5-0 out of 5 stars Micro lab book
I bought this book because it was required for my microbiology lab. I hated this class to begin with but by then end i LOVED IT! The book is so helpful and easy to learn from. I would reccommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology Lab Manual
This book arrived in excellent condition within the specified time.It was a brand new book and was exactly as advertised.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good beginner's manual
This book is very clear and straight-forward.If you read the text ahead of time, you will clearly understand the procedures and theoretical context for your lab class. It clearly is a beginner's manual, though, so it does not go terribly in depth into the molecular biochemistry of the experiments, which for many people will be a good thing, but not for those who want to learn everything about everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Microbiology
This book really helps me comprehend the concepts that are so difficult to decipher in the text book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm out $16 for this book
Thought this would be a good supplement to my sophomore level Microbiology text, but so far, I have not used it at all. When I've needed a simpler explanation (an overview) of a particular subject, I've looked in the table of contents of the book and not found what I'm looking for.I've received much more use out of the "Essentials" book (~$7) that I bought at the same time.

The author of C.I.G. to Microbiology seems to have been more interested in being "cutesy" with the content rather than focusing on necessary information.I would not recommend this to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars manual of clinical microbiology, Vol 1 and 2
This is the gold star standard for practicing clinical microbiologists

4-0 out of 5 stars ONE STEP BENEATH EXCELLENCE
At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. Pathologists, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and anybody whose business concerns infectious diseases will find the book useful.
The only setback is that it is awkwardly expensive. Many potential buyers would be enticed by cheaper alternatives: there are lots of them out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classical Microbiology laboratrory text
This book is comprehensive, well put together and thorough in all of its aspects. It is an invaluable text in the microbiology department. I and my workplace have a copy, and it is the most often refered text in our laboratory only Bergeys and Mandell come close. All aspects including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, laboratory metheds etc etc are covered it is a one stop clinical microbiology text. I have no resevations in wholeheartedly recommending this book. The only thing I would add is that I would like to see it on CD-ROM

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
I'd imagine most microbiology courses for biology or science majors is going to require knowledge at a much higher level than what is on here. So maybe it would be good for a basic introductory course but for most it won't help and your time would be spent on better material.

5-0 out of 5 stars cliffs micro
I'm in a very fast paced micro class. Our class is only 5 weeks long and we get the same amount of info as a normal length term. This book is going to be a life saver!I'm so glad I got it.And spending the extra $1 to see it and print some pages out on line while waiting for it to come in was a huge help, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Product
These are great flashcards unless you actually want to learn and pass your microbiology class. Not only is the content poor, several of the cards in my pack were improperly printed with half the text cut off.No wonder they come sealed in plastic at the bookstore, if I had had the chance to look at them before I bought them i would have known better. They do work well for leveling a wobbly table though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a SUPPLEMENT to your Textbook
I do NOT recommend what some others have here -- using this book as your sole source of information for a class without reading your textbook is not going to cut it. Your teacher teaches out of the textbook assigned to your class, so the information covered on your test will be from that specific textbook.

This book, however is a fantastic supplement if you are having a hard time understanding what your textbook is saying on the difficult microbiological concepts. It raised my test scores by an entire letter grade on the very first test I took after purchasing it! Highly recommended, as well as Anatomy and Physiology The Easy Way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the author's class :D
For those of you who are taking a microbiology class and need a solid textbook on the concepts of introductory microbiology this is worth a look. The book is great at laying the foundation of understanding for the ideas of microbiology. If you are a evcc student this book is strongly recommended if taking micro with Dr. Kratz. You will be happy that you purchased this book. The author's flow, and paragraph structure makes it simple to understand and easy to grasp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical MicroBiology
I have found this book essential in studying with my school text.Information thay may have stymied one now brings the information forward in a new light.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource for learning microbiology
At over 500 pages, this book contains an impressive amount of material for such a low price.Typical college-level introductory microbiology textbooks retail for about 10 times the price of this book (or more), and many don't offer a whole lot more in the way of relevant information or educational value. You won't be paying a premium for glossy pages and multicolor illustrations with this book. Some would argue that illustrating something like a gram stain using only blue, black and white will never be as effective as using full color, but I disagree.More importantly, the illustrations in this book are clear, well devised and logically placed. The text is also clear and easy to understand. In a few places I thought descriptions were a bit oversimplified, but it is hard to criticize the book for this since it is intended to make things as simple as possible. This book seems well suited for those who are learning microbiology for the first time, as well as those who want to refresh their memory on basic concepts of the science.I recommend Microbiology The Easy Way as a good supplemental learning resource for anyone with an interest in microbiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars One-stop shopping for microbiology
If you have the aptitude to read full-strength science (the book is targeted at microbiology students), you will find this very affordable volume to be clear, complete, detailed, and well and richly illustrated.

This book (which comes with a guarantee, right on the cover, that it will improve your grades in 30 days or you get your money back!) is thoughtfully organized and covers all the main areas of microbiology, from cellular chemistry to microbial metabolism to genetics to applied microbiology to how disease works to the immune system, and much else. Each of the 29 chapters concludes with review questions, a self-test, and detailed answers to the review questions. This book is serious about boosting your command of microbiology. The author and publisher have done everything in their power to improve your knowledge (and grades) short of sitting your exams for you.

Each chapter is lavishly and clearly illustrated with blue-and-black drawings and diagrams. I'm looking at chapter 18, Nonspecific Defenses of the Host, about the nonspecific immune reponse. The drawings so far have been a closeup of the structure of the skin, with about 30 different types of tissue clearly labeled; a diagram of phagocytosis, or how a phagocyte ingests and digests an invading microbe; a diagram of margination and emigration, or how phagocytes can stick to the walls of blood vessels and roll along them till they find an intercellular crevice to squeeze through to get to infected tissue; a diagram of the fever response; and I see six more diagrams in the remainder of this chapter. They're all excellent--and that's just one chapter.

This is not popular science, it's hard science. This text takes you right down to the brass tacks of how these things work, the specific chemical mechanisms involved. If you're not a student of this type of material already, then you do need to have a strong scientific aptitude (feel comfortable with chemistry and biological terms and processes) to read this book. It contains a tremendous amount of information.

But in this world of genetic engineering, scary flu strains, and cloning, this is the kind of knowledge we should all have more of. I have rarely if ever found any book that I thought dealt with its material so completely, authoritatively, and clearly as this one does. And at this price it's an incredible deal.

If I haven't made it clear, I'm delighted with this book. I will eagerly look for other Barron's books in this series (if any), in the hope that they're anywhere near as good. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy book
This book is very poorly written. This book doesn't define terms, doesn't bother to explain things, and just goes into incredible detail on things that leave the reader lost. I've heard it said that it's for a graduate audience. That's no excuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars really detailed book
I was assigned this book in college. It is definitely intense. However, it's intense in a positive way.I have always found microbiology to be one of the most interesting subjects of science.I have always been fascinated by parasites and bacteria. If you're assigned this book in micro class in college--definitely read this book.I also found Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi to be an excellent study guide for test prep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much info

Also, several appendices, a glossary, and a CD-ROM serve as helpful resources. The material is presented in a tasteful manner, not reducing the book to a mere picture book. 4-0 out of 5 stars office resource
I purchased this text to help review for the FNP examination. It is a quick-read resource, definately one to review with before jumping in to the medical books and journals.I would strongly recommend it for your medical library. It proves to be a good spring board for study.

2-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology Mystified
What a waste of paper.Nothing useful in here at all. This is more for a third grader than an adult taking a college course.Find a better book or you will be sorrowfully disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars good idea...but a lot of errors...
The idea of a quick review is good...but the authors have to look for some errors, like the scientific names...and others.
But the content is not bad...
For a first contact in the field i think it is ok...

5-0 out of 5 stars Why can't they write textbooks like this
This book got me through microbiology with a B+. Any easy read. Tech jargon is defined and explained in every day English. Much better than the textbook they required us to buy and for a fraction of its price. Can't go wrong buying this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me through my microbiology course
Let's say that I'll never be a microbiologist, but I needed to get through microbiology to stay in nursing school. Microbiology Demystified is getting me through my microbiology course. I take it to class so I can lookup anything I don't understand. This book is right on target so far. I've been pulling a B+. Now if they only had a demystified book for my other nursing courses I would be home free. ... Read more

Book Description
Would you like to bring guest lectures like researchers, physicians, or fellow instructors into you microbiology course? With this third edition of INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY you get the perspective of all of those three professionals. John Ingraham, a professor of microbiology at University of California at Davis, and Catherine Ingraham, his daughter and a practicing physician, utilize their experience within a case history approach complemented by a great technology package. Each chapter in INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY now consistently begins with a case history, which John Ingraham has found very motivational to students who are new to the study ofbasic science. Because Catherine Ingraham studied to become a physician by interviewing patients, determining causes and implementing solutions, she knows mastry comes from high interest human stories rather than clinical presentations. Many of the case histories found in this book are taken from Catherine's experience as a physician. This combination of experiences and talent brings a case-based quality to every lecture and homework session. This unique author team also provides up-to-the-minute currency. Coverage of new microbial "events" such as biological warfare, studied by John and its effects prepared for in Catherine's office, keeps students interested. The authors also highlight reemerging diseases, such as tuberculoses and smallpox. As with previous editions, this book takes a "body systems" organization. Students are exposed to the unknown, the world of the microbes, through the known, and the different parts of their own bodies. And, because art is so important, there is again a multimedia manager with this title, but with more exciting capabilities than ever before. Instructors receive powerful PowerPoint slides for all the illustrations, tables and figures from the text, plus several animations are at your fingertips. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great intro book
I got this book with a Medical Micro book for a class. While the approach of this book is occasionally juvenal (I don't need a little story about a boy getting a puncture wound to explain the immune response), it has been a good fall-back reference as the material is organized differently from the other text.

3-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's perspective
The textbook writing is simple but meanders enough to lose focus. The busy student could benefit from the many tables and figures, but somehow the link between text and graphics is lost in the voluminous chapters. The summaries are point like renditions of the text and do not highlight important material. Likewise the comprehensive self-test questions are not graded according to importance and carry no link back to the text.
Overall, a comprehensive textbook, but lacking the focus and layout for easy adoption and study.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
This text gives pleanty of pictures and the cases studies help reinforce what the reader is learning in lecture and lab. I did not have to use the CD-Rom, but the lab book that goes with this text was a lot of fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars I did not even purchase this book from this person and it was sent to me by mistake I ordered another book from wich was correct
This book was sent to me in a mistake. I never ordered this book from this individual. Honestly I do not know how this mix up was caused. I am not responsible from other peoples mistakes or the mistake of your services. I do not denie buying a book from him because I did but not the Micro-Biology book.
I would like to speak to some one verbally over the phone so that this can be risolved and at no expense to me. Because I did not order this book. I would like to be reemberst for the money spent to send this product back. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book I got is from 2001!!!
I order the book preview as the 1 rst edition of 2007 but I GOT AN OLD BOOK FROM 2001... BE SURE WHAT YOU BUY!!! I AM NOT SO SATISFIED NOW...

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition, A Major Upgrade
This book rocks. Seriously. The second edition is a serious improvement over the first. The integration with with other Lippincott reviews (Biochem & Pharm) puts this book on the must-have short-list for Step 1.

Watch out Med Micro Made Ridiculously Simple, this could and should be the new number one USMLE micro book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Information Given Out Pretty Fast
Notice the word 'Reviews' in the title. This series of books from Lippincott are just that. A review of the subject, in this case Microbiology. This book doesn't spend a lot of time introducing you to the basic concepts of microbiology. The third sentence in the book explains it pretty well: 'In this volume, we primarily consider the role of microorganisms - bacteris, fungi, protozoa, helminths, and viruses - in the initiation and spread of human diseases.'

I find that this book is a bit advanced for undergraduate study. It is not a general text on microbiology. As the sentence quoted above clearly says, it is oriented to diseases. But for a graduate student who needs either a rapid review of past microbiology courses, or who now needs to get up to speed in this area it is an excellent choice. In its 450 or so pages it completely covers the subject and in a fairly light, fast, well illustrated, and well summarized manner. It even has time, once in a while to insert a microbiology oriented cartoon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as the biochemistry review
I bought Lippicott's microbiology review, after having WONDERFUL success with their biochemistry review text. The one fundamental difference in the text books is that there is no summary at the end of each chapter. The summaries are awesome, and without them, this review series is not nearly as helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good mirco review for microbiology class
I used this book for my medical microbiology class as a study tool and found it quite useful. It highlights all you need to know for fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites.I also referenced the following:
