Product Description

Essential Cell Biology provides an accessible introduction to the fundamental concepts of cell biology. Its lively writing and exceptional illustrations make it the ideal textbook for a first course in cell and molecular biology. The text and figures are easy-to-follow, accurate, clear, and engaging for the introductory student. Molecular detail has been kept to a minimum in order to provide the reader with a cohesive, conceptual framework of the basic science that underlies our current understanding of biology.

The Third Edition is thoroughly updated scientifically, yet maintains the academic level and size of the previous edition. The book is accompanied by a Media DVD-ROM with over 130 animations and videos, all the figures from the book, and a new self-test quizzing feature for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
the book came in very quickly and was exactly what I had expected. It also came with the DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cell Bio, good in depth book.
Very good text book, goes into great detail of all cellular processes. Definitely better than any intro Bio book, or intro Cell bio book. DVD that comes with it is very helpful. Shipped fast and in great condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Purchase!!!
My book arrived earlier than I thought it would. It was in great condition just like new. The seller was prompt with responding to my emails. I am enjoying my purchase!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, brief book with one minor issue.
I bought this book for my Cell Structure & Function course at Florida State. Overall, it's a good book, very easy to read, and explains pretty well. It does not cover the minute details, however. My only complaint about this book is its vague outline. What I mean is that the chapters are not really organized; the author sometimes abruptly goes from point to point, and you eventually get lost in the middle. That's why I gave it 4/5.

I got this book a few days earlier than expected. The book is in new condition and it is a great buy overall. ... Read more

Product Description
In one of the first major texts in the emerging field of computationalmolecular biology, Pavel Pevzner covers a broad range of algorithmic andcombinatorial topics and shows how they are connected to molecularbiology and to biotechnology. The book has a substantial"computational biology without formulas" component thatpresents the biological and computational ideas in a relatively simplemanner. This makes the material accessible to computer scientistswithout biological training, as well as to biologists with limitedbackground in computer science.

Computational Molecular Biology series Computer science and mathematicsare transforming molecular biology from an informational to acomputational science. Drawing on computational, statistical, experimental, and technological methods, the new discipline ofcomputational molecular biology is dramatically increasing the discoveryof new technologies and tools for molecular biology. The new MIT PressComputational Molecular Biology series provides a unique venue for therapid publication of monographs, textbooks, edited collections, reference works, and lecture notes of the highest quality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent conversational review
Dr. Pevzner writes with a very lucid and conversational style about very complex and seemingly inscrutable topics. As a biologist who works primarily with computational tools in the field of genomics, this resource has helped to provide me with more than a rudimentary understanding of the algorithms and logic lurking in the methods of sequence analysis. Explaining dynamic programming to a biologist with rudimentary programming skills is a daunting task. However, his description of sequence alignment algorithms (including dynamic programming) in chapter 6 is quite readable and the information is very accessible. I highly recommend this book if you want a comprehensive understanding of the computational biologists toolkit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Readable and practical
Pevzner has written a very useful book on bioinformatics algorithms, and one that seems reasonably up to date. The table of contents follows a classic plan: restriction maps, assembly and sequencing, 2- and N- way string comparisons, and analysis of rearrangements. There's a good but brief section on mass specanalysis - unfortunately, that chapter is called "Proteomics" even though the term covers a lot more than MS. Other sections skim the surface of hidden Markov models and Gibbs sampling for finding patterns ("motifs") in DNA.

A few chapters have unusual strengths. The "Conway Equation" gives more insight in analysis of motif significance than other introductory books do. The section in sequence comparison pays a lot more attention to BLAST-like algorithms than other books do, also - modern material you'd normally see only in the journals. Also, the section on rearrangements gives some ideas about using rearrangement data for phylogenetic analysis. That really gives the material meaning. Rearrangements aren't just string operations, they're features of evolution, and they can be compared to each other. No matter what the discussion, Pevzner keeps maintains a readable and enjoyably informal tone.

The book does have some weaknesses, though. It's a bit advanced for an undergrad intro, but bottoms out before the Baum-Welch algorithm, for example. Discussion of microarrays for sequencing seems dated. Pevnzer describes their use in sequencing, a rarity now, but skips their use in functional gneomics, where they are used most often. Illustration style is erratic and many diagrams are oddly stretched (3.5, 5.7, 8.3, and others, some much worse). Formal analysis of the algorithms is weak, but Pevzner somewhat makes up for that with better statistical analysis than many authors give. Also, even though the book was reprinted in 2001, it still estimates 100K genes in the human genome.

This is a good second book, maybe the one to read after Pevzner's newer "Introduction". It covers most of the basics and gives fairly usable pseudocode. Most of all, it always keeps the biology in mind. That, by itself, makes this book stand out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it...
An excellent book for studying computational molecular biology from an algorithmic perspective. (But if you never took mathematics seriously, you are forewarned.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but the back cover lies....
As others have noted, the premise that this book is for beginners from either the computational or the biological field is flawed...unless one's definition of beginner is a lot more advanced than mine.

For example even chapter one throws out terms like "recombination" and electrophoresis. without enough explanation for the biology newbie, IMO.Heck, for someone truly new to biology, a bit of time explaining what a chromosome is is probably time well spent.

And for the person coming from a pure biology background, some of the mathematics will definitely be a problem unless they have a decent understanding of combinatorics and discrete mathematics. And that "computational biology without formulas" blurb on the back cover should be read as "not as many formulas as I could have included if I really wanted", rather than "no formulas at all".There are equations galore in this book, rest assured of that.

That said, if a person *does* have the necessary background to make the material accessbile, then the book is definitely worth the purchase. The book's failure is in defining its target audience, not in the material presented.

4-0 out of 5 stars computational
While this is certainly the do-loop of computational biology the reader would question the assertion that this book provides a common link (no pun) between the biologists need for computational expertise and the programmer's need for biological insight. In either case a solid basis in Discrete Mathematics goes along way here (usually a required course for computer science majors). This reader thinks a similar required course in genetics should be made for engineers to reduce their reductionistic tendencies. However the distinction between these lines grows narrower with each new computer chip.None the less the book is well written, and easy to read (as Discrete Math stuff goes). This book is not for beginners in either Combinatorics or genetics and the last part of the book poses many current questions that as the author says, "are just currently being answered". This book already assumes you know about such things as NIH, PDB, Chime, Isis, NCIB, docking, etc. For those less adapt at programming (myself) the following alternatives are fun, useful and to the point. Both trees and networks can be easily set up in MathCad using their built in resource center add-ins for Combinatorics and Set Theory. They also provide a Traveling Salesman routine in Numerical Recipes that can be applied directly to the problems in Pevzner's book. (Although remembering that most optimization algorithms provide only the most probable 100 out of 2 million it is still fun!). Most of the mappings and node process familiar to Discrete Math can be solved using Mathcad and some sort of adjacency matrix combination. (Including the four-color mapping problem). This provides the basis for most nodal mappings. For the more daring the adjacency matrices can be run through Matlab's GUI's decompositions and analyzed using their optimization toolbox. Currently I'm investigating the Hidden Markovian chains using the Frame advance feature of Mathcad applied to 2D cspline- intercept graphing and updating by frame iteration. This book is for the serious student or solid course material in a related field, and while probably not rated in top ten novels of 2000 certainly rates five mouse clicks from this reader. ... Product Description
During the past four decades, molecular biology has dominated the life sciences. Curiously, no participant in this scientific revolution has previously attempted a book-length history of the development of this powerful science. Harrison ("Hatch") Echols provides such an account in Operators and Promoters. A gifted molecular biologist and talented raconteur, Echols relates the intellectual history of the most influential discoveries in molecular biology from his own experiences.

Echols joins his vast knowledge of biology with personal interviews of the principal operators and promoters in the field to convey a captivating side of science--specifically, how the personalities of scientists and their competitive and collaborative relations affect new ideas and discoveries. The author reveals how logic and order often arise only in hindsight from the chaos of discovery; eventual solutions often come from experiments performed for entirely different reasons. Echols also shares his deep-seated feelings for the science itself, communicating his admiration, even awe, for the purity and simplicity with which life systems are organized. This gripping insider's account of the first fifty years of molecular biology ties together the biological questions with the scientific solutions of the people who established the field. It will appeal not only to students and those interested in the development of the discipline, but to anyone intrigued by the human side of science and the process of scientific inquiry and discovery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition!
This book looks completely brand new even though it was listed as used. Couldn't be happier!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Molecular biology from a historical perspective
For all the molecular biology students out there, here is the scoop. If you are working on or planning on working on some aspect of molecular biology and dont know where to start this is the book for you. If you want to become a serious investigator of biochemistry and molecular biology, and dont know what scientists in your specialized field did before you, this is the book for you. Remember, you cannot make an original contribution to science unless you know what has already been contributed!

The book is similar to the higly acclaimed "eigth day of creation" by H.Judson in that it nicely describes the history of what happened in the field of molecular biology in its earliest years and I bet it will be a lot of fun for someone coming into this field. Where the book differs from the other book is when it looks at events that happened much later in history - more recent events. For example, how did the discovery of ribozyme happen? The book goes into the various experiments that were performed in collaboration with other researchers working in related fields. Whats most impressive to this reviewer is that the book cites specific original research articles everytime it makes a bold statement like "this is how the discovery of ribozyme was made" which makes it very easy to get the article and put things in historical perspective (look at the extensive "Notes" section). You will also remember both the experiments that were performed to derive at the original contribution and the scientist. you can take my word, you will not forget either!

Last but not the least, the book has nice pencil illustrations of scientists who made the big contributions and it is essential to relate the scientists with the science. For someone that is not in science, this book will take some effort to read but is definitely not overwhelming. There is a glossary at the end of the book which I bet will be extremely helpful for the non-specialist reader. Overall this book is a gem and will be in my permanent collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The other definitive history of molecular biology
Hatch Echols was a well-known biologist. He spent years working on a personal history of his field. After his untimely death, his widow completed the manuscript. This book is the result. It is a history of molecular biology from about 1948 to about 1990. By molecular biology he means the attempt to understand biology using the tools of physics and chemistry. It is a superb book, as makes a fine compiment to the OTHER definitive history of molecular biology, Horace Freeland Judson's "Eighth Day of Creation".Judson's 1979(I think) book was a detailed account of three or four episodes in molecular biology, and stopped at 1970. Echols'book gives a much broader overview, focusing on the questions that arose and the people who answered them. The margins are graced by line drawings of the the major actors, done by the author. The result is a fine account of both the science (briefly) and those who made it.Most of the participants were his friends, and it shows. On the other hand, unlike most books, I am unaware of any animosity or basic unfairness towards any of the participants. Those of you looking for revelations of scandal had best look elsewhere. This is an idyll of discovery. Having studied the subject through textbooks, I enjoyed finding out about the twist and turns, the false starts and blind alleys and leaps in the dark that really lay behind the development of the most exciting science of the last half of the twentieth century. Highly recommended.
This book seems to be languishing in obscurity, and I think Judson's book is out of print. This is deplorable. Another reason to purchase it is because feel Operators and Promoters is a good book to dip into and read a few chapters here and a few there, so you will want to have a copy about the house.
Worth purchasing?Definitely ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most concise introduction to mol. bio. & biochem.
This is one of the most concise books I have ever seen on these subjects. Given the ambitious idea of introducing both these subjects in one text book, the authors have done an outstanding job. It is a no nonsense, clearcut book. Most of the necessary concepts are introduced to a decent depth required for appreciation of the subject. Perfect for beginners who don't want fat volumes. Great for preparing for competitive exams like the Subject GRE, especially for engineering or other non-bio students. One of my friends with no background in biology at all wanted to apply for graduate studies in a bio-related field, studied for the Subject test from this book, and cracked it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction into subject
Authors has produced very clear introduction into the subject. It has somewhat conversational feeling to it as thgough you are in the class room. Authores indicate emphasis on areas that are critical to know and understand well. applications to Molecular biology is given in every opportunity. Book requires certain knowledge of Chemistry. Although most used concepts are repeated for clarification, still certain knowledge is assumed.Without good understanding of Organic Chemistry this book becames buch of diagrams with no meaning. Certainly a must read book paralel to Cell biology to understand the biochemistry going on in the cell.

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of Errors!!!
For a "Board Review" book, you need something that is accurate and condensed. This is not accurate, and while the book is short I wouldn't call it condensed - it's just short.Looks like plenty of other reviewers have already mentioned the errors, so I won't go into detail on that. However, when I compare this against Lippincott's Biochemistry review, this book doesn't even register on the scale.Where Lippincott's book is condensed, but still has enough information to refresh and re-teach important principles, the BRS book is more of a "cut and paste" of little blurbs of info that seem dis-jointed.Worse, with the errors in the book, the "cut and pasted" segments don't quite have enough detail for most people to pick up on the errors.

This book has made me seriously consider the whole BRS series - I will be highly critical of each book, and not just assume that they are all good.

Do not buy this book - it will waste your time and cost you points on Step 1!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of BRS Biochemistry
I mainly used this book as a resource to practice questions before my shelf exams. I feel that it is a good review book because it also integrates other topics like pathology, and pharmacology along with the study of biochemistry.
I think that this book is a bit to superficial to use while learning biochemistry (if you do it may haunt you later when you can't remember biochemistry while preparing for STEP 1).
I recommend using a more substantial book along with your Basic Science biochemistry course.
Like other BRS books you will have access to the questions on-line, so that you do not have to carry the book around with you all of the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars average
Well, this book is much much much better than the previous edition BRS biochem book. The text overall does explain things but I will agree the questions are worthless. I ended up buying Rapid-Review BioChem and fell in LOVE!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, if supplemented with the Lippincot Illustrated
This book is an excellent source for good pictures and plenty of review questions. Do not use this book as the main source of learning.

Major draw backs included
-Lack of full text on [...].
-Not enough questions based on genetics

Major pros included
Abundant questions on metabolism
Excellent charts/diagrams for pathways

Is it worth buying? Only if you want to do lots of practice questions. I do not regret buying it. Saved by butt on the final, wish i used it for midterms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good review of biochem
BRS biochemistry covers all the material that you would expect, and, while there are errors in the review questions, most are simply the answer choice not corresponding to the explanation. I, for one, prefer the BRS format to the rapid review, so I'll put up with the inconvenience. ... Read more

Reporter genes have been used for several decades to study regulation of gene expression in vivo. However, it was little more than a decade ago that a new class of reporter genes was developed for imaging molecular events within living subjects. By following the interactions of protein molecules, researchers can resolve the complex chemical pathways that living cells utilize. This book focuses on this group of imaging reporter genes, starting with detailed descriptions of all reporter genes from different imaging modalities, including optical, MRI, and radionuclide-based imaging. Key scientists in the field explain how to enhance reporter gene imaging utility through instrumentation and the various applications of this technology. This is the first comprehensive book on all aspects of reporter gene imaging, detailing what is known in the field and future goals for research. Investigators in biomedical sciences, physicians, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries will benefit from topics covered here. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite the fact that advanced bioinformatics methodologies have not been used as extensively in immunology as in other subdisciplines within biology, research in immunological bioinformatics has already developed models of components of the immune system that can be combined and that may help develop therapies, vaccines, and diagnostic tools for such diseases as AIDS, malaria, and cancer.

In a broader perspective, specialized bioinformatics methods in immunology make possible for the first time a systems-level understanding of the immune system. The traditional approaches to immunology are reductionist, avoiding complexity but providing detailed knowledge of a single event, cell, or molecular entity. Today, a variety of experimental bioinformatics techniques connected to the sequencing of the human genome provides a sound scientific basis for a comprehensive description of the complex immunological processes.

This book offers a description of bioinformatics techniques as they are applied to immunology, including a succinct account of the main biological concepts for students and researchers with backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, and computer science as well as explanations of the new data-driven algorithms in the context of biological data that will be useful for immunologists, biologists, and biochemists working on vaccine design. In each chapter the authors show interesting biological insights gained from the bioinformatics approach. The book concludes by explaining how all the methods presented in the book can be integrated to identify immunogenic regions in microorganisms and host genomes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bioinformatics at work
The huge majority of bioinformatics (BI) books seem to treat the topic as an end in itself. I have to admit, there is a lot to enjoy in the algorithms people have developed and in clever implementations. Often, though, the calculations appear to be fine art, to enjoy in abstract, or for creating point solutions to isolated problems.

This book breaks the mold. It addresses every aspect of immunology, using BI as the tool and as the unifying language for discussing immunology's many aspects. The content gets off to a slow start, starting with two chapters describing the topic and its importance. The next three chapters summarize a few of the basic algorithms: alignment and multiple alignment, motif-finding, Gibbs sampling, clustering, and neural networks. The discussion is competent, and the authors' handling of neural nets stands out from the crowd of BI books. Still, the pace is too brisk and the range of topics is too narrow to recommend this book as a general BI text.

It's not one, and never meant to be. That section just reminds the knowledgable reader of the mathematical tools and BI terms to be used in the remaining nine chapters. Here's where an immunology background will help a lot. I know, because I lack one. Still, the discussion holds to a level that a determined reader with a general bio and BI background can follow. Even at my barely-following level, it's exciting stuff.

At this writing, the 2005 H5N1 bird flu is all over the front pages, so medical response to emerging viruses is on people's minds. This book explores the whole range of issues in immunological response to the threat: identifying specific viral features that stand out as vaccine targets, understanding the immunological mechanisms that need to be engaged, evolution of the pathogens to emerging human resistance, and the ways that human variation affects the decisions in medicine and public policy.

That last surprised me, but makes perfect sense. Different human populations have slightly different sets of alleles for immunological response. It's one of the reasons that humanity does so well in a world of ever-changing antigenic threats. As a species, we have so many possible responses to any challenge that someone somewhere is bound to be able to survive almost any pathogen around. The range of immune-response alleles, their different sensitivities and combinations, and their distributions in different gene pools helps decide how a vaccine must be crafted. If the vaccine antigen generally triggers a good response in African Americans but not East Asians, it answers only part of the question.

This is the first text I know that really shows BI at work in clinically important ways. It's a guided tour of the world of immunological attacks and responses, measured using BI tools - not just pathogens, but allergens, autoimmune triggers, and even possible cancer treatment. Beginners will have a rough time following the discussion, but this is a book for people deep in their specialty. It gave me a good idea of what questions are asked, and why, and how BI answers them. I look forward to seeing an immunological researcher's review of this text - from the pure BI stand point, it's narrow, but shows the versatility of the tools it chooses.

Product Description
Biological Science: a Molecular Approach (BSCS Blue Version), prepares honors or gifted students for the biology of the future by challenging them to think scientifically, to integrate concepts, to analyze data and to explore complex issues. Inquiry-based learning, a molecular perspective on the major concepts in biology and a focus on the nature and methods of science have been mainstays of the Blue Version since the first edition was released in 1963. The eighth edition incorporates new perspectives and understandings across major subdisciplines of biology such as genetics, cell biology, development, systematics, behavior, immunology and evolution–the central organizing theme of biology.

As with BSCS's other biology programs, Blue Version provides an alternative to the presentation of vocabulary and isolated facts by using inquiry to present biology as an experimental science. Blue Version also recognizes the role that biology will play in the lives of students, who need an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of biological technology as they make decisions about everything from food products to medical care. By presenting science as a way of exploring the drama and beauty of the living world, students come to use scientific inquiry as a means to investigate the biological bases of problems in medicine, agriculture and conservation, which will provide a context in which students can appreciate the relationship of biology to personal and societal issues.

Blue Version begins with a focus on the content of biology at the level of organization of molecules. The threads of molecular biology and the theory of evolution by natural selection tie together the chapters as the emphasis changes gradually from molecules to cells, individuals, populations, and finally to the biosphere. Seven unifying principles serve as a framework for conceptual biology ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great textbook
My son had to purchase this book as it was required for school. It had some bad reviews on Amazon, but what can you do? He was required to have it. He tells me the reviewers were correct, this is a bad textbook and students should supplement their study with other Biology books, as we have. Don't buy this unless you have to!

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst textbook I've ever encountered
I'm a sophomore at the University of Michigan that has taken introductory biology courses both in high school and in college. Recently I helped my high school freshman niece with her biology reading from this textbook. I can't believe such a poorly-written book is being used in classrooms.

The book is poorly organized, even within individual paragraphs. Some sections seem as if a coherent paragraph was written, then someone randomly copied and pasted groups of sentences around until the text became as confusing as possible. Complicated concepts are confusingly presented without adequate explanation. Arcane details are given more attention than the overall concepts. There were many sections where I'd have to reread the text multiple times before I finally grasped what the authors were attempting to convey.

I think it's pathetic that anybody should be introduced to biology with a book this confusing and frustrating. Biology is NOT this confusing, and it's certainly more interesting than the authors make it out to be. This book isn't just useless; it's counterintuitive.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm a freshman in Honors Biology and
out teacher is sick and we have a permanent substitute.I find this book confusing and the teacher doesn't do a very well job at explaining it.There are plenty of facts and information, just too much at one time.I suggest making a photocopy of the pages you are reading and highlighting the facts to study...

2-0 out of 5 stars Agreed- confusing
I agree that the book was confusing. I would not recommend it. Even with help from teachers, I did not fully grasp the information taught to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Overall Poor Quality
As a honors biology student I am very good in science and genraly like all of the books that I have used.I would say, with out a doubt, this is perhaps the worst textbook ever written. The concepts are explaind so poorly and unclearly all they can do is confuse a student. The language is written as a college level textbook.I would encouarge anyone consdiering this textbook to look for a new one.You could not do any worse.Even teachers can not understand this book. ...
