Product Description
Increased interest from academic, industrial, and government scientists in the pathogenic molds and yeasts has stimulated research that has resulted in a significant expansion of our knowledge of the biology, molecular genetics, clinical expression, diagnosis, and management of fungal diseases. "Medical Mycology" has therefore been thoroughly revised and updated for this edition to include coverage of all newly identified and emerging fungal pathogens or fungal infections, innovative research, and the development of applications of new technology in the field. "Medical Mycology" provides comprehensive coverage of the pathogenic fungi and the diseases they cause. The volume covers the history, the biologic and molecular taxonomy of the fungal pathogens, diagnostic techniques, and integration of newer antifungal agents and strategies for the management of fungal pathogens, followed by detailed reviews of the etiological agents grouped by the principle sites that they target and the host response they elicit."Medical Mycology" is an important resource for all members of the medical mycology community and associated disciplines, including research scientists, clinical laboratory scientists, infectious disease specialists and other clinicians, and epidemiologists. It will also be a powerful resource and inspiration for students interested in studying the relationship between the fungi and their hosts, leading to the diverse infections that they cause. ... The first textbook of mycology ever to focus on the management of patients with fungal infections, CLINICAL MYCOLOGY represents an expert, authoritative examination of clinical problem-solving approaches to diagnosis and management. It offers specific recommendations for understanding, controlling, and preventing fungal infections based on underlying principles of epidemiology and infection control policy, pathogenesis, immunology, histopathology, and laboratory diagnosis and antifungal therapy. The book also covers etiologic agents of disease, fungal infections in special hosts such as pediatric patients and patients with cancer or HIV, infections of the organ systems, and more. Extensive illustrations, tables, and photographs throughout the book highlight its clinical context and enhance the reader's understanding of the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the first mycology book I've come across that actually has a chapter on MYCOTOXINS and HUMAN DISEASES! Mycotoxins are the missing link between the common illnesses that farmers encounter every day and our common, chronic, human diseases (such as heart disease, infertility, and cancer). Just killing the fungus is not good enough to establish good health. Rather, reducing ones exposure to mycotoxins is equally as important. This one chapter makes the rest of the book well worth it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Weaknesses
Clinical Mycology is on balance weak in many areas, but most notably diagnosing trauma related opportunistic fungal bone infections. Many references are made to "uncommon" and "unusual" cases, but little mention is given to diagnostic methodolgy. See Clinical Mycology Online--"Opportunistic Fungal Infections" Reference--"Aspergillus seldom isolated from blood, urine, CSF." Author doesn't tell you that C.T. scans are an unreliable tool for diagnosing some fungal infections. See A.M. Sugar & C. A. Lyman "A Practical Guide To Medically Important Fungi And The Diseases They Cause" P.69 This is minimum information that you will not find in this book. A better alternative are two books, one by Fisher/Cook "Fundamentals of Diagnostic Mycology" and the other by Sugar/Lyman. Of course, there are also many strong articles worth reading in this book, and for that reason it is worth bookshelf space-- ... Read more

Product Description
With high-quality genome sequences for the important and ubiquitous Aspergilli now available, increased opportunities arise for the further understanding of its gene function, interaction, expression, and evolution. The Aspergilli: Genomics, Medical Aspects, Biotechnology, and Research Methods provides a comprehensive analysis of the research that reveals the main biological attributes of these species. The co-editors are a particularly proficient and prolific pair with long track records of scientific productivity.

The book sets the stage with a discussion of basic biology, examining the data on the structure of genomes and comparing the genetic map and annotation methodology. It includes a comparison of metabolic abilities among different Aspergillus spp. and other species, then covers areas such as comparative biology, pathogenic properties, and metabolic capabilities of the Aspergilli. The book reviews established techniques and new methodologies for the post-genomic era in Aspergillus spp. It comes with a CD containing color illustrations to supplement the text.

Filling the need for centralized information on a genus that has important economic impacts on agriculture, human health, industry, and pharmacology, the book presents a wide range of data, collected and arranged into one convenient resource. Written by a team of international experts, this is the first in-depth and exhaustive analysis of the genomics of the Aspergilli. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the proceeding of the 5th International Workshop on Food Mycology sponsored by the International Commission on Food Mycology. The workshop took place October 16-18, 2003 in Samso, Denmark.

The Fifth Workshop was attended by some 35 participants, drawn from among food mycology and related disciplines around the world. The workshop was highly successful, with papers devoted to media and methods development in food mycology, as is usual with these workshops. Particular emphasis was placed on the fungi which produce mycotoxins, especially their ecology, and through ecology, potential control measures. Sessions were also devoted to yeasts and the inactivation of fungal spores by the use of heat and high pressure. Nearly 40 scientific papers were presented over three days of the workshop, and these papers are the major contributions in these Proceedings.

Product Description
Today’s accelerated pace of research, aided by new instruments and techniques that combine the approaches of genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology, has changed the character of mycology. A new approach is necessary for the organization and study of fungi.
Fungi: Experimental Methods in Biology presents the latest information in fungal biology generated through the application of genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry. This book analyzes information derived through real experiments, and focuses on unresolved questions in the field. Divided into six sections comprising 14 chapters, the text describes the special features of fungi, interactions of fungi with other organisms, model fungi in research, gene manipulation, adaptations, and natural populations.
Each chapter is self-contained and written in a style that enables the reader to progress from elementary concepts to advanced research, benefiting both beginning research workers and experienced professionals. A comprehensive appendix covers the principles in naming fungi and discusses their broad classification. ... Read more
