5-0 out of 5 stars buy it!
i really like the author's clear explanations and organization of the book. this is basically an outline of her physiology textbook, which is also great. i only wish that brs physiology had more color charts/diagrams/images. for the cost of the book, i think it's a reasonable request.

Book Description
The eleventh edition of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology marks a new milestone in the publication of the phenomenally successful Principles of Anatomy and Physiology. Bryan Derrickson of Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida joins Jerry Tortora as a co-author, bringing his background and expertise in physiology in balance with Jerry's focus on anatomy. The authors have maintained in the text the superb balance between structure and function and continue to emphasize the correlations between normal physiology and pathophysiology, normal anatomy and pathology, and homeostasis and homeostatic imbalances. The acclaimed illustration program is now even better thanks to the input of hundreds of professors and students and the re-development of many of the figures depicting the toughest topics for students to grasp. The eleventh edition now fully integrates this exceptional text with a host of innovative electronic media, setting the standard once again for a rewarding and successful classroom experience for both students and instructors. ... This is a great textbook, mind you I have about 5 others just like it so to say that this is the one I prefer to use- it's a BIG deal. It gives you the 360 of everything in a way that you can understand. WELL DONE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy book
I love this book. It goes an extra mile into helping students understand the concept of human anatomy. I will keep it for future references.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text for the beginning of your medical course
This text really is a fantastic resource for someone beginning studies in medicine or medicine-related fields. Clear, precise illustrations, with the right amount of detail for the first year of a course, enable quick learning of the basic principles of structure and function. It is also written very well, set out sensibly, and provides clinical correlations to remind the student how the principles they are learning relate to clinical situations. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fully comprehensive
I just used this for the Respiratory section of Physiology in medical school and it covered all topics that you will see on Step 1.Its easy to read and understand and is a great comprehensive guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Respiratory Physiology Book
This book is short and sweet, but don't be fooled: by the time you're done absorbing these lessons on respiratory physiology, you'll be well-armed to study and comprehend respiratory pathology.

As a medical student, I found, Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials, to be a clear, well-written book that will likely be useful for Step 1, and will definitely warrant a second reading during the clinical years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Respiratory Phys Provides The Basics
Respiratory Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school respiratory physiology unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the respiratory system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for medical school.
This book might be a good review text for people who are already familiar with the material, but it can't be used as a stand-alone text. It just doesn't have the necessary explanations. I'd recommend sticking with the respiratory chapters in your favorite comprehensive medical physiology textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Guide for the lung

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
I used this book to homeschool my 13 year old daughter, who went on to obtain a 750 on the SAT II Biology. I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. 5-0 out of 5 stars A&P @ its best!!!
I used this book for two semesters of college (A&P I and II).It is thorough in its explanations and gives you a clear understanding of all of the subject matter. It has great illustrations and the chapters are broken up well.It has question and answer sections at the end of each chapter that aid in learning. My professors where both well known from Wash. U and the course was quite difficult but, I recieved A's (and I am no rocket scientist).I had the 6th edition but I have worked out of the 7th, both are sufficient.ENJOY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Anatomy & Physiology was really difficult for me... but with this book and the study guide (which wasn't used at my school but I got on my own) made a HUGE difference in learning the information. The book made the subject interesting and you wanted to learn more.It had helpful tips and analogies for remembering key points.I like the book alot and was able to pull off a "B" which for me was wonderful. The study guide is a helpful tool that I think is a "must have" to go with this book if science is a challenging subject for people.Human Anatomy & Physiology (Study Guide)

5-0 out of 5 stars Physiology Coloring Book
The coloring book is extremely helpful. There were some aspects of Physiology that I was having a difficult time grasping simply reading material from text books and listening to lectures, the coloring book has made understanding many concepts "childs play". I highly recommend this as a supplement to any anatomy/physiology (or even biology) course.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent study aide
If you're a visual learner this book is an excellent addition to any physiology course. It's actually fun and it really does reinforce what you're learning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Physiology Coloring Book
Used copy,i will not purchase another used copy coloring book. The book is in good condition but it would have been better new and not to have pages colored by someone else.

1-0 out of 5 stars CANNOT BE USED WITH FELT PENS (AS SHOWN ON COVER)
I have the Anatomy coloring book and absolutely love the series. I use felt pens (the type of pen shown on the cover of both books) and they work perfectly in the anatomy book because *the back of every page is blank*.

I don't know why, but they made a MAJOR error in the Physiology coloring book by printing on both sides of the page. As soon as you color one page with felt tip pens, you will see that it leaks through and destroys the other side. This is such a basic element of the book that I don't understand why it was overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars best physiology book for med school
fantastic. This book is an awesome read. very well written, concise, great figures. I use this and the brs physio from costanzo and they are both great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written
This the most clearly written physiology book out there. Very concise with helpful figures. Costanzo knows her stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Physiology Text!
This is a great physiology text! This book helped me get through physiology, and although it is not the perfect medical text (it doesn't go into the detail that some of the other books do), it's very concise and clear in its explanations.I found it very easy to read and a great study resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a wonderful book to help supplement other texts in order to get a better understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book to accompany class.
This is a great companion to physiology class because you can often use this as your only source of reading and be okay if you also go to class, and the writing is very clear in most cases (there are some areas that could use more/better explanation, but not enough to warrant a deduction in the almighty star rating). Since most people get a review book to accompany the required text, Irecommend this one over BRS Physiology (Board Review Series) by the same author because in a time crunch you can read this book only and comprehend the most important points of physiology, even if you don't go to class. The BRS book is so abbreviated that is really only makes sense AFTER you've read a more thorough text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guyton prepares you for the shelf
I bought both this book and Costanzo for my first year physio class and loved the Guyton book.He explains everything very well so that you understand why systems work the way they do.Costanzo, while easy to read, tends to dumb the information down, and as a result, you end up memorizing facts instead of understanding concepts. At my medical school, we take the shelf as the final, and after reading Guyton I felt really prepared, whereas most of my classmates who read Costanzo felt dazed.

5-0 out of 5 stars great all around service
I purchased a medical book for my graduate school class. The book was used but still in pretty good condition as the post described. The price was a great deal in comparison with what the university is charging, and the fact that my funds are limited. Customer service was very helpful in answering my questions, and my book was promptly shipped the day after I ordered it even though it was during the busy holidays. I recommend Woody's Books definitely!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best physiology book
In my opinion this is the best physiology book out there. If you are just starting physiology this is the book to get. It is very good at explaining things and the fact that it never assumes you know something in any chapter makes it repeat many of the basic stuff - it just enters your head.

This is the best to learn as you go, to update your knowledge and to learn if you have time. However, the throughout descriptions and repetitions that make it so good, make it a bad book if you only have a few days to learn this. In that case I would recommend Ganong's.

5-0 out of 5 stars plethora of images aptly supplement the text
This is the textbook used in my bioengineering physiology class, and overall, it thus a great job of covering the basics of physiology without going too deep into the details. You get a nice view of the big picture and even get a lot of help understanding the concepts because of all the figures and images that they have included in this book. This would thus be an appropriate textbook if you're teaching yourself physiology as it applies to humans.

If you're looking for something that goes into more detail, more appropriate for a medical or professional bookshelf, I highly suggest checking out Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology. It is a book that will certainly be a great addition to the bookshelf of physicians and bioengineers alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Badly written.
This book is really hard to plough through. It's not written in an energetic way -- it's enthusiastic, but not particularly bright. Sort of Gee whiz, but not scholarly. Very lame writing. Not great use of diagrams either, though there are a lot of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent course, Excellent book
I took Systems Physiology from Widmaier (the author of this book) and the course was phenomenal. The book served as an excellent reference and an exciting read. The only real downside to the book is there is so much interesting information that it is easy to get sidetracked when you are trying to study. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
The leading textbook for undergraduate exercise physiology courses, Physiology of Sport and Exercise, is back in an updated fourth edition that is better than ever after extensive external reviews of the previous edition by nine content experts. Renowned authors Jack Wilmore and David Costill add the expertise of W. Larry Kenney to bring a fresh perspective to the organization and content of the fourth edition.

Building on the positive feedback of previous editions, Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, presents the complex relationship between human physiology and exercise in a format that is more comprehensive for students than other comparable texts. Ease of reading and understanding is the cornerstone for this popular text, and students will experience a depth and breadth of content balanced with unique and effective learning features:

  • Online learning. The text is automatically packaged with an access code for the online student guide. With the inclusion of the access code in the text, students will be reminded to access the Web site more readily. The convenient Web site format of the student guide allows students to practice, review, and develop knowledge and skills about the physiology of sport and exercise.
  • Accessible layout. The book is divided into seven parts, each with opening text that briefly describes the contents of the chapters in that part. Chapter outlines with page numbers help students locate material, including the related online study guide activities.
  • Keys to comprehension. In each chapter, key points and key terms are highlighted. The key terms are listed at the end of the chapter and defined in the glossary, thus increasing students' opportunities for recall, transfer of information, and self-testing.
  • Review and reflection. Review boxes scattered throughout each chapter remind students of the major points presented. Study questions allow students to test their knowledge of the chapter's contents. Reminders of available study guide activities encourage students to explore additional learning opportunities.
  • Reference and extended study. A comprehensive glossary and a thorough index help students navigate both the text and subject matter. Plus, a listing of references and selected readings provide additional information about topics of special interest.
  • Abbreviations and conversions. A list of common abbreviations on the inside front cover and a list of conversions on the inside back cover of the text provide a quick and easy reference for students while they complete labs and assignments.
In an effort to reduce "backpack bulge," the fourth edition has been carefully streamlined to offset the addition of new chapters or pages. Updated research, modernized artwork, and a reorganization of material provide a focused and effective presentation of concepts within a slightly smaller--and lighter--textbook. Chapters regarding nutrition and body composition are now combined to reduce information overlap, and references and selected readings from each chapter are grouped at the end of the text.

The authors, all distinguished researchers and past presidents of the American College of Sports Medicine, combine their expertise to deliver a level of technical content superior to that in previous editions with the inclusion of new and updated topics:
  • New information regarding exercise training principles and the adaptations in muscle, hormonal control, neural control, metabolism, and cardiorespiratory function with both resistance training and aerobic and anaerobic training
  • A more in-depth presentation of the body's adaptations in hot and cold environments and at altitude
  • Updated content on how general principles of exercise and sport physiology are specifically applied to children and adolescents, older individuals, and women
  • The latest research in exercise prescription for health and fitness, including the unique role of physical activity for rehabilitation and the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes
To facilitate a more integrated learning experience, both students and instructors can take advantage of the online ancillaries included in the fourth edition of Physiology of Sport and Exercise. The free online student study guide offers an improved interface and new learning activities that complement each chapter in the book. Additionally, helpful study guide reminders and the inclusion of an access code within the book prompt students to access the online guide to practice, review, and develop their understanding of chapter concepts.

Students can also use the guide's dynamic and interactive learning activities to conduct experiments outside the lab. Key concepts are reinforced as students conduct self-made experiments and record their own physiological responses to exercise. In addition, the study guide offers access links to scientific and professional journals as well as organization and career information.

One convenient Web address gives instructors access to an updated instructor guide, presentation package, and test package. The "plug-and-play" presentation package includes all graphics and content photos, plus PowerPoint slides with key points, which can be modified to suit individual teaching styles and a variety of class structures. Both the test package and instructor guide include resources and teaching aids designed to decrease lecture and test preparation time and increase pedagogical effectiveness.

Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, stands alone as the best, most comprehensive resource framing the latest research findings in a reader-friendly format. This winning combination makes it easier--and more engaging--than ever for students to develop their understanding of the body's marvelous abilities to perform various types and intensities of exercise and sport, to adapt to stressful situations, and to improve its physiological capacities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good and interesting
The book goes a little deeper into the world of humans and sport. It touches on common themes like cell/muscle anatomy, energy systems, adaptations to training, nutrition etc. If you have read on these topics in the past, you'll find this book helpful as it reviews the basics and then probes just a little bit deeper into the subjects. One of my better school books :-)
It is a technical book with good illustrations and pictures. I would grade it as an intermediate level material. You can read this as a beginner but it would be a slow read as you'd have to get a understanding of all the concepts...It is like reading an upgraded version of college biology - first time it's a lot of studying, the second time you'll review and pic up on new little details...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review not from an exercise physiologist.
I'm electrical engineer but I enjoy practicing and learning about sports and exercise physiology.
I consider reading this book better than buying thousands of sport/fitness magazines because the last one are not, in general, scientifically founded and full of wrong (market driven an potentially dangerous for your health) information. Of course, if you are not a exercise physiologist or do not have an undergraduate degree in correlated area you can have some difficult to cope with the book, but a basic knowledge in chemistry and biology can help to overcome most of them and learn the foundations.
Additionally, the book offers hundreds of references which can be helpful for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference material
This book is excellent consolidation of reference material which is sensibly divided into logical chapters.

It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to exercise physiology
This book is well-illustrated and easy to read, but it is really a basic text, not the end-all.For example, in the section on nutrition, the authors recommend that carbohydrates should constitute 50% of an athlete's daily calories, and yet they neglect the fact that so many people in thiscountry do not tolerate carbohydrates well.Nutrition really needs to beadjusted to the individual's metabolism and needs, and there is really noone set magic formula that will work for everyone. But, if you keep thatin mind and are looking for a good introductory text, this will serveadmirably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Exercise Book
A good physiology exercise book is so important to understanding the body and how all of the different systems work together. This book does a great job of explaining concepts by colorful graphics and pictures. If your anadvid athlete like myself you will enjoy this book.I was always chasingthe new fads in exercise or trying the latest diet to trim down, they neverworked. You must first understand some of the complexities of the humanbody.Likewise, if you want to tweak your car's engine you must firstunderstand some of the most basic principles of a car engine before addingexpensive and useless gadgets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
This is simply the best in its class--a foundation of my medical education. The diagrams are excellent.Text explanations are clear, detailed, precise and, most importantly, succinct. When I die, bury me with Vander's Renal Physiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Renal Physiology Made Easy
Real Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school renal unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the renal system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book
Very good book, everything is simplified, easy introduction into subject, it is almost like being spoon fed.
Pathologic correlation's are given, it does not have all the biochemistry but major subjects are covered and author has conceptualized that makes everything easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book to have re: the beans
For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Book
This is the only reference book I have and need on Exercise Physiology. Most useful to me are chapters on performance enhacement, high altitude acclimatisation and physical training for seniors. The first few introductory chapters and the first few pages of each chapter remind me of my basic life sciences. The authors then focus on the application of cell biology to training. The thing I like most about this book, is that there is no "guru talk". Every piece of advice is based on currect research. The book is divided into 7 sections. 1. Nutrition, 2. Energy production, 3. Energy Delivery & Utilisation, 3. Enhancement of Energy Capacity, 4. Environmental Stress, 5. Body Composition & Weight Control, 7. Successful Aging, Disease Prevention. It's a very thick book, but the paper quality is high and the colourful illustrations make it a joy to read. However, this is not simple book for the average man on the street. There is nothing sensational here - just pure science. Readers without a background in the life sciences may not be able to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars "the book" on exercise physiology
I am a Personal Training manager with a Physical Education undergraduate degree and Health Preservation and Rehabilitation graduate degree.
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: www.connection.LWW.com/go/mcardle

5-0 out of 5 stars The Winner!
Although it runs to 1158 pages, this winning book, long recognized as THE leading exercise physiology text, stays succinct and engaging--and not one page too long. A key asset of this book is its close engagement with the scientific literature, which appears throughout in the form of unobtrusive but crucial little superscripted numbers that cite published studies. The references exceed in both depth and richness other exercise physiology texts like Baechle's very good "Essentials of Strength and Conditioning," Power and Howley's popular "Exercise Physiology," and certainly the authors' own 678-page "Essentials of Exercise Physiology," a shorter text that breezily dumps its references at the end of each chapter without numbering them or citing them in context. The definitive coverage of many popular fitness subjects, from exercise selection to steroids to nutrition, make this masterful book not only a pre-eminent text, but great reading for any consumer who, tired of the ridiculous claims of the diet and fitness industry, seeks authoritative answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowhow behind fitness
This book is a great help in understanding what is happening within the body conerning sports training and nutrition. It is based on uncountable research studies and presented in a very readable form with ample graphics illustrations. The book helped me not only to understand more, but also to improve fitness and even loose some weight. It goes very far beyond compared to what one gets told in fitness centers. The main approach of the book is based on energy considerations. Understanding how the body handles energy makes it possible to describe the effects of exercising and performance much more deeply. I would recommend this book to every exerciser, who likes to improve physically and understand background matters. Basically, it's a textbook for sports students. But people outside, like myself, can greatly benefit from it, as well. ... Read more
