Book Description

At the dawn of the 21st century, the old paradigms of medicine have begun to fall apart. We no longer believe that our bodies are machines with parts that wear down, only to be braced up by drugs or replaced through surgery. Instead, a growing number of pioneering researchers embrace a new view of healing – one expounded by Dr. Richard Gerber in his groundbreaking best–seller, Vibrational Medicine.

Now he shows how to put this new way of thinking into practical use, describing the role of consciousness and "thought forms," as well as the benefits of homoeopathy, acupuncture, colour and light healing, magnetobiology, and other therapies. A traditionally trained physician, Dr. Gerber combines scientific evidence with traditional methods from the East and West to unlock our potential for healing ourselves.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT Gift Quality for a "New" item!
I was disappointed since I gave it for a gift and had ordered "New" for that specific purpose!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical, succinct description of tomorrow's medicine
A practical, succinct description of tomorrow's medicine

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the old paradigms underlying the sciences are beginning to fall apart. This is nowhere so clearly seen as in medicine and in the physical sciences.Physicists seeming to be less resistant to innovation than physicians, quantum theory has effectively replaced the mechanistic theories of Newton and even the relativistic teachings of Einstein as orthodoxy.

Vibrational healing now occupies a space in relation to conventional biomedicine precisely analogous to that held by what was called the 'New Physics' in the 1940's and 50's.

Dr. Gerber informs us that vibrational medicine philosophically rests on the recognition that the human being is more than a physical body, but also incorporates a "body" of life energy, a "body" of sensitivity and feelings, and a spiritual essence or Self. Vibrational modalities interact with these subtle bodies of the human being, evoking specific qualities in response. We can say that they work in a similar way to inspirational music or art, which carry meaning through the vehicle of sound or light, while the modalities of vibrational medicine work through the medium of the patterns of energy that suffuse, enfold and interpenetrate our physical selves.

Modern physics has known for decades that matter and consciousness are intertwined so finely as to seem to present the two as but aspects of a single phenomenon. Medical science nonetheless continues to utilize a nineteenth century model of the human being as a mechanism, but another machine (albeit an especially complicated one) in a world of machines.Given present trends, we can reasonably expect that in the coming century medical science will develop ways of assessing the impact of consciousness on health, and we will learn more about ourselves and the ways in which vibrational healing modalities work.

Dr. Richard Gerber's work is destined to become a classic: a practical, succinct description of tomorrow's medicine - so clearly written that one might read it and without further ado utilize some of the more straightforward therapeutic modalities described therein which run the gamut from homeopathy to color therapy, from radiesthesia to Reiki.

I unhesitatingly recommend Dr. Richard Gerber's valuable and delightfully-written volume to every healer, professional or lay, with an interest in alternative or complementary medicine or energetic healing.

1-0 out of 5 stars How Many Ways Can You Spell QUACK?
Vibrational Medicine is allegedly written by someone with an M.D. With that being so, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that the author had a fair amount of education and was capable of writing a book that while potentially controversial (nothing wrong with that per se) but was supported by real research which, of course, would also be listed in a well-written bibliography. Don't expect anything like this; however, from Richard Gerber - the guy is a real QUACK!

I originally had high hopes for this book - with the topic being "vibrational medicine" there is an incredible wealth of information on all kinds of related topics - including the complete sound spectrum and the electromagnetic continuum. Obviously an enormous amount of time could be spent onexamining such readily (and empirically) identifiable uses of such waveforms but that seems to be expecting far too much from Gerber.

Instead of science, Gerber decides to spew forth endless pages of New Age quackery beginning with a seemingly never-ending discourse on chakra's and other such garbage. He refers to "research" conducted by clairvoyants, psychics, faith healers, "medical intuitives",and a whole plethora of other euphemisms as the basis for his drivel. This appears to be designed to legitimize the fact that he can't support the bizarre ideas he presents.

While one can't help but wonder if Gerber must have missed his thorazine when he wrote this nonsense, he covers many of the most ridiculous modalities of "healing" but ignores many, many valid ones. For example, Gerber doesn't even mention the use of sound - a treatment modality that has found uses in essentially every culture and yet he goes into such bizarre topics as long distance "color therapy" where the healer merely "thinks" of a color while projecting his/her healing thought upon a patient who happens to be miles away.

In fact, this book contains so much meaningless tripe that it might be best to sum it up by hypothesizing a visit to Gerber's "medical" practice. For example: suppose you are in the midst of a massive heart attack. After reading this book, it is easy to imagine that Gerber would tell you that his on-staff "medical intuitive" took the day off in order to find some more snake oil. As a result, he needs to call the psychic hotline first (because he can't read your aura) and will need the so-called clairvoyant at the other end of the line bathe you in "indigo" in order to unblock your chakras. Let's not forget that you will need to be facing west, during your heart attack, and have magnets placed upon your chest as you sniff the essence of dandelions that have been fermented in a green room (shaped like a pyramid, of course).

While there are so many promising approaches to healing that use legitmate techniques for overcoming sickness, books like this do nothing but harm those who are doing real research into alternative medicine modalities. If you have any sense, at all, avoid this unscientific pile of excrement behind ... after all, you wouldn't want to block your chakras!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This book is so intense. It gets into information that some people aren't ready for. One of the concepts was: everything has an energy force, for instance, if you want love in your life, put rubies in a pitcher of filtered water in the early AM sun. Drink that water with infused ruby energy. The ruby energy will fill your prana, chi or vital force. It is not hocus-pocus. The author gets into scientific fact of how and why this happens. It actually lightened my mood. The placebo affect? Perhaps. There is so much information covered in this book. It takes time to absorb the information. Then read some more. But it is fascinating. I think I'll take mine out and read it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
Richard Gerber continues to update this classic, which is outstanding, comprehensive and comprehensible.

If you are looking for an introduction to the many different novel forms of treatment which have emerging over the last century, this is one of the best places to start. Hehas also observed some of the profound similarities between healing and spiritual growth. Many of us have seen individuals undergo sudden and sometimes unexpected spiritual awakenings when they have been working wioth some of these techniques.

Highly recommended! ... Read more

Book Description
This book, written by a well-known scientist with a background in biophysics and biology brings together evidence from a range of disciplines to provide an acceptable explanation for the energetic exchanges that take place in all therapies. It addresses a growing interest in the field of mind-body medicine and the role of natural "energy forces" within the body in maintaining normal health and wellbeing. This in turn has lead to interest in how these energies or forces may be channelled to assist in healing and the restoration of normal health. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but limited
The author does a superb job in illustrating the advances in scientific knowledge. It is amazing to me to learn how far advanced science is in discovering the workings of the body.It is also amazing to learn that so many "far out" methods of healing are now appoaching mainstream.

I was fortunate to have had a Reiki treatment. The session took about 20 minutes. All that time I could feel the pleasant heat from the therapist's hands although they never touched me.This experience made me more receptive to the author's comments, as there are many references to the effectiveness of hands on therapy.

I also liked the short chapters on each issue where the subject matter was covered in detail with explanatory diagrams.

My only concern, and why four instead of five stars, is that I would think that some people would have difficulty not only in accepting his presentations but also the amount of detail involved. This book is not for you if you read it with a prejudgment.Again, if it were not for my Reiki experience, I would have had some difficulty.

In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the author's style.I hope that you do also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy Medicine, the Scientific Basis
Great book on the exploration of energy and health.Helps us to understand different healing arts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best energy book for beginners i've ever encountered
If you want to start learning about energy throughout history, and understand how it all started and especially why new age vibrational healing is rising up like a motherf... hammer killing all them damn classic doctors who want to keep you drugged up so you will shut up and stop complaining about pain. Get this book right now!

It will provide you with wisdow that will change your point of view when we're talkin about (vibrational) healing, illness and where we get our energy from, concerning the information we have about CRYSTALS!!!! just a second there, isn't practically everything a vibration!! ha, think about that!!! verrryyy interesting! It's subject is focused on the 'Brain' like the doctor said, thinking: tssss all your bloody problems, but saying: madame/sir it's all between your ears. So this is a good book to start helping yourself without any doubt that the material is wrong, cause their mostly facts presented by true scientists who are truely concerned about us and not only about their paycheck.

Verrrrry easy to understand since I'm from Belgium and I speak dutch, french and persian too I still could understand everything about every subject in this book, I'm only 21y old, using the credit card of my mom hehe. I did study sports so anatomy comes in handy understanding some bio pictures from cellular material, but not nessesairy cause we have google don't we ;-)
Also good to mention are the very good references towards other books, but I would still search them here @ amazon and look for the 5 starred miracle that can improve/change your life in a positive way. Have fun with this one, it's truely blessed.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice condition, late arrival
very nice condition, new in fact, but arrival in day 10 th. Very late in comparison with 4 books more that we asked at the same time. It was the last...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow I always new good things were happening
Dr Oschman's "Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis", has put the "science" into what I have experienced.

This is a must read for all those energy healers who also like to know that it is not all in the head. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter and then the next.

Amazon.com
Long-term meditators experience 80 percent less heart disease and 50 percent less cancer than nonmediators, according to a large body of studies. Meditation has been shown to improve sleep and reduce chronic pain. Not all meditation is equally effective, however. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., has developed a form of advanced meditation he calls "Medical Meditation," which "more fully addresses every element of our physical and ethereal makeup... a full-service approach." Medical Meditation is an adaptation of kundalini yoga combined with meditation, using specific breathing patterns, posture and movements, mantras, and mental focus.

Different Medical Meditation focus on different physiological benefits for specific conditions, so once you've learned the basics, you can choose a specific Medical Meditation for high blood pressure, to improve digestion, or to strengthen the immune system or the heart, for example. Line drawings illustrate the postures, and Khalsa's stories about his patients are inspiring and involving.

Meditation as Medicine is not a brisk read or a "read-today-do-tomorrow" guide, however. Be prepared to immerse your mind in a study of chakras, mantras, breathing exercises, movement exercises, poses, and meditations--and discipline yourself to practice Khalsa's techniques patiently. Are the benefits worth all the work involved? Khalsa thinks so: "For the ill and injured, Medical Meditation is not a problem. It's a solution."

Khalsa is both a physician and a yogi. He is board certified in anesthesiology, pain management, and antiaging medicine, and president and medical director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation. Cowriter Cameron Stauth, author of 12 books, was named Journalist of the Year by the National Health Foundation. --Joan Price Book Description
Proven effective by scientific research and presented here by Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa and Cameron Stauth, the practice of Medical Meditation revolutionizes the healing process. By balancing and regenerating the body's ethereal and physical energies through simple meditations, Medical Meditation unites the mind, body, and spirit into a powerful triad.

Each Medical Meditation here has a specific physiological effect, targeting afflictions from arthritis to ulcers to cancer. Dr. Khalsa details the five unique attributes that endow this type of meditation with far more power than standard meditation. The combination of special postures and movements; exact positioning of the hands and fingers; particular mantras; specific breathing patterns; and a unique focus of concentration can change your entire biochemical profile, easing you into a calm, healing state. Practiced in conjunction with conventional or alternative medical treatments, cutting-edge Medical Meditation activates the healing force within you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware the lack of science....
I noticed a review that noted the lack of references to specific scientific studies in this text. Its definitely good to remind folks to be careful of any information someone is presenting, especially since so many of us are desperately seeking more effective approaches with regard to health.I would venture to say the "science" of today is a significant part of the reason the wealthiest nation on the face of the earth is ranked 36th in wellness in the world. With those numbers it certainly begs the question as to what science we would want to compare the info in the book. Much of the US today is still operating off 17th century science, rather than more recent advances in quantum physics, etc..

There is a reason meditation in its many forms has been around for so long - it works. Its also free, and readily available to anyone.2500 years of study by millions of people has proven that.

Good reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective healing program for deep injuries
Reading this book straight through, the book is interesting. But when one begins to practice the recommended meditations regularly, one begins to feel the benefits first hand. This is ancient yoga methods for a contemporary audience, with some info on scientific studies that support the theories of yoga. Keep inmind, this book is not merely meditation, but also includes stretches, prayers, and various yoga poses and breathing exercises. About half of the book is narrating "miracle" healing stories that the author has been a part of. This portion of the book is to build the faith of the readerm because to heal one must believe in the power of the body to heal itself. This book goes well with the author's other book, Food as Medicine. It is also realistic. Meditation can help healing, but only put out as much as the practitioner puts in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the effort
I first read this book about five years ago and found it a bit overwhelming - this time around I read it with a sense of anticipatory excitement. I didn't know whether to read it all the way through, first, and then try some of the techniques, or try them as I went.
There are some great reviews written about this book already. All I would like to add is this:I have made the effort to learn several of the techniques, and THEY WORK!
I personally do not have an illness, aside from rather intense mood swings that leave me with feelings of panic and anxiety. The exercises for the fourth chakra (heart) have brought a much greater calm to my life. I would warn people to avoid doing some of the exercises designed to increase energy at night. I made this mistake and was unable to get to sleep! It is best, like the author says, to do them as soon after you awaken as possible.I would also like to note that these exercises do require EFFORT!After some of them, I feel like I have done a hard physical work-out.If you have a yoga or meditation background already, you will be somewhat prepared. You will also have to take some time to really master these exercises. On the plus side, many of them take only 3-11 minutes to perform, so you have much gain for a little pain!!!What I chose to do was learn the ones that looked the easiest first.Experiencing the clear head, peaceful calm, yet alert energy has given me the encouragement to keep trying the other techniques. Some of the techniques I found made be positively euphoric. There is a reason why Yogis always have a smile on their faces!I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to put effort into their own well-being, who likes the idea of "natural high" as opposed to drug-induced mood-altering.Peace, alertness, energy and no ugly side-effects.
I've no doubt that those who use these techniques for serious medical problems will experience at least some relief if not eventual cure.I've no doubt that if I continue to practice these techniques I might prevent some future illness in my own self.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation as Medicine, a Prescription we can all Afford
If you are searching for inner peace, in the process of healing yourself, or healing others, Meditation as Medicine is an essential reference. Dr. Khalsa gives practical, step-by-step instructions on how to understand and heal your physical and ethereal bodies by combining techniques from yoga, meditation, and chanting. He presents numerous scientific studies plus his own experiences and those of his patients. He explains how the chakras, nadis, endocrine systems, and brain interconnect the body, mind and spirit.

Dr. Khalsa reveals many gems as he explains how our physical, mental, and spiritual bodies are miraculously intertwined. "Breath is the kiss of God," he writes,"With the proper breath, posture, movement, and mental focus, we can heal ourselves." He proposes that "The chanting of mantras endows us with a single-mindedness that is needed for a life of passion, commitment, and peace and heightens the proper replication of DNA."

Even if you only follow a few of his recommendations, you will be convinced that his approach is valid.

The techniques synchronize with each other to reinforce the magnificence of our creation. "The sixth chakra is the path of the soul," Khalsa reflects. If you are ready to explore the path of your soul, then try some of the exercises. Experiment with the mantras and notice how sound affects your energy. Take time to meditate and discover a renewed sense of vitality. Incorporate these techniques into your morning or evening routines and witness the miracle of the healing within.

2-0 out of 5 stars Meditation yes, but not medical science
This is an excellent book about Kundalini Yoga techniques and the chakra system. There are many great exercises. But there are no endnotes, footnotes or references to any scientific studies. The author has a medical degree but none of the techniques in here have been tested in scientific studies. That doesn't mean that they don't work medically. But the title of the book and the "M.D.," after the author's name implies that there is something scientific going on here. There is not. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gold standard
As an ER PA this is the gold standard to start with. Rosens is much more detailed but is too much to start with. I've found most everything I need is in this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Medicine: Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition
This book is a must. Its useful for any person who practice in the ER as well the outpatient. Is very good for general reference. The book give a review of the problem with a management oriented to the adequate level of care. Cover
every topics (trauma, pediatric, adult, ob/gyn, surgery). Is easy to read and well explain.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent learning tool!
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it.The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy.I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Downward Spiral on Autopilot
*Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability.Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility.

Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read.It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). The index seems somewhat disorganized, with references to isolated appearance of a word (example: see *first* reference listing to "hyperglycemia"... certainly not the definitive source in the text). This problem is not isolated.

The book has expanded by approximately 500 pages over the 4th edition, totalling more than 2000 pages. Its size makes it unwieldly to read or carry; it should have been separated into 2 volumes. Even with that expansion, much useful information is missing.Though descriptions of EKG abnormalities in advanced electrolyte disturbance are adequately described, it certainly would have been an informational asset to actually include a picture of such characteristic tracings.Dermatology is similarly poorly pictured -- there are only 8 pages of color illustrations in the text, with nearly 2 pages wasted on 1)technique of foreign body removal (not needed in color) 2)a color demonstration of SPECT data -- well outside the range of information needed for the E.M. specialist, and not definitive, besides.Even worse, the illustrations interspersed in the dermatology section are simply black and white copies of the color text -- providing only suboptimal repetition.

Bottom line: the *Comprehensive Study Guide* has been, and remains, a valuable text for an overview of the practice of emergency medicine; but either keep your 4th edition, or wait for the 6th.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Afraid to Give it a Bad Review......
Do you know the true meaning of the words "Study Guide?"Well, what that means is that you must be able to achieve a passing score on the American Board of Emergency Medicine's Certifying Exam by studying nothing more than this book. And I believe it, since I have passed it twice studying basically nothing more than this book. While it lacks the broad panache of the "other" two volume tome, the idea that you can pass the certifying exam by memorizing this huge book is, well, it's sexy. ... Read more

Book Description
The medicine ball, a popular exercise tool in the 50's, 60's and 70's, is now making a comeback in the year 2001. The trend in fitness is toward core strength; strong abdominals, obliques and back muscles. The core group of muscles or "core" are often the initial source of physical movement. Therefore, having a strong core is crucial to both sport success for the athlete and functional movement for the average person. Because of it's size, weight, and easy handling ability, the medicine ball is an excellent exercise tool for working the core.

The Great Medicine Ball Handbook shows the user a range of different exercises, along with proper instruction and safety concerns. Other sections include; rotator cuff exercises, stretching, a sample routine, and muscle anatomy diagrams.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Very Disappointing
Firstly this is a stretch to call it a book, its more like a pamphlet. Although it has nice color pictures it contains very little practical information, on important areas like which muscle groups are used, alignment concerns, possible stress areas, technique tips, etc. I returned the this item.

If you are wondering why you've never heard of this book, it's because the pharmaceutical industry and medical profession are not making any money off of Dr. Bieler's recommendations. The style of the writing may also make people think that this book is oversimplified or not valid, based on unscientific methods or dated terminology. However, nothing could be farther from the truth.Everything is based on empirical evidence that Dr. Bieler quantified and validated. With very straightforward methods, Dr. Bieler leads his patients through recovery, allowing their bodies to heal themselves. This book is by far the most important testimonial to the secret of health that the food/pharma/med industries do not want you to know about.Dr. Bieler was a pioneer before his time, probably scorned by his peers, and yet he had the key to health and longevity that industry wishes they could market. If you are opposed to the corporate control of your access to information, limitations on the availability of decent and affordable health care or are just plain tired of the propaganda and blatant lies that are perpetuated to make windfall profits at the expense of your health, then you need to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you own a body? Read this book!
Mr. Bieler used to prescribe drugs just like any other doctor, until his own health broke down. He then started researching the relationship between food and health and healed himself and patients in the worst shape which were sent to him, by (natural) food alone. The book gives one understanding about how Nature intended the body to be fed. With this understanding one will know how to use food as one's best medicine and become or remain healthy. Everyone on this planet owns a body; I consider this book as Book One for every body-owner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't there more doctors like Bieler in today's world?!
Dr. Bieler's book totally changed my life and outlook regarding the power and importance of proper nutrition as a cure to maintain optimum health and that drugs are merely harmful chemicals that can damage our internal organs. The sad truth today is that society is conditioned to rely too heavily on medication, even though they are warned yet still cannot follow this SIMPLE philosophy. Their time will come when they will face a lot of health degenerative challenges which all thanks are owed to killer drugs regardless of dosage (be it penicillin, insulin injection, or Tylenol etc). This is the book that everyone should read if they wish to live a healthier, longer life. I give credit to Dr. Bieler who lived ahead of his time. His wisdom and knowledge is evident as this book is written in a very straightforward style for readers to understand. How much this book holds your interest will depend how much you care about your own health. We only have one body (health) in a lifetime. It is worth your investment and money in your own pocket. ... Book Description
When Doreen Virtue visited Santorini Island in Greece recently, she was contacted by a powerful group of angels calling themselves the "angels of Atlantis." Doreen was then taken on an amazing spiritual adventure, where she uncovered the ancient secrets of the healing temples of the lost civilizations of Atlantis. Doreen found that her previous healing work with the angels, as well as the thousands of case studies of angelic healing that she'd amassed over the years, dovetailed perfectly with the messages from the angels of Atlantis.

Part spiritual adventure story and part reference book, Angel Medicine is a three-part work that relates the exciting story of Doreen's recovery of memories of Atlantean healing methods along with messages from the Egyptian and Greek prophet and deity Hermes and the angels. The second and third parts of the book reveal the scientific studies, case studies, methods, and charts supporting the importance of love and light in healing.

Whether you want to heal yourself or someone else, you're sure to gain additional faith and understanding from reading Angel Medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars your own perfect medicine
I have recently received a copy of this book and found it to be very informative and helpful. Read it with an open mind and you will be facinated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most informative
When I first heard about uropathy otherwise known as urine therapy I had the same reaction as mentioned, "Oh My Goodness YUCK"! I have to tell you once I did my research on the topic I quickly changed my mind.Martha did a thorough job at researching the topic as well and I would recommend her book to those who want to retain their power to self heal.

I had two problems with Martha's book. One she tells the reader they are exposed to almost 200,000 chemicals daily, which by the way 90% of them are not ingested from the foods we eat (you can do your own research on this). Then she goes on to say stay away from processed foods if you're going to do urine therapy. Is she for real???

Nutritious diet, a study done found that the vegetables grown today are a quarter as nutritious as vegetables grown fifty years ago withconsiderable amounts of manmade chemicals on them, kinda gives a new meaning to the word nutritious huh?

Everything you buy in the market is processed one way or another, even the organic foods have ,not so helful man-made chemicals on them. Lets not talk about the expense of these so-called healthy foods, so I think she lost contact with reality here.

Secondly she failed to mention why meat is to be avoided. The reason the experts say to avoid meat while doing urine therapy is because it takes a lot of energy for the body to digest meat. Energy that would be best spent self healing. To omit or not to omit is personal choice unless you have malfunctioning kidneys then meat should be avoided.

I personally didn't omit meat but have cut back on its consumption, instead of three meals with meat I had one (lunch). For the record I consume 3/4 ounce of first morning mid-stream urine each day, also massaging some on my face and neck.

Results in three weeks is my skin is softer and don't require lotion. The pores that has been large since my teen years have shrunken to almost normal.Something I wasn't expecting was my pouchy tummy is smaller and I don't have as much bra overhang. Granted it's only been three weeks but I can say I'm noticing a difference.

All in all I'm thankful that Martha was courageous enough to write the book. Most people would have kept urine therapy a secret regardless to how it had helped them so as to not be called strange.

Do investigate this therapy it's been around since the beginning of time and is worth serious consideration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!
The book contains a lot of information on a subject that is little-known in the USA.The author writes passionately on the subject because it has changed her life. Her use of many references should be of help to skeptics. Her instructions are helpful to anyone desiring to try this "cure."Her work is thorough and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE SECRET SAUCE THAT DOCTORS WON'T TELL YOU

I CAN BREATHE FREE NOW THAT I HAVE CURED MY BAD BREATH AND ATHLETES FOOT . I HAVE ALSO SEEN AN IMPROVEMENT WITH MY ULCERS . MY KIDNEYS ARE DOING GREAT NOW , THEY ARE GETTING VERY STRONG AT PROCESSING MY OWN URINE . I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DRINK YOUR OWN URINE . DON'T WASTE ANY OF IT . THERE ARE PRECIOUS MINERALS THAT ARE BEING WASTED . IF YOU HAVE A DOG , THEN DON'T LET HIM WASTE ANY OF THAT TOO . DO THE RIGHT THING. SMOOTH AND REFRESHING, HUMAN WASTE IS DELISCIOUS . BUT , MAN CAN NOT LIVE ON URINE ALONE , SO IF YOU GET HUNGRY, .......

2-0 out of 5 stars Better Information Elsewhere
Like another reviewer noted, this is primarily one chapter containing a good account of personal recovery from debilitating illnesses using urine therapy, but beyond that, it isn't much.Even the physical quality of the book leaves a lot to be desired.Appears to have been composed with a cheap word processor and printed at Kinko's and my copy has lines that are difficult to read because the ink prints only a small portion of the type.Van Der Kroon's book is much more in depth and would be money better spent. You can also search the Internet and get better information than this book provides.I gave it two stars because of the author's testimonial, would otherwise have given it one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book- but be mindful of pre-cancer diet & chemo diet
I am currently in chemotherapy for breast cancer. This book is very informative about cancer prevention diets and post cancer prevention diets. PLEASE note there are some foods that are recommended to prevent cancer but that one should AVOID while under going chemotherapy (which this books will help you to identify). So, as long as you read carefully for your current status this is a wonderful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, inaccurate information
I purchased this book because I have been so happy with PDR for Herbal Medicines, 4th ed. (Physician's Desk Reference (Pdr) for Herbal Medicines). Which is another mainstream book on natural medicine. Unfortunately, this book is nowhere near that quality of research. It is a simplistic, inaccurate, and critically judgmental review of numerous approaches to natural health.

They use a stop light as a visual aide to show you their opinion of that particular item, a red light means not to use the treatment, or use it with a doctor's close supervision. The doctor's close supervision is a constantly reoccurring theme. A yellow light means use with caution, and a green light means it is safe for most people to use.

They give the herb goldenseal a red light. The Herbal PDR states the goldenseal is 90% effective against malignant brain tumors. It is more effective than any chemotherapy available.

Niacin they give a green light, stating that it can effectively reduce cholesterol, but then they go on to say it should only be taken under a doctor's supervision. A medical doctor recently told me that niacin was medicine's "dirty little secret" because everybody knows it is much more effective than any cholesterol lowering drug. But, there's no money to be made in it, so no doctor will tell you about it. Another natural alternative to a prescription for high cholesterol is vitamin C, it is discussed in great detail in Putting It All Together: The New Orthomolecular Nutrition.

It gives magnesium a yellow light and says that it is uncommon for most Americans to be deficient in it. We need 300 mg. of magnesium a day, and most people only get 250 mg. so there is a gradual depletion of our magnesium levels. It is one of the main causes of constipation, it is called for in heart cases, and it greatly reduces the chances of having a mentally retarded baby; the list goes on and on. If you have a health problem, a magnesium deficiency will seriously aggravate it.

When it does give interesting information, it doesn't give you the details to use it. For instance, it says that a study showed that vitamin C, E, beta carotene and zinc showed that it reduced the advancement of macular degeneration. But it doesn't tell you the dosage or even site the study so that you can look it up.

It gives homeopathy a yellow light, and says that there is no research to support its use. There is an immense amount of research supporting the efficacy of homeopathy. One researcher said "Either double blind studies don't work, or homeopathy does." He obviously went into the study believing that homeopathy didn't work. Hence the need for double blind studies, so that the researcher can't influence the outcome.

It says that generic supplements are as effective as brand names, which is simply not true. Quality varies greatly by manufacturer in all things, including herbs and supplements.

If you are educated on the subject of natural health, this book will make you furious because it is so inaccurate and misleading. If you are just getting interested in natural health, I recommend you start with Chemistry of Man (Man Series, Second Edition) instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book
I was very happy with the book. It is in good condiltion, very readable, and came quickly. I wanted to give it as a gift for christmas, and was able to do so.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but could be even better
This really deserves 3 1/2 stars. It is very good for what it includes, but should include a bit more. It mostly emphasizes cardiac health. Much of the information is well documented and available elsewhere.

But it does a very good job in presenting the material and making it understood by many people.

3-0 out of 5 stars Know your expectations
The answer to the question "Is this book worth the money it costs?" greatly depends on what you expect to get from it. If you're looking for a reference guide for the so called "alternative therapies" (I'll use CAM for short henceforth), you probably should look someplace else. If you are a believer in CAM, looking for a scientific proof that CAM works, you might be disappointed. Although the book does list 20 conditions, which can be "helped" with CAM according to scientific studies, a closer look reveals that by "helps" they almost always mean "provides a temporary and mild relief for some superficial symptoms", namely: non-specific pain, nausea, stress, anxiety, depression, and high blood pressure. In my case, I was looking not for the information, but for another point of view. It's not difficult to find all the information in this book online, either in favor of CAM (mostly coming from practitioners), or against it (QuackWatch, SkepDic, NCAHF, CSICOP etc.), or even something more or less neutral, like NCCAM. After listening to all the sides I thought that Mayo Clinic, as a respectable medical institute, but with unusually liberal approach towards CAM, may provide a unique perspective on the matter. In this respect the book was more or less worth the money I paid for it. Two things soured the experience, however. First of all, the book isn't as comprehensive as I was hoping for. It contains a basic description of 25 popular types of "alternative therapy", as well as 59 common herbs, vitamins and minerals. This is a nice coverage, actually, but with hundreds of therapies and thousands of herbs out there (if not more) it's far too small to be a real compendium. I was hoping for at least twice as much. In particular, there is nothing about such famous (or infamous) things as colon cleansing and Philippine healers. One star off for this. There is a lot of information about healthy living, and just a handful of pages about the dangers of CAM and the quackery, but since I've found nothing there I didn't know already, it didn't affect my rating. Some people might find it useful, though. Another matter is more serious: deception. To my best knowledge (but who knows) they tell only the truth in the book, but definitely not the whole truth, which creates false impressions. For example, they speak of the idea of "putative energy" or "life-force" as a supposed basis of some "therapies", but never mention the fact that such concepts are extremely anti-scientific. People who aren't versed in science may take this silence as a sign that science, at the very least, doesn't deny the existence of such "energies", which is not true. A more disturbing example involves prayer. The book gives it a "green light" and says that a study (emphasis on "a") showed that prayer can change the course of some disease, yet never mentions all the other studies, including at least two performed by Mayo Clinic itself (!), which showed absolutely no benefit of prayer on healing. Whether prayer works or not, I find such glaring omission unacceptable. There are many other examples like this one, and even the choice of words is sometimes misleading ("study couldn't prove" instead of "study disproved", for example). Because I generally like and respect Mayo Clinic, I will take off only one more star for this, but I can't promise to be so nice next time.

Interest in and usage of herbal preparations as alternatives topharmaceuticals has exploded in recent years. Having a complete herbal referenceon hand is now absolutely necessary for doctors and other healers when a patientwants to add herbs--let's say St. John's wort--to his drug regimen. Should thepatient stop taking the Paxil he's been on for depression, and if so, how longmust he wait before he can start taking the St. Johns wort, and what's therecommended dosage?

The PDR for Herbal Medicines will go a long way towards answering suchquestions. The physician in this case would learn, after consulting thePDR, that "St. John's wort taken concomitantly with an SSRI ... may leadto an increased effect and possible toxicity 'serotonin syndrome', e.g.,sweating, tremor, flushing, confusion and agitation." The same physician willalso learn that the German Federal Health Authority's Commission E, which hasstudied the effects of hundreds of herbs, approved St. John's wort fordepressive moods, among other conditions.

For more information, the physician can read about the trade names, descriptionsof all the medicinal parts of the plant, actions and pharmacology (including thecompounds and their effects, with citations), the results of clinical trials, contraindications, precautions and adverse reactions (photosensitization is abiggie for St. John's wort), dosage information, and a complete list ofliterature citations.

The second edition of this mammoth guide includes over 100 entries more than the first, bringing the total tomore than 700. Additions include a selection of Asian herbs, such as BuplerumChinese (also known as Chinese thoroughwax), which is used in Chinesemedicine as an anti-inflammatory, and homeopathic preparations; a directory ofmanufacturers (with Internet addresses when available), a safety guide (don'tuse kava kava while nursing), and more. There's even a section that listsunproven uses for each herb. But make no mistake: this is a mainstream referencethat relies on scientific proof above all. Therefore, this is not a guide foreveryone, but for scientific and medical reference, it's a helpful andcomprehensive resource, and even those who push the herbal envelope will findmuch valuable information here. --Stefanie DurbinProduct Description

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE For Anyone Serious In Understanding Herbal Medicine
In my interest in learning and understanding the medicinal qualities and uses of herbs for my own personal use (and without any formal medical training), I've purchased many books on 'herbal medicine' and 'homeopathic medicines/remedies'. While there are some good books out there, there is NOTHING I've come across that is as complete as this reference book (4th Edition, 2007).

Some of the most exciting parts of this book for me have been the color photos of the plants (and not just a black and white sketch, or lack thereof, included with some of my other books), the description of the medicinal PARTS of the plant, the pharmacology of plant, and the references (or literature citations) provided that allow me to research further on my own.

This PDR provides you with:

1) An ALPHABETICAL INDEX (in the front): Lists all scientific and common names found in the herbal monographs.

2) THERAPEUTIC CATEGORY INDEX (i.e. acne preparations. migraine preparations, to wound care products): Groups herbs by therapeutic or medicinal category. Listings are alphabetical by category and accepted common name. Herbs deemed effective by Commission E are flagged for quick reference.

3) INDICIATIONS INDEX (i.e. abdominal cramps, relief of flatulance, to superficial wounds): Lists herbs by their primary indications. Entries are alphabetical by indication and accepted common name. Herbs deemed effective by Commission E are specially flagged.

4) HOMEOPATHIC INDICATIONS INDEX(i.e. aches, muscular, induction of sleep, to relief of symptomatic wheezing): Catalogs herbal applications in homepathy. Entries are alphabetical by indication and scientific name.

5) ASIAN INDICATIONS INDEX: Groups herbs by their thereuptic uses in Chinese and Indian medicine. Listings are alphabetical by indication and accepted common name, with the scientific name shown in parentheses.

6) SIDE EFFECTS INDEX: Groups herbs by the adverse reactions with which they have been associated. Listings are alphabetical by indication and accepted common name, with the scientific name shown in parentheses.

7) DRUG/HERB INTERACTIONS GUIDE: Lists problem combinations alphabetically by the name of the drug and the name of the interacting herb, and provides a brief description of each combination's potential effect.

8) SAFETY GUIDE: Lists herbs that must be avoided while pregnant or nursing, and herbs that should be used only under professional supervision. Includes scientific and common names.

9) COMMON HERBAL TERMINOLOGY: Provides familiar, as well as less common terms that appear in scientific literature regarding herbal medicines.

10) HERB IDENTIFICATION GUIDE: Permits rapid, positive identification of botanicals. Includes over 300 full-color photos.

11) HERBAL MONOGRAPHS: Profiles of more than 700 medicinal herbs, including description, actions, clinical trials, indications, contraindications, precautions, drug interactions, adverse effects, overdosage, dosage, and literature citations. Organized alphabetically by accepted common name and cross-referenced with scientific name.

12) NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT MONOGRAPHS: Profiles some of the most common supplements, including description, actions, clinical trials, indications, contraindications, precautions, drug interactions, adverse effects, overdosage, dosage, and literature citations. Organized alphabetically by accepted common name.

Anyone serious about learning and understanding the wonderful amd natural healing properties of herbs, NEEDS to include this reference manual in your library. The foreward by David Herber, Professor of Medicine an dPublic Health, Director, UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and UCKA Botanical Research Center, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA) explains it all.

I hope this book is as helpful for you as it has been for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
This PDR is really good info for Herbals, but I was expecting some recent info on supplements as well. It seems there isnt really one reliable source for Herbals and Supplements, so be prepared to buy an additional book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another rescource for an herbal library-but mainstream
This book has a lot of good research in it. For instance, the herb milk thistle has a "renoprotective effect on kidney cells damaged by acetaminophen..." It has not however been proven to help with cirrhosis of the liver. It can also cause side effects such as severe sweating, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The study on aloe and psoriasis showed that 83% the patients that applied the cream topically 3 times a day for 5 consecutive days for 4 weeks had reduced or no psoriasis signs while only 6.6% of the placebo groups did.

Bilberry patients with diabetic retinopathy improved 77% to 90%. This study did not make a comparison to the placebo group unfortunately. High doses and prolonged use have lead to chronic intoxication, and high doses to animals have been fatal.

A study with black cohosh showed that 80% of women experiencing menopausal symptoms improved or resolved. Adverse reactions for black cohosh have included gastroenteritis, nausea, and vomiting.

It was found that treatment with capsicum (same as cayenne) prior to aspirin administration significantly decreased gastric mucosal damage as compared with aspirin alone. There is however significant correlation between consumption of hot pepper and gastric cancer. They recommend usage be kept at 2 days and should only be used again after two weeks. This is an example where most herablist would disagree. So they provided some good research (the information on asprin) but I question their recommendation.

Goldenseal showed an average cancer cell kill of 91% for malignant brain tumors compared to 43% for the standard chemotherapeutic agent for brain tumors.

There are numerous other studies providing interesting information, this is just a few of them.

I was not sure if I would like this mainstream reference book. But I have been pleasantly surprised. It has a lot of good research in it, enough that I started tearing out pages of my most commonly used herbs. I highlight them, then place them in a binder for quick reference.

It is very critical of ephedra, which is no doubt a controversial herb. But like all things, when used carefully and correctly it can be a powerful herb for certain indications.

It is also highly critical of bladderwrack, saying it shouldn't be used because of the possible heavy metal contamination. Any seaweed, just like any fish, can have that problem. But iodine is extremely important for healthy thyroid function and the best source is seaweed. Bladderwrack is one source of seaweed, but there's also Irish moss, dulse, kelp, and chlorella to name a few others.

Today I was looking for pau d'arco, and it's not in the book. I looked under lapacho, taheebo, ipe roxo, and tecoma. I was really surprised they had not included such an important cancer and tumor herb.

But, all that being said, it is an excellent reference book, it just isn't the only reference book. I have yet to find a reference book that gives me all the information I need on herbs and supplements. But the ones I keep on my shelf, such as this one, do provide interesting and educational information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Other" drugs
Here it is in a form that can be used for scientific papers! No longer can all the "other" drugs (you know: The ones that have been used for centuries before Pfizer.)claim legitimacy via the PDR. Now there is room for what has worked in the rest of the world.

Great reference and takes the voodoo out of some of the "Natural cure" claims.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Classic
Great basic book on homeopathy! Good distiction between things you can take care of on your own and symptoms that would require more attention from a professional. Gives you basic concepts and practical applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Update to a Family Favorite
This book was recommended 20 years ago by our homeopathic doctor. We have used it so much, it is falling apart, so we got this updated version. It has great new information and still contains all the basics that got us through our health issues these past years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Leave It At the Store
I personally found the book uneasy to read and not something that I couldn't find in other books that were much more reader-friendly.The section on understanding homeopathy is much better described in "Impossile Cure" and the info on case-taking is explained better in "The Complete Guide to Homeopathy"I wouldn't recomment this book at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars conprehensive and practical information
After my first copy wore out, I am now on to my second copy! My kids came down with lots of ear infections when they were small, and I am wary of antibiotics and their overuse. Homeopathy became a great help. Our kids are now in elementary school, and I still use it for their little ailments. This book is written very clearly and provides lots of information without being overwhelming. Even my husband has fallen for it, although he doesn't want to admit it, (or can't explain how it is possible this would actually work, but it does)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview and introduction to homeopathy
As the mother of two small children, I find this book quite helpful. It is a general overview of homeopathy and provides enough detail that I can handle common problems on my own. It includes sections on the following subjects:
1. What is homeopathy?
2. A homeopathic physician at work
3. Your homeopathic remedy kid
4. What to do for accidents
5. In case of emergency
6. How to prevent and treat colds, coughs and earaches
7. Remedies for stomach and bowel problems
8. A happier baby with homeopathic care
9. Your growing child
10. What homeopathy can do for women
11. Keeping your pets healthy

The appendixes include the following:
* Remedies and their abbreviations
* Mini-repertory
* Materia Medica
* Pharmacies carry homeopathic remedies (this section is somewhat out of date as it does not list any online sources)

Chapter 8, with its section on on teething and the remedy chamomilla alone is worth the price of the book. I was first introduced to homeopathy when my first born was teething. He had been crying and sleeping only for brief periods for days. I gave him a dose of a remedy containing chamomilla, and he immediately stopped crying and fell asleep. I was amazed!

I also frequently refer to chapter 6 during cold season. The section on croup is quite good, explaining when to use each of the most commonly needed remedies.

One thing I didn't like about the book is how she talks about the same subject more than once, for instance fever in 3 different chapters. In one chapter she gives the remedies for a fever and in another chapter she says just to let it run unless it gets to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or more, and if that is the case, call your doctor. Treating fevers is controversial, I admit. It is definitely the body's attempt to kill the virus. But when my baby is crying and inconsolable because of a fever, I give him the herb catnip, and he feels better within minutes.

But overall, it is an easy to understand book for those of us who want to be able to treat our children ourselves with homeopathic remedies. It's a book I always want to have at home.
