Extracted from the Drug Abuse Handbook, 2nd edition, to give you just the information you need at an affordable price.

Postmortem Toxicology of Abused Drugs considers the role of toxicology in the investigation of homicide, suicide, accident, natural death, and overdose. It gives practical insights and case reviews on conducting toxicology tests and completing toxicology reports. It explains chain of custody; specimen collection and security; sampling of blood, urine, bile, and vitreous humor; and the selection of post-mortem specimens. Analyzing various testing procedures, the book covers simple chemical tests, microdiffusion tests, chromatography, spectroscopy, and more. It also discusses methods and strategies for analysis; and covers quality assurance protocols and controls. To help avoid common pitfalls, the text demonstrates the proper interpretation of postmortem drug levels based on knowledge of pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and pharmacogenetics; post-mortem redistribution and diffusion; and other considerations such as synergistic toxicity, and drug instability. Heavily referenced and containing several tables, figures, and useful appendices, this book is a handy reference for forensic scientists and medical examiners involved with death investigation. ... Product Description
The analytical toxicologist may be required to detect, identify, and in many cases measure a wide variety of compounds in samples from almost any part of the body or in related materials such as residues in syringes or in soil. This book gives principles and practical information on the analysis of drugs and poisons in biological specimens, particularly clinical and forensic specimens.

After providing some background information the book covers aspects of sample collection, transport, storage and disposal, and sample preparation. Analytical techniques - colour tests and spectrophotometry, chromatography and electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and immunoassay – are covered in depth, and a chapter is devoted to the analysis of trace elements and toxic metals. General aspects of method implementation/validation and laboratory operation are detailed, as is the role of the toxicology laboratory in validating and monitoring the performance of point of care testing (POCT) devices. The book concludes with reviews of xenobiotic absorption, distribution and metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and general aspects of the interpretation of analytical toxicology results.

  • A clearly written, practical, integrated approach to the basics of analytical toxicology.
  • Focuses on analytical, statistical and pharmacokinetic principles rather than detailed applications.
  • Assumes only a basic knowledge of analytical chemistry.
  • An accompanying website provides additional material and links to related sites.

Written by an experienced team of authors,Fundamentals of Analytical Toxicology is an invaluable resource for those starting out in a career in analytical toxicology across a wide range of disciplines including clinical and forensic science, food safety, and pharmaceutical development.

Praise from the reviews:

“This is an ambitious effort to describe in detail the many and varied aspects of the science of toxicological analysis. The 17 chapters cover every foreseeable aspect, from specimen collection through analytical techniques and quality control to pharmacological principles and interpretation of results. The authors bring together a great deal of experience in the field and have succeeded admirably in achieving their goal: "to give principles and practical information on the analysis of drugs, poisons and other relevant analytes in biological specimens...". The book is very readable and quite up-to-date, and contains many illustrative figures, charts and tables. Both the student and the practicing professional would do well to study this material carefully, as there is something here for every conceivable level of interest.”   Review from Randall Baselt

Product Description
Everyday, we come into contact with many relatively harmless substances that could, at certain concentrations, be toxic. This applies not only to obvious candidates such as asbestos, lead, and gasdline, but also to compounds such as caffeine and headache tablets. While the field of toxicology has numerous texts devoted to aspects of biology, chemistry, and mechanism of action, the need remains for a book that places toxicology within the framework of our daily lives.A Small Dose of Toxicology presents the principles of toxicology by exploring the effects of common chemical agents such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. It reviews the fundamentals of dose-response and factors of individual sensitivity in regard to these drugs, and then applies this knowledge to environmental contaminates such as lead, arsenic, pesticides, mercury, and radiation. Chapters discuss neurotoxicology, risk assessment, carcinogenicity, and with a variety of specific toxic agents, with each chapter designed as a self-contained module to allow for flexibility in the selection of personal or academic material. Exploring current toxicology concerns within a human context, this text discusses how toxicology affects our everyday lives while providing insight into the broader issues of public health and disease prevention. Environmental and public health professionals, as well as novices and students requiring a basic foundation in toxicology will find this resource incredibly useful. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

After fifteen years and three editions, Introduction to Environmental Toxicology: Molecular Substructures to Ecological Landscapes has become a standard that defines the field of environmental toxicology, and the fourth edition is no exception. The authors take an integrated approach to environmental toxicology that emphasizes scale and context as important factors in understanding effects and management options.

New in the Fourth Edition:

  • New author, Dr. Ruth M. Sofield
  • 8-page color insert
  • A chapter on fate and transport
  • Emphasis on the use of all types of models in understanding how nature works
  • Revised sections on synergy and atrazine toxicity
  • Updated coverage of the analysis of impacts to populations, communities and ecosystems
  • Enlarged risk assessment chapter with an in-depth description of a regional scale risk assessment

This edition benefits from the insight of a new author, Dr. Ruth M. Sofield, who prepared the new chapter on the fate and transport of contaminants. The relationship between structure and toxicological properties has been a major theme of this book since its inception and this new chapter expands this fundamental concept to include fate and transport. In the early chapters the use of models in science is discussed and this theme carries throughout the rest of the book.

So much has changed in the fifteen years since the publication of the first edition. The mid-1990s seem so long ago, when our understanding of environmental toxicology was very basic. Ecological risk assessment was in its very early stages and the consideration of the effects of toxicants on landscapes was only beginning. Computation was still hard, genes stayed put, and it was only becoming recognized that xenobiotics could have hormonal effects — developments that are taken for granted in this edition. Written by authors who teach this subject, a feature that is reflected in their straightforward style, the book provides a foundation for understanding environmental toxicology and its application.

The author is Donald Barceloux, MD, the co-author of Medical Toxicology, which is still a staple reference in the discipline of clinical toxicology.Dr. Barceloux combines his expertise in medical toxicology and emergency medicine and his skills as an author to address the significant and challenging natural toxins that are associated with morbidity and mortality. The book is divided into five sections: foodborne and microbial toxins, fungal toxins (mushrooms), medicinal herbs and essential oils, toxic plants and venomous animals (even marine poisons). Each monograph follows a template that is consistent throughout the book and makes it easy to navigate from section to section.Strengths of the book include placing each toxin in perspective with regard to potential morbidity and mortality, focused but comprehensive monographs, and extensive referencing. After using the book for a few weeks, I noted only one minor weakness--a number of terms are missing from the index. For example, a minimal number of terms such as poinsettia, philodendron, Araceae are missing. Thus, it took slightly longer to locate the information about those plants. While all of the information included in the book can be found in a multitude of hardcopy references and online resources, this is the only book that combines everything into a single, authoritative, contemporary and easy to read reference. ... Product Description
Research into the biochemical basis of toxicology has expanded rapidly over recent years, amidst concerns over the adverse effects of drugs, environmental pollution and occupational hazards.
Following on from the acclaimed first two editions of Principles of Biochemical Toxicology, John Timbrell has expanded the text to include:

  • summary sections
  • questions and model answers
  • thoroughly revised artwork
These features, plus the new easy-to-read format will make biochemical toxicology more accessible to undergraduates and postgraduates coming across the subject for the first time, particularly when undertaking self-directed study.
This comprehensive textbook provides a thorough explanation of dose-response relationships; disposition and metabolism; toxic responses to foreign compounds, and detailed examples to illustrate mechanisms of toxicity. There is also an expanded and updated bibliography, directing the reader to further reading if required. Students and lecturers will find the clear and concise approach, which established this book as the leading textbook in its field, an essential aid to learning and teaching.
