4-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Anatomy learning tool
I bought this at the urging of my Advanced Anatomy instructor. The product arrived in a timely manner and worked consistently.

3-0 out of 5 stars IP not for a Mac
Putting this CD in my Mac does not work so well; pictures & sound sometimes don't happen or move. Some chapter's speed through without you clicking to the next page. Quiz's sometimes don't work either. Best if used on PC.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lower level Physiology
This CD is ok for an intro to physiology. For a professional level physiology (Dental, Medical...), this does not go anywhere near topics covered in class! OR at least nowhere near as good as the Simbryo software covers embryology. I would highly recommend it to a high school student trying to take an AP test and a college student to have for multiple biology classes (bio 1-2) or even intro to physio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Love all of these videos - great for AP and nursing school - always go back to them.Would like to see more on the liver and reproductive system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly as posted
This is a very helpful tool for student taking Anatomy and Physiology course. The animation, interaction and quiz help to understand the topic better, as some professor either talked too fast or too soft during lecture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good for my learning!!!
I have this book always with me since I am a massage therapist and sometimes i want to explain to my clients what i was talking about during the session, and what muscles or tendons etc... we were working on, i think is a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent :)
This is thee best anatomy and physiology reference and it's pocket size so you can take it anywhere. Personally, i carry it in my backpack and occasionally in my purse. it actually makes my book a lot easier to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but lacking.
Overall really good reference. Very clear and detailed. My only complaint is that it doesn't include a section for Embryology, thus the 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very worth it.
As a military provider - I wanted to get something for the medics that was a small anatomy reference. This is perfect. It is thick (1" maybe) but very thourough.Better than pocket cards. It has some limited pathophysiology - enough to educate without overdoing it for the intended audience.I would definately buy again for the medics.Great to reference and show/explain things to patients as well.
Very happy with the product.Medics loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
My wifes review: This book is great. Mine has 265 pages..copyright in 2009 (not including index). It has every system and more (13 tabs)...It was great in school, and its great now that I work in a hospital--I can carry it in my pocket--I just love it. Exactly what I was looking for. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great companion
This workbook showed me how much I absorbed reading and where I need to work harder! Thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Haven't read much yet
I started on the first chapter and realized that it is a good workbook for those students already in Anatomy and Phsiology. It's seems like a good book for when you are taking the class, but not for trying to prepare for the class itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good buy
I am starting my first year of nursing school and needed some brushing up on my A&P. This book breaks everything down for you. It is simple enough to easily understand but doesn't become so easy that you are actually learning nothing. I would totally recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars College Student
I'm a middle age woman who returned to college and needed help with my Anatomy class this book was a very big help. I couldn't have passed the class without this book.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The leading textbook for undergraduate exercise physiology courses, Physiology of Sport and Exercise, is back in an updated fourth edition that is better than ever after extensive external reviews of the previous edition by nine content experts. Renowned authors Jack Wilmore and David Costill add the expertise of W. Larry Kenney to bring a fresh perspective to the organization and content of the fourth edition.

Building on the positive feedback of previous editions, Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, presents the complex relationship between human physiology and exercise in a format that is more comprehensive for students than other comparable texts. Ease of reading and understanding is the cornerstone for this popular text, and students will experience a depth and breadth of content balanced with unique and effective learning features:

  • Online learning. The text is automatically packaged with an access code for the online student guide. With the inclusion of the access code in the text, students will be reminded to access the Web site more readily. The convenient Web site format of the student guide allows students to practice, review, and develop knowledge and skills about the physiology of sport and exercise.
  • Accessible layout. The book is divided into seven parts, each with opening text that briefly describes the contents of the chapters in that part. Chapter outlines with page numbers help students locate material, including the related online study guide activities.
  • Keys to comprehension. In each chapter, key points and key terms are highlighted. The key terms are listed at the end of the chapter and defined in the glossary, thus increasing students' opportunities for recall, transfer of information, and self-testing.
  • Review and reflection. Review boxes scattered throughout each chapter remind students of the major points presented. Study questions allow students to test their knowledge of the chapter's contents. Reminders of available study guide activities encourage students to explore additional learning opportunities.
  • Reference and extended study. A comprehensive glossary and a thorough index help students navigate both the text and subject matter. Plus, a listing of references and selected readings provide additional information about topics of special interest.
  • Abbreviations and conversions. A list of common abbreviations on the inside front cover and a list of conversions on the inside back cover of the text provide a quick and easy reference for students while they complete labs and assignments.
In an effort to reduce "backpack bulge," the fourth edition has been carefully streamlined to offset the addition of new chapters or pages. Updated research, modernized artwork, and a reorganization of material provide a focused and effective presentation of concepts within a slightly smaller--and lighter--textbook. Chapters regarding nutrition and body composition are now combined to reduce information overlap, and references and selected readings from each chapter are grouped at the end of the text.

The authors, all distinguished researchers and past presidents of the American College of Sports Medicine, combine their expertise to deliver a level of technical content superior to that in previous editions with the inclusion of new and updated topics:

  • New information regarding exercise training principles and the adaptations in muscle, hormonal control, neural control, metabolism, and cardiorespiratory function with both resistance training and aerobic and anaerobic training
  • A more in-depth presentation of the body's adaptations in hot and cold environments and at altitude
  • Updated content on how general principles of exercise and sport physiology are specifically applied to children and adolescents, older individuals, and women
  • The latest research in exercise prescription for health and fitness, including the unique role of physical activity for rehabilitation and the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes
To facilitate a more integrated learning experience, both students and instructors can take advantage of the online ancillaries included in the fourth edition of Physiology of Sport and Exercise. The free online student study guide offers an improved interface and new learning activities that complement each chapter in the book. Additionally, helpful study guide reminders and the inclusion of an access code within the book prompt students to access the online guide to practice, review, and develop their understanding of chapter concepts.

Students can also use the guide's dynamic and interactive learning activities to conduct experiments outside the lab. Key concepts are reinforced as students conduct self-made experiments and record their own physiological responses to exercise. In addition, the study guide offers access links to scientific and professional journals as well as organization and career information.

Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, stands alone as the best, most comprehensive resource framing the latest research findings in a reader-friendly format. This winning combination makes it easier--and more engaging--than ever for students to develop their understanding of the body's marvelous abilities to perform various types and intensities of exercise and sport, to adapt to stressful situations, and to improve its physiological capacities.

Includes an online student study guide!

Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, includes an online study guide with dynamic and interactive learning activities, all of which can be conducted outside the lab. The site offers self-rating checklists that allow students to target concepts they need extra help with and unique "My Notes" study aids that are customizable and can be saved to a student's computer. Activity feedback presents specific text page references to review for incorrect responses. Additional resources in the online study guide include glossary terms that are emphasized on their first appearance and include a pop-up definition, quizzes that test students' knowledge of the material, and links to professional journals as well as organization and career information to extend students' knowledge beyond the school environment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book!
I bought this for a class I am taking, but as I started reading it I quickly found it so interesting and well done that I would not stop.
Ended up reading the whole book over a couple of days. It has a lot of excellent info and great illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book!
has everything u need to know about exercise physiology and has summaries within the chapter to help refresh you as you read along.

4-0 out of 5 stars Received in timely manner.
I am very satisfied with my order. I received the book in the time specified. And it was in great condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars I always buy on Amazon.com
I have been buying my books from Amazon.com for a few years now.I am a graduate student and money is tight, so I have been able to trust that Amazon.com will always have cheap new & used books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine college textbook
I had a good time reading this very fine textbook on exercise physiology from cover to cover. It was at the level of detail and academic rigor that I was seeking. I understand that this is an introductory text used at the Kinesiology Department of the University of Minnesota. I am not an athlete, but rather an ordinary layperson just wanting to exercise to get fit. While the research cited in the text focuses more on athletes, there was plenty of information for non-athletes.
The book presents a great deal of technical information, but it uses a lot of modern visual techniques to help that information go down easy. The book is full of charts, graphs, diagrams, and pictures which are great help to a visually oriented person such as myself. I found other visual elements very attractive, such as layout, text boxes ("in focus" and "in review" summaries), appropriate typefaces, and so forth.
The authors go to some effort to make the material interesting and manage to convey their excitement about their topics to the reader. I highly recommend this book, whether you are a student or an educated layperson wanting to become even more educated on the most important subject of exercise physiology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not good for Shelf exam
I bought this book as a major source of studying for my physio shelf exam and that was a big mistake. While this book is a great read, and written very well, it in no way covers the detail that you have to know for the physio shelf exam. It focused a lot on problems and equations which is good because that was the part that I had the most trouble with, but in the SHELF, and probably in the USMLE, there are very few calculations you have to do. I think there were only 2 questions where I had to perform calculations on my shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great book. I really trust this author. Dr. Costanzo's material is really easy read and her charts are awesome! This was also the recommended reading for medical school and it really helped me during my first year of medical school. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any medical physiology course
This books provides clinical cases and problems that will help anyone pass a boardexam or graduate level medical physiology course. They key is to understand every case and practice all the problems. This book changed my class average by an entire letter grade!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
The product was shipped in a timely manner; it is in excellent condition as promised.I would buy from this seller in the future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I have to disagree with the other reviewers on this. If I could go back I would have gotten the BRS Physiology book, as opposed to this cases and problems. This book is only really effective perhaps as an add on to the BRS book. Each system has about 6-8 cases in it, and a lot of material is not covered. I was especially annoyed by the lack of reproductive system material (which consisted of 3 cases dealing with ambiguous sex syndromes). What about normal reproductive physiology? This book highlights the big points, and the explanations to the questions are very thorough, but if you are looking for an all in one comprehensive book, Id choose the BRS physio. This just seems like an attempt to sell more books by taking some info from the other book and putting it in vignette question/answer form ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Simplicity
I wish all textbooks could be like this one. Very readable; very well organized, and it is no longer than it needs to be. Beginning with functional anatomy, it moves onto cover big-picture functions of the kidney, and then with that context moves in for a more indepth look at each portion, separating function into the fates and control of various ions and other molecules. Why and how the kidney does what it does, where it does it, when it does it makes sense. Then all of a sudden, I found myself predicting rather than memorizing how various diuretics work and how the kidneys play a part in correcting (or causing) various acid-base disturbances.

Vander's Renal is definitely in my top 3 all-time favorite textbooks. When I compare the thorough simplicity of how Vander's Renal Physiology covers the kidney compared to the general physiology texts, there is absolutely no comparison.

I purchased both the paperback and Kindle versions: As the paperback has only two color printing, all of the diagrams and tables translate very well into the greyscale Kindle. The Kindle version is very well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, simple overview
If you are ordering this as a medical student, know that it is not nearly as thorough as you probably need. This is a tiny little book that gives a good overview of renal phys in a very easy, step by step manner. If you have a physiology review text, or another physiology book, stick with that.I liked the book, but for the money, and given the time constraints we are all under, suggest skipping it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Very, very minimal overview-not worth it
I'm in my first year of Chiropractic school and this covered about the first lecture on our section on muscles and the first lecture on our section about the cardiovascular system, and the rest of the time the class is much more detailed.I'd love for someone to give me a recommendation on a text for simplifying the complexity of muscles and the cardiovascular system.(The microbiology book in this series is AWESOME though!)

Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars thanks Dr. G
this book explains many areas i struggled w/ in a different way.before purchasing this book, i found myself getting lost in the details w/ other texts.this book tackles difficult topics & is highly focused on info that is clinically relevant. it's truly a different approach & painlessly short ;) i wish someone would have recommended it sooner.
also- for anyone taking neuro, i highly recommend clinical neuroanatomy by the same author (i am reading that prior to taking the course & feel almost ready/prepared for the challenge- rather than slightly terrified!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars clinical physiology made very simple...and interesting
My book arrived quicker than expected and in much better condition than portrayed.Very good experience with this vendor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but very basic, overview of physiology.
I am a medical student and found this review book to be a nice supplement to other physiology review texts. However, it is not as complete as the Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple from the same series.

There are significant gaps in information that would be necessary to know for Step One.However, if you are a person that needs a conversational style of review to get the story behind physiology, this is an excellent starting point. One really nice feature is that it has a nice thorough review of neurophysiology. This was an unexpected, but welcome surprise!

Happy studying!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start for boards review
This is a good first source in beginning your Step 1 review. It'll jog your memory before you dive into other review books. It also has very helpful ways of explaining physiology concepts (except for the pulmonary chapter) which you may have had trouble understanding before. This book has less of the helpful pictures compared to their Microbiology MRS book, but the text is still very good and easy to understand. If you have trouble with physio, try this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowlege + Effort = Success
I was tired of reading the fitness magazines only to get a few bits of information along with a bunch of hype. There is more information in this book than in a 1000 fitness magazines. This book will give you the principles that will provide a sound base on which to build a routine that will help you accomplish your goals.

This Exercise Physiology book is essential for anyone who is looking to study their health and fitness. Its all in here somewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise Physiology: Energy, Nutrition, and Human Performance
Many pictures, table, and related figure were sufficient to understand in physiological mechanism in condition to exercising. Especially, the last chapter was very impressed in my insufficient knowledge of molecular and cellular for exercise physiology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing textbook
I do not recommend this book at all.It is very poorly written, very confusing, and does not do a adequate job of explaining the complex mechanisms of the kidney. Go find a different textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST RENAL PHYSIOLOGY BOOK I HAVE EVER READ
Worst renal physio book i ever read. FULL OF ERRORS that are essential to understanding physio. Whoever gave the book 5 stars is smoking crack/ isn't a med student/ or most likely is one of the authors/ a fake reviewer.

DO NOT bUY THIS BOOK!!!!! I thought it would be okay and i would pick up on the errors but they are seriously terrible

2-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable
The first four chapters of this book provide an 'okay' review of renal water and sodium balance. The organization is acceptable, and the figures and their descriptions are informative. Then at chapter 5 the book begins to die, struggles through chapter 9 and then finishes with chapter 10 which returns to the 'okay' quality of the first chapters. What kills this book is the poor quality of the writing.

Which ever author wrote chapters 5 through 9 doesn't understand that a paragraph requires structure and a direction. Most of these chapters are poorly constructed statement sentences which lack any flow or continuity except that they all talk about the kidney. Then in chapter 7 the writer discovers connecting phrases. However they are not used correctly. Words like "thus" and "therefore" are not logical conclusions from previous statements. As a student this is especially frustrating because the only way to learn the information is to memorize (as opposed to learning by understanding). Another problem with the writing in this book is that it uses excessively complex sentence construction, even in when the concepts are clear, simple, and concise to begin with. In total the poor writing found in the majority of this books make it impossible to read and learn from.

The only potentially redeeming qualities of this book are questions found at the end of each chapter and the cases found in the appendix. However, because I am only a student I cant attest to accuracy of the answers provided (In truth I can't comment on the accuracy of any part of the book).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Physiology
Book does a good job in explaining the main physiological points. Structure of book is around different functions (NaCl Transport) rather than speaking to specific renal structures and describing those functions. Does not have a good description of renal structure, but definitely enough to understand the physiology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful.
This book has been hands-down the worst explanation of renal physiology I've ever seen. Rather than discussing the "big picture" and then drilling down into the details, showing how they fit into the scheme of things, it goes straight to the details, which are very confusing. The lack of color is also a problem, since there are shaded boxes which could mean either extra details or a clinical scenario - there's no distinction between the two. I got more out of (gasp) Rhoades and Tanner, and finally understood what was going on in Costanzo (the "big" text, not the BRS). ... Read more

Product Description

The Second Edition of Pulmonary Physiology and Pathophysiology presents normal and abnormal pulmonary function in the same case-based format that has made the first edition a favorite among students. Each chapter begins with a clinical case study of diseases typically seen by practitioners. The cases are followed by a discussion and breakdown of the physiology, pathophysiology, anatomy, pharmacology, and pathology for each disease, and a question-and-answer section. This edition has an infectious diseases chapter, updates on asthma pathogenesis and bronchodilators, and user-friendly features such as chapter openers, chapter outlines, "key points" summary boxes, and board-formatted questions and answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pulmonary Physiology and Pathophysiology: An Integrated, Case-Based Approach
This book is readable and concise. Physiology and pathophysiology are applied to each case study. However, the chest X-ray findings are not reproduced well in the figures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Easy
This is really a lovely book for clearing up concepts in pulmonary physiology. Dr West, one of the globally famous physiology author, integrated pulmonary pathology with the underlining physiology in this thin book. He tried to help students understand what goes wrong in numerous common lung and airway problems with the interesting cases he presented. As he pointed out in the preface, he intended to make this book as concise as possible in order to fit the modern cirriculum by sparing more time for students to deal with the expanding syllabus in molecular science!! ... With Saladin, students engage in the story of anatomy and physiology.

Memorable stories must be effective in multiple ways. The story must paint a strong visual picture. The story must weave in tools to make the reader remember important events and understand their impact. Ken Saladin weaves graceful descriptions of human anatomy and physiology processes together with carefully selected clinical applications and fascinating stories from the history of medicine and evolutionary medicine to create a multi-layered story about the human body.A consistent set of chapter learning tools helps students identify and retain key concepts while the stunning visual program provides a realistic view of body structures and processes. The fifth edition is further improved by a complete integration of the text with extensive digital teaching and learning tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compare and save!
This is a required text for A&P 1&2. The campus bookstore sells it at $213.35. Buying this book from Amazon I saved $53.61, 25%! I also didn't have to sacrifice quaility since the book is new.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for class or personal study!
I bought this book on Amazon for my college classes, because they had the cheapest "new book" price that I could find. This book is great. The pictures and diagrams throughout the book are superior! I haven't even started my class yet, and I can't help but flip through this book looking at what all it has to offer. I am very excited to be using it this year.

If you are a college student and need this particular book for class, the only thing I recommend is making sure you get the right book listed for your class. This one is the Fifth Edition, Copyright 10 of Saladin's books and it is the US Version (not international). I didn't know that there were different versions until my husband pointed it out to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Love Love

I ordered this for my daughter's anatomy class. Found out a few hours after I had ordered it that I had ordered the wrong book. Immediately sent email to the seller, but received no reply.
