Book Description
BRS Physiology Cases and Problems, Second Edition includes 56 case-based problems and questions that encourage medical students to integrate, problem solve, and think critically. Organized by body system, each chapter provides case studies, questions, and problems followed by complete explanations and solutions including diagrams, graphs, and charts. The book contains most relevant medical physiology and pathophysiology information, and integrates complex information across organ systems. It is helpful for traditional course material and a valuable tool for a clinical vignette review in preparation for the USMLE Step 1 exam. This revised and updated edition includes new cases and more illustrations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I have to disagree with the other reviewers on this. If I could go back I would have gotten the BRS Physiology book, as opposed to this cases and problems. This book is only really effective perhaps as an add on to the BRS book. Each system has about 6-8 cases in it, and a lot of material is not covered. I was especially annoyed by the lack of reproductive system material (which consisted of 3 cases dealing with ambiguous sex syndromes). What about normal reproductive physiology? This book highlights the big points, and the explanations to the questions are very thorough, but if you are looking for an all in one comprehensive book, Id choose the BRS physio. This just seems like an attempt to sell more books by taking some info from the other book and putting it in vignette question/answer form

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for USMLE Step 1
I had this book during first year phys and only did a few cases from it (not enough time). But once I started reviewing for Step 1, I went through the whole book - fantastic!

I started my review for each systems chapter in First Aid by doing the corresponding cases in Costanzo. This gave me an in-depth, conceptual review, which is what you need for Step 1. And, it's hard to have the discipline to work through the physiology; these cases help you really understand the material. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taking the course and using it
Just wish I ahd more time to go over this book. It's an excellent preparation for course exams. It helped boost my grade. They do go a bit boring on the mathematical explanations and calculations.

5-0 out of 5 stars recommended
An excellent way to test your understanding of basic concepts in physiology.A great way to supplement your physiology/medical school courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars brings it all together!
This is a fantastic book for med school physiology, especially if you find lecture boring and need a book to bring the dry material into a clinical context.the book presents classic presentations and data, asks questions about the physiology behind the symptoms, and then explains the answers. the explanations are laid out simply using nicely worded paragraphs and incorporating all those nasty equations so that they make sense! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Organization and Boring
My biggest problem with this book lies directly with the fact that teachers use it when you BEGIN learning the basics of anatomy and physiology. Instead of focusing on the basics, this book has a lot of unnecessary "window-dressing". Not only that, but the author could have shortened the explanations; why talk about a topic in 10 pages when it could easily be said in 3?

By going on and on, this book only makes remembering the informationmore difficult. The book says "Fundamentals", but really it should be saying "Everything-in-Between"! Not to mention the price is horrendous (though it has gotten much better). PLEASE college teachers, if you wish to help your students learn efficiently, use a book that doesn't turn the subject of anatomy and physiology into a bore-and-tedium fest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Want to save money?
This book is incredibly expensive.I've seen it listed for $200+ at some stores.I bought a brand new, shrink-wrapped "international version" for $37 plus $30 shipping (TOTAL $67).I know you're thinking that the shipping was high, but I received the book 36 hours after I ordered it and was thankful! It came with 3 sealed CD's and the online access code. The international version appears to be exactly the same except it is a soft cover and has a orange colored border surrounding that same picture on the cover. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH INFORMATION CRAMMED INTO ONE BOOK!

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE WHAT YOUR ARE PROMISED FOR YOUR PURCHASE
I purchased this book NEW and in good faith & because it was the title required for my anatomy class. (from the college bookstore)
The company NEVER made good on their promise to allow me access to use their website. They provided the professor an invalid access code.
I can only have access if I send them MORE money to purchase access.
I ALREADY GAVE THEM 150+ for the NEW text, lab manual, cd's & entry into their website. It feels like I am being SCAMMED although I am pretty sure this is not their intention.
I am 1/3 of the way done w/the book & class & DISSAPPOINTED W/MY PURCHASE.
I HOPE TEACHERS FIND AN ALTERNATIVE BOOK TO REQUIRE FOR A&P CLASS.

1-0 out of 5 stars if you have to throw away $150...
If you actually buy this book you're paying for the illustrations. Don't waste your time actually reading it, the presentation of the material is ponderous and completely unimaginative. The chapter on immunology is one of the worst I've seen anywhere.

The COVER of the book speaks volumes for its content. I'd be afraid to be seen in public with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent survey
Not a medic and only superficially knowledgeable, I was looking for a summary of pulmonary functioning. This book is very helpful, especially the questions & answers. It is perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need for pulmonary phys.
An amazing book on the how pulmonary physiology really works. Extremely detailed and the ever so important quick read. You will not have to get another book concerning this topic. I may be a little biased as Levitzky was a professor at my school and I had first hand experience with him and his book. However, I was reassured when I saw 3 different Pulm/CC docs with his book on their shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, even better in person!
This is an excellent textbook. It basically mirrors Dr. L's lectures. If you've never heard him speak, you're missing out.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUCH BETTER THAN WEST'S
This is a great pulmonary physiology text that exceeds the commonly used text West text in both content and teaching. This text brings the concepts together whereas the text by John West often leaves key connections out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy and convoluted
I had to use this book because it was required for the physiology course I took, and the test questions were taken from it.However, it is the most sloppy textbook I have ever dealt with.It is so cryptical and convoluted, it actually makes the material HARDER to learn. (For example, bizarre acronyms are introduced in the answers to sample problems that are never even been discussed in the text itself.)The different sections of the book refer you back and forth to one another without explaining anything in a basic way.In addition, the index is terrible, so you can't even try to dope things out on your own.I would advise you to not get this book if you can avoid it, especially if you are a student trying to learn this material for the first time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start for boards review
This is a good first source in beginning your Step 1 review. It'll jog your memory before you dive into other review books. It also has very helpful ways of explaining physiology concepts (except for the pulmonary chapter) which you may have had trouble understanding before. This book has less of the helpful pictures compared to their Microbiology MRS book, but the text is still very good and easy to understand. If you have trouble with physio, try this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Use as directed, separate the forest from the trees!
I'm a first year Med student and have found this book to be a valuable resource. The explanations are perfect for gaining a broad understanding of often difficult subjects before diving into the textbooks and journals.

The chapters about fluid/electrolyte balance and immunology are incredible, clarifying concepts that I had struggled through previously. In addition, clinical correlations augment the discussion of normal physiology, keeping things real for those us getting early clinical exposure on the wards. The author implements useful drawings and flowcharts that further simplify complex material. For example, the immunology "cartoon" flowchart is perfect for understanding the central role of CD4 cells in binding to an MHC2, and depicting the numerous downstream events of adaptive immunity. In takes about an hour or two to plow through a chapter (and actually understand everything), but in the end, you have a great foundation that can be enhanced through lectures or PBL depending on your program.

Regarding the negative reviews below, what do these people expect from such a thin book? The author even admits in his preface that it should be used in conjunction with a text. I don't feel this book is intended for USMLE preparation or as a "study guide" for a medical school exam. These reviewers would be better served with a large spoon, a copy of Guyton, and a bib.

Clinical Phys made ridiculously simple dumbs down complex subjects and gives you a big picture understanding of how things work- this is the first book I've come across that makes learning physiology simple and efficient. In addition, I've found the Radiology, Anatomy and Microbiology books in this series to be particularly useful so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
As with other books by Dr. Goldberg, this one is nothing short of miraculous! Through a systems-based approach, an otherwise complicated and tedious subject is transformed into an accesible and enjoyable voyage. Quite honestly, you should leave your standard thick physiology texts in the corner to use for curls or bench pressing... this book ABSOLUTELY encompasses the key knowledge of physiology in a fraction of the time. It seems like a gimmick, but it isn't. Having graduated from med school a few years ago, I can still say with authority that this book will serve you well into the future, not to mention on your next test, which will undoubtedly include mostly clinically oriented questions which, in turn, can ALL be answered after a careful and thoughtful review of this book. Don't waste any more time... read this one first! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I agree with other reviewers of this ancillary text. It's too incomplete even to function as a quick study guide.Major topics are glossed over and vital areas are missed entirely.A vastly better choice is the STARS Physiology text. The Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple book is simple NOT as good as others in this series, especially the Microbiology text which is excellent.Med students - don't waste your money on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I know it is not a complete textbook, but the information is "too incomplete", there is many important stuff left out and so many irrelevant information in it, it lacks order and needs well placedsubtitles to make reading easier. The ECG and the diagram on pulmonarycapacities is good, but this book is really not worth it. It is possible tofind a better choice. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars missing alot of detail....
Wow, I am really suprised this book garnered as much positive feedback as it has. I am a nursing major, and I was apalled at the lack of detail in this book. I ended up using the A&P text from my 201 class for the majority of this class. Maybe it was the questions my instructor asked, but I constanatly had to go to other sources in order to find the information I needed. If anyone finds themself in this situation, Ken Saladin's text by the same name is the best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best A&P book for nursing majors
This is a required reading text for anatomy and physiology I and II at the college I attend, and I have nothing but praise for the author and illustrators of this book.It is as comprehensive as A&P can get, and as difficult as the material is to learn, it is broken down into systems so that it is not too overwhelming.

The reason why I give this text 5 stars isn't because of the text -- but the CD and online access that is included.Instead of just seeing diagrams of the heart on paper, the CD makes the heart come "alive" by enabling the viewer to see the heart chambers pumping and blood flowing through the major arteries. This is just one of many examples of how learning is enriched with the CD.I could not have made an A in A&P without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I bought the book the first time because I had to.I bought it the second time because I wanted to.

I am a Nursing student. I had to have two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology for Nursing.Like most students, I sold the book back to the bookstore after the second semester.MISTAKE!About half-way through my first semester of Nursing I found myself wishing I had the old A&P book again. So, I went and bought it.

If there is anything you want to know about A&P, this book has it!What a marvelous book!

It's not a book for the casual reader; find something else for that. But if you want to know the details of the body and how it works, BUY THIS BOOK!

Most of the chapters have a beginning that kinda describes the particular section of the body. The remainder of the chapter then goes into details, and I mean details - as much as you can possibly want.

I cannot imagine a better-written book anywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite textbooks
Although I'm not a big fan of college textbooks since they can be very long and tedious to read, this textbook is to the contrary. It had very relevent information relating to my college anatomy and physiology class that was right on pace with my college lectures. This is a good knowledge base for learning A and P. I especially liked the chapters on muscles and bones.Very interesting. However, when I study for college exams I usually also use study guides.I highly recommend Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies and for very to the point test preparation questions I found Anatomy and Physiology:Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and 2 to give me instant feedback of what I knew or didn't know for the test.Because of these books I did a lot better then I expected since I never had any prior teachings in anatomy and physiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Written to be Understood
I am in my second semester using Elaine N. Marieb's Human Anatomy & Physiology book. She has a great ability to take a very complicated subject and break it down so that it can be learned not just memorized. She doesn't skip the details that are important to learn. She makes it more understandable. This book will be a great reference for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect companion for Chiropractic College
I purchased this book to further my understanding of Guyton in chiropractic college (my background is chemical engineering).Though I read Guyton more than once, took maticulous notes from class and the text, I needed the Guyton Review to help fill the gaps I missed for part 1 board review.

I realized I needed this book during the physiology reviews for the chiro part 1 board exam. The questions in the Guyton Review are, in my opinion, based closely to what you would expect to see. They take you to the meat of the chapters so that you know what is important. That is a small price to pay for someone that may not have had the physiology background or needs to review.

5-0 out of 5 stars great condition!
I received my product promptly. The books were brand new and exactly what I ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must
Everyone must own this book. Not only does it provider concise and relative physiology but also how it relates to common diseases often seen in the OR. I really enjoy reading it and it is well put together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Concepts
I work with a lot of students needing help in, or remediating physiology and those retaking the boards.I have a number of copies of this book and loan them to students or use them to follow-up mini review sessions. They work quite well in this setting. For example, board re-take pass rate is 85% compared to 50% with Kaplan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for CRNA school
We used the Guyton text for a sizable portion of A&P and this review book correlates well with the text. It's most helpful to help make sure you actually understand concepts by providing questions from subject matter in the text.Possibly the most helpful feature: answers are given with rationale AND every question/answer is referenced with a page number/chapter in the text on where you would find the answer!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholastic perfection
I've been in an accredited university for fifteen years studying the intricacies of physiology. I have never come across a book that was executed to such perfection. The photos are astonishing in their clarity and intimate setting. The narration is concise and very clear, almost to the point where you want to phone the author and congratulate him on his accomplishment. If you are thinking of pursuing any kind of biological/medical field than I highly recommend this fine piece of art. It will soon be Shakespearean in its influence. Don't trust the simple words of my fellow plebian reviewers; this book is the second coming of the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A physiology instructor weighs in on this book
I have been teaching University-level physiology for over 10 years. I have used at least a dozen books, from the "essentials" to the "encyclopedic". For a one-semester course on physiology that emphasizes recurring mechanisms from a cellular and organ-level perspective, with a great introduction to ecological physiology thrown in, Eckert cannot be beat. In my experience, the vast majority of students respond better to Eckert's illustrations than to the endless flow charts that appear in most of the other books. It nicely fills the niche between "just the basics" essentials texts (which are simply not rigorous enough for biology majors) and the "every little detail" encyclopedic texts that most students find bewildering. If I had to learn animal physiology from just one textbook, this would be it; and I'd save the cell & molecular details from one of THOSE specialty texts instead. The ONLY criticism I have about Eckert is its nearly complete lack of consideration of the immune system.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a total waste
Poor illustration, lengthy text, and not very well updated

1-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible book!
The author can not explain the molecular aspects of biological processes well. The figures were fine but there are so many books that are far better than this. The author seriously needs to take some writing classes. I had to use another book in conjunction with this one, inorder to make sure I got the concepts correct. 4-0 out of 5 stars Owners' Manual for the Human Body
My anatomy teacher told us that a very high percentage of students that use this book fail the class.I don't know where he got this information, and after getting to know him, he might have been saying that to scare us into studying more. The material is very in depth, but it is also very clear.Personally, I really liked this textbook and the class - so much in fact that I sold the second-hand copy I used in class and bought a brand new one on Amazon for my personal library. It came with a CD that was very helpful, and also with a year of free access to an online site with excellent quizes and photographs.(At least it did when I bought mine)I have had occassion to refer back to it since I took the class some years ago, and expect to refer to it in the future as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard work!
Oh man! I studied countless hours with this book. It beats around the bush, gives an incredable amount of definitions and makes it boring! The pictures did not help at all, all I did was ready over and over and over and over again. There is a lot of understanding in anatomy and this book did not help at all. I would suggest taking anatomy at a community college where this book is not used

4-0 out of 5 stars worth the money
well I read other reviews regarding this book, many were not very helpful

Strenths- This book does a great job with muscular artistry, some of the details are comparable to netters atlas in visual details, not identification of mustles. The histo and physio are pretty decent, I also use histolgy by gartner and hyatt and BRS physio along with Gyuton for reference, althought not as detailed as those books, it does a great job for a quick into to medical physio.

Weakness- if your a medical student, ligament descriptions are almost non existant dispite muscular details, maybe not that important for undergrad anatomy. Also, mustle diagrams not on same page as functional details, I heard this was corrected in 11th edition, finally the neuro section is poor, lacks diagrams, however, this book is not advertizing itself as a neuro book so thats not unexpected, netters neuro atlas is great, overall worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars gooses review
Reading this book is like reading a dictionary. It should read more like an encyclopedia. That would make it more interesting. This book is basically one definition after the next.Ive had books that give you a word and then tell you why its important and how to identify it those are much better. When you open the book up and look through it it appears similar to an eeencyclopedia because of all the pictures but that is far from the truth. Now to be fair anatomy by defonition is just listing definitions but the book could have done a better job describing where everything is in relation to other structures in the body. Also more importantly the title says anatomy and physiology and by definition physiology means the function and processes of living organisms which this book did a poor job of doing with the dictionary format it uses. ... Students welcome the book's broad overview as a practical partner oralternative to a more mechanistically oriented approach or an encyclopedic physiology text. Especially clear explanations, ample illustrations, ahelpful glossary of terms, tutorials, and chapter-opening learningobjectives provide superb guidance for self-directed learning and helpfill the gap in many of today's abbreviated physiology blocks. A focus onwell-established cardiovascular principles reflects recent, widelyaccepted cardiovascular research. The supplemental CD-ROM is aninteractive, dynamically linked version of the book, which is organized by normal cardiovascular function and cardiac disease. Students may begin apath of questioning with, for example, a disease condition and then pursue background information through a series of links. Students can also linkto the author's regularly updated Web site for additional clinicalinformation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I purchased this book to help me review for the cardiology section of first-year physiology course in veterinary school. Although the book focuses on the human heart, it has great descriptions of ion-channels, vector-loop diagrams, the cardiac cycle, neurohumoral regulation, and more with review questions for each chapter to help you learn the material. My only complaint is that the images are not in the beautiful coloring seen on the front cover but are primarily grayscale with a few red lines throw in. Regardless, the text and figures included were immensely helpful in improving my understanding of te material. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy and Physiology "paperback" - this is actually the study guide!
Caution: there is not a paperback version of this textbook available!

The Amazon page for the Anatomy and Physiology text shows a link to a paperback version available for about $35 dollars, but it is not a paperback version of the textbook! Instead you'll receive the study guide - this is an error with Amazon's page for this book.

The study guide does appear to be a good one, with practice tests and review points to help prepare for exams. I'll probably keep it now that I have it, but I still had to fork out $100+ for the actual textbook!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent if you like a conversational style
This text reads rather like an expanded lecture.Language is precise where it needs to be: I don't see "arm" used where "upper extremity" is intended.

I believe the May 2 reviewer may be dealing with a much older edition or otherwise confused. The connection of HPV to cervical cancer is clearly indicated in this edition, and was present in the second edition as well.In the second edition herpesviruses were also mentioned as "having been implicated as a cause of cervical cancer", and that phrase has been dropped from the third edition.I think the phrasing was probably reasonable at the time the second edition was in preparation.

I would never go so far as to say any text is error-free.However, when I think I've found mistakes in here it's more likely to turn out that the folks at Terminologica Anatomica have changed something underneath me - like moving the macula densa from the distal convoluted tubule to the ascending limbof the loop of Henle.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was alright.
It's a text book. It gives you the basics for your class and you have to purchase it anyway. I've had better bio books, but I've also had worse, way worse. It's not too short. I think it's alright.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Anatomy/Physiology text book I had to buy ever
The author of this text book repeatedly falls into prose trying to make the subject matter more entertaining. Unfortunately, I found this rather distracting considering it is a text book. I was also shocked to find incorrect information in this 2004 reviewed text book, e.g. it claims that a Herpes Virus is the causative agent of cervical cancer, which is plain out wrong (it is HPV). Lucky me, I already have a degree in the medical field and know this kind of information, but I feel sorry for students who use this as primary source for their education. I was also disappointed that this text book has no contact information listed for improvement suggestions. Every good text book I purchased so far had either e-mail or regular mail contact information where one could address concerns to - this one does not. I sent the publishing company a letter about the faulty content, but have not heard back from them. ... Read more

This book is well written and explains the material with great detail so that anyone can understand it clearly.I am very satisfied with the purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
The best thing is that this book has a CD-rom that gives you simplified with tests every one the the chapters. You can practice your knowledge gained at the end of every chapter using written tests.

I would have liked if the images had color. They're all white and black or drawings (which are really good too).

As a speech pathology student who was required to take an anatomy class with this being the required text - this book was horrible. In each chapter there is sooo much missing information and holes and gaps in the information that it made learning anatomy that much harder. The only good thing about this book is that it comes with a helpful anatomy cd for the cdrom... i preferred the Netter anatomy book instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I have to say, I used the 5th edition of this book and know that the 6th is better as I worked with another student who had the 6th edition.EVERYbody who wants to know, particulary physiology, should have this book for reference. The anatomy is also excellent particular the discussions on vascular and the venous / arterial systems and the nervous system discussions are clear!.I reference this book all the time.

Book Description
Eric Widmaier (Boston University), Hershel Raff (Medical College of Wisconsin), and Kevin Strang (University of Wisconsin) have taken on the challenge of maintaining the strengths and reputation of Vander’s Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function. Moving beyond the listing of mere facts, it stressed the causal chains of events that constitute the mechanisms of body function. The fundamental purpose of this textbook is to present the principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduates regardless of academic background or field of study.

Vander’s Human Physiology, eleventh edition, carries on the tradition of clarity and accuracy, while refining and updating the content to meet the needs of today’s instructors and students. The eleventh edition features a streamlined, clinically oriented focus to the study of human body systems. It has also responded to reviewer requests for more clinical applications.Chapter 19 is new and contains three complete case studies.Physiology Inquiries have also been added to many figures throughout the chapters. These critical-thinking questions are just one more opportunity to add to the student’s learning experience. ... Forget what A reader from ROY, WA USA said.

That person obviously has no idea what they're talking about. They complain about the 'the excessive cost of the book!'

The book is ONLY $14.95 !For 535 pages! How excessive is that?!

This is a great book.Extremely easy to read.It doesn't have everything, but it gives a great overview of all the hormones and what they do, a very detaild explanation of what causes blood to clot (intrinsic and extrinsic pathways) and the best pictures of details of synovial joints anywhere.

Each chapter is about 16 pages long followed by about 9 pages of questions.

A lot of large print with a lot of white space.

    This book,

    together with

Anatomy and Physiology (Lippincott Professional Guides), ISBN: 1582551804 , (That is a good small, detailed, well illustrated book)

    or

Anatomy and Physiology (Cliffs Quick Review), ISBN: 0764563734 (An equally small and detailed book, but no illustrations)

    is all you need.

This study guide will work great for those who aren't very familiar with biology, anatomy and physiology in general. However, if you have already taken several biology classes, this study guide is probably not for you. The set-up of the book is different. It never goes into detail about the terminology in the text book. It usually gives short, brief examples that don't really explain how anything works. It's very basic. This book may be more of a "practice test" than a study guide. Personally, I do not recommend this book.
