledge of this subject. It is as if she went through the dictonary to see how hard of words she could use to make herself look "super dooper" smart. You would have to be a medical student to even get the gist of what she is saying. This book's lack of color and understandable diagrams makes it even harder to follow. I would not recommend this book to anyone but PhDs, MDs, and someone who enjoys being utterly confused.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book about as good as her teaching...
This book is complex. Any normal student would be completely overwhealmed by this book geared more towards Medical School students rather than traditional college students. The language is too technical and the photos are laughable. There are no colorful pictures for those of us who like to be able to actually see what we are learning, there is no clear cut explaination of any of the suggested topic, and all in color green and the suggested photograph on page 199. Other than subtle hints of green, this black and white "textbook" is utterly and completely boring! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad buy...
Everyone's learning is different... with that said... these deja series aren't bad as long as their not used for primary study. Their great for final review's before your exam to help boost your confidence and help you remember stuff you might have forgotten or couldn't remember. For this book, i didn't really have time to use the immunology section much b/c I was pressed for time, but i found the microbiology section useful. Not a bad buy at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not particularly memorable
I got this book to review for the Microbiology & Immunology shelf exam.I like the 2-column format of questions and answers in this book, but eventually, it got rather dense and did not keep my attention.

3-0 out of 5 stars For review right before test ONLY!
This product does have a lot of information and is very useful... if you use it right before the test, to refresh your memory and hit the key concepts you might have forgotten. If you are studying in general and do not know the material yet, don't buy this book.It is in a two column, all questions and answers.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE for boards!!!!!
This book was by far the best micro review I had for boards! It gave me all the information I needed without meaningless minutia and was VERY high-yield for boards. I used it for my micro class during the year and it really helped, especially with group studying. The question-answer format is a great way to test yourself before exams and I found it to be a comprehensive review before I took boards. I recommend it to every med student looking for a thorough review for micro. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Meh
The book is good in that it explains certain basic immunological techniques quite well in a descriptive sense (at least at the molecular leve), however graphically many things are left to be desired. Many topics like explaining detailed immunofluorescent or protein immunology, etc are woefully inadequate for any practical use.The first third of the book explaining immunological processes is hopeless and best left to a dedicated immunology textbook like Janeway or Abbas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Clear as mud.
This book couldn't decide what it wanted to be.There were sections that were very detailed and not clearly explained. On the other hand, there were sections that were lacking significant explanation and contained so little detail that it was impossible to understand.

Also, if I had to read 'close proximity' one more time, I would have screamed.Someone should explain to the author AND THE EDITOR that this is redundant.I circled those words MULTIPLE times.Reading such a poorly written book made me wonder what else was poorly described and possible incorrect. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a good review
While some Schaum's outlines are comprehensive enough to sufficiently replace introductory textbooks (Schaum's Genetics is a good example), Schaum's Immunology is not among these. This outline is formatted in a question and answer style that is well suited for review before exams. The outline does not make a good stand alone resource for independent study, however it is great as a supplementary study-aid.So while I do recommend this book for those taking a first course in immunology, I wouldn't depend on it to allow you to throw out your regular textbook or start missing lectures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is an excellent book on the subject. The only catch for me is that, if you are abolutely new to immunology, this book might be a little confusing at first. You have to be able to understand some basic terminology to work with this book, once you have it going through the book is absolutely pain free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not touch this book!
The text is confusing, very baddly structured and hard to read. Because of the many different authors, the text is not concise. The diagrams and tables are often unprecise, leaving you with even more questions instead of answers. The book is a absolutely not the wright choice for learning immunology. For that I recomend Alberts: MBOC (immunology chapters) and Abbas 5th ed., which are much better books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immunology by Ivan Roitt - Still the best!
I used an earlier edition of this text to study for Pathology board examinations (with the American College of Veterinary Pathology), and found it readily understandable (for someone with a veterinary degree and Master's degree in pathology) and well-laid out. I was so pleased that I purchased this recently for an associate starting a Ph.D. The text has chapters covering general immunology, evolution of the immune system, species differences, and essentials for understanding most aspects of immunology, from cytokines to cells to roles in infectious disease and cancer. The new edition incorporates recent information while retaining the basic flow. Altogether, this is still the best text on the subject that I have seen! ... Read more

As a new student to the feild of immunology, I was looking for a good, general, updated textbook that would bring me up to speed. There are some general immunogy texts out there however they are very non-reader friendly, especially for a novice in this field.
