4-0 out of 5 stars Great practice but has its problems
I used this book extensively (basically I did all of the questions) to prepare for my class exams and for the shelf exam. I found it extremely useful, especially when I could do the questions with friends. The questions are challenging and integrative (ie: cell physiology questions had cardio stuff in them) and are framed in the, "54 year old male complains of..." type of format, which is great practice.

The only reason it's not a 5-star is that there are lots of mistakes in here. Mistakes ranging from things as simple as wrong answers (ie: answer is "e" but the explanation clearly says "a" is the answer) to utterly incoherent explanations. I would say this happened about once every 15 questions or so. This is also why it's great for group studying because you can go over difficult concepts and also try to catch errors.

Haven't used the 12th edition but my friend had the 10th and the differences from that and the 11th were huge.

4-0 out of 5 stars good prep
I used this book to prep for a physio miniboard exam (NBME subject exam). Very helpful for review and practice. The High Yield chapter was okay for review, but really not as helpful as the High Yield chapters in other Pretest books.

Watch out for mistakes though. Many mistakes in gastro (i think... it was in one of the chapters, anyway). Start early so you have time to look up things that don't quite look right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shelf Prep
This is a great resource for Shelf Exam prep....my physio class didn't do an adequate job of preparing me for the shelf (the first one I took), but Pre-Test helped me get a very good score. ... Read more

Product Description
Eric Widmaier (Boston University), Hershel Raff (Medical College of Wisconsin), and Kevin Strang (University of Wisconsin) have taken on the challenge of maintaining the strengths and reputation of Vander’s Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function. Moving beyond the listing of mere facts, it stresses the causal chains of events that constitute the mechanisms of body function. The fundamental purpose of this textbook is to present the principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduates regardless of academic background or field of study.

Vander’s Human Physiology, twelfth edition, carries on the tradition of clarity and accuracy, while refining and updating the content to meet the needs of today’s instructors and students. The twelfth edition features a streamlined, clinically oriented focus to the study of human body systems. It has also responded to reviewer requests for more clinical applications.Chapter 19 was new for the eleventh edition, with three complete case studies. The twelfth edition will contain an additional new case study.Additional Physiology Inquiries have been added to many figures throughout the chapters. These critical-thinking questions are just one more opportunity to add to the student’s learning experience. ... Great seller. Book was in condition as stated by seller.Fast shipping and delivery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary
This book was required for my human anatomy and physiology course. This book in my opinion is much better than other books that I have use to help me understand medical physiology topics (and a large portion of the biology section for the MCAT).The online quizzes were excellent practice for my exams and I found that the book was much more helpful than the notes that were provided in class.Yes, there are some topics that are not as detail as I would have liked but there is no perfect book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book...
Not an easy subject to begin with anyway...some great illustrations.....some are without explanation so you will be lost...especially the kreb cycle area....and too expensive. Why do texts books cost so darn much! Its crazy how much this book costs brand new!

1-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Anatomy & Physiology
I thought I ordered the entire book.I received only one volume of a 12 volume set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Owners' Manual for the Human Body
My anatomy teacher told us that a very high percentage of students that use this book fail the class.I don't know where he got this information, and after getting to know him, he might have been saying that to scare us into studying more. The material is very in depth, but it is also very clear.Personally, I really liked this textbook and the class - so much in fact that I sold the second-hand copy I used in class and bought a brand new one on Amazon for my personal library. It came with a CD that was very helpful, and also with a year of free access to an online site with excellent quizes and photographs.(At least it did when I bought mine)I have had occassion to refer back to it since I took the class some years ago, and expect to refer to it in the future as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard work!
Oh man! I studied countless hours with this book. It beats around the bush, gives an incredable amount of definitions and makes it boring! The pictures did not help at all, all I did was ready over and over and over and over again. There is a lot of understanding in anatomy and this book did not help at all. I would suggest taking anatomy at a community college where this book is not used

4-0 out of 5 stars worth the money
well I read other reviews regarding this book, many were not very helpful

Strenths- This book does a great job with muscular artistry, some of the details are comparable to netters atlas in visual details, not identification of mustles. The histo and physio are pretty decent, I also use histolgy by gartner and hyatt and BRS physio along with Gyuton for reference, althought not as detailed as those books, it does a great job for a quick into to medical physio.

Weakness- if your a medical student, ligament descriptions are almost non existant dispite muscular details, maybe not that important for undergrad anatomy. Also, mustle diagrams not on same page as functional details, I heard this was corrected in 11th edition, finally the neuro section is poor, lacks diagrams, however, this book is not advertizing itself as a neuro book so thats not unexpected, netters neuro atlas is great, overall worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars gooses review
Reading this book is like reading a dictionary. It should read more like an encyclopedia. That would make it more interesting. This book is basically one definition after the next.Ive had books that give you a word and then tell you why its important and how to identify it those are much better. When you open the book up and look through it it appears similar to an eeencyclopedia because of all the pictures but that is far from the truth. Now to be fair anatomy by defonition is just listing definitions but the book could have done a better job describing where everything is in relation to other structures in the body. Also more importantly the title says anatomy and physiology and by definition physiology means the function and processes of living organisms which this book did a poor job of doing with the dictionary format it uses. ... Product Description
This text is designed to help students develop a solid, basic understanding of anatomy and physiology without an encyclopedic presentation of detail. Great care has been taken to select important concepts and to perfectly describe the anatomy of cells, organs, and organ systems. The plan that has been followed for nine editions of this popular text is to combine clear and accurate descriptions of anatomy with precise explanations of how structures function and examples of how they work together to maintain life. To emphasize the concepts of anatomy and physiology, the authors provide explanations of how the systems respond to aging, changes in physical activity, and disease, with a special focus on homeostasis and the regulatory mechanisms that maintain it. This text has more clinical content than any other A & P book on the market. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jump Start
This book gave me a boost in my Anatomy and Physiology class. It pushed me from the middle of the class to the top. It's an older version and it's not the exact book my professor uses but once you familiarize yourself with it then it's easy to find things in the book. I love the terms at the beginning. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst service ever!!!!
The seller advertised a book, but sent me a study guide. I ordered on March 9, and barely got the product on March 31. I asked for a refund, and the seller denied. Worst service ever!!! if you want to lose your money and get something else you don't want, order from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely understandable!
We're supposed to have another Author for our required A&P book, but after reading both in the library I bought this one. Marieb explains things in a way that you will understand the material. My teacher agreed & said it was fine for me to use this book instead & if it had been his choice, we would have used Marieb anyway!

1-0 out of 5 stars missing alot of detail....
Wow, I am really suprised this book garnered as much positive feedback as it has. I am a nursing major, and I was apalled at the lack of detail in this book. I ended up using the A&P text from my 201 class for the majority of this class. Maybe it was the questions my instructor asked, but I constanatly had to go to other sources in order to find the information I needed. If anyone finds themself in this situation, Ken Saladin's text by the same name is the best!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great for general review, not for boards though
I really like this book. It's not necessarily the best book to use for board review, but it's a wonderful reference tool when you want a relatively fast, yet more in-depth explanation than you'd find in BSR physiology. For example, I'm reading pharmacology mechanism of action--who helps me out?mini-guyton!That said, most of my friends don't love it like I do because it's a little dense.Sometimes I need the specificity to truly understand systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Guyton

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory/Supplement Text
This is a decent introductory book for an undergraduate college physiology class (it is for mine) and a great supplement to clarify materials from lecture. The text was published a while back, but the basic physiological fundamentals and principles still hold true so don't let the 2001 publication date fool you.

One qualm that I have is that the chapters are NOT indicated at the top of each page. This is a bit annoying as you have to actually go to the table of contents each time you need to find a specific chapter - as a student, it would have helped if the chapter number were included with chapter titles.

I would have also liked a separate index of animals in the back of the book, and not just terminology/definitions and a regular index. Many of the other texts I have used for my biology classes have included an index but also an additional index of animals.

Overall, a solid, basic book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholastic perfection
I've been in an accredited university for fifteen years studying the intricacies of physiology. I have never come across a book that was executed to such perfection. The photos are astonishing in their clarity and intimate setting. The narration is concise and very clear, almost to the point where you want to phone the author and congratulate him on his accomplishment. If you are thinking of pursuing any kind of biological/medical field than I highly recommend this fine piece of art. It will soon be Shakespearean in its influence. Don't trust the simple words of my fellow plebian reviewers; this book is the second coming of the Bible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beutiful subject, beautifully written.
This is perhaps the most well written text I've ever used. The book has a very conversational flow, yet is very thorough (and I'm a "details" kind of person). Objectives and end-of-chapter review questions keep you focused. Ample figures (including many flowcharts) simplify concepts and interconnect various areas of renal physiology to help you see the kidney as a multifunctional unit. Even if you have a thorough physiology textbook like Guyton, get this book because the kidney is extremely important and affects and is affected by all the goings-on in the body, and the subject really does deserve to be in a standalone book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent renal physio book
Baby-steps you through the complex physiology, starting from the VERY BASICS for each topic at hand, just to keep the people who snoozed thru Gen Chem up to snuff (i.e. "What is a buffer and how do buffers work?" for the acid/base chapter), then moves on to more difficult stuff, until you're surprised that you can actually understand the really advanced physiology.
Doesn't only explain what happens, but also WHY the water or particular solute "decides" to be filtered/excreted/reabsorbed/secreted at each part of the tubular lumen/ECF/peritubular capillary. Really methodical and well-organized. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, easy to follow
This book is easy (as easy as a human physiology textbook can be) to read and comprehend. It contains many full-color, 3-D diagrams which really helped me comprehend and memorize the necessary structures and functions.More specifically, the chapter and diagrams on kidney physiology made it worth the money alone.

Great condition, arrived promptly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.
This textbook is easier to understand than many textbooks because it defines things as they are introduced several times. It doesn't automatically assume you know things already. It is almost identical to the 11th edition and is interchangable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, easy to read and well organized
I am almost done using this textbook for my intro physiology class. I have been very pleased with the overall readability and simplicity of the book. Fox explains things clearly and with just the right amount of detail (for an intro course). There are a few areas here and there that were a bit confusing, and my professor pointed out a few errors, but no text book is perfect.

Also, if this book is required for a class, you can probably get a way with using one of the older editions as the changes from edition to edition are minimal (renumbering or reordering graphs, or sometimes just changing the colors of the graphs!). In my class students used everything from the 11th edition to the 9th edition. The international edition is identical to the US one, not to mention cheaper and lighter (it's softcover).

Product Description
Animal Physiology presents all the branches of modern animal physiology with a strong emphasis on integration of physiological knowledge, ecology, and evolutionary biology. Integration extends from molecules to organ systems and from one physiological discipline to another. The book takes an entirely fresh approach to each topic. Its full-color illustrations include many novel, visually effective features to help students learn. Each of the 24 main chapters starts with a brief animal example to engage student interest and demonstrate the value of the material that will be learned. The book includes five additional, briefer At Work chapters that apply students newfound physiological knowledge to curiosity-provoking and important topics, including diving by marine mammals, the mechanisms of navigation, and muscle plasticity in use and disuse. The book is committed to a comparative approach throughout. Whereas mammalian physiology is consistently treated in depth, emphasis is also given to the other vertebrate groups, arthropods, molluscs, and as appropriate additional invertebrates. Concepts and integrative themes are emphasized while giving students the specifics they need. The whole animal is the principal focus of this book. The pages are filled with information on everything from knockout mice and enzyme chemistry to traditional organ physiology, phylogenetic analysis, and applications to human affairs. Always, the central organizing principle for the array of topics presented is to understand whole animals in the environments where they live. Concepts from chemistry, physics, and mathematics are explained so the book will be accessible to science students at the sophomore or higher level. Complex principles are developed clearly and carefully, to help students understand important concepts in sufficient depth without being overwhelmed. Pedagogical aids include embedded summaries throughout chapters, study questions, partially annotated reference lists, an extensive glossary, appendices, and an upgraded index. For all three authors, teaching physiology to undergraduate students has been a lifelong priority. The opening four chapters provide background material on physiological basics, cell molecular concepts, genomics, transport of solutes and water, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The remaining chapters are organized into five sections: * Food, Energy, and Temperature * Integrating Systems * Movement and Muscle * Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and Internal Transport * Water, Salts, and Excretion ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Never got the book
Book never came - therefore there really isn't a review to be done of the product (or lack there of)

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal Physiology Textbook
This used book from 2004 weighs almost five pounds and has nearly 800 pages of knowledge about multiple science disciplines concerning life. The authors thought and planned big when they developed this project.I paid under $7 including shipping and this will provide hours of reading and a good foundation in physiology, which I have not studied seriously since college. The book is large to handle, but at least the font size is adequate for an older reader. The color pictures and diagrams are helpful. The used condition of the book was fine and the highlighting of a former student was no big deal to me. I will be reading for some time yet...

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it - the language is easy to follow
I understand that this book will be considered simplistic for someone that want to be a surgeon or need to have a deeper knowledge in physiology. However, my interest is to understand the basis of physiology specially how the system works as a whole, and it is why I loved this book. This book is not traditional as other medical physiology book, because it connects the micro with the macro and the sequence of the text is innovative and original. I think this book is a very nice introduction to the world of physiology, specially for rehabilitation and kinesiology professionals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon's not telling you there's a newer edition!
For whatever reason, Amazon is not telling you that there's a newer printing of this same book under ISBN 9780321559807!Same edition, same cover, although they are cleverly NOT showing you a picture of it on their website. Thanks to that, used copies are going for a song, compared to this printing. Thanks, Amazon (sarcasm.)Oh wait! When I clicked on THIS PAGE, you told me I bought THIS BOOK on August 5, 2009.And yet, I can't sell it back here.NICE (more sarcasm.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Oversly Simplistic and Inconsistant - Pretty Pictures Though!
This book covers all of physiology so it has the breadth, but not the depth. The language used is very simplistic, eg. every time the book mentions edema it redefines it as "swelling". Some of the chapters are very good and the pictures are useful in the understanding of the material. Others, such as the immunology chapter, are all over the place and do not explain things in a logical way. Overall, this books tries to hard to be a fun read which is distracting from the purpose of a textbook - to present the material in an informative, and logical way. There are also no sources of original research or even review articles which can be useful to gain a deeper understanding of a specific topic. Definitely not an advanced physiology textbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars text book
This was ok.A bit more highlighting than I wanted and I didn't expect it to be a teachers edition.I should have just bought the international version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great service, only one complaint
The book that I received was in pristine condition other than a few dents/ bent corners of the hardcover. From the way that it was received the packing was also damanged in the same areas as the book. As it can be expected for items shipped to end up slighly damanged, I feel that the book was still in exceptional condition. Very fast delivery!!! ... Read more

Product Description
#1 selling text with great explanations, and just enough anatomy!

Clear explanations and a solid learning framework have been market tested and refined. Fox helps students master the fundamentals by providing appropriate anatomical detail.

Human Physiology, Eleventh Edition, is intended for the one-semester Human Physiology course often taken by allied health and biology students. The beginning chapters introduce basic chemical and biological concepts to provide students with the framework they need to comprehend physiological principles. The chapters that follow promote conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization of facts.

Health applications are included throughout the book to heighten interest, deepen understanding of physiological concepts, and help students relate the material to their individual career goals. Every effort has been made to help students integrate related concepts and understand the relationships between anatomical structures and their functions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Reading this book and drinking battery acid, I choose the latter
I have to agree with some of the previous posters, THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY HORRID.You would think that after 11 editions of the same book, Fox would actually be close to explaining topics with perfection.WRONG!!!Concepts are not well explained and many times Fox just walks in circles leaving the reader more confused by the material than they should be.I can't stand the writing style which is constantly broken with words like "thus" "wherein" and "therefore" when it would have sufficed to just continue with a fluid train of thought.Sometimes I thought he was just trying to come off as being clever or more intelligent than he actually is by doing so.Forget about the online content too, it its all garbage and very limited.

All in all I would ask your professor if they could suggest a different book to study from.Given the choice of reading this and drinking battery acid, I choose the latter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Physiology Book
Product arrived in perfect condition and within 2 days. I couldn't believe how fast it was at my house! Thanks again

1-0 out of 5 stars deplorable
Absolutely the driest textbook I've ever owned. Not even my teacher liked the book, but she used the publisher's slides and required that we buy the book anyways. Is there nothing else better out there? His descriptions required my teacher to constantly provide "In other words..." to clarify what the heck he was talking about. It's written in a way that requires a person to reread the text a couple of times to "get it." I ended up getting an A in the class, but I relied heavily on both my anatomy and physiology teachers to explain difficult concepts that Fox couldn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete Text
I have used this text as an undergrad and I have taught from this text as a professor. It is the most complete and logically organized text I have found as a professor. In general, this is a tough subject but the illustrations and the McGraw Hill website make this text the most student friendly. I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The key to understanding this book is
I am doing pre-reqs for nursing school.Of course physiology is a required course.I have to say at first I absolutely hated this book.I am new to sciences and I found this book NOT to be intended for the science neophyte.HOWEVER, this book was assigned reading so I was forced to contend with it.I just finished physio and I got an A for the course.I found that the key to understanding this expensive book was through my purchase of a very inexpensive book which gave me the best OVERVIEW of the fundamentals of physiology. That book is the 2009 Edition of "Campbell's Physiology Notes" by John Campbell.YOU must get the 2009 edition. It is listed here at amazon but Amazon says it is currently unavailable when in fact this is a brand new book. There is a way to get this book. Just google the words "campbellteaching and UK" and order the book directly from campbell's site.

I wrote a review of the Campbell book here at amazon at this link:www.amazon.com/Campbells-Physiology-Notes-John-Campbell/dp/0955379725/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242515613&sr=8-3

If you want to see what I mean about how John Campbell's 2009 inexpensive book gets you through this Fox textbook: just try to read the section on Osmosis in this book and then go to youtube and watch John Campbell's video explanation of osmosis. He has several videos at youtube but watch the Osmosis one.THIS GUY IS AMAZING!If you need to understand some important physio concepts this is the guy to watch and his book is a great inexpensive book to own.AFter watching that youtube video of John Campbell's I bought his entire DVD collection.

I suggest you watch the video: just google the words "campbellteaching and youtube" and watch his video on Osmosis.THEN while you are at it google the words "campbellteaching and UK" and order his new 2009 "Campbell's Physiology Notes" (physiology book) and then you will not only better enjoy and appreciate this Fox Physiology book but FOR SURE you will better understand at least if you are new to all of this.THAT IS HOW I got my A in my physiology course. So I don't hate this Fox book any more, and I enjoyed many parts of it after reading and watching Campbell. This Fox book is just intended for a reader who is clear on the fundamentals so I got that from the Campbell book and then better appreciated this book.
