3-0 out of 5 stars mediocre review book
I did not find this book too helpful... especially since I've never taken Immunology before. I ended up purchasing the Kuby Immunology textbook which is much better (also more costly).

This may be a good book for someone who is looking for a book to review concepts before Board exams. But even then... I'd probably prefer BRS or First Aid to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review of Micro
This is a fairly well-written review of micro for the Boards. However, this would not be my first choice for studying micro- I would recommend instead to use Micro Made Ridiculously Simple and the Kaplan microbiology.
One of the good features in this book that I like in comparison to the BRS is the onine questions which sevre well for a quick kill review. ... Read more

Long considered the definitive work in its field, this new edition presents all the principles and practices readers need for a solid grounding in all aspects of clinical microbiology--bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology. Tests are presented according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS) format. This extensively revised edition includes practical guidelines for cost-effective, clinically relevant evaluation of clinical specimens including extent of workup and abbreviated identification schemes. New chapters cover the increasingly important areas of immunologic and molecular diagnosis. Clinical correlations link microorganisms to specific disease states. 4-0 out of 5 stars Large and In Charge!
Very good book, but very very heavy.Almost gave myself a hernia trying to lug it to school every day.Ended up just leaving it at home and using the library copy while at school and mine at home.It has anything and everything about microbiology and virology.Extremely in depth.Maybee too much so?Can be tedious to read from cover to cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book on microbiological diagnostics you always wanted
An excellent combination of a reference book and a well written textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars ARGUABLYSECONDTONONE!
As long as the issue concerns clinical microbiology, "Koneman's Color Atlas and Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology" remains the undisputed champion. This newly published sixth edition is the definitive guide for both students and professionals. Its extensive and up-to-date coverage (of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology) is second to none. In fact, this 1535-paged hardcover edition is an all-encompassing one-stop medical microbiology text. Very few standalone books come even close! And, its close-to 630 color sample figures exceed what many standalone color atlases boast of.
Relative to the previous editions, it is my wish to emphasize that every chapter of this book has undergone extensive and updated revisions. All aspects of theoretical and practical informations have received generous facelifts; and all the lab tests included conform to the current Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute's (formerly NCCLS) specifications. The same apply to the design, general layout, organization, and remarkable referencing of each topic. Every paragraph of this book was explained in simple, easy-to-understand English. Indeed, this book is a winner: anytime, anywhere! It is a true gold-standard!
There is so much positive qualities going for it that one may end-up writing pages while trying to cover them all. However, I must highlight the only downside I noticed, which is that this book is very heavy. Still, its well-bounded hardcover, reasonable retail price, as well as the high-quality papers used throughout its 1500-plus pages, offer logical compensation for the extra weight. Cheers! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very easy to read, lots of examples, bright pictures and diagrams
i like this book a lot. it has bright pictures and diagrams, gives lots of good examples to make things easier to understand, and is not too wordy. this is a book i will actually read.

5-0 out of 5 stars top notch medical micro book
I've written reviews for several textbooks, and it is not uncommon for me to rant extensively about high prices and the use of color solely for the purpose of making a book appear flashy. In the case of Mims Medical Microbiology though, I have nothing but good things to say. This is an example of a book that uses quite a bit of color, but does so with good purpose. Moreover the color is not overdone, and it is generally used effectively to draw the reader's attention to important concepts or to make illustrations more clear, or realistic. While the price of the book is not trivial, this is still an excellent bargain when one considers the quality of the content. The text is is clearly written and well organized for learning.I highly recommend it for those looking for excellent introductory materials on medical microbiology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wise Choice for Learning Infectious Diseases
This text book is outstanding in terms of clear pictures and detailed descriptions. It exhibits numerous color photos which help remember the clinical signs and appearances of common infectious diseases. On the other hand, the text excellently outlines and explains the underlying theory and treatments. This book takes a modern approach to teach Microbiology by introducing the contents in a system based mannar. This is very different from the traditional way of teaching the subject in which the materials are delivered species by species. I think this way is more clinically relevant and thus, suits the needs of health care students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Resource for any Microbiologist
Medical Microbiology would be an excellent reference book for any microbiologist. It contains general information about any bacterium you can imagine as well as overviews of the diseases various bacteria cause.Symptoms, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options are covered indetail. The book also contains wonderfully vivid pictorial accounts of thebacteria and their various modes of pathogenicity.A fascinating,well-organized text of sophisticated microbiology!

5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly easy to understand microbiology with you!!!
At least a very "biologically correct" textbook of microbial diseases, I'm going to translate it only for fun, for me and for my italian entourage; and so many beautiful pictures that I never seen before in a similar text in Italy.I'd like to translate it for publication if possible. Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide had great questions and answers and helped me pass micro with ease.It showed me what to focus on for class exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars COVERED ALL THE LAB FUNDAMENTALS
This "Microbiology Laboratory Fundamentals and Applications" is not a very big volume, but it left no question unanswered as regards it scope. From bacteriology to immunology, mycology to virology; George Wistreich provided valuble practical guides here.
Apart from shedding light on general lab techniques, this practical-oriented book directs its reader on how to isolate, culture, and identify various species of micro-organisms. It analyzed the basics of microscopy, staining methods, preparation of culture media, optimal incubation, and many others.
Designed for the inexperienced, this book used simple directives in all of its chapters. Most microbiology and medical lab science students will value its guidance. Its focus is medical laboratory; yet, it did not fail to browse many techniques which are of industrial importance.
This book will be of great benefit to any student who relies on it. Meanwhile, its rather high price force me to add that there are some cheaper alternatives in the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical text book for diagnostic microbiology
I really think this is a great book. I am a medical doctor who wants to finish her specialisation in virology, microbiology and environmental hygiene. This book really covers the practical techniques to identify different microorganisms. You finally understand which steps are taken, the flow-charts are excellent. I have not found a similar book in the German literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date micro for the MLT student
The hospital where my wife is doing MLT clinicals had this book. She was so impressed with it, she wanted one of her own. It is up-to-date with many color and B/W pictures of the most recent micro technologies and procedures. East to read and understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars What?
This book is very hard to understand. It is not written for the average student.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that you want
Although this book is not as comprehensive as Manual of clinical microbiology edited by Murray, it is an excellent textbook for the beginner in the field of microbiology. The color photographies are in good quality and numerous, which are wonderful tools for the readers. In general, I recommand this book should be buy by any one who has interest in the microbiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mahon and Manuselis - the best of both worlds
I was so pleased to find the second edition of Mahon and Manuselis because it addresses weaknesses of other texts we have used recently with senior level clinical laboratory science students.M & M find a good balancebetween an organism oriented approach and a body site/culture typeorientation. We found the 10th ed of Bailey and Scott's text to be strongin the latter but not the former while Koneman is the reverse, and far tooresearch oriented for this level of student. The book reads well;illustrations and photos are terrific.I'm a stickler for a good index andthis one is great! From an educator's perspective it has all theessentials: objectives, practice questions with answers, chapter outlines, and case studies that add a nice clinical touch. It is inviting to read byuse of color and organization.I have adopted it for next year and can'twait for our students' reactions. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Too confusing
The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1.Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey.Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid.Bottom line, not worth the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars execllent
the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! itsimplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost excellent
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Currently the best Micro Review Book
Yes folks, this is better than Made Rediculously Simple. Well, let me rephrase that. I like this book a lot better. Now dont get me wrong, MRS is a good book and I use both, but if I could only choose one, I would go with this one.

First of all, it just came out this summer. So it does have some recent updates that MRS doesnt have, particularily with the antibiotics. I also think it offers better clinical scenarios and presentations of the various bugs. It is in depth with what you need to know, yet concise at the same time. Ive used it for class, and for board prep. Another thing, is that it doesnt have those silly mnemonics that can often be very far fetched and cumbersome. And yet one more thing, but may sound silly, is that I like the font and layout better. It makes more judicious use of tables as well to drive home key points.

And the best of all, is that it has over 600 USMLE style questions. I thought for the most part, they were indicative of what you will see on the real thing. Last but not least, it also has a great section devoted to medical immunology, so no need to buy another separate book.

So if you have money to get both, do it. But if you are trying to choose between the two, I say get this one. The LANGE Pharm and Board review book is good too. Good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Micro cards
I must disagree with the previous reviews. These cards are great. FA covers the bare necessities, and these will help associated case presentations/pathology with the microorganisms. Micro can be a tough area for some, just bc of all the obscure names and associations. I recommend reading High Yield Micro, then moving to FA to re-emphasize the HY info. Finally, use these cards as continual refreshers as you move through other areas (like pathology - where they come in handy).

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!!
These cards are not at all what flash-cards should be.It is more like a text with the information placed on cards. Not good for memorizing the facts associated with each organism.

Furthermore, the cards are "titled" by the pathological disease NOT by microorganism. For instance if you wanted a card for Staph aureus, with the morphology, normal flora, toxins, etc ...it doesn't have it.Instead it will have a card for the most common pathology that staph will be associated with.

The Lange card series are excellent for Path and Pharm (both of which I have), but they missed the boat on this one.

For your info, I have finished 2nd year and studying for step 1.

1-0 out of 5 stars not for USMLE step1
too much info...or say more than one needs for steps....just returned it...
kaplan micro with 1st aid is enough for USMLE step 1....

4-0 out of 5 stars Okay....
I bought these cards because our required text for the class is Murray's Medical Microbiology.I don't actually own that particular book (I opted for Lange Review of Medical Microbiology and Immunology instead) but figured the cards would be good to own so I could study key facts from the text.

The cards are okay.I don't really have too much bad to say about them except that I prefer less info on a flash card in general.I guess this is why I usually make them myself. The pictures are good, there are sections on the cards for Trigger words, Essential Facts, structure, lab ID, virulence factors, diseases, epidemiology, prevention and treatment.Pretty much just the important stuff, although there are little stories and stuff on there too in the Study Break section.

The one gripe I have is that when I tried to activate the cards on studentconsult.com, my PIN didn't work.I did email customer service and hopefully they'll take care of it for me.Overall, decent cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute fountain of information
This book is both fascinating and broad enough to be reliable as a reference. Can be picked up and flicked through or read topically. Rivals Madigan et al. Excellent illustrations and on the right level forundergrads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all Biological Science Majors
My professor intended this book to be a reference for the microbiology course he taught.I personally found the book to be so interesting and well done that I just dived right into it, and still find more new thingseach time I crack it open.As a dual Biochemistry and Microbiology major, this book is going on my reference shelf. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not on par with the BRS series
I was very disappointed with this BRS.I have collected most BRS's for MS-1s and have been impressed with the thorough but concise manner in which information is conveyed.
In contrast, micro is outdated, redundant, disorganized and generally not useful.
The one high point of this book is that the immuno section is good.It helped me greatly with our half semester immuno course.Otherwise I would have given it only 1 star.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a better resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review, great questions
This book has covers all the necessary topics, including immunology. But the best part is that it has a total of 416 questions!!This is a great source of practice questions for the USMLE.Still, it could use more pictures and diagrams.Just for the questions its worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars truly useless book
i just took the nbme shelf exam and i must say without reservation that this book was not very good.look to other review books if you want to study for the shelf or for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Around
If you are used to the Pathology and Physiology BRS style, this is a very good book.Although Micro Made Simple is rated really high and so is the Lange book, this book did it for me, while those did not.It is detailed and simple at the same time; the outline format is easier to read than the full text format.I recommend this book to whoever is taking a Micro class or for the boards. The best part about it is that it covers immunology too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for the Boards
Microbiology and Immunology is another quality review guide molded in the line of the other Board Review Series books. While all the required information for the boards is presented, little is in sufficient detail forcourse exams. However, this book is a good reference and guide to helpsteer your studying in conjunction with a larger text. ...
