5-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MYCOLOGY, BUY THIS BOOK!
If you are interested in having in hand a reference book that explains scientific mycological terms as well as the etymology of generic names, this is your book. The illustrations are also extremely helpful, and the book comes in an elegant hardbout format and a reasonable price. It is a good complement to Ainsworth and Bisby's "Dictionary of Fungi".Dr. Ulloa had originally published a Spanish version of this book, and now APS has figured out that it would be a hit in English. This book should be mandatory for undergraduate students taking basic mycology, and for graduate students working in the field. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars classic text but no bargain
This is an excellent introduction to the fungi, however the cost is extremely prohibitive. The coverage is good, and its strong points are in morphological description and taxonomy. It is less impressive in molecular aspects of mycology.Given the high price of this volume, I highly recommend checking it out from a library to see if it meets your needs and expectations before deciding to purchase. And keep in mind that there are more affordably priced alternative pathways to introduce you to the fungi, such as The Fifth Kingdom by Kendrick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference text for fungi
The text is a good introduction to fungi with several excellent black and white pictures and illustrations. The text also contains an extensive glossary of mycological terms. However, as other reviewers have indicated, the text appears to be written for people with at least a general biology background. As a microbiologist, I find this book to be a perfect reference for fungi.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic introduction with a focus on plant pathology.
Last month I began browsing my 1962 edition of Introductory Mycology.Loand behold I read through the whole book over a weekend. This book was ourbible for the Mycology 100 course in grad school.I was noticing how goodthe narrative and drawings were in this classic. The book is not a glitzytome so common in textbooks today. Each class of fungi is dealt withseparately and there are extensive references at the end of each chapter.Of course because of the date of my edition some of the references aredated. However, the basic science here is solid and presented in apedagogical manner. The chapter on class Basidiomycetes deserves specialmention. The basidium development narrative is just superb. If you have aninterest in fungi and want to delve deeper into this important living groupthen get this book.It will serve you well for years to come just as ithas done for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars More intermediate than introductory Micology
This textbook is designed and geared towards individuals with already a basic understanding of fungi. Unlike the title, one should be acquinted with basic terminology so that the reading is more instructive and helpful.Once a basic understanding is established, this book can be a great aidwhen exploring the world of fungi either scientifically or for leisurepurposes only. The figures are very useful and the book is well organizedand easy to follow. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Several excellent books have been published that address one or more aspects of the diverse field of industrial mycology, but none of them cover the entire process of fungal bioactive metabolites discovery. Until now. The Handbook of Industrial Mycology provides, in one volume, an overview of recent developments in industrial mycology with emphasis on the discovery of bioactive metabolites and, most importantly, their underlying biology and genetics. Two additional features distinguish this book from other books in the field: 1) most chapters are prepared using experimental data to illustrate theories and 2) the authors provide methodologies and experimental protocols in their chapters.Presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances, the book provides a framework of basic methods, tools, and organizational principles for channeling fungal germplasm into the academic, pharmaceutical, and enzyme discovery laboratories. It covers the complex range of processes involved in the discovery, characterization, and profiling of bioactive fungal metabolites. The book includes examples of several recently marketed fungal metabolites and explores the impact of fungi on applications in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, agricultural, and agrochemical industries. ... Book Description
Research in the genomics of a handful of fungi has matured at an unprecedented rate allowing comprehensive review. Developments in fungal genomics should be of great significance to new strategies in fields where disciplinary crossovers of fungal genomics, genes and their regulation, expression, and engineering will have a strong impact in dealing with agriculture, foods, natural resources, life sciences, biotechnology, informatics, metabolomics, pharmaceuticals and bioactive compounds.

This volume analyzes the commonly used molecular markers systems, and elaborates the development of biochemical genetics, which provides a model system that established the relationship between genes and enzymes. Current knowledge about the genomic and genetic variability of Candida albicans, the polymorphic fungus that is an opportunistic human pathogen of increasing medical importance, has been covered in detail. Current understanding of the genetics and functional genomic analysis of the most important fungal pathogens of staple food crops, rice and wheat among others is covered including chapters dealing with the genomics of economically important fungi such asMagnaporthe grisea, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Rhizoctonia, Mycosphaerella graminicola, and entomopathogenic fungi. With several thousand recent citations, it is hoped that volume four will serve as a useful reference for knowledgeable veterans and beginners as well as those crossing disciplinary boundaries into the exciting field of biotechnology, genomics and bioinformatics of fungi. ... Book Description

This is the proceeding of the 5th International Workshop on Food Mycology sponsored by the International Commission on Food Mycology. The workshop took place October 16-18, 2003 in Samso, Denmark.

The Fifth Workshop was attended by some 35 participants, drawn from among food mycology and related disciplines around the world. The workshop was highly successful, with papers devoted to media and methods development in food mycology, as is usual with these workshops. Particular emphasis was placed on the fungi which produce mycotoxins, especially their ecology, and through ecology, potential control measures. Sessions were also devoted to yeasts and the inactivation of fungal spores by the use of heat and high pressure. Nearly 40 scientific papers were presented over three days of the workshop, and these papers are the major contributions in these Proceedings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to biology of fungi
Modern Mycology , 3rd ed by J.W. Deacon, is a useful introduction to the fungi for advanced undergraduates and grad students in botany, biology or horticulture; a lay person would have to have an unusually good background in biology to get much from the book. A very brief survey of modern classification is given to the level of division, with the rest of the text focusing on various aspects of the biology of the fungi.Various biochemical aspects of fungi are particularly well covered and there are interesting treatments of decomposer communities, mycorrhizae and fungi as pathogens. The book is copiously illustrated with clear line drawings and black and white photos and there are 23 beautiful color plates.I would like more systematic information, but I understand that this is the area of mycology most in flux. ...
