Product Description
From HIV to influenza, the battle between infectious agents and the immune system is at the heart of disease. Knowledge of how and why parasites vary to escape recognition by the immune system is central to vaccine design, the control of epidemics, and our fundamental understanding of parasite ecology and evolution. As the first comprehensive synthesis of parasite variation at the molecular, population, and evolutionary levels, this book is essential reading for students and researchers throughout biology and biomedicine.

The author uses an evolutionary perspective to meld the terms and findings of molecular biology, immunology, pathogen biology, and population dynamics. This multidisciplinary approach offers newcomers a readable introduction while giving specialists an invaluable guide to allied subjects. Every aspect of the immune response is presented in the functional context of parasite recognition and defense--an emphasis that gives structure to a tremendous amount of data and brings into sharp focus the great complexity of immunology. The problems that end each chapter set the challenge for future research, and the text includes extensive discussion of HIV, influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and many other pathogens.

This is the only book that treats in an integrated way all factors affecting variation in infectious disease. It is a superb teaching tool and a rich source of ideas for new and experienced researchers. For molecular biologists, immunologists, and evolutionary biologists, this book provides new insight into infectious agents, immunity, and the evolution of infectious disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I really like this book. It presents a wonderfully concise set of well written examples, with key literature cites. Some very interesting problems that illuminate the complexity.

Minor erratum on page 117. States that sum of squares of the two alleles is the incidence of the combined. Correctly, when squaring both sides it is:
(p+q)^2 = 1^2

p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1

2pq = 1- p^2 - q^2
pq = (1 - p^2 - q^2)/2

So properly speaking, it is one-half of 1 - sum of the 2 squares for the simple case of 2 alleles.i.e. about 27%

But, that is a minor technical error that is common to make. The book is very good and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between introductory material and advanced research questions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!!
I purchased this book a few months ago for the course I am taking. The book is well written and provides a wealth of information.
HOWEVER, BEWARE!!This book does NOT come with ANY type of internet or computer support of ANY kind!!!There is no CD with the book, no supporting website, etc. So if you have even the simplest of questions that you would rather not bother your professor with (or have at 2 am when you seem to be alone), there is nothing to help you with this.
Like I said, the book is wonderful but the Author and/or publishing company needs to get with the 21st Century as well as with "Today's Student".

2-0 out of 5 stars Klaus must update or perish
Just a quick note: Dr. Elgert's text is 10 years old.. 10!That's before the human genome came out, and what's more, the book is hopelessly outdated on a number of points.First of all, a lot of good science has been put out in the 10 years since its publication. Second, his illustrations look like their were made in MSPaint (and they very well may have been). Moreover, he reprintedhis old edition at some point, but in black and white, and on rough, heavier paper.Buyer beware - the cover is identical.

LUCKILY.. if you don't go to Virginia Tech, I'm sure you're not in danger of exposure to this opaque anachronism of a textbook...

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Easy to read
It's very good textbook, easy to read and understand. I'm waiting for the new and up-to-date edition from the author, if possible. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good organization, mediocre figures
I use this book for first-year pharmacy students, 50% of whom have only associate's degrees and no prior exposure to genetics or molecular biology. The strengths of the book are its brevity, medical orientation (hence the title) and organization. The sequence of presentation seems to make more sense to me than other books I have examined. Kuby Immunology, for example, has far better figures and vastly more detail, especially in molecular biology and signal transduction. There is also a great deal of experimental methodology presented. But the latter features would certainly overwhelm my audience. Also, Kuby shows some peculiarities in the sequence of presentation that add to and complicate the inherent nonlinearity of the whole immunology 'story' that you want to tell students. Much the same thing can be said about Janeway, a book that seems clearly aimed at a postgraduate audience. A real downside of Roitt is mediocre figures, many of which are not even included on the Roitt web site. Kuby has all of its figures unreservedly available on the web. For my particular audience and application, Roitt is the best choice. ... Read more

The basic immunological processes are described first, with a level of detail restricted to what is appropriate for medical (and similar) curricula. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good text book of immunology
I found this a very suitable text for the teaching of entry-level immunology as it is very clearly written and also amply illustrated with excellent graphics and flow diagrams. It has been a very well received settext (adopted since 1999) for the two immunology modules that we teach inour polytechnic diploma course in medical laboratory technology.Mystudents, in particular, very much like the short summaries which are inpoint form for easy revision. One possible drawback is a missing chapteron commonly used techniques in diagnostic immunology - whilst this book isnot intended as a manual of laboratory methods, we would have loved to readabout the various principles & applications, explained in the authors'succinct style, thus making it a comprehensive text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
Good review book with great online question bank.I am a huge fan of the Rapid Review series!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another very good Rapid Review book
The more and more I look into Rapid Review, the more I realize how great their series really is (NOT just things written by Dr. Goljan). The book is written very well and things flow very easily. This is of course a review book, and should be used along with your course material and also to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam.

First Aid gives this book an "A" for Micro and Immuno, and I definitely agree.Clinical Micro Made Ridiculously Simple is far too long for boards review. The charts CMMRS provides ARE GOOD, but its too much to read if you didn't do so along with your course material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Fast, Fast
So, lets get to the point. This is a really fast book to move through. It has highlighted words inside bullet points that make reading each chapter easy after you have already read the chapter once. The experienced student will find this book to be a quick, concise review that is not bogged down in detail or words. However, there is a down side to moving at this pace.A beginner will feel lost and confused. What looks like a quick review to an advanced reader will become a memorization of bullet points if you don't have a little background to begin with. The questions that are provided are excellent and board worthy. However, they are not found at the end of each chapter.A couple of full length tests are at the end of the book, but you will not be able to practice after finishing a chapter.Online access, which comes with the book for free, does break up the questions a little more, but not into chapters. You really won't be able to practice questions until you have all of the book read, or you will need to filter through questions to find the ones that you can answer (an awful waist of time).Still, if you are trying to decide between BRS and this one, pick this one.You will be happier with the well organized easy to follow outline that isn't bogged down in details, and unfortunately you will find BRS immuno or micro just as difficult for a beginner. Before using this book, I used parham immuno and Microbio made ridiculously simple. It would benefit you to use these books (or at least ridiculously simple) before trying to master this one or in tandom.

3-0 out of 5 stars mediocre review book
I did not find this book too helpful... especially since I've never taken Immunology before. I ended up purchasing the Kuby Immunology textbook which is much better (also more costly).

This may be a good book for someone who is looking for a book to review concepts before Board exams. But even then... I'd probably prefer BRS or First Aid to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review of Micro
This is a fairly well-written review of micro for the Boards. However, this would not be my first choice for studying micro- I would recommend instead to use Micro Made Ridiculously Simple and the Kaplan microbiology.
One of the good features in this book that I like in comparison to the BRS is the onine questions which sevre well for a quick kill review. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An advanced academic literature review
This book is a literature review of the field of exercise immunology as far as 1999. It covers, in exquisite detail, research on how athletic training influences the immune system and vise-versa. If you don't have a university-level biomedical education, you will have a very hard time reading it. Even with some familiarity with medical terminology and immunology, it is a tough and rigorous read. This is not like reading Scientific American!
The author gives a summary of the human immune system in chapter 2, but it is still necessary for the reader to know the functions of neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, B- and T-lymphocytes, NK cells, the various classes of immunoglobulins, various cytokines, and acute phase proteins.
The research reviewed in this book focuses on athletes, not ordinary persons trying to get fit. Most of the major "interesting" immune effects are seen with intense and prolonged physical training. The applications of the material in this book should be of keen interest to coaches and athletes themselves who want to avoid the "overtraining syndrome."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I think that this book is great, it explains everything about exercise immunologye in a clear and very inteligent way.

It's a coplex matter, but, not impossible to understand...
